• Partially parse C++ for a domain-specific language

  I would like to create a domain specific language as an augmented-C++ language. I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases. Do you know about similar projects? And if you attempted to do so, what tools would you use? What would be the main pitfalls? Would you have recommendations in term of syntax?

• What workflow should I use for JavaScript editing?

  Warning: I have very little JavsScript experience. In my past programming experience, I usually have a standalone interpreter/compiler, a text editor and a command line to compile/run my software or my tests (I love test driven development). I really like it this way, since I have the feeling of being in complete control over the tools. However, editing JavaScript I need to put statements in a text file , open my web browser and click on reload. I don't feel comfortable with it, as I cannot really see what is going on (besides some alert boxes). Can you suggest me (I'm on a Mac) another workflow? Perhaps with a debugger? Is there a standalone JavaScript interpreter?

• Simple performance testing tool in C#?

  Hi, At first -I need to do it as my university project so I am not interested in using existing tools. I would like to know whether it is even possible to write a very simple tool that I could use for performance testing of web applications. It would only record actions (I do not know, maybe just packet sniffering?) and then replay. However I have basic idea (record packets on port 80 and sending them again), I do not know how to measure time for each transaction as they are not differentiated. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

• How to research unmanaged memory leaks in .NET?

  I have a WCF service running over MSMQ. Memory gradually increases over time, indicating that there is some sort of memory leak. I ran the service locally and monitored some counters using PerfMon. Total CLR memory managed heap bytes remains relatively constant, while the process' private bytes increases over time. This leads me to believe that there is some sort of unmanaged memory leak. Assuming that unmanaged memory leak is the issue, how do I address the issue? Are there any tools I could use to give me hints as to what is causing the unmanaged memory leak? Also, all my service is doing is reading from the transactional queue and writing to a database, all as part of a DTC transaction (handled under the hood by requiring a transaction on the service contract). I am not doing anything explicitly with COM or DllImports. Thanks in advance!

• How to connect android application running on a device to a local web application?

  I have my droid device connected through USB and using Eclipse for debugging my application running on the device. Everything is fine, except my application needs to connect to a web application running on the same host computer (Windows XP, IE). The web address on the IE was "http://local:4566/MyApp/". I tried to set my android app to "http://10.0.2.2:4566/MyApp", but no luck. The android app's connection simply times out. The document under http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html says that the ip address may be different for devices (see Network Address Space section) but no further details on how to find that. Question is, how to I connect to a local web application running on my host computer (windows xp) from an Android application connected through USB running debug under Eclipse? • How to identify deadlock conditions in a third-party application?

  I am using a third-party application to handle batch CD audio extraction via multiple FireWire attached devices, but the application frequently (though non-deterministically) hangs during the extraction. I suspect that the multithreaded application is deadlocking over some shared resource. The developer, however, suspects the problem lies elsewhere but is not addressing the problem at this time. I would like to be able to do some legwork on my end to a) prove the condition exists and b) ideally point him in the right direction. The problems: while I used to be a programmer, it's been awhile and I need to shake off the dust (last work I did was back in '99 and it was under Solaris, while the application runs under XP). Rather than there being a dearth of information online, there's almost too much to digest. Are there any suggested guides or tutorials that might help me get back up to speed sufficient enough to help identify and/or diagnose the deadlock, or are there tools or approaches that I should study up on to aid me in my task?   I'm compiling using android tools without eclipse. I compile launching "ant debug" from command line. I have found many many instructions around the web about how to remove with annoying warning, but I haven't been able to make any of them work. I've tried -D option, I've tried randomly tweaking build.* files, I've tried exporting an environment variable... nothing. I guess some of these methods just don't work, and some others would work but I've been doing them incorrectly. Anything is possible and I can't stand it any more: any advice on how to do it?

• change label text from a VB6 binary (not source code)

  Hi, we have a VB6 binary executable that comes with no source code. And we need to change the label text for that VB6 application from "AAA" to "BBB". Is there any way or tools that can do that? The closest tool I can find right now is microsoft UISpy, it can read all the other elements but not the label. I hope there is a tool that can change the resource in the .exe so that the label "AAA" will read "BBB". Or is it possible to write a wrapper application, it will launch the .exe, examine the application screen for "AAA" and change that to "BBB"? Thank you for your help!

• gcc compiled binaries w/different sizes?

  If the same code is built at different times w/gcc, the resulting binary will have different contents. OK, I'm not wild about that, but that's what it is. However, I've recently run into a situation where the same code, built with the same version of gcc, is generating a binary with a different size than a prior build (by about 1900 bytes). Does anyone have any idea what may be causing either of these situations? Is this some kind of ELF issue? Are there any tools out there (other than ldd) that can be used to dump contents of binaries to see what exactly is different? Thanks in advance.

• html - how do I make a page load in a new tab in IE8?

  My website works in Firefox - pages on the site load in the current tab, and links off site load a new tab. IE8 won't behave: target="_blank" opens a whole new window; the other options, _self _top _parent, all open the page in the current tab. I have Firefox set to "Open new windows in a new tab." The links to pages on my site all have target="_self" and Firefox keeps these in the current tab. On the external links I don't have a target set (I added _blank to see if it fixed IE8, and doing that didn't affect Firefox). I can't find an equivalent setting in IE8. Tools-Internet Options-General-Tabs/Settings has an enable tabs box, and a sub-option to automatically switch to newly opened tabs. Is there some html that will work? An IE8 setting I'm missing? Any help appreciated.

