• Problems with both LightDM and GDM using DisplayLink USB monitor

  When I use LightDM, it will auto-login to desktop just fine. The only problem is Compiz doesn't work, and menus don't work. I can't right-click the desktop, and I can't select program menus in the top bar (I.e clicking "File" does nothing). When I use GDM, I only get a blank blue screen and the mouse cursor. I can't Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart, but I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch modes. I don't think it's auto-logging me in, but I'm not sure. It plays the login screen noise. Will update with more information when I get home! EDIT: Okay, so I did a fresh install, just to ensure I hadn't borked something playing in the console. I reconfigured my setup as I did before, with the same results. Here's what I followed. The only difference is that instead of setting "vga=normal nomodeset" I set "GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX = text". Also I only have the DisplayLink monitor configured in my xorg.conf file. At this point I'm using the open radeon driver, although I used the proprietary ati driver before. I'm not sure if I'm having a problem with: - X configuration - Graphics driver - DisplayLink driver - Unity - LightDM - Compiz - Or something else The resolution of the monitor is 800x480, 16bit. I tried setting a larger virtual resolution of 1200x720 (because the real resolution is lower than the recommended resolution), but it causes Ubuntu to boot into low graphics mode. When I get home I'm going to install the fglrx driver and see if it enables virtual resolutions, which may further enable my window manager to function properly.

• How do I choose a package format for Linux software distribution?

  We have a Java-based application that, to date, we've been distributing as a tarball with instructions for deploying. It's mostly self-contained so deployment is fairly straight-forward: Untar on the disk you'd like it to live on; Make sure Java is in your path and a suitable distro and version; Verify ownership and group on all the files Start up the server processes with our start script If the user wants to get in to start-on-boot stuff with SysV we have some written instructions and a template init file for it in our tarball. We'd like to make this installation process a little more seamless; take care of the permissions and the init script deployment. We're also going to start bundling our own JRE with the application so that we're mostly free of external dependencies. The question we're faced with now is: how do we pick a package format for distribution? Is RPM the standard? Can all package management tools deal with it now? Our clients primarily run RHEL and CentOS, but we do have some using SuSE and even Debian. If we can pick a distro-agnostic format we'd prefer that. What about a self-extracting shell script? Something akin to how Java is distributed. If we're dependency-free would the self-extracting script be sufficient? What features or conveniences would we lose out on going with the script versus a proper package format meant for use by a package manager?

  Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface.   The Internet Explorer 9.0 team just posted about Pirates love Daises. This is a showcase game for the power of HTML 5 running inside IE 9.0 – and the author has done a fantastic job (you can get more details from Grant’s blog post). A game developer is an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) – a B2C  ISV. In my role I don’t (typically) work with B2C ISVs, hence a reasonable question is “Why blog about it?”. I think applications like this demonstrate the power of HTML 5 and IE9 for delivering really rich user experiences which have the promise of working cross browser and cross platform - in the future as HTML5 capable browsers become the norm. • Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? These error reports are received: Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started.To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392} I installed the extension pack, no change in result. I have added myself as user, but the error report says user must be added, when I redo add user, it says user is already added. The following outputs were also received:   Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Nuwe skelm. Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found! I cannot access the USB 2.0 setting to disable it. Where do I go from here, please?

• Sharing A Stage: JDeveloper/ADF & NetBeans/Java EE 6?

  A highlight for me during last week's Oracle Developer Day in Romania (which I blogged about here) was meeting Jernej Kaše (who is from Slovenia, just like my philosopher hero Slavoj Žižek), who is an Oracle Fusion Middleware evangelist. At the conference, while I was presenting NetBeans and Java EE 6 in one room, Jernej was presenting JDeveloper and ADF in another room. The application he created looks as follows, i.e., a realistic CRUD app, with a master/detail view, a search feature, and validation: In a conversation during a break, we started imagining a scenario where the two of us would be on the same stage, taking turns talking about NetBeans/Java EE and JDeveloper/ADF. In that way, attendees at a conference wouldn't need to choose which of the two topics to attend, because they'd be handled in the same session, with the session possibly being longer so that sufficient time could be spent on the respective technologies. (The JDeveloper/ADF session would then not be competing with the NetBeans/Java EE 6 session, since they'd be handled simultaneously.) The session would focus on the similarities/differences between the two respective tools/solutions, which would be extremely interesting and also unique. The crucial question in making this kind of co-presentation possible is whether (and how quickly) an application such as the one created above with JDeveloper/ADF could be created with NetBeans/Java EE 6. The NetBeans/Java EE 6 story is extremely strong on the model and controler levels, but less strong on the view layer. Though there are choices between using PrimeFaces, RichFaces, and IceFaces, that support is quite limited in the absence of a visual designer or of other specific tools (e.g., code generators to generate snippets of PrimeFaces) connected to JSF component libraries. However, it so happens that in recent months we at NetBeans have established really good connections with the PrimeFaces team (more about that another time). So I asked them what it would take to write the above UI in PrimeFaces. The PrimeFaces team were very helpful. They sent me the following screenshot, which is of the UI they created in PrimeFaces, reproducing the ADF screenshot above: Of course, the above is purely the UI layer, there's no EJB and entity classes and data connection hooked into it yet. So there's not much help for creating such a UI right now. I don't believe that a visual designer is mandatory to create the above. A few code generators and file templates could do the job too. And I'm looking forward to seeing those kinds of tools for PrimeFaces, as well as other JSF component libraries, appearing in NetBeans IDE in upcoming releases. A related option would be for the NetBeans generated CRUD app to include the option of having a master/detail view, as well as the option of having a search feature, i.e., the application generators would provide the option of having additional features typical in Java enterprise apps. In the absence of such tools, there still is room, I believe, for NetBeans/Java EE and JDeveloper/ADF sharing a stage at a conference. The above file would have been prepared up front and the presenter would state that fact. The UI layer is only one aspect of a Java EE 6 application, so that the presenter would have ample other features to show (i.e., the entity class generation, the tools for working with servlets, with session beans, etc) prior to getting to the point where the statement would be made: "On the UI layer, I have prepared this Facelets file, which I will now show you can be connected to the lower layers of the application as follows." At that point, the session beans could be hooked into the Facelets file, the file would be saved, the browser refreshed, and then the whole application would work exactly as the ADF application does. I would like to clarify that the 'infrastructure' updates (OS, Firmware, ILOM, etc) will require a  short downtime of the ODA while it is applied.  When you update the grid infrastructure (--gi), the appliance manager verifies that the infrastructure was updated so you cannot just patch the GI without first updating the infrastructure. The high level update patch steps include (but not limited to): Download patch update to your ODA The --infra (infrastructure) is updated and ODA Databases are down and the ODA is/may be rebooted ODA and GI/Databases are restarted Issue the command to update the Grid Infrastructure/databases (The order of the steps are completed automatically and you cannot control when the nodes are brought up and down during the patching) Node 1 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 1 -- patch GI/database Node 1 -- bring up databases and GI Node 2 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 2 -- patch GI/database Node 2 -- bring up databases and GI A replay from Friday's with Sohan on the 2.4 release can be found here.  The PDF of the presentation is here.   If you have large files in a content source that is being indexed by Sharepoint you might run into the following error message: “The file reached the maximum download limit. Check that the full text of the document can be meaningfully crawled.” This is usually caused because SharePoint’s MaxDownloadSize setting is set lower than the size of the file you are attempting to index. You can increase this value, restart the service then kick off a full crawl in order to fix this issue, but SharePoint 2007 and 2010 have different methods for accomplishing this task.   Sharepoint 2007 Open up the Registry editor and increase the MaxDownloadSize value to a number (in MB) higher than the largest file being indexed. You can find this at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager After you increase the size, cycle the search service and kick off a full crawl of the content source in question.   Sharepoint 2010 With SharePoint 2010 you can use PowerShell via the Sharepoint 2010 Console in order to change the MaxDownloadSize. • Install Adobe AIR on Ubuntu/Linux

