• Can't install Ubuntu in a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought an HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop... I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu... When I insert the live CD, it shows the ubuntu start screen and then everything goes black (no cursor... Just like the screen is switched off (but the system is working)) When i try to install from the USB, it says Live media is not found! Some times it also give a black screen like the CD... Have any idea how to fix this? Thanks

• Mapped network drive missing from My Computer and Explorer

  On a Windows XP Pro SP3 machine one network drive refuses to show up in My Computer or Explorer. The missing drive letter is G:, if that matters. Other mappings work fine. Other profiles one the same machine have no problem mapping G:. I can access the G: just fine typing it into the address bar or in CMD shell. I've used TweakUI to toggle hide/show G: with no difference. TweakUI says G: should be visible. I've logged off,on between toggles to make sure the settings are taking effect. I've looked at reg key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] and made sure it's zero'd. [insert ref link here] We've limped along with this broken setup for some time, just working around it, but some applications do not allow typing in a path when choosing a place to save files and it's reached the point where it's intolerable. So, anyone have any idea why XP won't show this drive letter? or how to fix it?

• Cheap Solution for Routing a Toll Free Number to a Standard POTS Number

  I do some technical work for an Internet Radio Show/Podcast, and need to fix something that has been broken for a while. The hosts have a Skype-In number to take listener calls, and for convenience sake, I bought and paid for a toll free number for a period of time. I used to use Asterlink for routing calls, but they folded and sent my number to OneBox, but they're ridiculously expensive by comparison. I'm looking for a cheap solution for this one simple task. Forward toll free calls to a skype-in number. The definition of cheap is as cheap or cheaper than Asterlink was. I paid something like $2 a month, and then the termination/call rate, which was a fraction of a sent for termination, and only whole cents after some serious time on the call. A $20 preload lasted me months at a time. I don't want to be upsold too, I want a simple web based management screen (CDR/stats are fun!), and obviously, it needs to be reliable. What vendors out there are you a fan of that solves this need?

  I am trying to make my first app for sale, I would like to ask some questions for those who have already sold their software: Have you used a Framework/Lib whose LGPL License? if yes, what are the impressions of your customers? for example, if your customers/ competitors from the market reveal technology/secrets that you used in your solution (as LGPL requires that you make a Dynamic Link (.DLL) for your libs and you clearly tell the use of a Lib/Framework ...). Full story: For my project, I used a framework LGPL/commercial (Dual License) the second one it was too expensive (about 3000 USD) which pushed me to use LGPL.. however I still concerned.. • I would like to edit the layout of my keyboard just a bit - what's the best way?

  I'm using an Apple keyboard which has some annoyances compared to other keyboards. Namely, the Alt_L and Super_L keys are swapped, and the bar and less keys are swapped ("|" and "<"). I've written an Xmodmap file to swap the keys back: keycode 49 = less greater less greater onehalf threequarters keycode 64 = Super_L NoSymbol Super_L keycode 94 = bar section bar section brokenbar paragraph keycode 108 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R keycode 133 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L keycode 134 = Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R I did this by identifying the keys using xev and the default modmap xmodmap -pke and swapping the keycodes. xev now identifies all my keys as correct, which is awesome! I can also use the correct keys to type the bar and less than symbols. (I followed this answer on askubuntu: http://askubuntu.com/q/24916/52719) But it seems the change isn't very deep. For instance, the Super key is now broken in the Compiz Settings Manager. No shortcuts involving the Super key works (but the Alt key does). Also the settings dialog for Gnome Do doesn't heed the changes in xmodmap, and I can't open the Gnome Do window anymore if I use any of the remapped keys. So to summarize, everything broke. I would like a deeper way of telling Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro for that matter) which keys are which on the keyboard. Is there a way to edit the Keyboard Layout directly? I'm using the Norwegian Bokmål keyboard layout. Does it reside in a file somewhere I could edit? Any comments, previous experiences or relevant stray thoughts would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

• Log shipping on select tables.

