• New Year's Resolutions and Keeping in Touch in 2011

  The run-up to Oracle OpenWorld 2010 San Francisco--and the launch of Fusion Applications--was a busy time for many of us working on the applications business at Oracle. The great news was that the Oracle Applications general sessions, sessions, demogrounds and other programs were very well attended and well received. Unfortunately, for this blog, the work wasn't done there. Yes, there haven't been many additional blog entries since the previous one, which one industry analyst told us "That's a good post!" That being said, our New Year's Resolution is to blog more frequently about what's been keeping us busy since Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco. • Oracle is a Leader again in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for E-commerce

  Although e-commerce represents only 10% of the typical brick-and-mortar retailer’s sales, that percentage continues to climb.  So it’s no wonder that many retailers are considering the purchase of new e-commerce platforms to provide a commerce experience that keeps customers coming back.  And once again, Oracle and IBM lead the pack, identified as leaders in Gartner’s 2013 Magic Quadrant for E-Commerce along with hybris.  Many retailers are realizing the need to support Commerce Anywhere, allowing customers to interact with brands on their own terms.  Gartner reinforces this trend saying, “E-commerce is moving beyond just an online selling channel to integrated platforms delivering a unified customer experience. Traditionally, most organizations have been investing in the online channels with the objective of driving additional sales. However, customers increasingly are expecting a seamless buying experience across all channels, and e-commerce is a critical part of this evolution since it is a point where other channels are integrating to synchronize the customer experience across channels." Oracle saw this trend coming and acquired ATG, FatWire, and Endeca, all leaders in their respective markets, starting back in 2010.  The assets have been combined as Oracle Commerce and represent a comprehensive solution for retailers to sell via the Web while offering the best customer experience possible.  Retailers like JCPenney, American Apparel, and Kohl’s have recently licensed Oracle Commerce as part of their transformations. In the next two years we’ll begin to see more separation between the retailers that have a Commerce Anywhere strategy, and those that continue to flail with separate channels.  Integrating online and offline commerce, along with mobile and social aspects are becoming crucial to success in the industry.

• Transferring FSMO roles over vpn

  I have a server located at one of our offices which is quite old and is due to be upgraded soon, this server holds the FSMO roles, I have another server in another office, both are DC's in the same domain and both are replicated, both run Server 2003 standard. I need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old server to the the one I have in the other office before I upgrade. Also I am looking at bringing in Exchange 2010 server however I cant install/configure that until I transfer the roles as it needs to be at the same site as the schema master. My question really is as both servers replicate over a vpn, how quickly will the roles transfer and will there be downtime as I need to make sure that while the transfer is running, both servers will service logon's and share files. or would it be better to do it out of hours? many thanks and apologies if I've missed out anything Regards Tom

• Add a Search Box to the Drop-Down Tab List in Firefox

  Do you have a lot of tabs open no matter what time of day it is and find sorting through the tabs list frustrating? Then get control back with the List All Tabs Menu extension for Firefox. Before If you have a large number of tabs open using the “Tab List Menu” can start to become a little awkward. You can use your mouse’s middle button to scroll through the list or the tiny arrow button at the bottom but there needs to be a better way to deal with this. After Once you have installed the extension you will notice two differences in the “Tab List Menu”. There will be a search box available and a nice scrollbar for those really long lists. A closer look at the search box and scrollbar setup… Depending on your style you can use the scrollbar to look for a particular page or enter a search term and watch that list become extremely manageable. A closer look at our much shorter list after conducting a search. Definitely not hard to find what we were looking for at all. Conclusion If you are someone who has lots of tabs open at once throughout the day then the List All Tabs Menu extension might be the perfect tool to help you sort and manage those tabs. • Visual Studio ALM MVP of the Year 2011

