• Upgrade to Genuine Windows 8 Pro from non genuine Windows 7

  I have a computer with non-genuine windows 7 (cracked with windows loader). I was thinking of buying / upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. I ran Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe and was said that I can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Can I perform a clean upgrade (format and install) from my current windows 7 to windows 8? In future, in order to re-install Windows 8 do I need to re-install the non-genuine Windows 7 and install on top of it? If my hard disk crash, or I want to install on a new hard disk (clean install), do I need to install windows 7 again before upgrading to Windows 8? If I don't like Windows 8, can I downgrade to Windows 7 genuine?

I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? • Where Is SilverLight Toolkit Installed On My PC?

  This is first question that ran though my mind once I finished installation of SilverLight Toolkit today. When we install the toolkit, the installation wizard does not ask us for any installation folder options and after completion of installation there will not be any entries in to the All Programs section of start menu. After going through the documents, I found that installer silently places all the binaries, themes, samples documents under program files folder depending on the version of the toolkit. If you installed version 4.0 of the toolkit then it will be placed in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0 Here is the list of other useful folder of SilverLight toolkit that we refer to often Bin  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Bin   Samples  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Samples   Themes  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Themes   Source  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Source Please note this above listed folder names will not be exactly same on your computer as they vary from one version to another. • Nvidia Ion HDMI output problems with Acer Revo

  I bought an Acer Revo. First I connected it to my Sony TV via HDMI output. For a few days it worked very well. Then one day when switching on the computer, it boots and the TV screen turns black and the TV displays the error message "no input signal". I connected the Revo to a Samsung LED TV, and it did the same. What do you guys think the problem is? How do I tackle this issue? Any help is deeply appreciated.

  I've set-up FileZilla server a Windows 2008 Machine, I then created the user, password and added a share folder which I set to Home Directory. I then connect to the server from the client computer Status: Connecting to {IP} Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Command: TYPE I Response: 200 Type set to I Command: PASV Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode ({}DATA) Command: MLSD The connection works fine, however no remote directory is selected, it shows as "/" however uploading any file fails. Any suggestions on how to debug this more?

• Chrome Saved Passwords security issue

  If I save a password in Google chrome someone else can easily see the password from Setting -> Advance Settings -> Manage saved passwords -> Show (in required password field) and use it from another computer. Isn't it causing a security issue? I guess it is much secure if it display only the entry and all dots or something for the password (not the actual password). Is there any acceptable idea of showing the password to anyone this easily? Note: Firefox is also showing the actual passwords, I Didn't check in IE.

• After upgrading to 12.04 the scanner from Brother Printer MFC-290C does not work

  I upgraded Ubuntu to 12.04 from 11.10. The printer works, but the scanner doesn't now. In 11.10 I had to install a special driver from Brother. The printer's model is Brother MFC-290C. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite. How can I get the scanner working? Update: I have a 64-bit installation on the Toshiba Satellite. Thank you for your instructions, Chad--24216. I followed each step: 1 through 5. I also updated the Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool. • I get a "could not create lock file" error when trying to run Postgres

  I recently had to replace my postgresql.conf file, and I thought I got the settings right, but when I try to run Postgresql, I get this error: ESTFATAL: could not create lock file "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432.lock": No such file or directory My workaround is to go as root and create a folder called postgresql in /var/run and then change the owner of the folder to postgres. The biggest problem is that I need to do this every single time my computer starts, the folder somehow deletes itself. I tried commenting out the external pid file bit in the conf file, but that didn't change anything.

• Removing a custom vim configuration

  I've added a lot of small mappings to my vimrc that help me work, like noremap H ^ and inoremap jk <esc>. It's diverged enough from vanilla vim that other people at work have trouble coding on my computer. This has been making it harder to pair program with people and get help reviewing code. What I'd like is a way to quickly toggle on/off all of my custom mappings and switch between my vim config and a more 'conventional' one (like relative vs absolute numbering). What would be the best way to do this?

• How can I track down what part of pfsense is blocking website access?

