• What is the best Battleship AI?

  Battleship! Back in 2003, (when I was 17,) I competed in a Battleship AI coding competition. Even though I lost that tournament, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from it. Now, I would like to resurrect this competition, in the search of the best battleship AI. Here is the framework: Battleship.zip The winner will be awarded +450 reputation! The competition will be held starting on the 17th of November, 2009. No entries or edits later than zero-hour on the 17th will be accepted. (Central Standard Time) Submit your entries early, so you don't miss your opportunity! To keep this OBJECTIVE, please follow the spirit of the competition. Rules of the game: The game is be played on a 10x10 grid. Each competitor will place each of 5 ships (of lengths 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) on their grid. No ships may overlap, but they may be adjacent. The competitors then take turns firing single shots at their opponent. A variation on the game allows firing multiple shots per volley, one for each surviving ship. The opponent will notify the competitor if the shot sinks, hits, or misses. Game play ends when all of the ships of any one player are sunk. Rules of the competition: The spirit of the competition is to find the best Battleship algorithm. Anything that is deemed against the spirit of the competition will be grounds for disqualification. Interfering with an opponent is against the spirit of the competition. Multithreading may be used under the following restrictions: No more than one thread may be running while it is not your turn. (Though, any number of threads may be in a "Suspended" state). No thread may run at a priority other than "Normal". Given the above two restrictions, you will be guaranteed at least 3 dedicated CPU cores during your turn. A limit of 1 second of CPU time per game is allotted to each competitor on the primary thread. Running out of time results in losing the current game. Any unhandled exception will result in losing the current game. Network access and disk access is allowed, but you may find the time restrictions fairly prohibitive. However, a few set-up and tear-down methods have been added to alleviate the time strain. Code should be posted on stack overflow as an answer, or, if too large, linked. Max total size (un-compressed) of an entry is 1 MB. Officially, .Net 2.0 / 3.5 is the only framework requirement. Your entry must implement the IBattleshipOpponent interface. Scoring: Best 51 games out of 101 games is the winner of a match. All competitors will play matched against each other, round-robin style. The best half of the competitors will then play a double-elimination tournament to determine the winner. (Smallest power of two that is greater than or equal to half, actually.) I will be using the TournamentApi framework for the tournament. The results will be posted here. If you submit more than one entry, only your best-scoring entry is eligible for the double-elim. • MDI WinForm application and duplicate child form memory leak

  This is a WinForm MDI application problem (.net framework 3.0). It will be described in C#. Sorry it is a bit long because I try to make things as clear as possible. I have a MDI application. At some point I find that one MDI child form is never released. There is a menu that creates the MDI child form and show it. When the MDI child form is closed, it is supposed to be destroyed and the memory taken by it should be given back to .net. But to my surprise, this is not true. All the MDI child form instances are kept in memory. This is obviously a "memory leak". Well, it is not a real leak in .net. It is just that I think the closed form should be dead but somehow there is at least one unknown reference from outside world that still connect with the closed form. I read some articles on the Web. Some says that when the MDI child form is closing, I should unwire all the event handlers, otherwise some event handlers may keep my form alive. Some says that DataBindings should be cleaned before the form is closing otherwise the DataBindings will add references to some global Hashtable and thus keep my form alive. My form contains quite a lot things. Many event handlers and many DataBindings and many BindingSources and few suspected controls containing user control and HelpProvider. I create a big method that unwires all the event handlers from all the relevant controls, clear all the DataBindings and DataSources. The HelpProvider and user controls are disposed carefully. At the end, I find that, I don't have to clear DataBindings and DataSources. Event handlers are definitely causing the problem. And MDI form structure also contributes to something. During my experiments, I find that, if you create a MDI child form, even if you close it, there will still be one instance in the memory. The reference is from PropertyStore of the main form. This means, unless the main form is closed (application ends), there will always be one instance of MDI child form in the memory. The good news is that, no matter how many times you open and close the child form, there will be only one instance, not a big "leak". When it comes to event handlers, things become more tricky. I have to address that, all the event handlers on my form are anonymous event handlers. Here is an example code: //On MDI child form's design code... Button btnSave = new Button(); btnSave.Click += new System.EventHandler(btnSave_Click); Where btnSave_Click is also a method in MDI child form. The above is always the case for various controls and various types of event. To me, this is a bi-directional circular reference. btnSave keeps a reference of MDI child form via the event handler. MDI child form keeps a reference of btnSave instance. To me again, such bi-directional circular reference should not cause any problem for .net's garbage collector. This means that I do not have to explicitly unwire the event when the form is being disposed: btnSave.Click -= btnSave_Click; But the truth is not so. For some event handlers, they are safe. Ignoring them do not cause any duplicate instance. For some other event handlers, they will cause one instance remaining in the memory (similar effect as the MDI form structure, but this time caused by the hanging event handlers). For some other event handlers, they will cause every instance opened in the memory. I am totally confused about the differences between these three types of event handlers. The controls are created in the same way and the event is attached in the same way. What is the difference? (Don't tell me it is the event handle methods that make difference.) Anyone has experience of this wired scenario and has an answer for me? Thanks a lot. So now, for safety issue, I will have to unwire all the event handlers when the form is being disposed. That will be a long list of similar code for each control. Is there a general way of removing events from controls in recursive way using reflection? What about performance issue? That's the end of my story and I am still in the middle of my problem. For any help, I thank you.

