• UppercuT and Mercurial (hg)

  I mentioned this awhile back on twitter, but UppercuT (UC) has support for Mercurial for versioning your assemblies. In the settings file, all you need to do it tell UC to use hg. When you build your assemblies, they will use the changeset number in the version, and in the informational version, you get the hash, just like you do when using Git. Pretty sweet.   Hi guys, Today I checked in a change on some code which turned out to be not working at all due to something rather stupid yet very crucial. I feel really bad about it and I hope I finally learn something from it. The stupid thing is, I've done these things before and I always tell myself, next time I won't be so stupid... Then it happens again and I feel even worse about it. I know you should keep your chin up and learn from your mistakes but here's the thing: I try to improve myself, I just don't see how I can prevent these things from happening. • Game Development In C Only. Is it possible?

  I am a first year college student in India and want to make a small game as a this semester project. I am quite good at C and am learning it rapidly but I wanted to ask if developing a game entirely in C(no C++ or C#m I'd love to use these but for college projects, we have strict requirements of using only C). What I am looking for is a simple top view driving game. It won't have anything fancy and even the visual things will be powered by simple characters. For example, user controlled car can be represented by ¦ and edges of road by series of |'s. What do you think?

• October 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  It seemed very ironic that the day we have a presentation on the architecture of building applications for Windows 8 the Surface tablet is opened for pre-order.  Tom Benton started the evening enlightening the attendees on the user experience for those who had not seen it yet.  He even passed around his table from last year’s Build conference for everyone to play with.  This was followed with a tour of the capabilities and structures that make up a Windows Store App on Windows 8.  Taking it to its conclusion, he rounded out the discussion by covering the certification and deployment process. • Are too many assertions code smell?

  I've really fallen in love with unit testing and TDD - I am test infected. However, unit testing is used for public methods. Sometimes though I do have to test some assumptions-assertions in private methods too, because some of them are "dangerous" and refactoring can't help further. (I know, testing frameworks allo testing private methods). So, It became a habit of mine that (almost always) the first and the last line of a private method are both assertions. I guess this couldn't be bad (right ??). However, I've noticed that I also tend to use assertions in public methods too (as in the private) just "to be sure". Could this be "testing duplication" since the public method assumpotions are tested from the unit testng framework? Could someone think of too many assertions as a code smell?

• Why is Google not indexing my forum?

  I have this web site that as you can see on the top right has is a "Forums" button that links to my forums. My problem is that if, for instance, I make a Google search "site:heliumscraper.com answers" I don't get any result, even though the word "answers" is in the forum's board index and it has been there for a few months already. I don't have a robots file. I also uploaded a sitemap to Google that contained the forum. I'm thinking the problem might be the fact that the only link from my main page to the forum opens in a new window. Could this be the problem?

• Solo .NET Programmer moving to a team

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication. Thanks for any and all input!

• Lost the system tray-bar and side panel dockbar disappears when touched

  I have complete confidence that this problem will be resolved by restarting, however, it seems very odd that it should disappear randomly during my session. To put it simply, I've lost the top tray-bar and the side panel disappears when the mouse moves within touch, however if it click and drag the window by the side it comes back (but disappears instantly when touched again (however I can still click on the buttons where they should be). The only guess I have as to why it's happened is a bug, or I've lost a file these GUI things depend on. This is a real pain as some applications now have lost the "File, Edit" menu items as a result of this.

  I own a Dell Latitude E6520 with an Intel CPU (Core i7 2720QM). After installing cpufrequtils, I get the following message : cpufrequtils 007: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009 Veuillez rapportez les erreurs et les bogues à [email protected], s'il vous plait. analyse du CPU 0 : **pas de pilotes cpufreq reconnu pour ce CPU** maximum transition latency: 4294.55 ms. In English : no cpufreq pilot found for this CPU. Thus my CPU runs always at full speed (2,2 GHz) which consume the battery and shorten its life. I don't either know how to activate turbo mode. • How to get useful feedback/bug reports from users

  I'm sure most webmasters have recived a mail like this: Creating [insert item here] is not working! When you check it out there is no general problem with the function but rather the user has discovered an edge case. Almost every mail I get is like this and in the long run it gets a bit annoying to always have to ask the user for more information. Is there anything I can do to get my users provide more useful feedback? Right now I have a mailto: for the webmaster mail in the page footer. I was thinking of changing this so that they have to report through a form on the site. Anyone got any experience with this? Do you get better/more reports by having a feedback form instead of giving the users the email?

• Any enlightenment for understanding Object Oriented Programming? [closed]

  I studied computer science near the end of 1980s, and wasn't taught OOP that formally. With Pascal or C, when I understand the top-down design of functions, and the idea of black box, then everything just seem to make sense, as if there is a "oh I get it!" -- some kind of totally getting it and enlightenment feeling. But with OOP, all I know was the mechanics: the class, instance, method, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation. It was like, I knew all the "this is how it is", but never had the feeling of "I totally get it", the enlightened feeling. Would somebody be able to describe it, or point to a chapter in some book or paper which talks about OOP so that the reader can feel: "I totally get it!" on OOP?

• Backup systems config files

  I'm planning on installing nVidia proprietary drivers on my Ubuntu 10.10. Historically this always ends-up with me being left with no graphical interface. No ability to revert - and reinstalling the whole system. So now, before trying this anew, I wish to backup all relevant config files. I'll try 1 or 2 methods. I'll list each one's commands. I'll appreciate if anyone can tell me how to backup the relevant file, or what's the reverse of this operation. 10x, David Method I - as described here: apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau As described in this answer: edit /etc/default/grub and add the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0" sudo update-grub Reboot Install original drivers downloaded from nVidia site.
