• GNOME 3.8 stutters / lags

  I recently installed Fedora 19 beta and noticed unusually laggy behaviour of GNOME Shell (3.8) on the Nouveau driver on a nVidia 9200GS (also with nVidia driver) So I thought this could be related to Fedora so I installed Ubuntu 13.04 which comes with GNOME 3.6. Everything was buttery smooth as it has always been, but once I upgraded GNOME to 3.8, I experience the same laggy performance on Ubuntu as well. I'm talking about the animations, such as the window overview in activities, openSUSE live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.8 = laggy Fedora live image with 3.8 = laggy Fedora install with 3.8 = laggy Does anyone have a clue what could be going on?

• After 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade, can only login via Classic (No Effects)

  Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, everything seemed to go okay until immediately after login: the desktop goes into a "corrupted" looking state (similar to having too high resolution set). I can see some kind of movement by moving the mouse around/right clicking, and can enter text terminals via ctrl + alt + f1 It does this in both plain "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic", and only seems to login/startup properly with Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). I have checked my video card (Radeon X600) and run the unity support test which passes with all "yes" results (Unity supported: yes): /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p I have tried re-installing my Ubuntu desktop: rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop With no success. I can workaround for now with Classic (No Effects), but I'd really like to find the root problem. Any suggestions on what else to try would be appreciated!

• Ubuntu Surround Sound Help?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Sony Vaio VGC-RB34G ( http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/sony-vaio-vgc-rb34g/4505-3118_7-31289053.html ) with an integrated Realtek High Definition Audio sound card. On Windows, I can set up the sound card to provide sound to my surround sound system from the Line Out, Line In, and Mic ports, as in all of these are producing audio. I have tried to use alsa to achieve this result with no luck. Is there any possible way to do this on Ubuntu? Thanks! • New Solaris Cluster!

  We released Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 recently. OSC offers both High Availability (HA) and also Scalable Services capabilities. HA delivers automatic restart of software on the same cluster node and/or automatic failover from a failed node to a working cluster node. Software and support is available for both x86 and SPARC systems. The Scalable Services features manage multiple cluster nodes all providing a load-balanced service such as web servers or app serves. OSC 4.1 includes the ability to recover services from software failures, failure of hardware components such as DIMMs, CPUs, and I/O cards, a global file system, rolling upgrades, and much more. • What are the benefits of NoSQL?

  I'm struggling to see how NoSQL brings any advantages to a system, so I'm interested in hearing from people who have chosen to use it, both the reasons they chose NoSQL, and positive and negative experiences in implementation and use. My first impressions are that NoSQL is a product of the availability of very large, very cheap storage; it seems that a million record database could easily have a 100MByte overhead in field labels embedded in the records. This goes against one of my software design instincts - remove redundancy in code and data whenever practical. However, NoSQL is being used with success in large high-traffic systems, so I must be missing something, looking forward to your responses.

• Sound issue in Lubuntu

  I'm recently having a problem in my Lubuntu deskptop: sound through the speakers doesn't seem to work. The funny thing is: it works when I plug in my earphones. • Configuring trace file size and number in WebCenter Content 11g

  Lately I've been doing a lot of debugging using the System Output tracing in WebCenter Content 11g.  This is built-in tracing in the content server which provides a great level of detail on what's happening under the hood.  You can access the settings as well as a view of the tracing by going to Administration -> System Audit Information.  From here, you can select the tracing sections to include.  Some of my personal favorites are searchquery,  systemdatabase, userstorage, and indexer.  Usually I'm trying to find out some information regarding a search, database query, or user information.  Besides debugging, it's also very helpful for performance tuning. • Is C++ indispensible for AAA game engines, as long as we have console-platform games? [closed]

  C++ has remained the industry standard for game engines much because of its features.. The primary reasons are(afaik): Technical reasons - High performance, native runtime, portibility, negligible latency, and more recently concurrency. Socio-Technical reasons - Availability of Libraries, Legecy stuff, most scripting languages on games have a good C api (ex lua), Good IDEs and most recently improved Development time.(C++11) Social reasons - People know C++, Licenced technologies, and battle proven. Does this make C++ for game engines indispensible, so long we have game consoles? Would not, the above features make me implement new graphics technology in C++ only? Edit: Will learning C++ garuntee me a job as a game engine dev In the future? I want to master every aspect of the language, but I already know C# and python. Should I allocate my time learning C++. I want to be a game engine developer.

