  i have installed ubuntu before on my old laptop, i remember it was a breeze. Now im trying to install it on my desktop and i am stuck. i tried the Windows installer, when restarted and selected linux, the pc went to black screen the shut down... tried with cd, i got the ubuntu purple screen, then shut down. its an intel i5 build with 8G ram and asus motherboard...(don't know if it makes any difference) any help?

  I downloaded ubuntu 13.10 amd64 iso and used all of following methods to make a install media. UNetBootin Universal USB installer (from windows) But I cannot boot from USB pen drive. Some time it just drop me in grub menu of previously installed ubuntu 13.04. Sometime it show a message "Could not open //fallback.efi: 14 ..." for a moment and then just stays there(blank screen). How to boot from USB pen drive?

  I had to use an .iso USB to upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04 Ringtail. Great results, except the USB stick install app asked me to provide an identity so I provided the same one I used for 12.10 . Unfortunately it overwrote my other identity with a fresh one, so now I have no ownership of all my previous profiles, etc. A dumb mistake, but is there a way to take ownership of my previous user identity and merge it with the current?

  i'm trying to set up a backup system with s3fs and the amazon s3 service. i followed this 2 guides: http://qugstart.com/blog/linux/how-to-mount-an-amazon-s3-bucket-as-virtual-drive-on-centos-5-2/ http://blog.eberly.org/2008/10/27/how-i-automated-my-backups-to-amazon-s3-using-rsync/ anyway making a tail to the /var/log/messages i get: Aug 28 13:37:46 server s3fs:###response=403 i already tried creating the authentication file on /etc/passwd-s3fs and setting there the access and private key, passing it trough the command line, i checked several times the credentials and i used it with s3fox, and is working. i also have set the time of the machine (with the date command) to be the same as the amazon S3 servers (i got the time of the S3 server uploading a file with the file manager) not only rsync don't work, commands like ls or cp in the /mnt/s3 didn't work also. any help of how i can solve/debug this?   My Acer Aspire V5-122P-61456G50NSS, model - MS2377, has crashed all together. It came preloaded with Windows 8 and I upgraded to windows 8.1 3-4 days before crash. Unfortunately I did not make any recovery media before the crash. While accessing the eRecovery on Acer store with my PC's serial no. it says nor RCD available for this. I tried recovery by loading recovery manager (Left Alt + F10) Various other advanced startup options (like holding shift key while turning on or pressing F8 key) returns nothing but no luck. However I am able to enter BIOS. After doing research on above condition on various PC forums, now my questions: I read that a 'Windows Recovery Drive' can be made on any PC running Windows 8 and could be used to repair another PC. Does anybody in SuperUser community have that (or a link to download the same from somewhere? as I'm unable to find anybody running windows 8 among my friends). I downloaded a window 8 Pro ISO and made a bootable USB. I was able to go to 'Repair Your Computer' option and after going to 'Reset your PC' option found that my recovery partition has gone/missing. I tried all options available but no luck. Then I tried to install with that Windows 8 Pro ISO but got message: "The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key". before this message I did not got any form to fill product key! Does this mean that the installer was picking up the key from BIOS (OEM Key)? and may be the installation did not succeeded because OEM Windows version was Window 8 and I was trying to install Windows 8 Pro. If that is the case then, could somebody please send me link to download an Windows 8 ISO? I am helpless and couldn't find anywhere on internet (without having to pay for a new key, but I should not pay as the installer will use OEM key).

• SD Card reader not working on Sony Vaio

  This laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-Z31MN/B PCG-6z2m) has been installed with Windows 7 64 bit, all the drivers from Sony's VAIO site are installed, and everything in Device Manager both (a) has a driver and (b) shows as working, no exclamation marks or warnings. "Hide empty drives" in Folder options is disabled so the card reader appears, but will not read the card ("please insert a disk in drive O:"). Previously, when the laptop had Windows XP on it, it could read the same card. Also, Windows update suggested driver ("SD Card Reader") doesn't work, Ricoh own drivers install properly but do the same behaviour. Other 3rd party driver suggestions from forums (Acer and Texas-Instruments FlashMedia) do not seem to install properly. I would post the PCI id if I had it, but it was just showing up as rimsptsk\diskricohmemorystickstorage (while it had the Ricoh Driver installed). Edit: If there are any lower level diagnostic utlities which might shed more light on it I'd welcome hearing of them. Anything which might show get it to put troubleshooting logs in the event log or identify chipsets or whatever... • Word 2010 Crashing

  We have an office with all users using the same spec'ed PCs with the same Image deployed to them, so that the software and configuration is identical. I have one user whos keeps having the install of MS Word 2010 crash intermittently. First i reinstalled Office 2010 Suite, but will have the crashes. The PC has been replaced with a clean install of Windows and Office but we are still having the issues with Word crashing. We have had the user to log onto another PC which we know to be working fine, but again, Word keeps crashing.   I have installed an instance of Win Server 2008 R2 on a Virtual machine. This machine is purposefully on an isolated environment (no internet) for testing purposes. I need to activate the machine and I have my MSDN key ready to go. I just ran through the same steps with a Windows 7 VM, and was able to register using an automated telephone service from Microsoft. With Windows Server 2008, I can see the same option to register using this service, but it is greyed out: Google pointed me to people experiencing this issue but the only workarounds I saw where to use the internet (not an option for me). Does anyone know how to enable this option?

