• Using IIS Logs for Performance Testing with Visual Studio

  In this blog post I’ll show you how you can play back the IIS Logs in Visual Studio to automatically generate the web performance tests. You can also download the sample solution I am demo-ing in the blog post. Introduction Performance testing is as important for new websites as it is for evolving websites. If you already have your website running in production you could mine the information available in IIS logs to analyse the dense zones (most used pages) and performance test those pages rather than wasting time testing & tuning the least used pages in your application. What are IIS Logs To help with server use and analysis, IIS is integrated with several types of log files. These log file formats provide information on a range of websites and specific statistics, including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, user information and site visits as well as dates, times and queries. If you are using IIS 7 and above you will find the log files in the following directory C:\Interpub\Logs\ Walkthrough 1. Download and Install Log Parser from the Microsoft download Centre. You should see the LogParser.dll in the install folder, the default install location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Log Parser 2.2. LogParser.dll gives us a library to query the iis log files programmatically. By the way if you haven’t used Log Parser in the past, it is a is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory. More details… 2. Create a new test project in Visual Studio. Let’s call it IISLogsToWebPerfTestDemo.   3.  Delete the UnitTest1.cs class that gets created by default. Right click the solution and add a project of type class library, name it, IISLogsToWebPerfTestEngine. Delete the default class Program.cs that gets created with the project. 4. Under the IISLogsToWebPerfTestEngine project add a reference to Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.WebTestFramework – c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.WebTestFramework.dll LogParser also called MSUtil - c:\users\tarora\documents\visual studio 2010\Projects\IisLogsToWebPerfTest\IisLogsToWebPerfTestEngine\obj\Debug\Interop.MSUtil.dll 5.   I install ILMerge.exe; path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft\ILMerge\ILMerge.exe. I want to set the command to the Path so I can type ilmerge anywhere to use the application.   I am trying to make a backup to an external HD using Robocopy. I am wondering why it makes the destination directory hidden and subsequently why I can't unhide it? Note: I'm new to the Windows command line. This is the first command I have ever passed. The command I used is: Robocopy D:\ I:\destination-directory /E /R:0 /DCOPY:T The backup worked fine, but it made the destination directory hidden. Then I tried to unhide the directory with the following command: ATTRIB -H "I:\destination-directory" /S /D and the output is: Not resetting system file -- I:\destination-directory So, Why does this Robocopy command hide the destination directory? What can I do to unhide this directory? I would like to use the command line to do this.

• How can I print a batch of files with custom printer settings?

  I have a collection of A3-size (tabloid size) PDF drawings which I would like to print as a batch. The particular printer I am using doesn't automatically check the paper size of the document - it always defaults to A4 (letter) size paper unless told otherwise. I need to go into the printer settings and tell the printer to use A3 size paper. A batch printing utility like DarkStorm's Batch Print Handler would be good for this. However this particular utility doesn't support changing the paper size settings or other printer settings. How can I go about batch printing these PDFs with a particular paper size?

• SQL Server 2005 to 2008 upgrade - are MDF files binary compatible?

  I have 50 databases on a MS SQL Server 2005 system and want to upgrade to MS SQL Server 2008. This is what I tried on some test machines: 1. copied the \DATA directory from the source (MSSQL 2005) to exactly the same path on the target (MSSQL 2008) server. 2. edited the startup parameters on the MSSQL 2008 service to point to the path of the MSSQL 2005 master database. 3. restarted MSSQL service It worked and I can access all databases, tables and data. My questions are: I go back to SQL Server 4.2 and it has never been this easy. I know it worked, but should have it worked? Am I missing something, or is there going to be a gotcha next week? These are simple databases, with just tables, views and indexes. No cross database links, no triggers etc

I have then added a virtual host to the J2EE server, i.e. Resin: <host host-name="railo"> C:/resin/webapps/railo In the Railo Admin i have added this mapping: Virtual Physical / C:/webapps/ When i access http://railo:8080/ my index.cfm welcome file in C:/webapps/ is loaded (index.cfm is definded in Railos web.xml). When i try to access http://railo:8080/test which contains the same index.cfm i get an 500 Servlet Exception java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\webapps\test (access denied) (on all J2EE Servers i tried so far). http://railo:8080/test/index.cfm works fine. I already tried to add index.cfm to Resins welcome-file-list in app-default.xml to no avail. I want to be able to access deployed apps without this url: http://localhost:8080/app/ Instead i want to use this: http://app:8080/

• How can I get Thunderbird to automatically move messages?

