• Cross Browser Testing on Virtual Machines - Issues?

- by codemate2112
I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

• How to limit choice field options based on another choice field in django admin

- by umnik700
I have the following models: class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=40) class Item(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=40) category = models.ForeignKey(Category) class Demo(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=40) category = models.ForeignKey(Category) item = models.ForeignKey(Item) In the admin interface when creating a new Demo, after user picks category from the dropdown, I would like to limit the number of choices in the "items" drop-down. If user selects another category then the item choices should update accordingly. I would like to limit item choices right on the client, before it even hits the form validation on the server. This is for usability, because the list of items could be 1000+ being able to narrow it down by category would help to make it more manageable. Is there a "django-way" of doing it or is custom JavaScript the only option here?

• How do I get the ID or reference of the listview row I am clicking a checkbox in?

- by danielea
I have an ASP.NET 2.0 ListView control (aka:parent) and configured inside this ListView I have another ListView (aka:child). For each row the parent has there is potentially a child ListView control which can have 1-3 rows. Each row has two checkboxes (a select checkbox and a deny checkbox). I need to process these checkboxes in JavaScript so that if one select is chosen on any of the rows all other select checkboxes are unchecked AND the deny checkbox for that row only is unchecked. The rows which were NOT selected CAN have the deny checkboxes checked. What is the best approach to this?

• Jquery Event onChange for Div

- by David
I have a page with the following two divs:

Is there any way that I can make the "postSearchOptions" div appear when the "searchResults" div is updated by an AJAX call? I don't control the AJAX calls and I want to detect any change in the "searchResults" div. I tried writing the following JQuery code, but then realized that it requires Jquery 1.4 and I only have 1.3: $("#searchResults").live("change", function() { $(".postSearchOptions").css("display", "inline"); }); Is there any way to catch the event of the searchResults div changing using either standard JavaScript or Jquery 1.3? Thanks!

• Add client-side events to ASP.Net custom control at runtime

- by nw
I'm building an ASP.net custom control that implements IScriptControl. I would like other users of my control to be able to assign client-side event handlers to the control. Unfortunately the JS generated by IScriptControl is always injected at the very bottom of the rendered page (see below), so any attempt to assign an event handler in the ASPX page fails because the code executes too early. ... What's the right way to assign an event handler to the instantiated control upon page load?

• simple photo viewer

- by Blaise
Hi, I am fairly new to all this. I am trying to make a simple photo viewer with javascript or anything easy to alter. I just want a next and prev. button to take you between photos. Click next and next photo shows. Just that simple. I have a flash version but I would like to avoid using flash. I've been doing it the long way by making multiple pages, one for each photo and a button that repeats. I know there must be a better way but I just can't seem to figure it out. Please help

• Programmaticaly grabbing text from a web page that is dynamically generated.

- by bstullkid
There is a website I am trying to pull information from in perl, however the section of the page I need is being generated using javascript so all you see in the source is

I need to somehow pull out the contents of that div and save it to a file using perl/proxies/whatever. e.g. the information I want to save would be document.getElementById('results').innerHTML; I am not sure if this is possible or if anyone had any ideas or a way to do this. I was using a lynx source dump for other pages but since I cant straight forward screen scrape this page I came here to ask about it! If anyone is interested, the page is http://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=left_nav&clkval=pattern_file&regs=NABU and the info I am trying to get is the row about the ConsumerOPR

• I have a bunch of divs floated left, lined up in columns with different heights. They dont create a

- by Roeland
Hey guys, I am trying to create a grid like system with div's with content floated left. The problem is that the height of each div is not static since the content is different in each one. Since the height is different.. things get outta whack if one is taller then another in one row. Is there some sort of css way or js (prefer javascript) way to get around this. I really want to avoid setting large heights on the divs to get them to line up. You can see the example here: http://www.foreclosurejournalinc.com/index.php?option=com_hotproperty&view=type&id=1

• iframe form not submitting in IE7

- by Lauren
For some reason I can submit the form data on this Review and Submit page here in Chrome and FF but not IE7: https://checkout.netsuite.com/s.nl?c=659197&n=1&sc=4&category=confirm Email:[email protected] Pass:test03 Click on "here" where it says "Your Third Party Shipper Numbers (To enter one, click here.)" I removed my javascript that automatically refreshes the page to make sure that wasn't refreshing before anything was submitted somehow. Could the difference in IE7 have to do with the fact that the domain of the form (forms.netsuite.com) is different than the domain of the parent page(checkout.netsuite.com) and it's being submitted over HTTPS?