  I've got a PFSense firewall/gateway on our network. Everything works great except for the fact that I cannot access one specific website. • Permission denied when copying on a fileshare in Finder, but copying via command line works

  I'm trying to copy files on a SMB fileshare. When I attempt to copy the files in Finder, I get the following error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items. Copying via Terminal.app (using a simple cp command) works just fine. • Can I switch input methods while Caps Lock is being held down on Windows?

  On my Linux computer, my keyboard switches from English to Serbian when I hold the Caps Lock key. For example, to write c all I have to do is hold Caps Lock, and press the key where c is on the Serbian keyboard (in this case, they key is ; on the English keyboard). When I release Caps Lock, the keyboard "switches back" to English, so that if I press ; I get ; as desired. Super useful. Please note that I know how to change the keyboard layout. I want to use Caps Lock as a modifier key to change the language only while being held down! Is there a way to replicate this behavior on Windows 7 or Windows 8?

• Problems with chip fan and CPU fan

  I have a five-year-old ASUS motherboard that has been working fine for me for years, until I attempted to power it on yesterday and got a CPU fan speed and chip fan speed warning. Cracking open the case and powering the computer on, I can see the chip fan working, but it appears to be hitting something as it makes a very loud buzzing noise. The CPU fan, meanwhile, starts up when I power on, but slows down and stops after a few seconds! How can I address these problems? Is there any way to fix these sort of fan speed issues without just replacing the fan (which in the case of the chip fan, probably means replacing the whole motherboard)?

  Hi, on my compputer here at work, the motherboard on one machine decided to fry over the weekend, all of my saved work is on the harddrive here, it has Vista Business as it's OS and my documents were in My Documents. I have since moved the HDD over to a new computer and am trying to locate these files, as I can't work without them and it's not a case of doing it again, this is over three months work. There were three user accounts, mine, my bosses and a guest accont. Where are these My Documents? How can I get them? Thanks for any help you can provide :)

• Identical traffic

  Hi all, I am running an application server and logging all requests for analysis purposes later. One interesting trend I noticed last night was, I had a visitor from Texas on FIOS share identical traffic with bluecoat in California. What would cause the traffic to be identical? For every request the visitor made, bluecoat made one subsequently within milliseconds of his request. If it is caching, why would there be identical requests? Wouldn't it go through the cache / proxy on their end, and I would only see the proxied request? I'm just curious, this is an interesting pattern that shows similarities of a DDoS attack, but with far fewer resources. Is it possible that the visitor had malware on their computer? Any other ideas? Walter

  I'll just say a few random things One usb wifi device i notice only worked when it plugged into my usb hub Another one worked but couldnt get full speed. It came with an extention cord and when i had it a few feet away i was able to (usually) get full speed I had a wifi card in a tower in the past and just about all laptops have it built in How do i use a USB wifi adapter properly? The first device didnt come with an extention cord and made no mention of bringing it away from the computer. When someone else tested the device he said he was getting full speed while it was plugged into his tower so i was pretty surpised. How do i use USB wifi devices properly?

• Windows 7 laptop's volume with headphones way too loud

  I have two headphones, neither has any amps or volume control, and both have the same problem with this computer. I normally have the volume on 10%, and that is optimal. I'm still very afraid that someday it will be at 100% and i'll accidentally have my headphones on. I tested how loud it is at maximum volume -- it's earsplittingly loud! In fact, it's so loud that if I lay the headphones down on the table, I can listen to a song perfectly clearly from meters away. Is there any way to make the volume control more safe for the ears?

• Added and removed a custom service, but the keybinding is still stuck?

  I created a custom service in Automator to open a new finder window from whatever app I'm in, and assigned it to CMD+E (I was trying to get the WIN+E effect from Windows.) I tried it for a few days, restarted the computer daily, but found it didn't work that well. So I removed the keybinding, then removed the service, deleted the Automator file, etc. So, now the custom service is gone, but CMD+E still goes to the finder from whatever app I'm in! I added a custom shortcut to BBEdit in an attempt to restore its CMD+E action (find with selection), but it STILL goes to the finder! I just want CMD+E to do what it normally does in each app. Any ideas?
