• How to completely remove a package that didn't install properly?

  I recently installed a package from a ppa on Ubuntu 12.04 beta, but apparently it didn't work out, and now it is giving me errors at every update or install I make, even after deactivating the ppa from my sources. • Guaranteed Restore Points as Fallback Method

  Thanks to the great audience yesterday in the Upgrade & Migration Workshop in Utrecht. That was really fun and I was amazed by our new facilities (and the  "wellness" lights surrounding the plenum room's walls). And another reason why I like to do these workshops is that often I learn new things from you So credits here to Rick van  Ek who has highlighted the following topic to me. Yesterday (and in some previous workshops) I did mention during the discussion about Fallback Strategies that you'll have to switch on Flashback Database beforehand to create a guaranteed restore point in case you'll encounter an issue during the database upgrade. I knew that we've made it possible since Oracle Database 11.2 to switch Flashback Database on without taking the database into MOUNT status (you could switch it off anyway while the database is open before in all releases). But before Oracle Database 11.2 that did require MOUNT status. SQL> create restore point rp1 guarantee flashback database ; create restore point rp1 guarantee flashback database * ERROR at line 1: ORA-38784: Cannot create restore point 'RP1'. ORA-38787: Creating the first guaranteed restore point requires mount mode when flashback database is off. But Rick did mention that I won't need to switch Flashback Database On to create a guaranteed restore point. And he's right - in older releases I would have had to go into MOUNT state to define the restore point which meant to restart the database. But in 11.2 that's no necessary anymore. And the same will apply when you upgrade your pre-11.2 database (e.g. an Oracle Database 10.2.0.4) to Oracle Database 11.2. As soon as you start your "old" not-yet-upgraded database in your 11.2 environment with STARTUP UPGRADE you can define a guaranteed restore point. If you tail the alert.log you'll see that the database will start the RVWR (Recovery Writer) background process - you'll just have to make sure that you'd define the values for db_recovery_file_dest_size and db_recovery_file_dest. SQL> startup upgrade ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area  417546240 bytes Fixed Size                  2228944 bytes Variable Size             134221104 bytes Database Buffers          272629760 bytes Redo Buffers                8466432 bytes Database mounted. Database opened. Can ECM distribute contents to 3rd party sites?ECM, which is now called WebCenter Content can distribute content to 3rd party sites via several means as well as SSXA - Site Studio for External Applications. Will you be able to provide more information on these means and SSXA?If you have an existing JSP application, you can add the SSXA libraries to your IDE where your application was built (JDeveloper for example).  You can now drop some code into your 3rd party site/application that can both create and pull dynamically contributable content out of the Content Server for inclusion in your pages.   If the 3rd party site is not a JSP application, there is also the option of leveraging two Site Studio (not SSXA) specific custom WebCenter Content services to pull Site Studio XML content into a page. However if WebCenter Sites was able to identify and segment the customers  to a specific category where the customer is a potential target for some promotions, the same promotions should be targeted to the customer when he is in the self-service site, which is managed by WebCenter Portal. The context transfer can be achieved by calling out the WebCenter Sites Engage Server API’s, which will identify the segment that the customer has been bucketed into. Again through REST API’s., WebCenter Portal can then request WebCenter Sites for specific content that needs to be targeted for a customer for the identified segment. While this integration can be achieved through custom integration today, Oracle is looking into productizing this integration in future releases.  How can context be transferred from WebCenter Sites (marketing site) to WebCenter Portal (Online services)?WebCenter Portal Personalization server can call into WebCenter Sites Engage Server to identify the segment for the user and then through REST API’s request specific content that needs to be surfaced in the Portal. • How to add another OS entry in Wubi grub

  I am trying to install another linux distro besides ubuntu. However, I want to retain my existing windows based loader. Currently, as per my knowledge, MsDos loads grub which then loads Ubuntu (with loop back trick). Now, I have a new linux distro installed on /dev/sda8 (/boot for new distro) where as /root for that OS is installed on /dev/sda9. I tried following steps 1. Add entry into 40_custom of ubuntu grub 2. update grub But upon booting via that entry, it is not able to load the new OS and shows me blank screen. What could be the problem?   I am a .net background person with most of the work with Windows environment and IIS etc. I have been given a task to deploy one php application on RedHat Linux box. All I have is the credentials and the server IP of that box. Can someone help about how to get started creating a new website on Apache 2.0 on redhat box and then putting php code over to that. I do not have physical access to that server as well. I know it's very basis question, but I am in dark for these things. Even if you can point me to some documentation that's fine or else at least the analogy with IIS should also help to certain extent.

