• haystack's RealTimeSearchIndex causes django to hang on data entry

  I'm using django-haystack and a xapian backend with real time indexing (haystack.indexes.RealTimeSearchIndexing) of model data and it works fine on my Ubuntu server. However, it causes django to hang upon data entry when I deployed the app on a RHEL5 server. Everything is hunky dory if I switch to a standard SearchIndex. Running ./manage.py rebuild_index manually works fine too. The major differences between the two setups would be the versions of Python (2.4.3 vs 2.6.4) and the xapian (1.0.4-1 vs 1.0.15). Any suggestions on what may be the problem? Nothing interesting appears in the logs, and I've tried different databases (mysql, sqlite3) and deployment methods (mod_python, wsgi) with no luck yet. I have noted the warning on the haystack docs stating that RealTimeSearchIndex is only handled gracefully with a Solr backend, however I'm running a very traffic site with only occasional writes so I'm fine with some CPU overheads on writes.

Why? As far as I know base.Dispose should call the Dispose method of base class only... isn't it? Who call back the Dispose(bool) of UnityManager? How to prevent that? Thanks.

• Efficient JSON encoding for data that may be binary, but is often text

  I need to send a JSON packet across the wire with the contents of an arbitrary file. This may be a binary file (like a ZIP file), but most often it will be plain ASCII text. I'm currently using base64 encoding, which handles all files, but it increases the size of the data significantly - even if the file is ASCII to begin with. Is there a more efficient way I can encode the data, other than manually checking for any non-ASCII characters and then deciding whether or not to base64-encode it? I'm currently writing this in Python, but will probably need to do the same in Java, C# and C++, so an easily portable solution would be preferable.

  Dear all, I have decided to develop a native iPhone apps as a compliment to our webapps. Now I am wondering what are my options to send data remotely from the iPhone apps - since the database is online - to our online database. What I can think of on top of my head - since I come from web dev background - is JSON. My webapps is built using Rails, so I figure it would not be difficult to accept JSON request from the iPhone apps. But the next question is, is it difficult to send JSON data remotely from the iPhone apps? If JSON is not recommendable, what are my other options? Thank you so much for the assistance.   Hey, I've tried to update jQuery to its latest version on a system I'm working and I'm having this issue: I have a file that posts data to a .php: $.post( 'ajax_Save.php', { id: [$('#service_id').val()], number: [$('#number').val()] }, function(data){ ... }); On ajax_Save.php var_dump($_POST) gives: array(26) { ["id"]=> array(1) { [0]=> string(5) "18204" } ["number"]=> array(1) { [0]=> string(5) "18250" }... With jQuery version 1.2.2 the result is: array(26) { ["id"]=> string(5) "18204" ["order_number"]=> string(5) "18250" Which is OK. Any clues? Thx

• DOM memory issue with IE8 (inserting lots of JSON data)

  i am developing a small web-utility that displays some data from some database tables. i have the utility running fine on FF, Safari, Chrome..., but the memory management on IE8 is horrendous. the largest JSON request I do will return information to create around 5,000 or so rows in a table within the browser (3 columns in the table). i'm using jquery to get the data (via getJSON). to remove the old/existing table, i'm just doing a $('#my_table_tbody').empty(). to add the new info to the table, within the getJSON callback, i am just appending each table row that i am creating to a variable, and then once i have them all, i am using $('#my_table_tbody').append(myVar) to add it to the existing tbody. i don't add the table rows as they are created because that seems to be a lot slower than just adding them all at once. does anyone have any recommendation on what someone should do who is trying to add thousands of rows of data to the DOM? i would like to stay away from pagination, but i'm wondering if i don't have a choice. • Sending binary data from ASP to .net component

  The ASP application allows uploading of image files (jpg, gif, tif). These files are sent to a .net component registered in the GAC of the server. In the component file is encoded using System.Text.Unicode to byte[] array. This encoding is done with some data loss. The byte array has values 253 and 255 in consequetive elements. What could be the problem ? I'm sending the binary data as a string. Please help me... Thanks in advance, John

  I'm planning on creating a C# Windows Forms app as an extension for a third-party Win32 application but I'm stumped as to how to do this right now. The farthest I've gotten is knowing it involves Win32 Hooking and that there's this open source project called EasyHook that's supposed to allow me to do this. I'd like to know how I can get the text from a textbox or some other data from a control in a third-party Win32 application. The text/data in a control is to be captured from the external application's running window the moment the user presses a button. I guess the question can be summed up as follows: How do you determine the event to hook to when the user clicks a certain button? How do you get the value displayed by a Win32 control at the time the button is clicked?

  Hello all, I'm creating an offline-capable IPhone app for showing pictures on picasa. It was pretty simple to use JQTouch and Google Data API (via JSONP), so I was able to show the albums and thumbnails in 3 hours, however I want that data to be cached, and for that I'm going to use the HTML 5 Application Cache (via xxx.manifest file). Now the question is what hosts shall I write there in order to cache pictures hosted on picasa. So far I've seen something like lh6.google.com or lh4.ggpht.com does anybody knows the full list of servers?