• Mixed-mode C++/CLI crashing: heap corruption in atexit (static destructor registration)

  I am working on deploying a program and the codebase is a mixture of C++/CLI and C#. The C++/CLI comes in all flavors: native, mixed (/clr), and safe (/clr:safe). In my development environment I create a DLL of all the C++/CLI code and reference that from the C# code (EXE). This method works flawlessly. For my releases that I want to release a single executable (simply stating that "why not just have a DLL and EXE separate?" is not acceptable). So far I have succeeded in compiling the EXE with all the different sources. However, when I run it I get the "XXXX has stopped working" dialog with options to Check online, Close and Debug. The problem details are as follows: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Fault Module Name: StackHash_8d25 Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16559 Fault Module Timestamp: 4ba9b29c Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000cdc9b OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 8d25 Additional Information 2: 8d25552d834e8c143c43cf1d7f83abb8 Additional Information 3: 7450 Additional Information 4: 74509ce510cd821216ce477edd86119c If I debug and send it to Visual Studio, it reports: Unhandled exception at 0x77d2dc9b in XXX.exe: A heap has been corrupted Choosing break results in it stopping at ntdll.dll!77d2dc9b() with no additional information. If I tell Visual Studio to continue, the program starts up fine and seems to work without incident, probably since a debugger is now attached. What do you make of this? How do I avoid this heap corruption? The program seems to work fine except for this. It seems that the CRT atexit function is responsible, being inadvertently required due to the static initializer. Fix As Ben Voigt pointed out the use of any CRT functions (including native static initializers) requires proper initialization of the CRT (which happens in mainCRTStartup, WinMainCRTStartup, or _DllMainCRTStartup). • Problem with room/screen/menu controller in python game: old rooms are not removed from memory

  I'm literally banging my head against a wall here (as in, yes, physically, at my current location, I am damaging my cranium). Basically, I've got a Python/Pygame game with some typical game "rooms", or "screens." EG title screen, high scores screen, and the actual game room. Something bad is happening when I switch between rooms: the old room (and its various items) are not removed from memory, or from my event listener. Not only that, but every time I go back to a certain room, my number of event listeners increases, as well as the RAM being consumed! (So if I go back and forth between the title screen and the "game room", for instance, the number of event listeners and the memory usage just keep going up and up. The main issue is that all the event listeners start to add up and really drain the CPU. I'm new to Python, and don't know if I'm doing something obviously wrong here, or what. • What is the right tool to detect VMT or heap corruption in Delphi ?