Details: SQL Server 2005 SP1 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, is a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications. The link provided in the resolution column is a trial version of the product and is not supported by the Microsoft SQL Server team In order to install active directory needs to be present. Details:Setup failed to verify the presence of Active Directory for this server. I've got a couple of questions I need answering, hope someone can help. Do I need to install Active Directory for SCOM to work? Can I run SCOM with an SQL 2008 Database? How do I get pass these problems?

• Master/Slave DNS setup vs. rsync'ed DNS servers

  We currently have primary and secondary DNS servers on our corporate network. They are setup in a master/slave type setup, where the slave gets its DNS information from the master. I'm trying to figure out what the real advantage is for the master/slave setup instead of just setting up an automated rsync between the two to keep the DNS settings matched. Can anyone shed some light on this? Or is it just a preferential thing? If that is the case, it seems like the rsync setup would be much easier to setup, maintain and understand.

• How do you import CA certificates onto an Android phone?

  Hi all, I want to connect to my University's wireless using my Nexus One. When I go to "Add Wi-Fi network" in Wireless Settings I fill in the Network SSID and select 802.1x Enterprise for the security and fill everything out. The problem is that our university's wireless uses Thawte Premium Server CA certificate for certification. When I click the drop down list for CA certificate I get nothing in the list (just N/A) Now I have the certificate (Thawte Premium Server CA.pem) and have moved it to my SD card, but it doesn't look like Android automatically detects it. Where should I put the certificate so that the Android wireless manager recognizes it. In other words, how can I import a CA certificate so that Android recognizes that it is on the phone and displays it in the CA Certificate drop down list. Thanks for any help, Tomek P.S. My phone is not rooted EDIT: After doing some research it looks like you are able to install certificates by going to your phone's settings Location & Security Install from SD card Unfortunately it looks like the only accepted file extension is .p12. It does not look like there is a way to import .cer or .pem files (which are the only two files that come with the Thawte certificates) at this moment. It does look like you can use a converter to convert your .cer or .pem files to .p12, however a key file is needed. https://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-converter.html I do not know where to get this key file for the Thawte certificates.

  I have been having a weird problem with Zimbra(7.1.4_GA_2555.DEBIAN5) lately: On the (web)control panel the status keep changing to red every few days. When this is happens the output of zmcontrol status still shows running: antispam Running antivirus Running imapproxy Running ldap Running logger Running mailbox Running memcached Running mta Running snmp Running spell Running stats Running zmconfigd Running Every thing runs fine except automated mail forwarding from one account to another(which is critical for us). I have been through Zimbra forums and the following ALWAYS fixes the issue: su - zimbra -c "zmprov mcf zimbraLogHostname mail.mydomain.com" /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmsyslogsetup /etc/init.d/rsyslog restart su - zimbra -c "zmcontrol restart" After I run the above commands, the status on control panel turns green and mail forwarding starts to work again BUT only for a few days. Other than the above, everything works fine including Server statistics. Anyone seen this issue before?

I tried using pip to do the upgrade, but got the following: $ sudo pip install Django==1.1 Downloading/unpacking Django==1.1 Downloading Django-1.1.tar.gz (5.6Mb): 5.6Mb downloaded Running setup.py egg_info for package Django Installing collected packages: Django Found existing installation: Django 1.0.2-final Not uninstalling Django at /var/lib/python-support/python2.6, outside environment /usr Running setup.py install for Django changing mode of build/scripts-2.6/django-admin.py from 644 to 755 changing mode of /usr/local/bin/django-admin.py to 755 Successfully installed Django It seems like it worked, but it refuses to remove the original Django 1.02, and sure enough: $ pip freeze | grep -i django Django==1.0.2-final django-debug-toolbar==0.8.3 django-sphinx==2.2.3 $ /usr/local/bin/django-admin.py --version 1.0.2 final The problem, apparently, is that pip won't uninstall files outside of /usr. I'd like to remove the existing Django files manually, but I have no idea how to do that, because I'm unfamiliar with how Python packages are laid out in Ubuntu. It looks pretty complicated. The site-packages directory is: $ python -c "from distutils.sysconfig import get_python_lib; print get_python_lib()" /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages However, that's not where the django files live: $ ls -ld /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/[Dd]jango* ls: cannot access /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/[Dd]jango*: No such file or directory There's a /var/lib/python-support/python2.6/django directory, and the __init__.py file in that directory points to /usr/share/python-support/python-django/django/__init__.py. Clearly, pip is able to figure out where the files live. Is there any way to retrieve the list of files associated with the django package so I can just delete them manually?
