• Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

  I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. • What is the fastest MD5 sum calculator?

  I tested the speed of md5sum on a few Ubuntu 8.04 servers Pentium III 700 MHz: 52 MB/s Atom 1.6 GHz, 32-bit: 119 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 32-bit: 194 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 64-bit: 222 MB/s Then I downloaded a tool (by apt-get install) called md5deep and found that it's roughly 20% faster (as tested on the 32-bit Core 2 server). This makes me feel that the "vanilla" md5sum included in Ubuntu isn't the fastest one. Questions: Other than md5deep, are you aware of any MD5 calculators that are potentially faster than md5sum? (Answers for software from other OS are also welcomed.) If I want to compile md5sum myself, where can I download the source? What compiler options would you suggest for the Core 2 server? (note: gcc 4.2.4 in Ubuntu 8.04 does not seem to support -march=core2)

  Is there a freeware Windows/Linux GUI packet replay tool that has the advanced features of tcpreplay (http://tcpreplay.synfin.net/) or bittwist (http://bittwist.sourceforge.net)? I'm particularly interested in the following features: Open pcap files for editing and injecting into arbitrary network Change source and destination addresses/ports of UDP packets Change packet timing (with millisecond resolution) Edit packet contents, including modifying its length Has graphical front end for Windows or Linux (or Mac OS X) I've scanned a couple lists of potential tools (here and here), but nothing really fits my requirements. The closest tool might be Ostinato (http://code.google.com/p/ostinato/), but it doesn't appear to open packet capture files. Thanks for any help!

• Retrieving Chrome History and History Archives for Mac

  I've read some articles here that suggest that we are able to retrieve Chrome's history as SQLite databases: Export history from chome browser How can I view "archived" Google Chrome history — i.e. history older than three months? I can't seem to find the folder where these are supposed to be located. In the first article, the provided path was ~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default/History, but there is no such directory in my filesystem. I am using Chrome 26.0.1410.65 on Mac OS X Lion. And I am signed in with my Google account. Is there something similar to that but for Mac? Is there a way to find the folder where Chrome stores my history?

  I'm using the latest Chrome dev build on Mac OS X. Recently, I've been getting this message on any HTTPS webpage when I visit it the first time: The site's security certificate is not trusted! You attempted to reach checkout.google.com, but the server presented a certificate issued by an entity that is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may mean that the server has generated its own security credentials, which Google Chrome cannot rely on for identity information, or an attacker may be trying to intercept your communications. You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site. Why is this here, and how can I fix it? It may be because of my development build, but many other people use the dev version also, and I expect it would be fixed quicker then this.

  Thanks to Lifehacker I came across Sikuli which is described as: Sikuli is a visual technology to search and automate graphical user interfaces (GUI) using images (screenshots). The first release of Sikuli contains Sikuli Script, a visual scripting API for Jython, and Sikuli IDE, an integrated development environment for writing visual scripts with screenshots easily. Sikuli Script automates anything you see on the screen without internal API's support. You can programmatically control a web page, a desktop application running on Windows/Linux/Mac OS X, or even an iphone application running in an emulator. As this looks very promising, perhaps complementary to AutoHotKey I'm curious what scripts you guys will come up with. Especially since this program is portable and could solve "simple" Super User problems. • Using VNC as a virtual KVM switch

  I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop. I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC. Is this possible? I'm using realVNC viewer and connecting to the default in-built VNC server on Mac OS X Lion. Cheers for any help.

• Where to find other versions of Opera browser as deb packages?

  I used Opera mainly for the Unite feature now to be abandoned. It is missing in v. 12. Some say its features will re-emerge in future extensions etc. Until then, Unite is still accessible in v. 11. Where do I get the v.11 deb? P.S. In fact it seems that opera unite (at least in its older form) is dying while I am editing this question. Access to opera-unite applications from within opera-unite is poor or absent. This issue is obscure to me for now (31.08.2012) because yesterday I have installed v12 in Windows OS (with opera-unite and basic applications - file sharing and media player - already installed) and it is still working (server is working). The v12 Ubuntu version came today without unite, and after installing v11 (which has unite) I could not get applications (file sharing, etc). But they are still available: here and after downloading these files which have te .ua extension, they can be installed by opening them with Opera (v.11) But as opera-unite is no longer supported, it is possible that the server that provides the file sharing etc will soon be unaccessible. Even if that is the case the question should maybe not be closed at it has a general usefulness independently of the unite issue.