  I'm a member in a team that use Delphi 2007 for a larger application and we suspect heap corruption because sometimes there are strange bugs that have no other explanation. I believe that the Rangechecking option for the compiler is only for arrays. I want a tool that give an exception or log when there is a write on a memory address that is not allocated by the application. EDIT3: The theory right now is that the Virtual Memory Table (VMT) is somehow broken. When this happen there is no indication of it. Only when a method is called an exception is raised (ALWAYS on address FFFFFFDD, -35 decimal) but then it is too late. You don't know the real cause for the error. Any hint of how to catch a bug like this is really appreciated!!! We have tried with SafeMM, but the problem is that the memory consumption is too high even when the 3 GB flag is used. So now I try to give a bounty to the SO community :) EDIT4: One hint is that according the log there is often (or even always) another exception before this. It can be for example optimistic locking in the database. We have tried to raise exceptions by force but in test environment it just works fine. EDIT5: Story continues... I did a search on the logs for the last 30 days now. The result: "Read of address FFFFFFDB" 0 "Read of address FFFFFFDC" 24 "Read of address FFFFFFDD" 270 "Read of address FFFFFFDE" 22 "Read of address FFFFFFDF" 7 "Read of address FFFFFFE0" 20 "Read of address FFFFFFE1" 0 So the current theory is that an enum (there is a lots in Bold) overwrite a pointer. I got 5 hits with different address above. It could mean that the enum holds 5 values where the second one is most used. If there is an exception a rollback should occur for the database and Boldobjects should be destroyed. Maybe there is a chance that not everything is destroyed and a enum still can write to an address location. If this is true maybe it is possible to search the code by a regexpr for an enum with 5 values ? EDIT6: To summarize, no there is no solution to the problem yet. I realize that I may mislead you a bit with the callstack. Yes there are a timer in that but there are other callstacks without a timer. Sorry for that. But there are 2 common factors. An exception with Read of address FFFFFFxx. Top of callstack is System.TObject.InheritsFrom (sys\system.pas:9237) This convince me that VilleK best describe the problem. I'm also convinced that the problem is somewhere in the Bold framework. But the BIG question is, how can problems like this be solved ? It is not enough to have an Assert like VilleK suggest as the damage has already happened and the callstack is gone at that moment. So to describe my view of what may cause the error: Somewhere a pointer is assigned a bad value 1, but it can be also 0, 2, 3 etc. An object is assigned to that pointer. There is method call in the objects baseclass. This cause method TObject.InheritsForm to be called and an exception appear on address FFFFFFDD. Those 3 events can be together in the code but they may also be used much later. I think this is true for the last method call. EDIT7: We work closely with the the author of Bold Jan Norden and he recently found a bug in the OCL-evaluator in Bold framework. When this was fixed these kinds of exceptions decreased a lot but they still occasionally come. But it is a big relief that this is almost solved.

I hope somebody can break this down for me and provide a solution, and perhaps explain why I can't just create a View element in my main.xml layotu file and draw on it in code.

• Help with force close occurrences in my app

  This is the last issue with this app. Periodic force close situations. I think something should be on another thread but I'm not sure what. Anyway, I can always count on a freeze on first install. • How to implement drag and drop in Flex Grid control?

  I have a simple Grid control with some buttons that I want to be able to move around. The code below does work, but it takes a lot of effort to actually do the drag&drop and it is not clear where the drop will happen. I have to move the mouse around a lot to get to a state where the drop is not rejected. • Asp.net Google Charts SSL handler for GeoMap

  Hi All, I am trying to view Google charts in a site using SSL. Google Charts do not support SSL so if we use the standard charts, we get warning messages. My plan is to create a ASHX handler that is co9ntained in the secure site that will retrieve the content from Google and serve this to the page the user is viewing. Using VS 2008 SP1 and the included web server, my idea works perfectly for both Firefox and IE 8 & 9(Preview) and I am able to see my geomap displayed on my page as it should be. But my problem is when I publish to IIS7 the page using my handler to generate the geomap works in Firefox but not IE(every version). There are no errors anywhere or in any log files, but when i right click in IE in the area where the map should be displayed, I see the message in the context menu saying "movie not loaded" Below is the code from my handler and the aspx page. I have disabled compression in my web.config. Even in IE I am hitting all my break points and when I use the IE9 Developer tools, the web page is correctly generated with all the correct code, url's and references. If you have any better ways to accomplish this or how i can fix my problem, I will appreciate it.   I've written a ListActivity for Android 2.1 which is used to display a list of event categories. As the user selects a category, the program calls a web service to retrieve a list of sub-events. For example, a top level event might be "soccer" and when the user selects this the web service would return various soccer associations (e.g. "english", "french", "german", etc.) and display them in a new list. The following code seems to work occasionally, however sometimes the call to the service (in EventsListTask) fails because the serviceBinder is null. Is there anything I need to watch out for when doing this? Am I calling the target intent incorrectly? • jQuery: Highlight element under mouse cursor?