• convert xml.documentElement.getElementsByTagName("marker")[index].getAttribute(temp) to string in ja

- by user324884
I am parsing xml file in javascript and after that want to cancatenate all the the data into string. but failing to do the same and it is returning undefined. GDownloadUrl("./include/dataemp2.xml", function(data) { var xml = GXml.parse(data); markers = xml.documentElement.getElementsByTagName("marker"); for(var t=0;t<18;t++) { var temp= markers[index].getAttribute("address"); html = html + temp; } }); it is returning as undefined because temp is not concatenating in "html"; whereas when i do this like html = html +markers[index].getAttribute("address"); it is giving me expected output;

• How do you build an Oa_zones array in to utitlize OpenX full page invocation in Rails?

- by johnml
I'm serving ads using OpenX within Rails. To correctly use the OpenX full page invocation you need to set Oa_zones[] array, otherwise all available ads are requested (but will never be used). These are the necessary pieces: Build an array of zones. Ideally zones could be added in any partial, so working with this array needs to be accessible throughout the view. Output full page invocation link ie. delivery/spcjs.php?id=1&block=1 Output zones The problem is, the full page invocation script can't be loaded until the zone array is built (and instantiated in JavaScript). At the same time, the zone array can't be built until the entire view has been rendered.

• Choosing a plotting library for web/browser application

- by Goro
Hello, I am looking for a plotting/graphing library (mostly to do line plots) for my application. I have been looking at JavaScript APIs (like Google's) but I found them to be slowing down things at client side (I am plotting a quite large number of points). I also found that with client-side libraries, the performance was quite varied depending on the user's computer. With moving to a server-side library I would cut down on this variance, and would have more control over data flow (my data is in a MySQL database). I have then looked at some PHP-based plotting libraries, but a lot of them seem to be "forgotten" (no new version for years). I have been eying pChart, but it has not had an update in almost two years. First, what would you recommend: server-side or client-side approach? Second, what library would you recommend. Paid libraries are definitely an option, as I don't mind paying for quality software that would cut down on my development time. Thanks,

• Class as an Event Observer

- by emi
I want to do something like this... var Color = Class.create({ initialize: function() { this._color = "white"; this.observe("evt: colorChanged", this.colorChanged.bind(this)); }, changeColor: function(color) { this._color = color; this.fire("evt: colorChanged"); }, colorChanged: function(event) { alert("You change my color!"); } }); var a = new Color().changeColor("blue"); Why the colorChange custom event will never be dispatched and I need to use, instead of this, a DOM element like document.observe? In my code I'd like to know which class dispatches the event using event.target and I can't if I must use document or some other DOM element. :( I've been working in Actionscript 3 and that's the methodology I learned to work with custom events in classes. What about Javascript?

• Display message when user leaves site

- by Brian Rasmusson
Hi, I'm looking for a way to display a message to the user if he leaves my site after only viewing one page. I found this (http://www.pgrs.net/2008/1/30/popup-when-leaving-website) clever solution, but it has a few flaws: staying_in_site = false; Event.observe(document.body, 'click', function(event) { if (Event.element(event).tagName == 'A') { staying_in_site = true; } }); window.onunload = popup; function popup() { if(staying_in_site) { return; } alert('I see you are leaving the site'); } It displays the message also when refreshing the page or using the back button. Do you know a better solution or how to fix it in the above code? I'm no javascript master :) My intention is to add the code on very specific landing pages only, and display the message when people leave the page without downloading my trial software or reading other pages on my site.

• What would make offsetParent null?

- by Brian Ramsay
I am trying to do positioning in JavaScript. I am using a cumulative position function based on the classic quirksmode function that sums offsetTop and offsetLeft for each offsetParent until the top node. However, I am running into an issue where the element I'm interested in has no offsetParent in Firefox. In IE offsetParent exists, but offsetTop and offsetLeft all sum up to 0, so it has the same problem in effect as in Firefox. What would cause an element that is clearly visible and usable on the screen to not have an offsetParent? Or, more practically, how can I find the position of this element in order to place a drop-down beneath it?

• Dynamic Spacer in ReportLab

- by ptikobj
I'm automatically generating a PDF-file with Platypus that has dynamic content. This means that it might happen that the length of the text content (which is directly at the bottom of the pdf-file) may vary. However, it might happen that a page break is done in cases where the content is too long. This is because i use a "static" spacer: s = Spacer(width=0, height=23.5*cm) as i always want to have only one page, I somehow need to dynamically set the height of the Spacer, so that it takes the "rest" of the space that is on the page as its height. Now, how do i get the "rest" of height that is left on my page?

