  is there a way to let terminal services make some kind of 'abstraction' over the physical network interfaces of the server so they can be managed via gpo to grant or prohibit access for different users? the basic idea is to have 2 network interfaces (user and server/management) and not letting users within terminal sessions access the server/management network. or is this just impossible ? what would be a better way to do this ?

  I only have command line access to a server and I'm not allowed to disable the antivirus (which blocks netcat). What I would like to do is have a program that listens on port A and when a remote computer connects to it redirect all input/output of that socket to another server on a different port. Basically a small proxy. Is there anything that will let me do this from command line? If not I could try coding something simple that does this with C++

• Change the default program for a filetype to something not in "Program Files" in Windows Vista

  I'm trying to make my python scripts run in python 2.6 by default when run from the command line. This is paired with adding certain scripts to the PATH variable and .py to PATHEXT for convenience. But I'll be damned if I can get the file type association to work. In the default programs dialog (found in control panel) I find .py, and click "Change Program." This gives me the same dialog as clicking "Open with..." on a file's context menu. I search for python. Tell it to use python, but it doesn't add it to the list of programs I am allowed to use. I tried making a shortcut to python in Program Files, but that won't work either. If I copy python into a folder in Program Files, then that works. But why can't I just point it at C:\python26\python.exe (which is in the PATH variable) in the first place? Is there a way around this, or do I have to just reinstall python into Program Files?

• Back up Windows 2008 SBS to iSCSI disk

  I've almost no experience with SBS 2008, so please excuse my noob question! SBS 2008 only has the most basic backup utility built in as far as I can tell (similar to Vista), and it will only back up to physical volumes. I've read that you can set up a batch task to backup to a network volume, but right now I just need to get something deployed ASAP. We have an iSCSI target with plenty of free space. Is it worth backing up to an iSCSI target? Or am I wasting my time? If I need to do a recovery from the iSCSI disk, how would I go about it?

  Hello, We have 2 servers let's call them server A and server B. Server B is never used unless something goes wrong with server A. I need a system that can replicate server A to server B but this doesn't have to be continues. This only has to be done once every day (let's say at 1 am or so). Also, it's not necessary to automatically take over the server, this can be done manually. On this server IIS is running and sql 2008 so all webapplications and databases must be synced/replicated.   I have and asus r500v with 750 gb gpt system uefi motherboard core i7 3610qm, nvidia geforce gt, with ubuntu and w7 dual boot, I had problems installing ubuntu because of the grub but I fix it with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/807801, but I still have the problem of "warning: the partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes. this may result iin very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested" in every linux partitioin I made and my 750 gb is not being used at the maximun capacity it only uses 698 gb. I want to make partitions so that the warning doesnt show up and I can use the maximum capacity of the HDD, as I did with another dual boot laptop (compaq presario cq40). • Time not propagating to machines on Windows domain

  We have a two-domain Active Directory forest: ourcompany.com at the root, and prod.ourcompany.com for production servers. Time is propagating properly through the root domain, but servers in the child domain are unable to sync via NTP. So the time on these servers is starting to drift, since they're relying only on the hardware clock. WHen I type "net time" on one of the production servers, I get the following error: Could not locate a time-server. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3912. When I type "w32tm /resync", i get the following: Sending resync command to local computer The computer did not resync because no time data was available. "w32tm /query /source" shows the following: Free-running System Clock We have three domain controllers in the prod.ourcompany.com subdomain (overkill, but the result of a migration - we haven't gotten rid of one of the old ones yet.) To complicate matters, the domain controllers are all virtualized, running on two different physical hosts. But the time on the domain controllers themselves is accurate - the servers that aren't DCs are the ones having problems. Two of the DCs are running Server 2003, including the PDC emulator. The third DC is running Server 2008. (I could move the PDC emulator role to the 2008 machine if that would help.) The non-DC servers are all running Server 2008. All other Active Directory functionality works fine in the production domain - we're only seeing problems with NTP. I can manually sync each machine to the time source (the PDC emulator) by doing the following: net time \\dc1.prod.ourcompany.com /set /y But this is just a one-off, and it doesn't cause automated time syncing to start working. I guess I could create a scheduled task which runs the above command periodically, but I'm hoping there's a better way. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this isn't working, and what we can do to fix it? Thanks for your help, Richard

