• Flash under dhtml menu

  I'm struggling with this probelm for few hours and it's drives me crazy. I want my drop down menu put over flash area and it works but only in FF. Unfotunelly IE and Opera shows my menu under flash. The DHTML menu system is the simplest as possible and it was wrote from scratch by me. I've been trying everything, and still it doesn't work like it should. I tried to put the flash element by jquery.flashEmbed script and by standard code with param transparent, but it never works. • Windows Azure: Announcing release of Windows Azure SDK 2.2 (with lots of goodies)

  Earlier today I blogged about a big update we made today to Windows Azure, and some of the great new features it provides. Today I’m also excited to also announce the release of the Windows Azure SDK 2.2. Today’s SDK release adds even more great features including: Visual Studio 2013 Support Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio Remote Debugging Cloud Services with Visual Studio Firewall Management support within Visual Studio for SQL Databases Visual Studio 2013 RTM VM Images for MSDN Subscribers Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET Updated Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets and ScriptCenter The below post has more details on what’s available in today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release.  Also head over to Channel 9 to see the new episode of the Visual Studio Toolbox show that will be available shortly, and which highlights these features in a video demonstration. Visual Studio 2013 Support Version 2.2 of the Window Azure SDK is the first official version of the SDK to support the final RTM release of Visual Studio 2013. If you installed the 2.1 SDK with the Preview of Visual Studio 2013 we recommend that you upgrade your projects to SDK 2.2.  SDK 2.2 also works side by side with the SDK 2.0 and SDK 2.1 releases on Visual Studio 2012: Integrated Windows Azure Sign In within Visual Studio Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio is one of the big improvements added with this Windows Azure SDK release.  Integrated sign-in support enables developers to develop/test/manage Windows Azure resources within Visual Studio without having to download or use management certificates.  You can now just right-click on the “Windows Azure” icon within the Server Explorer inside Visual Studio and choose the “Connect to Windows Azure” context menu option to connect to Windows Azure: Doing this will prompt you to enter the email address of the account you wish to sign-in with: You can use either a Microsoft Account (e.g. Windows Live ID) or an Organizational account (e.g. Active Directory) as the email.  The dialog will update with an appropriate login prompt depending on which type of email address you enter: Once you sign-in you’ll see the Windows Azure resources that you have permissions to manage show up automatically within the Visual Studio Server Explorer (and you can start using them): With this new integrated sign in experience you are now able to publish web apps, deploy VMs and cloud services, use Windows Azure diagnostics, and fully interact with your Windows Azure services within Visual Studio without the need for a management certificate.  All of the authentication is handled using the Windows Azure Active Directory associated with your Windows Azure account (details on this can be found in my earlier blog post). Integrating authentication this way end-to-end across the Service Management APIs + Dev Tools + Management Portal + PowerShell automation scripts enables a much more secure and flexible security model within Windows Azure, and makes it much more convenient to securely manage multiple developers + administrators working on a project.  It also allows organizations and enterprises to use the same authentication model that they use for their developers on-premises in the cloud.  It also ensures that employees who leave an organization immediately lose access to their company’s cloud based resources once their Active Directory account is suspended. Filtering/Subscription Management Once you login within Visual Studio, you can filter which Windows Azure subscriptions/regions are visible within the Server Explorer by right-clicking the “Filter Services” context menu within the Server Explorer.  You can also use the “Manage Subscriptions” context menu to mange your Windows Azure Subscriptions: Bringing up the “Manage Subscriptions” dialog allows you to see which accounts you are currently using, as well as which subscriptions are within them: The “Certificates” tab allows you to continue to import and use management certificates to manage Windows Azure resources as well.  We have not removed any functionality with today’s update – all of the existing scenarios that previously supported management certificates within Visual Studio continue to work just fine.  The new integrated sign-in support provided with today’s release is purely additive. Note: the SQL Database node and the Mobile Service node in Server Explorer do not support integrated sign-in at this time. Therefore, you will only see databases and mobile services under those nodes if you have a management certificate to authorize access to them.  We will enable them with integrated sign-in in a future update. Remote Debugging Cloud Resources within Visual Studio Today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release adds support for remote debugging many types of Windows Azure resources. With live, remote debugging support from within Visual Studio, you are now able to have more visibility than ever before into how your code is operating live in Windows Azure.  