• XMLHttpRequest inside an object: how to keep the reference to "this"

- by Julien
I make some Ajax calls from inside a javascript object.: myObject.prototye = { ajax: function() { this.foo = 1; var req = new XMLHttpRequest(); req.open('GET', url, true); req.onreadystatechange = function (aEvt) { if (req.readyState == 4) { if(req.status == 200) { alert(this.foo); // reference to this is lost } } } }; Inside the onreadystatechange function, this does not refer to the main object anymore, so I don't have access to this.foo. Ho can I keep the reference to the main object inside XMLHttpRequest events?

• How can I get jQuery to perform a synchronous, rather than asynchronous, AJAX request?

- by Artem Tikhomirov
Hello. I have a javascript widget witch provides standard extension points. One of them is the beforecreate function. It should return false to prevent an item from being created. I've added an AJAX call into this function using jQuery: beforecreate: function(node, targetNode, type,to) { jQuery.get('http://example.com/catalog/create/' + targetNode.id + '?name=' + encode(to.inp[0].value), function(result) { if(result.isOk == false) alert(result.message); }); } But I want to prevent my widget from creating the item, so I should return false in the mother-function, not in the callback. Is there any way to perform a synchronized AJAX request using jQuery or any other API? Thanks.

• debugging with internet explorer

- by baiano
I have some code that I thought I had written so that it would play nice on IE. But apparently it does not. I use IE8 for my testing and get quite frustrated with the built-in debugging 'tool'. I found that firebug has a javascript tool that debugs for IE but I have to click it for every page, wait for it to load and then test my script. Is there a way to make IE ALWAYS load the firebug .js file? I tried searching for way to set up a custom header file for my IE installation but was unsuccessful. Is there another tool out there that would be better/easier to use? Another way to test scripts for IE compatibility?

• Using a bookmarklet to track a package

- by user307558
I'm trying to write a bookmarklet that tracks a package in the mail. First it checks to see if the tracking page is open, if not it opens it in a new tab, and then sets the value of the form to the tracking number. Finally, it submits the form. What I'm so far unable to do is set the value of the form in the case where the bookmarklet opens up a new tab. Here's what I have: javascript: (function(){ var trackingNumber = "/*tracking number*/"; var a = document.forms.trackingForm; if ('http://fedex.com/Tracking' == document.location) { trackingForm.trackNbrs.value = trackingNumber; document.forms.trackingForm.submit(); } else { window.open('http://fedex.com/Tracking'); this.window.onload = function(){ //This seems to be the problem trackingForm.trackNbrs.value = trackingNumber; onload(document.forms.trackingForm.submit()); } } })(); Any ideas?

• How to get this.grandparent() functionality in Mootools?

- by RyOnLife
I have built a class in Mootools and extended it twice, such that there is a grandparent, parent, and child relationship: var SomeClass1 = new Class({ initialize: function() { // Code }, doSomething: function() { // Code } }); var SomeClass2 = new Class({ Extends: SomeClass1, initialize: function() { this.parent(); }, doSomething: function() { this.parent(); // Some code I don't want to run from Class3 } }); var SomeClass3 = new Class({ Extends: SomeClass2, initialize: function() { this.parent(); }, doSomething: function() { this.grandParent(); } }); From Class3, the child, I need call the doSomething() method from Class1, the grandparent, without executing any code in Class2#doSomething(), the parent. What I need is a grandParent() method to complement the Mootools parent(), but it appears that one does not exist. What's the best way to accomplish this in either Mootools or pure JavaScript? Thanks.

• Encode/compress sequence of repeating integers

- by Alex
Hey there! I have very long integer sequences that look like this (arbitrary length!): 0000000001110002220033333 Now I need some algorithm to convert this string into something compressed like a9b3a3c3a2d5 Which means "a 9 times, then b 3 times, then a 3 times" and so on, where "a" stands for 0, "b" for 1, "c" for 2 and "d" for 3. How would you do that? So far nothing suitable came to my mind, and I had no luck with google because I didn't really know what to search for. What is this kind of encoding / compression called? PS: I am going to do the encoding with PHP, and the decoding in JavaScript.

• I want to query whitepages.com 4,000 times, how to save the results?

- by John Corbin
I have an old customer list of 4,000 businesses. I want to determine if the phone numbers associated with each listing are still working (and therefore the business is probably still open). I can put each number in whitepages.com and check them one by one... but want to automate the results. I have looked at their API and can't digest it. I can form the correct query URL, but trying things like cURL -O doesn't work. I have access to Mac tools, Unix tools, and could try various javascript stuff if anyone could point me in the right direction... would even pay. Help? Thx