• Unable To Successfully Use Java Anywhere (Windows 7 64bit)

  This is a bit of an odd issue: (This is with JRE 7u7 32bit.) New Lenovo W530 laptop, everything is shiny. I tried to use a java applet for the first time recently (in Chrome). I got the Java logo and it started spinning like it was going to load, but didn't get anywhere and the browser locked up. I tried IE. Same deal. Tried Firefox. Same deal. So, I did the usual things: Rebooted, nothing. Un-installed Java, rebooted, re-installed, nothing. Tried it installing a 64bit Java as well. Same thing. I tried JRE6. Same thing. I uninstalled and manually deleted all the registry entries I could find related to it, then re-installed. Same thing. I un-installed and used the JavaRa utility. Same exact thing. I've not been able to use web applets or desktop stuff (minecraft), until yesterday. I did a graphics driver update and I was able to play minecraft for small amounts of time. It crashed regularly and wouldn't start reliably. No change in web applets. I'm at my wits end here. I'm to the point where reformatting is my only option. If anyone has any ideas at all, that would be awesome.

• what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition in Windows 7 diskpart

  I was trying to follow the Intel guide for setting up iRST (Intel Rapid Start Technology) on my new laptop. The Intel manual says you need to create a *Volume that is as big or bigger than your available memory, set it to a specific id (id=84), then go into the iRST tool and adjust some settings. Looking at the disk manager on the laptop, I see there is already a Partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition" which is a little bigger than the memory in my system. So it looks like iRST was already set up...BUT, it's a Partition, not a Volume. Here's what the manual says to do: (from: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf) diskpart list disk select disk x (where x is the disk to use, there's only one disk in this laptop) create partition primary size=X000 (where X000 is the size to create) detail disk (which lists details for the disk. This is where i get hung up) select volume Z (where Z is the *partition you created previously) ** it says the 'detail disk' command will list the volume #, but it doesn't. ** 'detail disk' only lists two "volumes" for Recovery and OS. ** if i do 'list partition', i see the 8 GB *partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition") ** so I can't continue with the following steps: set id=84 override exit The reason I went looking for the manual is because when iRST is enabled in the BIOS, the system won't resume from sleep. When it's disabled, it works fine, but the system goes into (legacy?) Hibernation mode and takes a while to come out of Hibernation. the iRST is supposed to resume from deep sleep very quickly. So, what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition? Should I delete the Hibernation Partition and create a Hibernation Volume? Anyone have any ideas? (if it matters, this is on a Dell XPS 13 with BIOS A08) Thanks! J

• Windows 7 won't boot from raid-1 disks until secondary non-bootable disks are removed

  I have an ASUS X58 motherboard with a Intel ICH10R southbridge raid controller. Bootable raid-1 SATA disks are on channels 4, 5. Secondary raid-1 SATA disks are on channels 0,1. Everything was working OK until one time I removed the secondary disks and booted successfully but after I shut down and reinstalled the secondary disks rebooting fails with a "Please insert proper boot item" error. If I remove the secondary disks and reboot then do a hot-install of the disks after booting completes, then all is OK. Do I have a raid setup problem or is it something I can fix with Disk Manager.

By accident a fellow administrator typed the old password and still bypassed the UAC with what should have been the incorrect password. Is this a bug with the environment? or something that needs to be tweaked in the server sided settings?   I have Xampp Installed on my PC, and it works fine. Every Service starts fine except Apache. I went to Services in Administrative Tools, and tried to start it fro there...no success... I tried Xampp Shell to run apache by typing: "xampp_cli start apache"...fail... I tried reinstallling Xampp...fail I tried turning my computer off/on...fail... I restored the registry from when I first installed xampp when Apache worked...still...fail Any Ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

  could anybody suggest a light (small, fast) text editor that can handle columnar view of csv files? save quote character to all fields, even if not 'necessary' OpenOffice Calc is bit big for my old laptop. My favourite Notepad++ cannot do the columnar view. And it seems to me that Sharp Tools Spreadsheet cannot import csv file. GoogleDoc convert some date fields by default which I do not want and it is really not fast and easy way how to edit csv.

