• Trying to migrate Windows 7 install of Adobe CS5 to Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine - 'Internal errors - invalid paramters received"

  I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. Copied "Program Files (x86)\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Adobe" "Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe" "Documents and Settings\Don\Application Data\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/users/don/Application Data/Adobe" "Windows\System32\odbcint.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll" ,and lastly "Windows\System32\odbc32.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll". From Terminal, $ wine regedit adobe.reg. Right clicked on Photoshop.exe and selected "Open with Wine". Got the message "Wine Program Crash, Internal errors - invalid parameters received." So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot. • How to configure remote access to multiple subnets behind a SonicWALL NSA 2400

  I have a client that uses a SonicWALL NSA 2400 as their firewall. I need to setup a second LAN subnet for a handful of PC. Management has decided that there should be a second subnet even though intend to allow access across the two subnets - I know... I'm having trouble getting communication across the 2 subnets. I can ping each gateway, but I cannot ping or seem to route traffic fron subnet A to subnet B. Here is my current setup: X0 Interface: LAN zone with IP addres 192.168.1.1 X1 Interface: WAN zone with WAN IP address X2 Interface: LAN zone with IP address 192.168.75.1 I have configured ARP and routes for the secondar subnet (X2) according to this SonicWALL KB article: http://www.sonicwall.com/downloads/supporting_multiple_firewalled_subnets_on_sonicos_enhanced.pdf using "Example 1". At this point I don't minding if I have to throw the SonicWALL GVC software VPN client into the mix to make it work. It feel like I have an Access Rule issue, but for testing I made LAN LAN, WAN LAN and VPN LAN rules wide open with the same results.

• Apache SSL losing session over load balancer

  I have two physical Apache servers behind a load balancer. The load balancer was supposed to be set up so that a user would always be sent to the same physical server after the first request, to preserve sessions. This worked fine for our web apps until we added SSL to the setup. Now the user can successfully login, see the home page, but clicking on any other internal links logs the user right out. I traced the issue to the fact that while initial authentication is performed by server 1, clicking on internal links leads to having the request sent to server 2. Server 2 does not share sessions with server 1, and the user is kicked out. How can I fix it? Do I need to share sessions between the two servers? If so, could you point me to a good guide for doing this? Thanks.

• Would it be a good idea to work on letting people add arrays of numbers in javascript?

  I am a very mathematically oriented programmer, and I happen to be doing a lot of java script these days. I am really disappointed in the math aspects of javascript: the Math object is almost a joke because it has so few methods you can't use ^ for exponentiation the + operator is very limited, you cant add array's of numbers or do scalar multiplication on arrays Now I have written some pretty basic extensions to the Math object and have considered writing a library of advanced Math features, amazingly there doesn't seem to be any sort of standard library already out even for calculus, although there is one for vectors and matricies I was able find. The notation for working with vectors and matricies is really bad when you can't use the + operator on arrays, and you cant do scalar multiplication. For example, here is a hideous expression for subtracting two vectors, A - B: Math.vectorAddition(A,Math.scalarMultiplication(-1,B)); I have been looking for some kind of open-source project to contribute to for awhile, and even though my C++ is a bit rusty I would very much like to get into the code for V8 engine and extend the + operator to work on arrays, to get scalar multiplication to work, and possibly to get the ^ operator to work for exponentiation. These things would greatly enhance the utility of any mathematical javascript framework. I really don't know how to get involved in something like the V8 engine other than download the code and start working on it. Of course I'm afraid that since V8 is chrome specific, that without browser cross-compatibility a fundamental change of this type is likely to be rejected for V8. I was hoping someone could either tell me why this is a bad idea, or else give me some pointers about how to proceed at this point to get some kind of approval to add these features. Thanks!

• Game Resource Generation

  I am currently building a game that has a "City" entity. These cities generate and consume resources such as food variably over a period of time. I need to be able query the server often to find exactly how much food the city at any given point. These queries can take place multiple times per minute. There could also be 400,000 cities to track at a given time. How would you handle tracking these resources? Would you do it in real time, keeping an instance of the city in memory on the server, with some sort of a snapshot in time of the resources, then computing the growth/consumption from that snapshot time for subsequent queries? Would you work exclusively with a database, using a similar "snapshoting" scheme? Maybe a mixture of the 2, caching recently queried cities in memory for a period of time? There is also a lot of other data that each city needs to track. A player can queue units to build in a barrack. The armies available in the city will need to be updated as units complete. I'm interested in everyone's input on where/when/how you'd manage the real time data.