Let’s walkthrough how to enable remote debugging for a Cloud Service: Remote Debugging of Cloud Services To enable remote debugging for your cloud service, select Debug as the Build Configuration on the Common Settings tab of your Cloud Service’s publish dialog wizard: Then click the Advanced Settings tab and check the Enable Remote Debugging for all roles checkbox: Once your cloud service is published and running live in the cloud, simply set a breakpoint in your local source code: Then use Visual Studio’s Server Explorer to select the Cloud Service instance deployed in the cloud, and then use the Attach Debugger context menu on the role or to a specific VM instance of it: Once the debugger attaches to the Cloud Service, and a breakpoint is hit, you’ll be able to use the rich debugging capabilities of Visual Studio to debug the cloud instance remotely, in real-time, and see exactly how your app is running in the cloud. Today’s remote debugging support is super powerful, and makes it much easier to develop and test applications for the cloud.  Support for remote debugging Cloud Services is available as of today, and we’ll also enable support for remote debugging Web Sites shortly. Firewall Management Support with SQL Databases By default we enable a security firewall around SQL Databases hosted within Windows Azure.  This ensures that only your application (or IP addresses you approve) can connect to them and helps make your infrastructure secure by default.  This is great for protection at runtime, but can sometimes be a pain at development time (since by default you can’t connect/manage the database remotely within Visual Studio if the security firewall blocks your instance of VS from connecting to it). One of the cool features we’ve added with today’s release is support that makes it easy to enable and configure the security firewall directly within Visual Studio.  Now with the SDK 2.2 release, when you try and connect to a SQL Database using the Visual Studio Server Explorer, and a firewall rule prevents access to the database from your machine, you will be prompted to add a firewall rule to enable access from your local IP address: You can simply click Add Firewall Rule and a new rule will be automatically added for you. In some cases, the logic to detect your local IP may not be sufficient (for example: you are behind a corporate firewall that uses a range of IP addresses) and you may need to set up a firewall rule for a range of IP addresses in order to gain access. The new Add Firewall Rule dialog also makes this easy to do.  Once connected you’ll be able to manage your SQL Database directly within the Visual Studio Server Explorer: This makes it much easier to work with databases in the cloud. Visual Studio 2013 RTM Virtual Machine Images Available for MSDN Subscribers Last week we released the General Availability Release of Visual Studio 2013 to the web.  This is an awesome release with a ton of new features. With today’s Windows Azure update we now have a set of pre-configured VM images of VS 2013 available within the Windows Azure Management Portal for use by MSDN customers.  This enables you to create a VM in the cloud with VS 2013 pre-installed on it in with only a few clicks: Windows Azure now provides the fastest and easiest way to get started doing development with Visual Studio 2013. Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET (Preview) Having the ability to automate the creation, deployment, and tear down of resources is a key requirement for applications running in the cloud.  It also helps immensely when running dev/test scenarios and coded UI tests against pre-production environments. Today we are releasing a preview of a new set of Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET.  These new libraries make it easy to automate tasks using any .NET language (e.g. C#, VB, F#, etc).  Previously this automation capability was only available through the Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets or to developers who were willing to write their own wrappers for the Windows Azure Service Management REST API. Because they are still in preview form, you’ll need to add the –IncludePrerelease switch when you go to retrieve the packages. The Package Manager Console screen shot below demonstrates how to get the entire set of libraries to manage your Windows Azure assets: You can also install them within your .NET projects by right clicking on the VS Solution Explorer and using the Manage NuGet Packages context menu command.  Make sure to select the “Include Prerelease” drop-down for them to show up, and then you can install the specific management libraries you need for your particular scenarios: Open Source License The new Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET make it super easy to automate management operations within Windows Azure – whether they are for Virtual Machines, Cloud Services, Storage Accounts, Web Sites, and more.  Like the rest of the Windows Azure SDK, we are releasing the source code under an open source (Apache 2) license and it is hosted at https://github.com/WindowsAzure/azure-sdk-for-net/tree/master/libraries if you wish to contribute. PowerShell Enhancements and our New Script Center Today, we are also shipping Windows Azure PowerShell 0.7.0 (which is a separate download). You can find the full change log here. • Sound Effects/Manipulation?