  I'm trying to create an "element picker" in jQuery, like Firebug has. Basically, I want to highlight the element underneath the user's mouse. Right now, this just makes the whole page go red as soon as you move your mouse over the page. How can I get this to work nicer? Edit: Pretty sure the problem is that as soon as my mouse touches the page, the body gets selected, and then as I move my mouse around, none of the moments get passed through the highligher because its overtop of everything. • How to get javascript object references or reference count?

  How to get reference count for an object Is it possible to determine if a javascript object has multiple references to it? Or if it has references besides the one I'm accessing it with? Or even just to get the reference count itself? Can I find this information from javascript itself, or will I need to keep track of my own reference counters. Obviously, there must be at least one reference to it for my code access the object. But what I want to know is if there are any other references to it, or if my code is the only place it is accessed. I'd like to be able to delete the object if nothing else is referencing it. If you know the answer, there is no need to read the rest of this question. Below is just an example to make things more clear. Use Case In my application, I have a Repository object instance called contacts that contains an array of ALL my contacts. There are also multiple Collection object instances, such as friends collection and a coworkers collection. Each collection contains an array with a different set of items from the contacts Repository. Sample Code To make this concept more concrete, consider the code below. Each instance of the Repository object contains a list of all items of a particular type. You might have a repository of Contacts and a separate repository of Events. But if there is a way to do it using javascript's built-in reference management, I'd like to hear about how to use it.

• Of these 3 methods for reading linked lists from shared memory, why is the 3rd fastest?

  I have a 'server' program that updates many linked lists in shared memory in response to external events. I want client programs to notice an update on any of the lists as quickly as possible (lowest latency). The server marks a linked list's node's state_ as FILLED once its data is filled in and its next pointer has been set to a valid location. Until then, its state_ is NOT_FILLED_YET. I am using memory barriers to make sure that clients don't see the state_ as FILLED before the data within is actually ready (and it seems to work, I never see corrupt data). Also, state_ is volatile to be sure the compiler doesn't lift the client's checking of it out of loops. Keeping the server code exactly the same, I've come up with 3 different methods for the client to scan the linked lists for changes. The question is: Why is the 3rd method fastest? But when the number of channels grew (250K+) it became very slow because of looping over all the channels. So I tried... Method 2: Give each linked list an ID. Keep a separate 'update list' to the side. Every time one of the linked lists is updated, push its ID on to the update list. Whereas Method 1 might give under 10us latency, Method 2 would inexplicably often given 8ms latency! Using gettimeofday it appears that the change in update_cursor-state_ was very slow to propogate from the server's view to the client's (I'm on a multicore box, so I assume the delay is due to cache). So I tried a hybrid approach... Method 3: Keep the update list. But loop over all the channels continuously, and within each iteration check if the update list has updated. If it has, go with the number pushed onto it. The problem is, I have no clue why. Just to throw a wrench in things: if I uncomment the 'found via update' part, it prints between EVERY LATENCY LOG MESSAGE. Which means things are only ever found on the update list! So I don't understand how this method can be faster than method 2. • Is there an equivalent to Java's ClassFileTransformer in .NET? (a way to replace a class)