• XNA Skinned Animated Mesh Rendering Exported from Maya

  I am working on translating an old RTS game engine I wrote from DirectX9 to XNA. My old models didn't have animation & are an old format, so I'm trying with an FBX file. I temporarily "borrowed" a model from League of Legends just to test if my rendering is working correctly. I imported the mesh/bones/skin/animation into Maya 2012 using an "unnamed" 3rd-party import tool. (obviously I'll have to get legit models later, but I just want to test if my programming is correct). Everything looks correct in maya and it renders the animations flawlessly. I exported everything into a single FBX file (with only a single animation). I then tried to load this model using the example at the following site: http://create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/skinned_model With my exported FBX, the animation looks correct for most of the frames, however at random times it screws up for a split second. Basically, the body/arms/head will look right, but the leg/foot will shoot out to a random point in space for a second & then go back to the normal position. The original FBX from the sample looks correct in my program. It seems odd that my model was imported into maya wrong, since it displays fine in Maya. So, I'm thinking either I'm exporting it wrong, or the sample code is bad & the model from the sample caters to the samples bad code. I'm new to 3D programming & maya, so chances are I'm doing something wrong in the export. I'm using mostly the defaults, but I've tried all 3 interpolation modes (quaternion, euler, resample).   Hi, I'm looking into ways of improving requirements management. Currently, we have a Word document published on a Web site. Unfortunately, we cannot (to my knowledge) look at changes from one revision to the next. I would greatly prefer to be able to do so, much like with a wiki or VCS (or both, like the wiki's on bitbucket!). Also, each document describes changes devs are expected to meet by a given deadline. There is no collection of accumulated app features documented anywhere, so it's sometimes hard to distinguish between a bug and a (poorly-designed) feature when trying to make quick fixes to legacy apps. So I had an idea I wanted to get feedback on. What about: Using a wiki so that we can track who changed what when (mostly to even see if any edits were made since the last time one looked). Having one, say, wiki page per product rather than one per deadline, keeping up with all features of the product rather than the changes that should be implemented. This way, I can look at a particular revision of the page to see what the app should do at a given point in time, and I can look at changes to the page since the last release for the requirements to be implemented by the next deadline. • LAN access via USB from Ipod Touch?

  I need to browse the local web server from my Ipod Touch to test apps we're developing. I'm not allowed to install a separate wireless access point which would be the easiest solution. Can I use the USB cable for this? Also, the local PC is a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu. Has anyone managed to use the wireless port to create an ad hoc connection to an Ipod Touch so the Ipod can browse the Ubuntu web server? This would be an alternate option for me. Thank you!

  Do you find the crippling effect that most anti virus software has on a computer's performance worth the "security" they provide? I've never been able to really tell myself its worth it, and have used my computer without "protection" for years without any problems. Jeff Atwood wrote about this a while back, taking a similar stance. So I'm looking for some discussion on the merits and downfalls of antivirus software, and whether you personally think its worth the hassle. One point I do think is valid is that I am probably okay with not running it because I know if something goes wrong I have the ability to make it right (most of the time) but I can't really recommend the same for family as they may not be able to...

  I've a citrix server where multiple users use a multiple java application. Is there a way to reduce the memory footprint of the jvm itself? The max heap is already set fairly low (64MB), as the permgen (32MB) space and we're to the point that the jvm itself uses way more memory than the application itself (the committed area is around 350MB) I'm looking for a way to reduce the jvm ram usage or to make the all the applications run within the same jvm or any other way of sharing common pages between running jvm (if possible) or try switch to switch to a jvm if a jvm exists having optimizations relative to this scenario currently using windows 2003 server and sun java virtual machine 1.6

• mod_proxy failing as forward proxy in simple configuration

  (On Mac OS X 10.6, Apache 2.2.11) Following the oft-repeated googled advice, I've set up mod_proxy on my Mac to act as a forward proxy for http requests. My httpd.conf contains this: <IfModule mod_proxy> ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all </Proxy> (Yes, I realize that's not ideal, but I'm behind a firewall trying to figure out why the thing doesn't work at all) So, when I point my browser's proxy settings to the local server (ip_address:80), here's what happens: I browse to http://www.cnn.com I see via sniffer that this is sent to Apache on the Mac Apache responds with its default home page ("It works!" is all this page says) So... Apache is not doing as expected -- it is not forwarding my browser's request out onto the Internet to cnn. Nothing in the logfile indicates an error or problem, and Apache returns a 200 header to the browser. Clearly there is some very basic configuration step I'm not understanding... but what?