• Strategies for porting application from Win32 API to GTK+

  I have a legacy application written in C, using the raw Win32 API. The general level of abstraction is low and raw dependency on <windows.h> is common. I would like to port this application to GTK+. There are any kind of guidelines or best practices on how to do this? I've previously ported a MFC application to Qt, but the application was very abstracted - it draw it's own set of widgets, for example - and initial porting was very straightforward. I've been thinking at first using Wine to build a native Linux executable and then trying to slowly refactor it into a GTK+ app. Does some one have best practices or previous experiences to share about this?

  Several days ago I heard a sentence "Cracking company name routers are not a crime.". I asked "Why?" and the guy explained to me that company name used a linux distribution on their routers which source can not be closed because of their license but company name closed it. What do you think about this? Doing otherwise unethical "cracking" becomes ethical, or somewhat neutral if the software in question is "cracked" too? By "cracking" I don't mean breaking into a computer through someones' company name router but "cracking" my own router's OS which otherwise would be unethical.

• How can I install the Play! framework using typesafe-stack? [migrated]

  I'd like to create a new project with the Play! framework. My system is Mint 12 64bit. Since the newest version of Play! is already bundled with the typesafe-stack, I thought installation would be easy. I added the typesafe repo, then I apt-get updated and apt-get installed typesafe-stack with the command g8 typesafehub/play-scala. I successfully created a new project in my home folder. Now the problems begin: I don't know how to access Play! with this installation. After creating the project, I tried to convert it into an Eclipse project, it but there's no play command available in the terminal. How can I get a "standard" Play! installation on Linux? What happens to the tools bundled in the typesafe stack - Where do they go?

• HW resources for the device driver [closed]

  Need to provide memory and IRQ resources to the Linux kernel in order to bring up the CAN controller. Have no idea how to get them. Below is the structure I need to fill in. This structure I have taken for example, this is for the Run-Time Clock, but I need for CAN controller. Both are on the same board, and there are constants for RT Clock (and all other devices), but not for my CAN chip. • Need to setup and access web disk for a hosting account

  I am on linux(ubuntu 12.04) and have purchased a hosting space. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured. Please let me know, how to configure this? How to allow the given port access?

  Per the Linux kernel coding style document: The answer to that is that if you need more than 3 levels of indentation, you're screwed anyway, and should fix your program. What can I deduct from this quote? On top of the fact that too long methods are hard to maintain, are they hard or impossible to optimize for the compiler? I don't really understand if this quote encourages better coding practice or is really a mathematical / algorithmic sort of truth. I also read in some C++ optimizing guide that dividing up a program into more function improves its design is a common thing taught at school, but it should be not done too much, since it can turn into a lot of JMP calls (even if the compiler can inline some methods by itself).

• Recomendation for Webshop with API

  I'm searching for a webshop. The problem with my search is, that the webshop-software of my choice needs to have a useabel API or some interface for external applications. E.g. i need to place orders by an external application or need to get product descriptions or warehouse stock from the external application. I somehow would like to have a webshop wehere the webinterface is just one way to interact with the whole system. There are some other requirments, which have to be fullfilled, but i guess they are kind of common: running on linux MySQL (we already have MySQL-replication and backup in place) i like open source but i'm willing to pay for it, if it's worth it I found some webshops on the net - but perhaps you can tell me, if theres any hope for a webshop with a good API before i go and test all of them, on the first look i didn't find any docs about any interface to external applications for any of my search results.   I want to test websites for JavaScript malware presence . I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ? If I use telnet client library to communicate with the VM: must I implement a server within the VM to deal with my queries or can I overcome this ? I am jut looing for hints, general ideas.   I just got Ubuntu and I am really really really a linux novice. I can't get the wireless to work? I played around with it until I saw it says "wireless firmware missing" - Hardware address 00:14:A5:6A:17:C2. On my laptop there is a button that looks like a little antenae that means the wireless is on. The funny thing is that this button does not seem to do anything right now - the light is not lit up and does not light up. Any thoughts you have on getting this going are appreciated!
