  • Are there any significant advantages to using a native language for mobile app development?

    Forgive me if this question has already been answered but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. What I wanted to know was, is there any significant advantage to using a native language when developing and deploying apps to a mobile environment? The reason I ask is for a long while now I've been using Objective-C, Apple's native language for iOS, to build my apps. However I've been wondering whether or not there is any real benefit to doing this, over using a non-native language like JavaScript and then deploying it through a service like 'Phone Gap'? I do stress 'significant' advantages as native languages are always more likely to have the upper hand when it comes to speed and access to the latest APIs. However in general I don't see using a non-native language or a service like 'Phone Gap' causing and major slow down to my apps or restricting my development. Additionally having the ability to deploy to multiple services is also very handy indeed. This is why I put the question, are there any significant advantages to using a native language for mobile app development?

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

    This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. The indicator can be successfully hidden using the PASSIVE thingy over there, but, during the call data-show();, the application crashes. Any help on what I am doing wrong would be appreciated! Also, please help me to correct this problem I'm facing (alternatively, I will migrate to the old and good tray icon (it works fine in 12.04, anyway) which I can handle very easily and efficiently)

  • Mobile web app, styling in percentages; I can't get height to work [migrated]

    I am building a mobile app for a band and obviously want it to display well in all the plethora of handsets out there today. I built it at first for my own device and it looks and works great, so now I am reworking it in percentages so that it works in all devices. I have a slider (jquerytools) going on and if i set width to 100% then it is perfectly wide in my iphone and my ipad... success, however I am not having any luck with height. It seems to only accept a height in px.   • How do I get public feed from facebook without user authentication on a native/Desktop app?

    I'm looking to get publicly available facebook feeds (i.e. Google's facebook page/posts). However instead of forcing the user to sign into their own facebook app, I want to be able to access these posts. I've looked into using "App Access Tokens" however since my application is a native/Desktop app (iOS, Android, WP8/Win 8) I'm not able to do this. Is there a way to get publicly accessible feeds from facebook without user authentication? I'm using the Facebook C# SDK to access facebook.   • iPad Web App: Detect Virtual Keyboard Using JavaScript in Safari?

    I'm writing a web app for the iPad (not a regular App Store app - it's written using HTML, CSS and JavaScript). Since the keyboard fills up a huge part of the screen, it would make sense to change the app's layout to fit the remaining space when the keyboard is shown. However, I have found no way to detect when or whether the keyboard is shown. My first idea was to assume that the keyboard is visible when a text field has focus. However, when an external keyboard is attached to an iPad, the virtual keyboard does not show up when a text field receives focus. In my experiments, the keyboard also did not affect the height or scrollheight of any of the DOM elements, and I have found no proprietary events or properties which indicate whether the keyboard is visible.

    I am working on quite complex app with huge sync procedure beetwen iphone and web server. I have no troubles with adding records, until I run sync procedure in separete thread, and It will update data on serwer, and send them back to iphone.   • How to access the Desktop Composition Engine from a WinForms app?

    Is it possible to access Desktop Composition Engine in Windows Vista from a winforms application? The DCE apparently involves applications rendering to DCE buffers instead of directly to the screen. Since a winforms app has no way of getting information about the monitor's refresh rate and scanline status (other than via DirectX), animation in a winforms app is subject to tearing effects. With DCE enabled, the tearing effects are lessened but still there (apparently the DCE can still grab a buffer that your app is halfway through writing to and render it to the screen, thereby producing the half-one-frame-half-of-the-next tearing effects). Is there any way for my winforms app to communicate with the DCE and possible avoid rendering during buffer switchover times?

  • Rails Routing Broken In Production - Caching of routes.rb suspected

    Hi folks, i have an urgent problem. Essentially, my routing works on my localhost. But when i deployed this to production, the routes does not seem to work correctly.   • Need strategy to phone home to a Pyton web app and check licensing information for a commercial Wind

    What's a good strategy for building licensing checking into a Windows desktop app using a Python web application? This is a very open ended question because I don't have the slightest clue how to start to build this feature. What I do have is a number of general concerns: I have developed a commercial Windows desktop application and I want to make money from it but I don't want to build the licensing into the app since it's inevitable that someone will create a keygen or a crack, circulate it online and then it's 'game over' for me. So my idea was to create a web application where people could purchase a license key that is generated by the web app and every time the desktop application is started up, it will 'phone home' to the web app to check whether the license is valid and whether it seems to be in use at multiple locations. I'm just not sure how to do this. Would appreciate any general technical strategies and/or pointers to libraries/modules that might be of use.

  • Building a Universal iPad App - Where is the device recognition code?

    I noticed that when I create a new project in XCode for a Universal iPad/iPhone application, the template comes with two separate App Delegate files, one for each device. I can't seem to locate the place in code where it tries to decide which app delegate to use. I have an existing iPhone project I'd like to port to iPad. My thinking was that if I went ahead and designed the iPad project, I could just import my iPhone classes and nibs, and then use the App Delegate and UIDevice to decide which MainWindow.xib to load. The process went like this: Create an iPad project coded as a split-view create brand new classes and nibs for the iPad import iPhone classes and nibs Change build/target settings in accordance with Universal Apps Use [[UIDevice currentDevice] model] in the AppDelegate to decide which MainWindow to load Will this work, or does the app just automatically know which device it's being deployed on?     Hi I am doing Silverlight 4 In my database, I have a store procedure(having two parameters) which returns rows (with extra fields). So i have to make a complex type for those rows on my Models. And Making a service to call that function import store procedure. The RIA will automatically create a matching Entity(to the complex type) and an operation for me. However, I don't know how to validation the parameters of the operation on both client and server side. For example, the parameter must be an integer only (and greater than 10) or datetime only. below is my xaml code.   • What's the best way to store a MySQL database in source control?

My thoughts are two have two files: one would be the create script for the tables, etc, and the other would be the inserts for our sample data. Is this a good approach?   • Why does by iPhone App cannot load NSURL when linked against iPhone OS SDK 4.0 and run on iPhone OS

    I have an iPhone App linked against iPhone SDK 4.0 but as deployment target I selected OS 3.1. When I start the application on my iPod touch running 3.1.3 I get an error that the class NSURL cannot be found: dyld: Symbol not found: _OBJC_CLASS_$_NSURL Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/21ECAA8E-8777-4020-82F5-56C510D0AEAE/myTracks4iPhoneOS.app/myTracks4iPhoneOS Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework/CoreFoundation in /var/mobile/Applications/21ECAA8E-8777-4020-82F5-56C510D0AEAE/myTracks4iPhoneOS.app/myTracks4iPhoneOS Data Formatters temporarily unavailable, will re-try after a 'continue'.   • iPhone: Core Data: Updating a pre-filled database in future app versions.

    I am creating an app with a database of information that needs to be pre-filled. This data will change in future versions. In the same database, I also need to store user editable information since that user edited data directly relates to the pre-filled data. My question is, if I'm pre-filling the database by creating a duplicate data model in a second app and copying over the core data file before release, how would I handle updates to that data in future versions of the app without destroying the user's existing data? Do the core data migration methods handle this, or must I write custom methods to programatically handle the merge at first app launch?

  • What's the best way to store sort order in SQL?

    The guys at the top want sort order to be customizable in our app. So I have a table that effectively defines the data type. What is the best way to store our sort order. If I just created a new column called 'Order' or something, every time I updated the order of one row I imagine I would have to update the order of every row to ensure posterity. Is there a better way to do it?