• XNA calculate normals for linesegment

  I am quite new to 3D graphical programming and thus far only understand that normal somehow define the direction in which a vertex faces and therefore the direction in which light is reflected. I have now idea how they are calculated though, only that they are defined by a Vector3. For a visualizer that I am creating I am importing a bunch of coordinate which represent layer upon layer of line segments. At the moment I am only using a vertex buffer and adding the start and end point of each line and then rendering a linelist. The thing is now that I need to calculate the normal for the vertices of these line segments so that I can get some realistic lighting. I have no idea how to calculate these normal but I know they all face sideways and not up or down. To calculate them all I have are the start and end positions of each line segment. The below image is a representation of what I think I need to do in the case of an example layer: The red arrows represent the normal that should be calculates, the blue text represent the coordinates of the vertices and the green numbers represent their indices. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me how I should calculate these normal.

  Recently I had to write a DAX formula containing a LASTDATE within the logical condition of a FILTER: I found that its behavior was not the one I expected and I further investigated. • How do I get a chart in LibreOffice Calc to have regular time intervals when the data is not regular?

  I have an area chart in LibreOffice Calc where I would like the X axis to be measured in one month intervals spaced evenly apart. The data going into the graph, however, is not regularly spaced at one month. There can be zero, one, or two entries in any given month. Right now, the chart is keeping the horizontal pacing of the data consistent and adjusting the X axis to accomodate, which is the reverse of what I want. In the example picture below, you can see that there is one data point in March, one in May, and two in June. Along the X axis, April is gone and June is taking up double the space. Instead of this, I'd like the months to stay the same spacing so there is April, May, and June, and for the data area of the chart to compress or extend horiozontally as necessary. I have tried editing the X axis and adjusting the time intervals, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Is what I'm after possible?

• How can I tag sequences inside videos?

  For example, let's say I find a sequence in a WWDC session (Apple videos) that explains a technical point very well. I would like to be able to store the exact range in the video, tag it with keywords, and manage all that information. And when I want to share this information, I could simply export to a plain English sentence: "Have a look at the video named …". It would be great to be able to launch a video player for local videos and go straight to the beginning of the sequence.

The number and location of extension points in each ABCS is dependent upon whether the ABCS is a request-response or fire-and-forget service. However for now we are only discussing the ABCS extension call-outs. To extend an ABCS, you'll first need to identify the specific extension points that are available in your ABCS and choose the one or more that you want to implement. You can an get an idea of the extension points available in your ABCS by looking into the AIAConfigurationProperties.xml file found under the AIA_HOME/config directory. Find the for your ABCS and look for properties similar to the following: false false false false Each extension point in the ABCS will have a corresponding configuration property to control whether or not the extension call-out is active at runtime. So these properties can give you some idea of what extension points are available in your ABCS. However, you'll probably also want to look into the ABCS BPEL code itself to confirm the exact location of the call-out.

• How to stop scheduled chkdisk on windows 7?

  Hi! I have a problem with windows 7 64-bit. I was trying out chkdsk command line options and scheduled a chddsk /r on next start. After that I disassembled the laptop on which I set the chkdsk. After I reassembled it, windows gets normally to the point where it should start the check and then hangs when the countdown reaches 1 second. During the countdown, it doesn't detect any input from keyboard. At first I thought that I didn't correctly install the keyboard, but under GNU/Linux, everything is working fine and I can normally mount the windows partition . So is there any way to stop the scheduled chkdsk? I really don't feel like reinstalling windows again because I just finished setting up my tool-chain the way I like it and compiled about 6GiB worth of dependencies I need for some project I'm working on.

• Is it possible to transfer a domain without a "gap" in Whois privacy protection?