  I know I am most likely using incorrect terminology so please correct me if I use the wrong terms so I can search better. We have a very large database at a client's site and we would like to have up to date copies of some of the tables sent across the internet to our servers at our office. We would like to only copy a few of the tables because the bandwidth requirement to do log shipping of the entire database (our current solution) is too high. Also replication directly to our servers is out of the question as our servers are not accessible from the internet and management does not want to do replication (more on that later). One possible Idea we had is to do some form of replication on the tables we need to another database on the same server and do log shipping of that second smaller database but management is concerned that the clients have broken replication (it was between two servers on their internal network however) on us in the past and would like to stay away from it if possible. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If using some form of replication is the only solution, I am not against replication, I just need compelling arguments to convince management to do it. This is to be set up on multiple sites that are running either Sql2005 or Sql2008 we will have both versions on our end to restore the data to so that is not a issue. Thank you.

  One of my goals for next year is to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. As far as I'm aware, it is not too different from Informatics Olympiads in other countries. What would be the best way to study for this? What content should I pay particular attention to while learning in Python? I am currently using the book 'Learn Python the hard way', but are there any other books worthy of a mention? • Legality of copying information from a Wikia? [closed]

  I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game. I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game. According to their site: The text on Wikia sites is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA). I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website? If needed I would not be opposed to pasting the content and providing a source link at the end of each paragraph. Can I paste the content into my site? Thanks for the help!

• Can you shade a specific section of a sprite? If so, how? [Java]

  I have been working on an isometric minecraft-esque game engine for a strategy game I plan on making. As you can see, it really needs some sort of shading. It is difficult to distinguish between separate elevations when the camera is facing away from the slope because everything is the same shade. So my question is: can I shade just a specific section of a sprite? All of those blocks are just sprites, so if I shaded the entire image, it would shade the whole block. I am using LWJGL. If you see a "Not found" message, Ubuntu Software Center is working in the background to update the list of available apps. When I click on a link, the software centre opens and it says There isn’t a software package called “swordandsworcery” in your current software sources. I have waited for about 30 minutes now. I have also executed sudo apt-get update & restarted software centre to no avail. Do I keep waiting?

• How can I install ATI Catalyst Video driver of Ubuntu 12.04.3?

  EDIT My computer is Thinkpad E420 with Intel HD3000 and ATI 6630m. I have reinstalled my Ubuntu12.04.3 yesterday. I had successfully installed Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst Video driver many times about half year ago following these links: How do I get AMD/Intel Hybrid Graphics drivers to work? What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? However, this time I have no luck with installing ATI Catalyst Video driver. I have tried version 13.4, 13.1, 12.8 of ATI Catalyst Video driver. It seemed that 13.4 doesn't support 12.04 any more, following this link , the lowest Ubuntu version supported by ATI 13.4 is 12.10 and for the reset of the ATI drivers, the kernel version and xorg version of Ubuntu 12.04.3 is too high to be supported. So, should I stay on ubuntu 12.04.1 with ATI 12.8, or there is any way to install ATI driver on Ubuntu 12.04.3?

• How to I compile uget from source?

  I've downlaoded uget from its source fourge link. It is a tar.gz file. I have read that i could install a file of this type by extractingits contents and following these steps. ./configure make install But, when I give ./configure checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane - configure error Am i following the steps? What am I missing? I know the easiest way is to do sudo apt-get install uget But i want to know the reason for its failure. Thanks for your help

• How I can fix the "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered"?