  Since quite some time Adobe Technologies released the Linux version of Adobe AIR to bring web applications and widgets to your desktop. Installing new applications on a Linux system is not always as easy as switching the computer on. The following instructions might be helpful to install Adobe AIR on any Linux system. First of all, get the latest installer of Adobe AIR from http://get.adobe.com/air/ - as of writing this article the file name is AdobeAIRInstaller.bin. Save the download in your preferred folder. Now, there are two ways to run the installer - visual style or console style. Visual Installation Launch your favorite or standard file manager like thunar or nautilus and browse to the folder where the AdobeAIRInstaller.bin has been saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties' in the context menu Set 'Execute' permissions and confirm modifications with OK Rename file into AdobeAIRInstaller Double click and follow the instructions Using the console Open a terminal like xterm Change into the directory where you stored the download Run this command:[code]chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] Now run this command:[code]sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] The normal installer will open, install it. From now whenever you download a .air file, just double click it and it will be installed. Troubleshooting In case that the installation does not start properly, try to install via console. • Insufficient permissions within Eclipse when installed via synaptic in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Eclipse via the Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (more details on footer). However, from within Eclipse, I lack sufficient permissions to perform upgrades on my package and add-ons. I'm a recovering Windows user, and while I have a couple of years Ubuntu experience, I am unfamiliar with the command-line and mainly interact through the packaged GUI. Specifically, I am trying to install the upgrade for Eclipse CVS Clientorg.eclipse.cvs.feature.group1.3.100.v20110520-0800-7B78FHl9VF7BD7KBM4GP9C I am tracking the varying installation advice on a similar question eclipse install: Gaurav Butola Basically, the most current upgrades are available directly from eclipse?... But at some point I remember reading that the latest version of eclipse had been designed for the previous LTS of Ubuntu - I don't know if that is still true. I have read about the vulnerabilities of Java 6, and so I have gone with Open Java 7 openjdk-amd64 (if that has any relevance to which Eclipse package and installation method I choose). But I'm not crazy about the idea of creating a gksudo link in the sidebar launcher. I don't know enough about chown to use it - if that's even appropriate (I don't want stray java escaping from Eclipse and connecting to SkyNet). Another possible solution that I foresee is modifying my user's group memberships/privileges on the file system as a whole. The only other information that I think might be relevant is that I notice that Synaptic installed all of the files into /usr/ instead of /opt/ like I have seen recommended. So should I be changing ownership, reinstalling using a non-Synaptic method, or what? Any advice is greatly appreciated. • Can I use access used by Visual Basic for building a database [on hold]

  I am the only programmer where I work (summer job) and I am a student with only a few years of programming experience. So I was asked to build a database and I am very excited about this project because hopefully I can learn a lot from this. Using this database my manager is supposed to be able to assign work (dealing with businesses) to different people within the company using an interface (all workers have a shared drive). When workers are done with that paperwork related to the business, they can check off that its done, add comments at the bottom of the interface, and then move on to the next business. The only experience I've had with databases is some querying with SQL, and I've built GUI interfaces with JAVA. The information on the interface will be populated from Excel so workers know what businesses they are dealing with. I've done some research and I believe the best way to build this would be building a GUI using Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic) first, then figuring out a way to populate the Interface from Excel. Also because the data is pretty straight forward and not complicated I will be using MS Access to store and track the database. I know this won't be easy, but for all you geniuses out there, is this on the right path? Thanks.