  I currently own several domains on which I am using a Whois privacy protection service to hide my personal details. In the near future, I would like to transfer some of these domains to a different registrar. It has been many years since I last performed domain transfers, so I am no longer knowledgeable about what it involves. However, I have read from several registrars that they ask their customers to disable Whois protection before effecting a domain transfer. Since there are several websites out there that publish archived versions of Whois information (and ask handsome money for the information to be hidden, of course), I would prefer to avoid having such a "gap" in my privacy protection. I figured that these websites would fetch Whois information mainly when a query is effected through their own website. However, I have found out that at least one of these sites had a copy of the Whois information for a new domain up on their site within hours after I registered it, so they must have some other source (of course I used a Google search to find that out, not their own site). What that tells me is that the time it takes for the domain transfers to go through would be more than enough for these rogue websites to cache my information. If my new registrar offers privacy protection for domains right from the point of registration as well, is there no way to transfer the domain between the two without reverting to my default Whois information in between?

• Is it safe to delete "Account Unknown" entries from Windows ACLs in a domain environment?

  It's not uncommon to see entries in Windows ACLs (NTFS files/folders, registry, AD objects, etc.) with the name "Account Unknown (SID)". Obviously these are because of old AD users or groups which at some point had permissions manually configured on the relevant object and have since been deleted. Does anyone know if it is safe to remove these "Account Unknown" ACEs? My gut feeling is that it should be just fine, but I'm wondering if anyone has any past experiences where doing this has caused trouble? Normally I just ignore these, but the company I'm working at now seems to have an abnormal number of these, most likely due to past admins' inexperience with AD/Windows and assigning permissions to user accounts rather than groups in all sorts of weird places. FWIW, our environment is not complex, a single domain forest, 4 DCs in 3 sites, with all network connectivity and replication healthy, so I'm certain that these "Account Unknown" entries are really old accounts, and not just because of some failure to resolve the SID to a human-readable name.

• How to prevent multiple playing sounds from destroying your hearing?

  The problem is that when I play 100 sounds almost at same time, all I hear is noise. It's not very attractive to listen it for 30 minutes straight. I tried to fix this by allowing only 1 sound of each sound type to be played at once. But it still sounds really ugly; eventually my brain keeps hearing only the very end of the shot sounds (or the start of it?), and that gets on my nerves really quickly. Eventually I would just decide to turn off the sounds completely. So is there any point of using sounds in a game like this at all? How does our dear reality handle this problem? If there is a war out there, how does it sound when hundred of men shoot almost at the same times? Edit: Here is how the game sounds currently; there isn't even 100 sounds playing at once, maybe 20? http://www.speedyshare.com/VTBDw/headache.mp3 At the beginning it sounds OK, but then it becomes unbearable! In that audio clip there is allowed only 1 sound to be played at once, so it will stop the previous playing sound when new sound is played. • apt-get doesnt download files from NFS location

  I have switched to unix from last 3 months and trying to understand install process and in particular apt-get. I am able to successfully install and download the packages when I configure my repository on http location in /etc/apt/sources.list file. e.g. deb http://web.myspqce.com/u/eng/rose/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free This command will download(/var/cache/apt/archive) and install the package when i use apt-get install When I change the source location to file instead of http(nfs mount point), the package is getting installed but NOT getting downloaded in /var/cache/apt/archive. deb file:/deb_repository/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free Please let me know if there is any configuration or settings that i have to make to let apt-get to both download and install package when i use (nfs)file:/ instead of http:/ in sources.list. To achieve this, I can use apt-get --downlaod-only and then use apt-get install for both download and install in two separate calls, but I want to know why package is not getting downloaded with apt-get install but only getting installed when used with file:/ in sources.list

  I am working in a private bank, a leading mid size bank in local market. We are going to create our core banking solution. Existing solution has been developed on Java using IBM Visual Age 4.0. It is very important to discuss architecture first, we have currently more than 350 branches working in standalone mode, and it means they are working in self contained environment. They have their own database server (IBM DB2 9.7) and they are communicating with other branches via sockets to send and receive data. Having experience of .NET for more than 5 years I am trying to convince my superiors to choose .NET platform, but they are reluctant and unwilling. It is my job to encourage them for choosing best available platform to create large scale enterprise application. In simple word, we are going to create a very large scale enterprise financial application, a centralize and integrated which connects all branch networks plus having scalable, solid architecture that easily evolve over time. I want professional people to comment on above scenarios. Which platform to choose .NET or Java? Our all resource is currently working in Java, we have homogeneous environment (no Linux, no Mac and no UNIX).