  Hello sysadmins, We use Siemens Step7 and SCL for PLC programming in our company. I recently got to install Windows 7 and had yet to find out that the Siemens software suite doesn't install anymore. - Which is a pain... Checking through the setup files, I found following entries in the Setups.ini file: [OS] PlattformIDAllowed=1;2 WinXP=True WinXPExclude=0,Home,1 WinXPWarning=1 WinNETServer=True WinNETServerExclude=Home,0,1 WinNETServerWarning=Home,0,1 Win2003=1 Win2003Exclude=Home,0,1 Win2003Warning=Home,0,1 Win2003R2=1 Win2003R2Exclude=0,1 Win2003R2Warning=0,1 WinVista=1 Win2008=1 Win7=1 I added the last line to try things out and it still provides me the same error.. • Samba Domain Controller corrupts Windows workstations profiles?

  Oooooook, so here's my problem. I have a Mac OS X Server 10.5 to which Windows XP workstations are bound. I happened upon some errors and warnings in my log, from Userenv. Namely, error 1504, 1509. The warning complains that some setting on the share about offline caching. I found some guides to correct this if the problem was referring to a Windows server, but since those are Samba shares, the guide of course doesn't apply. Does anyone know what to do so that my profiles don't corrupt, and I still can use roaming profiles so that they're backed up by the server?

• xubuntu 12.04 totally refuses to boot after install with wubi on old computer. any tips or suggestions on things i can do to fix this problem?

  so, i downloaded xubuntu 12.04 32-bit (not alt version) from the xubuntu.org website and placed the .zip into a folder named XUBUNTU on my desktop. i then extracted the files to that folder and ran wubi. i selected xubuntu from the drop down and clicked install. i let it do its thing and then chose the option to reboot when prompted. this is when i went to my girlfriends house for the day and left my laptop (dell latitude 120L) to finish the install. i came back home (about 8 hours later) to find my computer on the windows 7 log in screen when i rebooted my computer once more. i booted xubuntu just fine and things seemed to work perfectly. i turned off the pc and went to bed. next morning i booted xubuntu again without problems. i rebooted and went to windows, then next time i tried booting xubuntu in the middle of the splash screen it went black and the cpu light stopped blinking. i force shut down the computer and tried booting again when the same thing happened (instead of going black the splash just froze). i went back to windows and uninstalled and reintalled the os and havent beej able to boot it since. i even tried booting lubuntu with the same problem. please help!

• Getting USB boot to work in SmartOS on HP ProLiant N40L

  I recently downloaded SmartOS and tried running it on my HP ProLiant N40L, but it always fails on boot. After dd'ing the image to the USB stick, I plug it into the internal USB header and turn the machine on. After selecting from GRUB, it displays the following: , bss=0x0 It sits there for 2-4 minutes, then finally boots the OS and displays the following: WARNING: Couldn't read ACPI SRAT table from BIOS. lgrp support will be limited to one group. SunOS Release 5.11 Version joyent_20120614T184600Z 64-bit Copyright (c) 2010-2012, Joyent Inc. All rights reserved. WARNING: kvm: no hardware support After that, it hangs. I've tried this with two different USB sticks. I've seen some mentions on the SmartOS website about people running it on an N40L, booting from USB, so maybe it's just broken hardware? Has anyone gotten this working?

• Vista Startup Repair cannot repair my Toshiba Laptop (L300D)

  I installed some updates, and now the computer doesn't boot up, it just keep's telling me to go to repair, which doesn't fix the problem. I see the BSOD on startup, but it flashes by too quick. • Snow Leopard tzdata

  I live in Argentina, and our DST rules change often. So often, that major OS' tend to ship with an old version of tzdata DBs. In the past, I successfully updated the time zone databases in Tiger and Leopard. Today, however, when trying to update it in Snow Leopard, it did not work. Not only it failed, but now even after I reverted my changes, there seems to be some "cache" where the time zone information was retained. The files I updated (and reverted) are located at: /usr/share/zoneinfo and /usr/share/icu. To update those, I grabbed Apple's source code for ICU and recompiled it's database using the latest tzdata file (2010b). Then, I recompiled the tzinfo by running zic, and copied all the files to the system folders. Does anyone have experience dealing with Snow Leopard's timezone DB and can help? Thank you.

• Able to connect by SSH, but not x2go

  I am having trouble connecting to a remote server with X2GO using a DSA key. Connecting works fine over SSH, but when I try to connect with X2GO, it goes immediately to the username/password box and doesn't want to use the private key I specify in the options. If I select "Try auto login" it appears to try to connect and then I get the following error: No public key matched Access denied. Authentication that can continue: publickey It was working previously, but I reinstalled the client OS and since then I am unable to connect. I copied all of the SSH keys over from the previous installation. I also tried deleting my ~/.ssh/known_hosts file and adding the key to ssh-agent with no success, but the key is definitely added correctly: $ ssh-add -l 1024 b9:3d:e5:ef:48:ea:fc:c6:6e:45:89:b5:35:e7:58:39 server.com_dsa (DSA) Note, if I enable password authentication on the server, I can connect fine, however I would like to use publickey. Any ideas how I can connect with public key authentication?