  Hi, I tried to turn on the Activity Monitor using SQL Server 2008 Management Studio (SSMS) through the options window of the application (Tools | Options | Environment | General | At Startup). I restarted SSMS and I am getting the following message: "This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition version 8.00.2249." I need to be able to monitor the processes and activities inside the database since I am investigating a particular application which takes a lot of time in its database data retrieval access and I am thinking it may be due to some locks or some processes. • Get name of property as a string

  I'm trying to improve the maintainability of some code involving reflection. The app has a .NET Remoting interface exposing (among other things) a method called Execute for accessing parts of the app not included in its published remote interface. Here is how the app designates properties (a static one in this example) which are meant to be accessible via Execute: RemoteMgr.ExposeProperty("SomeSecret", typeof(SomeClass), "SomeProperty"); So a remote user could call: string response = remoteObject.Execute("SomeSecret"); and the app would use reflection to find SomeClass.SomeProperty and return its value as a string. Unfortunately, if someone renames SomeProperty and forgets to change the 3rd parm of ExposeProperty(), it breaks this mechanism. I need to the equivalent of: SomeClass.SomeProperty.GetTheNameOfThisPropertyAsAString() to use as the 3rd parm in ExposeProperty so refactoring tools would take care of renames.   Hi, In my sql database I have tables with name which include underscores, for readability. Just to try and make it clearer see below: TableFoo TableFoo_TableBah Where TableFoo has a key linking to TableFoo_TableBah, this is done so you can quickly see what the table TableBah relates to. I have used this naming convention before with tools such as CodeSmith which give the option to remove the underscores, but I cannot see how to do this in Entity Framework 4. Is there a way to do this, or am I stuck with either renaming my tables or having objets such as TableFoo_TableBah? Thanks,

  I am developing a C++ application on Ubuntu. The application consists of several modules, each with its makefile. I want to have a customised command line build process that does the following: checks code out from a repository (for specified branch/tag) builds the app (release or debug as specified) logs any errors etc I am too lazy to learn Perl (I tried before, but cant seem to get my head around it). • Border-radius bug on <a> in IE9

  Seeing that <div> elements render border/border-radius correctly, but any <a> or <button> that has a background, border and border-radius set shows the background color or image as a square, and only the border is round. • ShapeFile with Z Co-ordinates

  I have 3 shapefiles, two of them wihtout the Z Co-ordinates elevation but 1 of them has a Z co-ordinate elevation. I can load two ShapeFiles into my SQL Server Database which does not have Z Co-ordinates. But I am having issue loading the Z Co-ordinate file into the database. I have been reading different forums and got a suggestion that I need to trim the Z coordinates(chnage 3D to 2D) to load into the database. I was just wondering how can I achieve this? • What's a very easy C++ profiler (VC++)?

  I've used a few profilers in the past and never found them particularly easy. Maybe I picked bad ones, maybe I didn't really know what I was expecting! But I'd like to know if there are any 'standard' profilers which simply drop in and work? I don't believe I need massively fine-detailed reports, just to pick up major black-spots. Ease of use is more important to me at this point. It's VC++ 2008 we're using (I run standard edition personally). I don't suppose there are any tools in the IDE for this, I can't see any from looking at the main menus?

  Hello all, I've been working with Apache's Velocity engine and a custom template. The thing is, that I haven't been able to generate a String with the corresponding line breaks. I tried almost everything that I found, such as using $esc.n and $esc.newline (I'm already using escape tools on my project) but it seems that the version I'm currently using doesn't support it (1.4), checked if putting '\n', '\\n' and even '\\\n' would work, but same thing. The Java platform anyway, still looked like it had some promise to it: Groovy and Grails. Why does all of this seem to be going the way of the dodo lately? So, in the following situation, I create a feature branch, and there are commits to the trunk E---F---G Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk I'm looking for a tool which copies the trunk, and applies the commits one by one, letting me resolve any conflicts if any exist - but each commit retains the same commit message, and is still a separate commit. E'---F'---G' Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk So commit E' will be a commit with the same changes as E, except in the case of E causing a conflict, in which case E' will differ from E in that E' has the conflicts resolved, and the same commit message as E. I'm looking for this as it helps in keeping branches up to date with trunk - the svnmerge.py / mergeinfo way does not help, as you still need to resolve your changes when you merge back to trunk.

  Task: I have a camera mounted on the end of our assembly line, which captures images of produced items. Let's for example say, that we produce tickets (with some text and pictures on them). So every produced ticket is photographed and saved to disk as image. Now I would like to check these saved images for anomalies (i.e. compare them to an image (a template), which is OK). So if there is a problem with a ticket on our assembly line (missing picture, a stain,...), my application should find it (because its image differs too much from my template). Question: What is the easiest way to compare pictures and find differences between them? Do I need to write my own methods, or can I use existing ones? It would be great if I just set a tolerance value (i.e. images can differ for 1%), put both images in a function and get a return value of true or false :) Tools: C# or VB.NET, Emgu.CV (.NET wrapper for OpenCV) or something similar
