  I have got two tables in Sql Server 2005: USER Table: information about user and so on. COUNTRY Table : Holds list of whole countries on the world. USER_COUNTRY Table: Which matches, which user has visited which county. It holds, UserID and CountryID. For example, USER_COUNTRY table looks like this: ID -- UserID -- CountryID 1 -- 1 -- 34 2 -- 1 -- 5 3 -- 2 -- 17 4 -- 2 -- 12 5 -- 2 -- 21 6 -- 3 -- 19 My question is that: When a user is deleted in USER table, how can I make associated records in USER_COUNTRY table deleted directly. Maybe, by using Foreign Key Constaint?

• Make a usable Join relationship with LINQ on top of a database CSV design error

  I'm looking for a way to fix and/or abstract away a comma-separated values (CSV) list in a database field in order to reconstruct a usable relationship such that I can properly join the two tables below and query them using LINQ and its Join method. Following is a sample showing the Person table and CsvArticleIds field having a CSV value to represent a one-to-many association with Article records. TABLE [dbo].[Person] Id Name CsvArticleIds -- ---------- -------- 1 Joe "15,22" 5 Ed "22" 10 Arnie "8,15,22" ^^^(Of course a link table should have been created; nonetheless the relationship with articles is trapped inside that list of CSV values.) • Is it possible to raise an error if a variable assignment in a select returns multiple values?

  I just found a bug on one of my softwares where I had forgotten a where clause. The code was something like that : declare @foo bigint declare @bar bigint select @foo = foo, @bar=bar from tbFooBar where (....a long list of condition goes there) (... and an extra condition should have went there but I forgot it) Unfortunately, the where clause I forgot was useful in very specific corner cases and the code went through testing successfully. Eventually, the query returned two values instead of one, and the resulting bug was a nightmare to track down (as it was very difficult to reproduce, and it wasn't obvious at all that this specific stored procedure was causing the issue we spotted) Debugging would have been a lot easier if the @foo=foo had raised an exception instead of silently assigning the first value out of multiple rows. Why is that this way? I can't think of a situation where one would actually want to do that without raising an error (bearing in mind the clauses 'distinct' and 'top' are there for a reason) And is there a way to make sql server 2008 raise an error if this situation occurs ?

  Hi, i always thought that the sql transaction log keeps track of all the transactions done in the database so it could help recovering the database file in case of a unexpected power down or something like that So then, in normal usage, when the data is committed and written to disk, it is cleared because all the data is nice and safe in the mdf file. Seeing the ldf file grow and reading some i understand that that is not the case, and it will keep growing, until: you shrink the log. Only at that point all the commited transactions are cleared and the log file is shrinked. I found some sp's who should do this, but also found the theory that you first have to backup the database? That last step doesn't make sense to me, so can anyone tell me of that is correct and if so, why that is?

  I've got some data in the following format: -1,-1,-1,-1,701,-1,-1,-1,-1,-1,304,390,403,435,438,439,442,455 I need to insert it into a temp table like this: CREATE TABLE #TEMP ( Node int ) So that I can use it in a comparison with data in another table. The data above represents separate rows of the "Node" column. Is there an easy way to insert this data, all in one command? Also, the data will actually being coming in as seen, as a string... so I need to be able to just concat it into the SQL query string. I can obviously modify it first if needed.

  Hi, One of the azure training kit presentation says: Each account has zero or more logical servers Provisioned via a common portal Establishes a billing instrument Each logical server has one or more databases Contains metadata about database & usage Unit of authentication, geo-location, billing, reporting Generated DNS-based name Each database has standard SQL objects Users, Tables, Views, Indices, etc Unit of consistency So now I'm lost :D. Were not the databases themselves the units of billing? I mean, I thought that servers were just like logical containers and you were charged per number and size of databases. How servers are billed?   I am trying to import data from ~ Delimited Text file into SQL Server using CSLA. My text file has 92,000 records in it. Here are the issues i am having with the import When i create a BusinnessListBase .new and add all my records to it, it gives me a "Out of meory exception". So to fix it i create a new bussinessbase object and save it. this works fine and is much faster too. It takes 15 minutes I have to run my program again and check for any changes and hence update them, this is where it takes too much time. Is there any alternative way to speed up my import?

  I've recently enabled CLR on my 64 bit SQL Server 2005 machine for usage of about 3 procs. When I run the following query to gather some info on memory usage... select single_pages_kb+ multi_pages_kb + virtual_memory_committed_kb as TotalMemoryUsage, virtual_memory_reserved_kb from sys.dm_os_memory_clerks where type = 'MEMORYCLERK_SQLCLR' I get 129 mb MemoryUsage and 6.3 gb Virtual Memory Reserved The total memory of the machine is 21 gig. What does reserved virtual memory mean exactly and how can I control the size that is allocated? 6 gig is overkill for what we're doing and the memory would be much better utilized by the sproc cache. I'm concerned this reserved memory will cause swapping to the page file. Please help me take back control of the memory! Thanks

  I'm calling a stored function like this: select XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823') from dual; The query results then show up in a table underneath, which I can right click and select "Export Date" - XML <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF8' ?> <RESULTS> <ROW> <COLUMN NAME="XML_INVOICE.GENERATE_XML_DOC('84200006823')" <![CDATA[<xml>yada yada</xml><morexml>...]]></COLUMN> </ROW> </RESULTS> The problem is the "..." - SQL Developer (2.1.0.63 on Linux) is not showing all the data - its truncating the result and appending the ellipsis. This is of no use to me. How do I get it to export ALL of my data?