  I'm using a GeForce GTX 580, with Windows 7 64-bit. The driver version of the GTX is 301.42. The problem happens after a few minutes, when I'm playing specifc games. It won't happen in all games - And I don't have any idea why these games doesn't work. The games that doesn't work: Battlefield 3, Civilization V, Sniper Elite V2. The games that work: Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim, L.A. Noire. As you can see, it's not a problem of "The games that demand more stop working". I've tryed updating the driver of the graphics-card, the bios of the motherboard, even formated my computer (It was needing it) and instaled every driver in the last version possible. This problem happens since I bought my graphics-card, 6 months ago. After a few minutes, from 10 to 20, the pixels in the monitor become strange, with random colors and effects, like it was broken. Then, everything goes black, and the message appears "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered". After that, I need to close the game and start again. I am not overclocking, and my temperature never goes higher than 70ºC.

• PC -> TV HDMI suddenly doesn't work, any other option does

  So my parents wanted to connect their PC to their TV, so they bought a 10m (35 ft) cable. It all worked perfectly. Then my mom tripped over the cable, breaking it. She somehow got a free replacement, but at the same time some more expensive one from an uncle. Now the problem is that this suddenly doesn't work anymore (TV saying "Format not supported"). I've tried several other things to pinpoint the actual problem, but none brought me something conslusive: PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (both cables) PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (short cable) Laptop (hdmi) to TV work (same cables) BluRay (hdmi) to TV works (same cables) PC (hdmi) to monitor works (same cables) PC (DVI w/ adapter HDMI) to TV works (same cables) I've tried different ports, tried Linux, reinstalling drivers (the graphics card is internal using an i5 sandy bridge. Normally it's running Windows 7 Home Prem, the TV being a Philips 37PFL7605H). So basically, everything works, except that thing what we want. The only things I am thinking of is that the sound is interfering or that the HDMI-output is somehow broken. Or is it anything else? I'm kind of lost.

• Pendrive USB Ubuntu installation - black screen on boot

  I see many posts on this, but no solution. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my 16GB USB flash drive using this official link using their tool Universal USB Installer. Installation to USB went fine so I set my laptop to boot from USB and the Ubuntu was recognized. I saw the usual boot screen and I chose option "Run Ubuntu from this USB". The boot process started and after 5-6 seconds the screen goes black and non-responsive. I thought that it hang on X loading so I tried switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 but the system did not respond. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? PS. My laptop is HP Pavillion G6

• Debian Wheezy 7.5 64bit xfce4 install error ( no desktop environment installed already )

  i wrote a CD with an iso-image from debian.org. the debian-7.5.0-amd64-CD-1.iso from this folder. Debian Wheezy 7.5 stable 64bit There was an error at Select and install software step. It said Retrieving file 770 from 800 and then it failed the installation. I continued the instal and when i opened the computer it doesn't work the Ctrl + Alt + F7 as i waited. It starts at tty1 and after logging in i edited config file cause it had a lot of errors and said E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages or Couldn't found the package. • How do I analyze vague Google Analytics data re traffic from Facebook?

  We have one Facebook fan page and two personal profiles that could be sending traffic and then there are the many facebook pages of friends etc. I am also running an ad campaign from my FB account for my husband's business which has a link from his personal FB profile and his fan page. On Google analytics for his business we get the following referring sites from Facebook: /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under facebook.com / referral /l.php (which is a not-found page at FB /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under apps.facebook.com Both of the working links send me to the home page of my profile, which is the account I am working from to create and review the FB ad campaign that we are running. Is this info telling me any useful information at all? Is there a best practice for tracking and analyzing Facebook traffic that is a lot more granular? thanks!

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Execute a Managed bean from a JSF view in WEB-INF folder

  We are initiating in Spring + Primefaces development and the first problem we have encountered is about storing the xhtml pages into the WEB-INF folder. When we use a faces form in a view located inside the WEB-INF folder, then the commandButton does not execute the managed bean method. Our bean : In fact we think the problem is that with JSF , the pages are rendered using a link to the same page as the action of the form, so if the page is located in WEB-INF it is not public accessible. We know that having all our xhtml views in the web folder instead of WEB-INF actually solves the issue, but we would like to store that pages into WEB-INF. Thank you.