  I have Thunderbird 15. I'd like to automatically move messages from one folder to another. My mail account is an IMAP account. My Blackberry is also connected to the account and when it sends mail, it places a copy on the IMAP server in a folder named Sent Items. I'd like those messages to be moved to my Inbox automatically. By default message filters are only applied automatically to the Inbox. There is an extension to do this, Filter Subfolders, but it's only for TB3. What I have tried so far is: Use the FiltaQuilla add-on to be able to filter messages for folder name. Set the string property mail.server.default.applyIncomingFilters to true. As recommended here: http://blog.mozilla.org/bcrowder/ But I can't get these filters to run automatically. I have a suspicion that filters only run automatically for incoming mail. And these are sent items. Perhaps that's it. I just don't know. On the other hand, if I run the filters manually on that folder, it does indeed move the mail. Or perhaps the issue is that these messages are saved into the Sent Items folder marked as read. Is it possible that filters are only automatically applied to unread items? If I could install an add-in that automatically ran the message filter on my folder, that would do it. Anyway, I'm at a loss now. Any suggestions are welcome. I'm not at all wedded to using filters. I just want to find a way to get these messages moved without human interaction!

• How can I get MySQL 5.5 to log warnings to one of the log files?

  I have found various things that say that you can log warnings to the MySQL error log, but I have not been able to actually make it happen. I do have the error log working, and MySQL prints stuff to it on startup and shutdown and occasionally at other times, but if I e.g. SELECT CAST('123' AS DATE); and then SHOW WARNINGS; I can see the warning, but it does not show up in any logs. I've also tried enabling the general log and the slow query log, but these don't show the warnings either. I've tried with log_warnings = 1 and log_warnings = 2, but still no warnings are logged. If I type: HOME_DIR=~george echo $HOME_DIR It gives me: /a/path/to/georges_home However, if I try to use a variable, it does not work: USERNAME="george" cd ~$USERNAME -bash: cd: ~george: No such file or directory I've tried using quotes and backticks, but can't figure out how to make it expand properly. How do I make this work?

  vsftpd on ubuntu after sudo apt-get install vsftpd Then did configuration as in the attached /etc/vsftpd.conf file. Anonymous ftp allows cd to the upload directly and allows put myfile.txt which gets created on the server but then the client hangs and never proceeds. The file on the server remains at 0 bytes.   I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd-vhosts.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle? Update: I tried to simplify things a little, so I reinstalled XAMPP and got back to a working http://localhost. Then I confirmed that httpd-vhosts.conf is included in httpd.conf and made the following changes to httpd-vhosts.conf: Uncommented the line NameVirtualHost *:80 Added a virtual host shown below. Restarted Apache and saw the expected page on http://localhost <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/htdocs/" ServerName localhost ErrorLog "logs/dummy-host2.localhost-error.log" CustomLog "logs/dummy-host2.localhost-access.log" combined </VirtualHost> I then created a new folder named C:\testweb, added an index.html file and changed the DocumentRoot line shown above. For all intents and purposes I would then expect the two configurations to be equivalent. But this setup gives me an error 403. Even though the C:\testweb folder already had the same permissions as the C:\xampp\htdocs folder, I then went further and gave the Everyone group full control of C:\testweb and got exactly the same problem. So what did I miss?

• Completely remove user account and create another with same name in Windows 7

  Here's my question simply and then the details in case they help to get me an appropriate answer. Question: How can I completely and permanently delete a user account in Windows 7 so that I can create another one with the same user name without the computer name extension added, eg Jane Smith not Jane Smith.computer name? The details: I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. (My laptop crashed, I reinstalled Vista and restored backup files but things weren't working so I decided to just get Windows 7 since I had to start over anyway). I used Windows Easy Transfer to save just about everything, even customizing to include a user's appdata from Windows.old which was created when I reinstalled Vista -- not knowing that another windows.old file would be created with the installation of Windows 7. After installing Windows 7, I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer the user file, appdata, to the new user account which I gave the same name (Jane Smith) in case having a different name would cause problems with reading files or something. Afterwards, I realized that I did not want ALL of that junk. So, I thought no problem, I'll just delete the user account I just created, nothing lost, and create another one this time transferring only the files I wanted (using the customize option in windows easy transfer). I wanted to keep the same user name, e.g. Jane Smith, so after I deleted the user account I checked the files, and I didn't see. It was late so I went to bed and the next morning I created a new user with that same name (Jane Smith). The files looked fine if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, I updated the computer and it restarted a couple times. As I was moving files to the "Jane Smith" user account file, things weren't working as they should. I was actually moving files to the deleted user account and that the current user account was named "Jane Smith.computer name" and that's where the files needed to go. I don't like this. It's too confusing. I want just "Jane Smith". How can I do this without just changing the user name (which doesn't change it in the file path etc)? I want the first one GONE. If I can't do this, is it a problem to create an account with another name and still transfer files to it without path or other problems? I hope this question makes sense and that someone can help me. Thank you in advance!

