• ASP.NET MVC 2 and authentication using WIF (Windows Identity Foundation)

  Are there any decent examples of the following available: Looking through the WIF SDK, there are examples of using WIF in conjunction with ASP.NET using the WSFederationAuthenticationModule (FAM) to redirect to an ASP.NET site thin skin on top of a Security Token Service (STS) that user uses to authenticate (via supplying a username and password). If I understand WIF and claims-based access correctly, I would like my application to provide its own login screen where users provide their username and password and let this delegate to an STS for authentication, sending the login details to an endpoint via a security standard (WS-*), and expecting a SAML token to be returned. Ideally, the SessionAuthenticationModule would work as per the examples using FAM in conjunction with SessionAuthenticationModule i.e. be responsible for reconstructing the IClaimsPrincipal from the session security chunked cookie and redirecting to my application login page when the security session expires. Is what I describe possible using FAM and SessionAuthenticationModule with appropriate web.config settings, or do I need to think about writing a HttpModule myself to handle this? Alternatively, is redirecting to a thin web site STS where users log in the de facto approach in a passive requestor scenario?

• Facebook FQL - How do I fetch the posts I made to a friend's wall

  I have a facebook desktop app with some test users all having granted the stream_read & offline access permissions. I can easily retrieve posts to each users' stream & profile. What I cannot do easily is retrieve posts that a user has made to one of their friend's walls. In fact, this used to work with a rather complex multiquery, but has stopped working now, or is working only intermittently... Does anyone care to share their method if one exists or discuss what restrictions there might be to this type of complex querying?

• cakephp routing problem, plugin routing works but not others

  I'm having a strange routing problem with a site I just uploaded, and I've made a number of changes to test what's happening. It doesn't make any sense. My setup is: - I'm using one plugin, which I've included all the routing in the routes.php file. - I've also included the routes for two other controllers, 'events' and 'updates' they look like this: Router::connect('/login', array('plugin' = 'pippoacl', 'controller' = 'users', 'action' = 'login')); Router::connect('/logout', array('plugin' = 'pippoacl', 'controller' = 'users', 'action' = 'logout')); Router::connect( '/events/', array( 'controller' = 'events', 'action' = 'index')); Router::connect('/updates', array('controller' = 'updates', 'action' = 'index')); What happens when I try to get to 'events' is that I get an error message saying: "Not Found Error: The requested address '/Events' was not found on this server." I've checked the database and it's accessible, through the plugin's model/controller/view. I've also made sure the model/controllers for 'events' and 'updates' are there. Can anyone tell me how to trouble shoot this? Thanks, Paul

• What useful things could a javaScript library provide?

  In many of my answers I repeatedly urge users not to use JavaScript libraries like jQuery. I even wrote a blog post about the problems that using a library create. Some of these problems include holding back native standards development, keeping users comfortably using IE, and abstracting the developer from real JavaScript. If a site doesn't require IE as part of its audience, then how are libraries useful? The other popular browsers share extremely similar implementations and work well with things like JavaScript 1.6 arrays and AJAX. This is not a troll question, I'm truly wondering what they're useful for.

• How to resolve symbolic links in a shell script

  Given an absolute or relative path (in a Unix-like system), I would like to determine the full path of the target after resolving any intermediate symlinks. Bonus points for also resolving ~username notation at the same time. If the target is a directory, it might be possible to chdir() into the directory and then call getcwd(), but I really want to do this from a shell script rather than writing a C helper. Unfortunately, shells have a tendency to try to hide the existence of symlinks from the user (this is bash on OS X): $ ls -ld foo bar drwxr-xr-x 2 greg greg 68 Aug 11 22:36 bar lrwxr-xr-x 1 greg greg 3 Aug 11 22:36 foo -> bar $ cd foo $ pwd /Users/greg/tmp/foo $ What I want is a function resolve() such that when executed from the tmp directory in the above example, resolve("foo") == "/Users/greg/tmp/bar".

• Facebox window closes after submit

  Hi all I have a question regarding Facebox. When I click a certain link on my page, the Facebox modal window opens just fine. But inside this modal window I'd like to have a form that users can submit. When the users click the submit-button, the whole page refreshes, and my Facebox-window is closed. This makes sense to me, but I'd like it to work differently. I want to give the user a confirmation, inside of the modal window, after they have submitted the form. So when a user clicks the submit-button, a confirmation should be showed inside og the modal-window. Anybody know if this is possible?   Hi, well I have my users table and my department table, so I have in XAML a Datagrid and a Dataform, in my dataform i have a combobox that is filled from the department table (all possible departments), I bind it to the Department attribute from my user, and it shows it. The problem is that when I click the edit button of the dataform the combobox goes blank... if i cancel the edit it goes back to the department of the user. Another thing is if i edit the user and choose a department when i commit the edit it works and when i edit that same user the combobox doesnt go blank now ... but for the other users it does if i havent specifically choosen the department in the combobox.