  Based on a multitude of questions related to temporarily disabling ReSharper, and also on certain research data, I can see that a considerable share of ReSharper users have it disabled most of the time. They tend to enable it for a limited period of time (say, several hours), do whatever they need to do using its functionality, and disable it back until the next time they feel they need to use it. If you're using ReSharper (or other similar VS extensions, to that matter) in such occasional manner, can you clarify why you're doing this? Is your behavior based on performance, or other considerations? What kinds of tasks do you enable ReSharper for in this scenario?

• Does Ubuntu 12.04 supports for B75 boards?

  I want to build a new computer with Intel G840 CPU and Gigabyte B75M-D3H motherboard and install Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) 12.04 64bit on it. However, I'm worried about whether the chip is too new and whether that Linux Kernel now has support for it. According to the article [Phoronix] Intel Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge Linux Performance Review ,the Linux kernel is ready to work on the chip. Existing Intel Sandy Bridge motherboards/chipsets are compatible with Ivy Bridge processors, but earlier this month Intel launched the new Panther Point chipsets that are already compatible with Linux too: the B75, H77, Z75, Z77, HM75, HM76, UM77, and HM77. But I didn't find further information or cases about running Ubuntu on the chip. So,is it OK to run Ubuntu on the board? Do I need to upgrade the kernel to a newer version (3.4 or 3.5 etc.) to get the system more smoothly? Or should I choose boards with H61 chip? Thank for your response!

• FxCop ... Where have you been all my life?

  I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized. EPM-specific instructions are available in Knowledge Management article 1304885.1. This RDA version incorporates two new modules (EAS=Essbase Administration Services; HWA=Hyperion Web Analysis) and improvements in modules and profiles relating to twelve other Hyperion applications (EPM, EPMA, ESS, FCM, HFM, HFR, HIR, HPL, HPSV, HSS, PR, and HSV). To follow best practice, run related RDA profiles [for example: "perl rda.pl -vnSCRPp Hyperion1112_EAS"] and attach the output zip file [by default in \rda\output\] to your service requests. The comprehensive set of details provided in such output files should help technicians to avoid delays in handling service requests (by avoiding ping-pong communications resulting from repeated requests for additional values).

• Initialize array in amortized constant time -- what is this trick called?

  There is this data structure that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate over it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the value is treated as "clean". This has come up in this answer on Stack Overflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.

  I have a job offer in a dead technology (specific programming language) that I don't want to work with nor do I believe it will offer many jobs in the future. It requires twice a year travels abroad, which not a plus in my eyes. On the other hand the money on the table is high. What would you do? edit: as its not clear I got a job in a programming language that is different from the academic programming language I worked with. Now I see it as a mistake to head to that direction.

• Is it a good idea to make a game for one aspect ratio and arbitrary screen resolution?

  After several very small games I have decided to make something more standalone (2D) and playable. However, I have met the problem of every game that is going to be played in more screen resolutions. Basically, after some research I see that there are several solutions. This seems to be the simplest one: Let's say I define a constant aspect ratio for the game (16:9) and the whole game will be created for a resolution 1680 x 1050. The game will be rendered in this resolution and then I will be able to scale the render to match the player's display resolution. Therefore the game might be playable on almost any resolution, while it would keep the aspect ratio. So, if the game was run on 4:3 display, the top and the bottom of the display would be filled with black color. It seems easy, but my question is - Is this a good approach for a simple game? The game will be simple, but I want to maintain high quality.

  If you're interested in using Ops Center, you'll want to get up and running as quickly and effectively as possible. One way to do this would be to work your way through the documentation library - use the Linux or Oracle Solaris install guides, then go through the Feature Guide and Admin Guide to start using the software. They're thorough, but they're a lot of reading. But if you're looking to install a simple deployment quickly, and you don't want to do all of the configuration work right off the bat, you can use the Quick Start Guide. It's a streamlined procedure that runs you through installing a single Enterprise Controller and co-located Proxy Controller, and then shows you how to discover assets quickly. Once you've discovered these assets, it describes how to use the analytics feature to view their performance, and use monitoring to keep track of their statuses and health. You'll have to do some additional configuration to use features like OS provisioning, OS updates, and virtualization, but the Quick Start guide gives you an overview of how to install and start using features quickly.

  Which vendor provides better GPGPU. my requirements are confined to rendering utilising the GPU for BSDF building for e.g. Intel started providing Ivy Bridge chipset GPU, which are comparably fast to HD5960 cards. I'm not that against nvidia or amd. but I'm a fan of Intel. how it compares to nvidia in price and performance. if possible may I know, how all of them perform with OpenCL?? I'm not sure if it is right to ask it here. but I don't know where to ask.