  Howday, I want to push data to flex clients. I am talking about anywhere between 5000-15000 concurrent users, need to get data every time a currency is changed so that means lots of changes for lots of users. I have been looking into WebOrb.net, but the performance seem very poor (100 users concurrent) for a product so pricy (we purchased a license). So, I have to look into alternatives, I know there's fluorineFx but it seems no one is really using it for products and it lacks in examples and documentation. My question is: what products can answer my needs (.net backend) and what are the performance I can expect out of these products? Thanks

• Universal iPhone/iPad Windows-based app with Core Data crashes on iPhone SDK 4 beta 3

  Hi all. I installed iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3. When I create a new Windows-based universal app with Core Data (File New Project Windows-based Application --- select Universal in drop down and check the "Use Core Data for storage" check box) the app launches fine into the iPhone simulator but crashes in the iPad simulator. The console message returned is: dyld: Symbol not found: _OBJC_CLASS_$_NSURL Referenced from: /Users/tarfa/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/3.2/Applications/5BB644DC-9370-4894-8884-BAEBA64D9ED0/Universal.app/Universal Expected in: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.2.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework/CoreFoundation I'm stumped. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

  I'm curious. Apple says in the docs: Core Data automatically fires faults when necessary (when a persistent property of a fault is accessed). However, firing faults individually can be inefficient, and there are better strategies for getting data from the persistent store (see “Batch Faulting and Pre-fetching with the SQLite Store”). NSFetchRequest has this feature: [fetchRequest setFetchBatchSize:20]; Is this essentially performing such a batch faulting like recommended? Just to make this clear for others, faulting does not mean "turning into a fault" but it means "materializing it", just like "making a Scooby-Doo out of it". Pretty ugly wording error, in my opinion, but it's at least consistent in the docs ;)

  So I am using Limonade PHP which has a RESTful design which emulates PUT, POST, DELETE routes for create, update, delete. I am trying to develop some form validation which is going well. The major problem I am facing though is how to return my filtered data (which has failed validation) back to repopulate the create or edit form. How would this be done? I currently have for creating a page: /admin/page/new -> GET function /admin/page -> POST function + validate + pass, update db + fail, add errors to flash, redirect to /admin/page/mew It all falls down as I do not know how to populate the /admin/page/new with the invalid, but filtered data.

• Linq to Sql Data class in dbml

  I am abit curious about dbml.... Should I create one dbml file for one database or separated into different parts e.g. User dbml (only tables relate to users) etc? When I do this I will have abit of problems. Assume the User dbml has a User table and if the Order dbml has a User table as well, this won't be allowed if the entity namespace are the same. If I have set a different entity namespace for each of the dbml, it works but this will gives me a different entity of User table. When a single data returns to Business Logic layer, there is a difficulty of knowing which entity namespace of the user table to be used. If I built one dbml file instead of having separate dbml, will single dbml appear slower than the separated dbml version when fetching the data from the database.

• How can I sort an NSTableColumn of NSStrings ignoring "The " and "A "?

  I've got a simple Core Data application that I'm working on to display my movie collection. I'm using an NSTableView, with it's columns bound to attributes of my Core Data store through an NSArrayController object. At this point the columns sort fine(for numeric values) when the column headers are clicked on. The issue I'm having is with the String sorting, they sort, however it's done in standard string fashion, with Uppercase letters preceding lowercase(i.e. Z before a). In addition to getting the case sorting to work properly, I would like to be able to ignore a prefix of "The " or "A " when sorting the strings. What is the best way to go about this in Objective-C/Cocoa?

  Hi, Has anyone installed Faceted Search v3.0 for MOSS working with date columns? When I map a column of DateTime type and click the Search BreadCrumb webpart "remove filter" link (next to the edit filter link) an exception is thrown. The search Breadcrumb webpart throws an error when I click the "Remove filter" link (this is the one represented by the broken link icon - next to the "Edit facet" icon). This seems to only occur after clicking the "Remove filter" link for Facets of DateTime type after which it occurs on every instance for all Facets. • Referencing the last row's data in Crystal Report

  I have a report where the fields come from data pulled from a SQL server. I have a total field that i have added to the report...however i have an interesting conundrum--i was hoping someone had a formula i could use. Three of my columns do NOT need summation...however my project requirements are telling me instead to just pull the last number from the last row in the report and putting that in the total row. To better clarify: 1999 0.1% 0.2% 0.3% 2001 -2% 0.3% 3.4% Basically, in the total field, i'd be pulling the values from 2001 since it is the last report row. In my total row, i want to have -2%, 0.3% and 3.4% showing (since those are the last row's values). SO basically, i just want to pull the last report row's data (NOT total it). Anybody have a formula i can use for this?

• Where do DQL statements live in an application that is using Zend Framework and Doctrine

  In an application that is using Zend Framework 1.10 and Doctrine 1.2, where should the DQL statements live if our application is built such that it has a Service Layer and a Gateway(aka Doctrine_Table) layer. It seems that our possibilities include: 1) Placing the DQL statements in the Service layer which seems to be a bit too high in our application hierarchy to store DQL. 2) Placing the DQL statements within each model's Table/Gateway which seems a bit redundant because we also need to expose the DQL statements that do things such as getAllUsers() through the Service layer. Which of these is a preferable design? We intend to make use of the Service layer as much as possible so that other projects might consume various parts of our application.

• ASP.NET MVC- Bizarre problem - suddennly lost all LINQTO SQL data context objects

  I was making an edit to a long existing project. Specifically I added some fields to a table and had to delete the table from the LINQTOSQL designer and re-add it. doesn't Also had to do the same for a view. Mode some other code changes and went to build . Now my project won't build because it can't resolve any of the data context objects (all tables and views) in my code. I don't know what I did or how this happeened. I have many tables and views in the project's L2S data context so I don't wont to try and do over. Please any suggestions on how to resolve this problem are greatly appreciated. Desparate! The error messages I am getting are the familiar The type or namespace name 'equipment' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