  Hello, I am creating an android app that basically records an applies an "Effect" on the audio track then plays it back. I got my app to record an play back but I am stuck an not sure where do go from here. I have been Googling for days now trying to find a open source audio library or some way to change the audio after I record it. I currently have it setup to play back using SoundPool an I't lets me speed up an slow down the audio. I would like to do things like change pitch an add echo etc. I will appreciate any responses because I am totally stumped right now. Thanks Adam

• XAML Serialization object not using asp.net shadow copy

  Hi, I'm having a problem where i use the XAML serializer / deserializer for a configuration type file that i have. The problem that i'm getting, is that the XAML serializer is returning objects from the assembly in the /Bin directory, while the rest of the web application is using assembly's stored in the ..../Temporary Files/.. directory. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Is this a bug in the XAML serializer / assembly loading routines? Every time i compile i need to stop and start the asp.net application so the shadow copy and the bin are exactly the same file. Even when not making a change to the dll and recompiling still causes the problem. Any thoughts on how to get around this problem? Currently i've tried turning shadow copy off, but then i have the same problem of needing to shut down / start up the web app every time i compile. Help!

• Iphone UIScrollView and multiple visible images

  Hi! Im trying to implement a UIScrollView including multiple images, using paginate. The problem is that I want more then one page to be visible in the UIScrollView, but only one page should be selected. I found several solutions in which you handle touch down/up (touchesBegan and touchesEnded) myself and scrollRectToVisible, but I want to avoid this if possible. A sample solution for that can be found at: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=634462 I dont get why its so easy if you only need to display one page at a time in the UIScrollView , but seems really hard if you want to show more pages. Could you solve it with zooming? /Br Johannes

• Value of text box disapears - binding viewmodel to a tab (content control)

  Based on the MVVM example by Josh Smith, I have implemented the multi tab option which binds to a different tab to a different view model using a simple datatemplate that binds a viewmodel to a view. <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type fixtureVM:SearchViewModel}"> <SearchVw:SearchView/> </DataTemplate> The issue that I'm having, is when I switch tabs and then switch back again, the value in the textbox disappears. When I bind the Text in the textbox to a value in the ViewModel it does not disappear. This is fine, and I can overcome this but I am having another issue for example with the position of the scroll bar in a grid disappearing once the tab has lost focus. Why is the value disappearing? I'm assuming it is a WPF sub system task that cleans up resources!? how can I avoid this? I also feel it might be slowing down my app.

• Best reverse proxy for IIS 6?

  I want to set up a reverse proxy from one of our intranet IIS sites to point to another tomcat server. Eg, i want the user to browse to 'http://our-iis-server/friendly-url' and for it to reverse proxy to 'http://our-tomcat-server/ugly-url'. What would be the best solution for this? I've narrowed it down to three options: http://www.managedfusion.com/products/url-rewriter/documentation.aspx http://www.isapirewrite.com/ http://www.codeplex.com/IIRF Also, can these tools rewrite the links in the html? Eg, if the tomcat server's html has something like 'a href = http://our-tomcat-server/ugly-url/product/widget' i would need it to change to 'a href = http://our-iis-server/friendly-url/product/widget' Thanks in advance. • Ever any performance different between Java >> and >>> right shift operators?

  Is there ever reason to think the (signed) and (unsigned) right bit-shift operators in Java would perform differently? I can't detect any difference on my machine. This is purely an academic question; it's never going to be the bottleneck I'm sure. I know: it's best to write what you mean foremost; use for division by 2, for example. I assume it comes down to which architectures have which operations implemented as an instruction.

• ASP.Net WebForms requiredfieldvalidator not working in FireFox?

  I have a WebForms app that uses a field validator on a dropdownlist. It works in IE but not FireFox. This is pretty straightforward stuff I'm doing. Javascript is enabled on the FireFox browser-- this problem happens on all FF browsers I've tested, on multiple everyday machines, so I don't believe it's due to a locked down install.

• Python imaging alternatives

  I have python code that needs to do just a couple simple things to photographs: crop, resize, and overlay a watermark. I've used PIL, and the resample/resize results are TERRIBLE. I've used imagemagick, and the interface and commands were designed by packaging a cat in a box, and then repeatedly throwing it down a set of stairs at a keyboard. I'm looking for something which is not PIL or Imagemagick that I can use with python to do simple, high-quality image transformations. For that matter, it doesn't even have to have python bindings if the command line interface is good. Oh, and it needs to be relatively platform agnostic, our production servers are linux, but some of our devs develop on windows. It can't require the installation of a bunch of silly gui code to use as a library, either.

  Ever looked at the Computer Language Benchmarks Game (formerly known as the Great Language Shootout)? Perl has some pretty healthy competition there at the moment. It also occurs to me that there's probably some places that Perl's scores could be improved. The biggest one is in the chameneos-redux script right now—the Perl version runs the worst out of any language: 1,626 times slower than the C baseline solution! There are some restrictions on how the programs can be made and optimized, and there is Perl's interpreted runtime penalty, but 1,626 times? There's got to be something that can get the runtime of this program way down. Taking a look at the source code and the challenge, how can the speed be improved?