• Improving ANTLR DSL parse-error messages

  I'm working on a domain-specific language (DSL) for non-programmers. Non-programmers make a lot of grammar mistakes: they misspell keywords, they don't close parentheses, they don't terminate blocks, etc. I'm using ANTLR to generate my parser; it provides a nifty mechanism for handling RecognitionExceptions to improve error handling. But I'm finding it pretty hard to develop good error-handling code for my DSL. At this point, I'm considering ways to simplify the language to make it easier for me to provide users with high-quality error messages, but I'm not really sure how to go about this. I think I want to reduce the ambiguity of errors somehow, but I'm not sure how to implement that idea in a grammar. In what ways can I simplify my language to improve parse-error messages for my users? EDIT: Updated to clarify that I'm interested in ways to simplify my language, not just ANTLR error-handling tips in general. (Though, thanks for those!)

  Hi, I'm planning on writing a simple web application that will be used by lots of users (as complicated as a simple bookmarking app) and I'm trying to decide which framework/language to use. I'm very experienced with Spring/Hibernate and Java in general but new to both Grails and RoR (and Spring ROO). The only reason I'm considering RoR is because Java hosting is MUCH more expensive than RoR hosting (which is supported by almost any hosting vendor for 5$ per month). Assuming the price wasn't an issue, which one of the frameworks/languages mentioned above would you recommend for a Java developer (who knows how to configure Spring/Hibernate etc.)? I'm afraid that by using RoR I won't be able to easily support many users who are using the website at the same time. thanks

• Erlang: 2 database on 2 webserver ??

  I have created a blogging system with php+postgresql. Now I want to add a web chat ( in REAL TIME for Million of users simultaneously ) where every message is saved in database. I am thinking to use Erlang+Mnesia on a different webserver for this issue. Message's table will be like this: message_id, user_id, message, date user_id should be related with users table in Postgresql database in another webserver. How can I do that without lose performance ? If you have any other creative solutions tell me please ;).

• Silverlight 3 Offline Mode

  Has anyone found that the userbase is more reluctant to install Silverlight 3 Apps in offline mode because they have no control over "where" the app is installed to? I've had a few issues of a similar nature in the past, with 'power users' getting upset that they can't specify install directories. Are there any workarounds? Any way to get the Silverlight offline installs to prompt for specific install locations and the like? The specific reason given is that users want to install apps to remote storage, like a USB stick or something.

  I am using Autoit to create an auto-install app. There is an dialog which contains a ListBox control, and in the listbox there are some choices for user (the detailed choices depends on user's machine, for some users there maybe only one choice, for some users there may be 3 choices etc), so I want to get the texts in the listbox to make the decision.   At the moment I'm developing a web based application using Silverlight 3.0. For the business rules I'm looking for a rules engine that's both easy to use for me and my users, which will work with SL3. Is something like that available out of the box or will I need to roll my own? I've Googled and looked around the various code sites (Codeplex, Code Project etc), but didn't see anything that suits my needs. I did also have a good long look at NxBRE, but it's Rules syntax is too complex for 'dummy' users.

• Silverlight 4: How to find ContextMenu' s Parent Control from menuitem_click?

  I have a datagrid and I added silverlight 4 toolkit contextmenu to textbox in datagrid as follows. When users right click on the textbox, contextmenu is being displayed. When users click the menu item with Header "Test", "MenuItem_Click" is getting executed. • Facebook Application Tab URL

  I have a facebook application that can be added to fan pages as a tab. The application requires that users are authenticated in order to use it. This can be accomplished by using requirelogin=1 in a link which is visible only to users who have NOT added the application. This part works fine. However, after the user has given my application permission from the dhtml pop up that requirelogin opens, I want the tab to reload. In order to do that, I need the full URL to be included in the link as follows: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAGE_NAME/PAGE_ID?v=app_APP_ID" requirelogin=1>Authorize</a> I cannot figure out how to get the full url or, at least, the PAGE_NAME to build this url dynamically. Seems like the app should be able to know where it is without any special permissions.

• Are PackageMaker installations with preinstall scripts broken on Snow Leopard?

  Everything worked on 10.5, but now my PackageMaker installation project is broken. Or is there some requirement regarding preinstall scripts that I do not understand?