• "The Operation Failed." accepting METHOD: PUBLISH iCalendar files in .pst account

  if I create a new Mail Profile using the Internet E-mail wizard, ie, creating a new local .pst account, and then try to add a .ics iCalendar file with a METHOD of PUBLISH to the calendar of that account, I get the error "The Operation Failed." If I change any of the above it works ok, eg, if I use an Exchange account or METHOD: REQUEST in the iCalendar file. I'm using Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 but I think the user that originally reported this was using Outlook 2007. Does anyone have any idea of why this might be? Thanks, Jamie Kitson

• How to unlock files using handle.exe and process name?

  I tried Unlocker 1.9.1 but it doesn't work correctly for me on Windows7 (worked ok on Windows XP) and also I tried LockHunter 2.0.2.103 x64 and reported a bug but .... LockHunter actually unlocks the file from GUI but not from command line. So I want to use handle.exe by SysInternals to unlock one file "TestPro.log". I know the absolut path if it helps. I can list and all processes that locked the file by executing C:\Windows\system32>c:\edutester\progs\handle testpro.log java.exe pid: 2120 type: File 338: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log java.exe pid: 1004 type: File 934: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log What I need to know how to unlock the file using above info from command line automatically. • How can ICS in Windows 7 be managed via command line, scripts, config files, etc.?

  I've been using ICS successfully for years, but now I'm looking for a way to control it through something else than the GUI in Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections - Connection Properties: I want to do everything that the encircled checkbox does, without touching the GUI. But what does the checkbox do? Microsoft don't provide specific information and the most helpful forum post I've found is from 2003. Assuming that some of the advice is still valid, I've come to the conclusion that ICS is broken down into 6 parts that have to be set up individually: the sharedAccess service interface settings firewall rules a static route dnsproxy autodhcp I've already learned that the service can be started/stopped with the command net start/stop sharedAccess and that netsh is a good tool for changing the interface settings and the firewall rules. But I don't understand how ICS handles routing and DNS. All hosts in my network are configured statically, so I don't care much about autodhcp. Thanks for your help! EDIT: I've spent the whole day scanning through ProcMon and I've seen reads/writes to both the registry and the filesystem and it is difficult to determine what parts of it actually make ICS work. I'm trying to look for an API instead. I'm looking into this right now, but I still want to know more about the inner workings.

  As the title says, I'm trying to find how to run adb commands through a pre-written script (such as how .bat and .vbs files work) so I can make a semi automatic program to pull some files from my android phone whenever I click on the launch.bat which launches a line of program to go through the phone and find certain files. I know the script line: adb pull /data/data/kik.android/databases/ %drive%\All\Database This copies all the files in this specific database into the flash drive's folder "Database" under the "All" folder. But, how could i make it so that the adb program looks through the phone and finds other files, and how could i pull the specific files, rather than pulling the entire folder?

• Permissions won't cascade more than 1 level

  Running Windows Small Business Server 2011 I have a file structure with a lot of sub folders (sometimes 5-6 levels deep). I have created access groups to grant access to my users, and also deny groups to deny access to others. X Access & X Deny. These allow or deny access to a mapped network drive X: On the server I put in the groups with Full Control Allow for X Access and Full Control Deny for X Deny, I also tick the box "Apple these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only" and have ensured that "Apply to:" is "This folder, subfolders and files". But for some reason the permissions will only apply to the next level of folders & files. ex. structure: X: Folder 1 Folder 1a Folder 2 Folder 2a If I apply the permissions to X: it'll only go to Folder 1 & 2, not 1a and 2a, I then need to manually apply the permissions to these too. Is this working as intended or am I doing something wrong?

• How to efficiently merge a lot of vCard files for the same person?

  I currently have contact information at several places: old PDA's address book mobile phone's phone book (primarily name, phone number) email client's address book (primarily name, email) web mailer's address book (primarily name, email) instant messenger's contact list (primarily name, im, email, birthday) And there are several social or business networking sites on the Internet where contacts provide information about themselves, like LinkedIn or XING. All those sources can export as vCard, but as you might imagine, I get a lot of vCards for the very same contact that way. Are there any tools where I can import them and then merge them (it may ask me which phone number is more current in case of field clashes of course)? Bonus points if it can track which information I have discarded so when I re-export all information from one of the sources I can't import to (networking sites), it won't ask me again if I want to overwrite phone number of person X with the same ancient number... I hope you understand what I try to accomplish, if not just ask :-)