• How should i setup my PC partition?

  I want to clear out my PC and setup the partitions. Right now i have it as XP, Win-7, Vista, XP/Test/Spare I notice my PC is pretty good at virtualization, at least virtualizing linux. I also rarely boot out of my primary XP although i do find myself deving on windows 7 once in a while. So i figure i can have it as XP, Windows 7, data partition then... what? i still have one more slot. There may be a more useful way to do this so what do you guys think? My bro has 2gb partition that is used to restore the OS which can be ran during the bootup process. However i dont think i can do that with mine. So, what are you thoughts?

• How to become a Kernel/Systems/Device driver programmer?

  Hello all! I currently work in a professional capacity as a software engineer working with the Android OS. We work at integrating our platform as a native daemon among other facets of the project. I primarily work in Java developing the SDK and Android applications, but get to help with the platform in C/C++. Anywho, I have a great interest to work professionally developing low level for linux. I am not unhappy in my current position and will hang around as long as the company lets me (as a matter of fact I quite enjoy working there!), but I would like to work my way that direction. I've been working through Linux Kernel Development (Robert Love) and The Linux Programming Interface (Michael Kerrisk) (In addition to strengthening my C skills at every chance I get) and casually browsing Monster and similar sites. The problem I see is, there are no entry level positions. How does one break into this field? Anytime I see "Linux Systems Programmer" or "Linux Device Driver Programmer" they all require at the minimum 5-7 years of relevant experience. They want someone who knows the ropes, not a junior level programmer (I've been working for 7 months now...). So, I'm assuming, that some of you on stackoverflow work in a professional capacity doing just what I would like to do. How did you get there? What platforms did you use to work your way there? Am I going to have a more difficult time because I have my bachelors in CSC as opposed to a computer engineer (where they would experience a bit more embedded, asm, etc)?

• HP Pavilion dv6000 graphics issue

  A few days ago my laptop seized up on me while I was playing a game. When I restarted the computer, it sent me back to 640x480 resolution with 16 colors (clearly a graphical issue). In device manager, it shows an error, stating "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" regarding the video card. Upon removing and re-installing the drivers using both Windows Update and my own searching through nvidia's site, it's given me zero results. For kicks, I ran my antivirus (you never know!) and registry cleaner to see if anything would turn up. The antivirus found nothing, but CCleaner found 27 registry errors all dealing with my video card. What could be the cause of this, and what course of action would you recommend in this situation? The PC is connected to the laptop using a Ethernet cable and internet is shared between them. I want to connect my mobile device to my laptop by making the laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. • Performance Optimization &ndash; It Is Faster When You Can Measure It