  I've been searching for this for quite a while with no luck so far. Is there an equivalent to Java's ClassFileTransformer in .NET? Basically, I want to create a class CustomClassFileTransformer (which in Java would implement the interface ClassFileTransformer) that gets called whenever a class is loaded, and is allowed to tweak it and replace it with the tweaked version. I know there are frameworks that do similar things, but I was looking for something more straightforward, like implementing my own ClassFileTransformer. Is it possible? EDIT #1. More details about why I need this: Basically, I have a C# application and I need to monitor the instructions it wants to run in order to detect read or write operations to fields (operations Ldfld and Stfld) and insert some instructions before the read/write takes place. I know how to do this (except for the part where I need to be invoked to replace the class): for every method whose code I want to monitor, I must: Get the method's MethodBody using MethodBase.GetMethodBody() Transform it to byte array with MethodBody.GetILAsByteArray(). The byte[] it returns contains the bytecode. Analyse the bytecode as explained here, possibly inserting new instructions or deleting/modifying existing ones by changing the contents of the array. Create a new method and use the new bytecode to create its body, with MethodBuilder.CreateMethodBody(byte[] il, int count), where il is the array with the bytecode. I put all these tweaked methods in a new class and use the new class to replace the one that was originally going to be loaded. An alternative to replacing classes would be somehow getting notified whenever a method is invoked. Then I'd replace the call to that method with a call to my own tweaked method, which I would tweak only the first time is invoked and then I'd put it in a dictionary for future uses, to reduce overhead (for future calls I'll just look up the method and invoke it; I won't need to analyse the bytecode again). I'm currently investigating ways to do this and LinFu looks pretty interesting, but if there was something like a ClassFileTransformer it would be much simpler: I just rewrite the class, replace it, and let the code run without monitoring anything. An additional note: the classes may be sealed. I want to be able to replace any kind of class, I cannot impose restrictions on their attributes. EDIT #2. Why I need to do this at runtime. I need to monitor everything that is going on so that I can detect every access to data. This applies to the code of library classes as well. However, I cannot know in advance which classes are going to be used, and even if I knew every possible class that may get loaded it would be a huge performance hit to tweak all of them instead of waiting to see whether they actually get invoked or not. POSSIBLE (BUT PRETTY HARDCORE) SOLUTION. In case anyone is interested (and I see the question has been faved, so I guess someone is), this is what I'm looking at right now. Basically I'd have to implement the profiling API and I'll register for the events that I'm interested in, in my case whenever a JIT compilation starts. An extract of the blogpost: In your ICorProfilerCallback2::ModuleLoadFinished callback, you call ICorProfilerInfo2::GetModuleMetadata to get a pointer to a metadata interface on that module. QI for the metadata interface you want. Search MSDN for "IMetaDataImport", and grope through the table of contents to find topics on the metadata interfaces. Once you're in metadata-land, you have access to all the types in the module, including their fields and function prototypes. You may need to parse metadata signatures and this signature parser may be of use to you. In your ICorProfilerCallback2::JITCompilationStarted callback, you may use ICorProfilerInfo2::GetILFunctionBody to inspect the original IL, and ICorProfilerInfo2::GetILFunctionBodyAllocator and then ICorProfilerInfo2::SetILFunctionBody to replace that IL with your own. The great news: I get notified when a JIT compilation starts and I can replace the bytecode right there, without having to worry about replacing the class, etc. The not-so-great news: you cannot invoke managed code from the API's callback methods, which makes sense but means I'm on my own parsing the IL code, etc, as opposed to be able to use Cecil, which would've been a breeze. I don't think there's a simpler way to do this without using AOP frameworks (such as PostSharp). If anyone has any other idea please let me know. I'm not marking the question as answered yet.

• How to hide jQuery Sub-Menus(ddsmoothmenu)?

  I'm new to jQuery and i must admit that i've understood nothing yet, the syntax appears to me as an unknown language although i thought that i had my experiences with javascript. Nevertheless i managed it to implement this menu in my asp.net masterpage's header. Even got it to work that the content-page is loaded with ajax with help from here. But finally i'm failing with the menu to disappear when the new page was loaded asynchronously. I dont know how to hide this accursed jQuery Menu. Following the part of the js-file where the events are registered for hiding/disappearing.