• Tracking fitness in a genetic algorithm

  I'm still hacking on my old ruby for the undead post (I know, I know, stop trying to bring the post back from the dead Chuck). But the code has gotten a little out of hand and now I'm working on a genetic algorithm to create the ultimate battle of living and dead with the fitness being how long the battle lasts. So, I've got the basics of it down; how to adjust attributes of the game and how to acquire the fitness of a solution, what I can't figure out is how to store the fitness so that I know when I've tried a combination before. I've not been able to find much genetic code to look at let alone code that I can read well enough to tell what's going on. Does anyone have an idea how this is normally done or just simply an algorithm that could help point me in the right direction?

• Refreshing UIScrollView / Animation, timing (Objective-C)

  I have a UIScrollView that is displaying a list of data. Right now, when the user adds one more item to the list, I can extend the content size of the UIScrollView and scroll down smoothly using setContentOffset and YES to animated. When the user removes an item from the list, I want to resize the content size of the UIScrollView, and scroll back up one step also in an animated fashion. How can I get the ordering right? Right now, if I resize the content size before scrolling back up, the scroll isn't animated. I tried scrolling back up before resizing the content size, but that still didn't give a smooth transition. Is there a way to finish the scrolling animation BEFORE resizing the content size? Thanks

• fourier transform to transpose key of a wav file

  I want to write an app to transpose the key a wav file plays in (for fun, I know there are apps that already do this)... my main understanding of how this might be accomplished is to 1) chop the audio file into very small blocks (say 1/10 a second) 2) run an FFT on each block 3) phase shift the frequency space up or down depending on what key I want 4) use an inverse FFT to return each block to the time domain 5) glue all the blocks together But now I'm wondering if the transformed blocks would no longer be continuous when I try to glue them back together. Are there ideas how I should do this to guarantee continuity, or am I just worrying about nothing?

  Hello, I have a probleme with jquery.ui.autocomplete 1.8 rc2 in IE7 or IE8 with the following CSS (inside jquery.ui.autocomplete.css) : .ui-menu { list-style:none; padding: 2px; margin: 0;display:block; height:200px; overflow:scroll; } I'm using the demo from the project called : demos\autocomplete\remote-jsonp.html It's working perfect with firefox but with IE7 or 8, each time I click on the scroll bar to see the end of the list, it selects an element instead of scrolling down. Do you please have a solution to have a fixed height with jquery.ui.autocomplete and a scroll bar working with IE ? Thank you very much

• Show underlying applications mouse cursor when hovering over visible section of my application.

  I am writing a WPF application that allows the user to draw over the entire screen when the right mouse button is held down. I use a full screen transparent overlay form to achieve this, however, as I draw lines with the mouse, what's happening is that the portion of my window that contains the line is becoming visible (as expected). The undesired effect of this is that if the line is over a part of another application such as a textbox, or hyperlink, this changes the cursor back to the default cursor my my app (arrow), instead of the other applications desired cursor (IBeam). I want my overlay to be seamless to the user, and just show their drawing path, rather than have any interaction with the mouse cursor. See my example below:

  You can see the implementation here: http://jsfiddle.net/BMWZd/25/ When you click on one of the names in Box#1, you will see the circle in the top left corner of the box move up and down. How do I stop that? While also, making sure that it shows in the top left corner of each of the boxes on all browser sizes? So position:absolute will keep it in one place regardless of what happens around it. But it won't put it in the exact same position (relatively) on diff browser sizes. But position:relative will. How do I get the best of both worlds?

  Hello, I have a site at blog.foobar.com that I have closed down, and I want any page requested there to be forwarded to www.foobar.com I want my VirtualHost config to do this for me. I currently have the following lines that does nearly what I want but not exactly: redirect permanent / http://www.foobar.com Unfortunately what happens is that if I ask for blog.foobar.com instead of forwarding to www.foobar.com it serves the pages on blog.foobar.com instead. Is there a way doing this in the VirtualHost config or should I use a .htaccess file instead? Regards Steve

It is saved on the server without any extension. Currently, the "Save As Type" drop down list in the dialog defaults to "Text Document". How can I make it so that it defaults to "All Files"?

• Java - When to use Iterators?

  Hi all, I am trying to better understand when I should and should not use Iterators. To me, whenever I have a potentially large amount of data to iterate through, I write an Iterator for it. If it also lends itself to the Iterator interface, then it seems like a win. I was reading a little bit that there is a lot of overhead with using an Iterator. A good example of where I used an Iterator was to iterate through a bunch of SQL scripts to execute one query at a time, reading it in, then executing it. Is there another performance trade off I should be aware of? Before I used iterators, I would read the entire String of SQL commands to execute into an ArrayList, and the iterate through that. If the import is rather large (like for geolocation data, then the server tends to get bogged down). Walter

This is found in jquery.autocomplete.js and it reads the same in firefox and doesn't cause the error, so i don't really want to change this if at all possible. any advice would help thanks!