  Performance optimization in bigger systems is hard because the measured numbers can vary greatly depending on the measurement method of your choice. To measure execution timing of specific methods in your application you usually use Time Measurement Method Potential Pitfalls Stopwatch Most accurate method on recent processors. Internally it uses the RDTSC instruction. Since the counter is processor specific you can get greatly different values when your thread is scheduled to another core or the core goes into a power saving mode. But things do change luckily: Intel's Designer's vol3b, section 16.11.1 "16.11.1 Invariant TSC The time stamp counter in newer processors may support an enhancement, referred to as invariant TSC. Processor's support for invariant TSC is indicated by CPUID.80000007H:EDX[8]. The invariant TSC will run at a constant rate in all ACPI P-, C-. and T-states. This is the architectural behavior moving forward. On processors with invariant TSC support, the OS may use the TSC for wall clock timer services (instead of ACPI or HPET timers). TSC reads are much more efficient and do not incur the overhead associated with a ring transition or access to a platform resource." DateTime.Now Good but it has only a resolution of 16ms which can be not enough if you want more accuracy.   Reporting Method Potential Pitfalls Console.WriteLine Ok if not called too often. Debug.Print Are you really measuring performance with Debug Builds? Shame on you. Trace.WriteLine Better but you need to plug in some good output listener like a trace file. But be aware that the first time you call this method it will read your app.config and deserialize your system.diagnostics section which does also take time.   In general it is a good idea to use some tracing library which does measure the timing for you and you only need to decorate some methods with tracing so you can later verify if something has changed for the better or worse. In my previous article I did compare measuring performance with quantum mechanics. This analogy does work surprising well. When you measure a quantum system there is a lower limit how accurately you can measure something. The Heisenberg uncertainty relation does tell us that you cannot measure of a quantum system the impulse and location of a particle at the same time with infinite accuracy. For programmers the two variables are execution time and memory allocations. If you try to measure the timings of all methods in your application you will need to store them somewhere. The fastest storage space besides the CPU cache is the memory. But if your timing values do consume all available memory there is no memory left for the actual application to run. On the other hand if you try to record all memory allocations of your application you will also need to store the data somewhere. This will cost you memory and execution time. These constraints are always there and regardless how good the marketing of tool vendors for performance and memory profilers are: Any measurement will disturb the system in a non predictable way. Commercial tool vendors will tell you they do calculate this overhead and subtract it from the measured values to give you the most accurate values but in reality it is not entirely true. After falling into the trap to trust the profiler timings several times I have got into the habit to Measure with a profiler to get an idea where potential bottlenecks are. Measure again with tracing only the specific methods to check if this method is really worth optimizing. Optimize it Measure again. Be surprised that your optimization has made things worse. Think harder Implement something that really works. Measure again Finished! - Or look for the next bottleneck. Recently I have looked into issues with serialization performance. For serialization DataContractSerializer was used and I was not sure if XML is really the most optimal wire format. After looking around I have found protobuf-net which uses Googles Protocol Buffer format which is a compact binary serialization format. What is good for Google should be good for us. Lets use it! After switching over to protbuf-net the transfered wire data has dropped by a factor two (good) and the performance has worsened by nearly a factor two. How is that possible? We have measured it? Protobuf-net is much faster! As it turns out protobuf-net is faster but it has a cost: For the first time a type is de/serialized it does use some very smart code-gen which does not come for free. Lets try to measure this one by setting of our performance test app the Runs value not to one million but to 1. Serializer Time in ms N objects protobuf-net 85 1 DataContract 24 1 The code-gen overhead is significant and can take up to 200ms for more complex types. The break even point where the code-gen cost is amortized by its faster serialization performance is (assuming small objects) somewhere between 20.000-40.000 serialized objects. As it turned out my specific scenario involved about 100 types and 1000 serializations in total. That explains why the good old DataContractSerializer is not so easy to take out of business. The final approach I ended up was to reduce the number of types and to serialize primitive types via BinaryWriter directly which turned out to be a pretty good alternative. It sounded good until I measured again and found that my optimizations so far do not help much. After looking more deeper at the profiling data I did found that one of the 1000 calls did take 50% of the time. So how do I find out which call it was? Normal profilers do fail short at this discipline. A (totally undeserved) relatively unknown profiler is SpeedTrace which does unlike normal profilers create traces of your applications by instrumenting your IL code at runtime. This way you can look at the full call stack of the one slow serializer call to find out if this stack was something special. Unfortunately the call stack showed nothing special. But luckily I have my own tracing as well and I could see that the slow serializer call did happen during the serialization of a bool value. When you encounter after much analysis something unreasonable you cannot explain it then the chances are good that your thread was suspended by the garbage collector. If there is a problem with excessive GCs remains to be investigated but so far the serialization performance seems to be mostly ok.  When you do profile a complex system with many interconnected processes you can never be sure that the timings you just did measure are accurate at all. Some process might be hitting the disc slowing things down for all other processes for some seconds as well. There is a big difference between warm and cold startup. If you restart all processes you can basically forget the first run because of the OS disc cache, JIT and GCs make the measured timings very flexible. When you are in need of a random number generator you should measure cold startup times of a sufficiently complex system. After the first run you can try again getting different and much lower numbers. Now try again at least two times to get some feeling how stable the numbers are. Oh and try to do the same thing the next day. It might be that the bottleneck you found yesterday is gone today. Thanks to GC and other random stuff it can become pretty hard to find stuff worth optimizing if no big bottlenecks except bloatloads of code are left anymore. When I have found a spot worth optimizing I do make the code changes and do measure again to check if something has changed. If it has got slower and I am certain that my change should have made it faster I can blame the GC again. The thing is that if you optimize stuff and you allocate less objects the GC times will shift to some other location. If you are unlucky it will make your faster working code slower because you see now GCs at times where none were before. This is where the stuff does get really tricky. A safe escape hatch is to create a repro of the slow code in an isolated application so you can change things fast in a reliable manner. Then the normal profilers do also start working again. As Vance Morrison does point out it is much more complex to profile a system against the wall clock compared to optimize for CPU time. The reason is that for wall clock time analysis you need to understand how your system does work and which threads (if you have not one but perhaps 20) are causing a visible delay to the end user and which threads can wait a long time without affecting the user experience at all. • Build NAS for Windows and Linux network

  I have a spare PC and I would like to setup a NAS that is accessible from Windows and Linux. I would like to avoid using Windows as an OS and would like something like Ubuntu or FreeNAS. My only concern is I don't want to have to install special software on each client. Is there a way to use Ubuntu or FreeNAS and have Windows machines access the files with installing a client on each Windows box? UPDATE Thanks for the answers. I wish I could choose more than one. I will give FreeNAS a try and see how it goes. Thanks!