• MMC crashes on Windows Server 2008 x64 - Exchange console, event viewer

  Help! I don't know what happened; this server has been very reliable but suddenly began having problems with a particular .NET 2.0 web site simply hanging - it wouldn't load at all. However, another ASP.NET site was still fine. Reinstalling the site didn't fix it, nor did deleting and re-creating the application within IIS. Trying the event viewer was met with a horrifying "Microsoft Management Console has stopped working". Some Googling led me to believe the .NET framework was the problem. I found a tool called the .NET cleanup tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx - which cleaned out .NET entirely. I reinstalled .NET 1.1 and 3.5 (which installed 2.0 and 3.0 as well). Using the .NET verification tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx - I believe these have all installed ok. However, my server is in worse shape now. The Exchange 2010 Management Console crashes with an MMC error and now my other (previously reliable) .NET web app now hangs on loading too. I thought I should use Computer Management to remove and re-add the application and web server roles but sure enough, MMC crashes. If anyone can help I will be extremely grateful. Thank you !

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

  I originally tried to rejoin a computer to a network which led to a "cannot find domain" error. The username/password box don't even come up. some tests i ran: I can ping the server, however I can't ping the domain name domain1.local. nslookup can't find the domain either. It looks to the isp's dns instead of my own to resolve the local machines. So i go to the dns and run netdiag.exe and gives me this error.   Hello everyone. The question is easy to answer I guess. (Tried to search here, didn't find an answer.) So. The deal: There is a bug in OpenOffice (haha ..just one? :)), which prevents the spellcheck. You have to start it with right-click , run as administrator to make it work. Tried also setting this at the 'properties', but it didn't work. But 'quickstart.exe' would be also enough to make this work. (OpenOffice's quickstarter). So I'd like to run it at boot, as an admin, like I'd do with right-click. How to do THAT? (Actually there is a different bug for spellcheck on Win7. One have to run oowriter.exe as an admin, and then install the extension BY HAND from Program Files...\share...*.oxt. And THEN it'll work IF you run the app as an admin. (I'll buy SoftMaker's office as soon as the hu spellcheck arrives, but until then I have to make this work. Thanks for the answers in advance.))

  I know it has been asked before, but I would like it to happen in real time and transparently (without the need to open a separate FTP client such as FileZilla). For example, if I edit a text file in the local folder and then save it, it should immediately detect it and push the changes to the remote folder. It can be unidirectional (changes made on the local folder has to be pushed to the remote folder but the reverse is not necessary). It should also be able to specify some excluded files/folders which do not need to be in sync. Is there such an application that you know of?

  had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

• Windows Vista: Screen remains darkened for 30-60 seconds *after* UAC prompt

  Fixing someone's Vista computer. Process: I click any program or process that opens a User Account Control prompt. Screen goes dim so you may hit Continue to perform a secure user action. I click Continue Screen goes black for 30 seconds to 1 minute while you wait for the screen to return. In another example I click Cancel and screen still then goes black for 30 seconds to a minute. In that timeframe a chime goes off while you wait. (No chime if it was being cancelled.) Then screen comes back to continue with whatever. Something is occurring after the UAC prompt. Considering everything is practically a UAC acceptance this can get pretty annoying pretty quickly. Laptop has external monitor to regular external plug. Works fine. Laptop also has USB IOGEAR additional external video card. This is problematic but when unplugged same above behaviour occurs. I've ruled out monitor interference since same blackout after the UAC prompt appears with external monitors plugged in or when rebooted with no external monitors. Any suggestions on how to address this problem?