  I have a legacy FoxPro application which stores documents in an SQL table in a field with the image datatype. FoxPro accesses the image datatype as a "General" field which can be used to store various files. I have a FoxPro control which interfaces with the General field for modifying/viewing the document that was stored. I need to migrate this control to .NET and make it easy for users to view/modify documents of various types. Does anyone have any suggestions on some ways to go about this or know of things that I'll need to consider for the migration to .NET? I'm pretty sure that I'll need to migrate the field to either a varbinary(max) or FileStream data type.

• How do you access the value of an SQL count () query in a Java program

  I want to get to the value I am finding using the COUNT command of SQL. Normally I enter the column name I want to access into the getInt() getString() method, what do I do in this case when there is no specific column name. I have used 'AS' in the same manner as is used to alias a table, I am not sure if this is going to work, I would think not. • Doctrine SQL Server uniqueidentifier isn't cast as char or nvarchar when retrieved from the database

  When I retrieve a record from the database which has a column of type "uniqueidentifier", Doctrine fills it with "null" rather than the unique id from the database. Some research and testing has brought this down to a PDO/dblib driver issue. When directly querying via PDO, null is returned in place of the unique id. For reference, http://trac.doctrine-project.org/ticket/1096, has a bit on this, however, it was updated 11 months ago with no comment for resolution. A way around this, as mentioned at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=24752&edit=1, is to cast the column as a char. However, it doesn't seem Doctrine exposes the native field type outside of generating models which makes it a bit hard to detect uniqueidentifier types and cast them internally when building the sql query. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

  I need to run a Select statement (DB2 SQL) that does not pull adjacent row duplicates based on a certain field. In specific, I am trying to find out when data changes, which is made difficult because it might change back to its original value. That is to say, I have a table that vaguely resembles: A, 5, Jan A, 12, Feb A, 12, Mar A, 12, Apr A, 9, May A, 9, Jun A, 5, Jul And I want to get the results: A, 5, Jan A, 12, Feb A, 9, May A, 5, Jul discarding adjacent duplicates but keeping the last row. The obvious: Select Letter, Number, Min(Month) from Table group by Letter, Number does not work -- it doesn't include the last row.

  Hi I want to conduct search on a particular column of a table in such a way that returning result set should satify following 2 conditions: Returning result set should have records whose 90% of the characters matches with the given search text. Returning result set should have records whose 70% of the consecutive characters matches with the given search text. It implies that when 10 character word Sukhminder is searched, then: it should return records like Sukhmindes, ukhminder, Sukhmindzr, because it fulfils both of the above mentioned conditions. But it should not return records like Sukhmixder because it does not fulfil the second condition. Likewise, It should not return record Sukhminzzz because it does not fulfil the first condition. I am trying to use Full Text Search feature of SQL Server. But, could not formulate the required query yet. Kindly reply ASAP.

I have seen people suggest webhost4life.com, hostmysite.com and others but they do not offer windows server 2008 hosting, only 2003. I have also looked at mosso and aspnix.com.   I'm needing to select first and last name in a table which is working fine in the following SQL, but the part that isn't working is the NVL function. The file should show all pilots at a company that fly helicopters and IF they don't have a licence the field HT_NAME should come up as 'N/A' and the field for end hours flown should be 0. I've put NVL function in as my text details but it still isn't working. Have i made a syntax error? Help would be appreciated.   Hello all, I am using ASP MVC and SQL Server and I have a database that is updated intermittently with expected wait times for some event. Also, I am using some ajax and jquery. I need to display the average and maximum wait times. How can I take the entire list of time from the server and get the average time? Also, what would be the best method to simply grab a new time from the server when it is updated without having to pull the whole list again? Thanks!

  Hello, I am new to using the geography types in SQL Server 2008. I have a table in my database called "Location". "Location" has the following columns and types: Location -------- City nvarchar(256) State nvarchar(256) PostalCode nvarchar(25) Latitude decimal(9, 6) Longitude decimal(9, 6) Each Location is related to a Store record in my database. I am trying to find the stores within a 10 mile radius or postal code or city/state that a user enters. To accomplish this, I know that I need to rely on geographies. At this time I have: DECLARE @startingPoint geography; SET @startingPoint=geography::STGeomFromText('POINT(-122.34900 47.65100)', 4326); That gives me the starting point from a hard-coded textual value. However, I do not know how to convert a lat/long from my Location table into a geography instance. How do I convert a lat/long in my database to a geography instance so I can continue to work on my query? Thank you!