  For some reason this year some of my peers decided to vote for me as a contender for Visual Studio ALM MVP of the year. I am not sure what I did to deserve this, but a number of people have commented that I have a rather useful blog. I feel wholly unworthy to join the ranks of previous winners: Ed Blankenship (2010) Martin Woodward (2009) Thank you to everyone who voted regardless of who you voted for. If there was a prize for the best group of MVP’s then the Visual Studio ALM MVP would be a clear winner, as would the product group of product groups that is Visual Studio ALM Group. To use a phrase that I have learned since moving to Seattle and probably use too much: you guys are all just awesome. I have tried my best in the last year to document not only every problem that I have had with Team Foundation Server (TFS), but also to document as many of the things I am doing as possible. I have taken some of Adam Cogan’s rules to heart and when a customer asks me a question I always blog the answer and send them a link. This allows both my blog and my understanding of TFS to grow while creating a useful bank of content. The idea is that if one customer asks, all benefit. I try, when writing for my blog, to capture both the essence and the context for a problem being solved. This allows more people to benefit as they do not need to understand the specifics of an environment to gain value. I have a number of goals for this year that I think will help increase value in the community: persuade my new colleagues at Northwest Cadence to do more blogging (Steve, Jeff, Shad and Rennie) Rangers Project – TFS Iteration Automation with Willy-Peter Schaub, Bill Essary, Martin Hinshelwood, Mike Fourie, Jeff Bramwell and Brian Blackman Write a book on the Team Foundation Server API with Willy-Peter Schaub, Mike Fourie and Jeff Bramwell write more useful blog posts I do not think that these things are beyond the realms of do-ability, but we will see…

Today we’re curious about which one you use, and would you ever consider another one? Believe it or not…not everyone uses Google (surprising indeed), there are several other alternatives out there that some of you may be using and we’re interested in hearing about it. One of the more unique and interesting ones we previously covered is ixquick, which doesn’t save your IP or any information and can be customized quite nicely if you’re the paranoid type. We’re interested in hearing about which search engine you currently use. Would you ever switch to a different one? • Fix Firefox Not Scrolling with Up/Down Arrow Keys or Home/End Keys

  If you’ve encountered a problem where your Firefox installation no longer scrolls when you use the up or down arrow keys, and even the Home or End keys don’t work anymore, there’s an easy fix. When this problem happens, you’ll notice that moving the arrow keys around just moves the cursor around the page. Annoying! The problem is because you tripped the Caret Browsing feature at some point, and accidentally hit Yes. To fix this, you can just hit the F7 key again. Or, if you want to do it the about:config way, filter by accessibility.browsewithcaret and make sure it’s set to false. Remember, you can double-click on any boolean value to toggle between true and false. • Cannot install any Feature/Role on Windows 2008 R2 Standard

  I was trying to install Exchange 2010 prerequisites, when I encountered some error. All look like the same. Like this one: Error: Installation of [Windows Process Activation Service] Configuration APIs failed. the server needs to be restarted to undo the changes. My server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. UPDATE: I tried installing the prerequisites one by one using PowerShell. Now I have errors on RPC over Http proxy: Installation of [Web Server (IIS)] Tracing Failed, Attempt to install tracing failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation. Searching about the error code doesn't tell me much more than something went wrong when trying to update windows. Installing Http Tracing alone also doesn't make any difference.

• Error: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server (again)

  Hello, I'm using: Vista SP2 Visual Studio 2010 professional edition SQL Server 2008 Express R2 Dev Server (Cassini) This question has been asked several times. Unfortunately, I didn't find yet an answer that exactly appropriate for me, so it's not possible to apply the solutions I find on the web. I find solutions for Win XP, 7, 2003, sql server 2005. But not for the above combination. I just don't why this problem started a couple days ago. I removed sql server and added it again, but no good result. Either an answer to the question or links to resources will be helpful. Thanks for helping.

• Achieving forward compatibility with C++11

  I work on a large software application that must run on several platforms. Some of these platforms support some features of C++11 (e.g. MSVS 2010) and some don't support any (e.g. GCC 4.3.x). I see this situation continuing on for several years (my best guess: 3-5 years). Given that, I would like set up a compatibility interface such that (to whatever degree possible) people can write C++11 code that will still compile with older compilers with a minimum of maintenance. Overall, the goal is to minimize #ifdef's as much as reasonably possible while still enabling basic C++11 syntax/features on the platforms that support them, and provide emulation on the platforms that don't. Let's start with std::move(). The most obvious way to achieve compatibility would be to put something like this in a common header file: #if !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) namespace std { // C++11 emulation template <typename T> inline T& move(T& v) { return v; } template <typename T> inline const T& move(const T& v) { return v; } } #endif // !defined(HAS_STD_MOVE) This allow people to write things like std::vector<Thing> x = std::move(y); ... with impugnity. It does what they want in C++11 and it does the best it can in C++03. When we finally drop the last of the C++03 compilers, this code can remain as is. However, according to the standard, it is illegal to inject new symbols into the std namespace. That's the theory. My question is, practically speaking, is there any harm in doing this as a way of achieving forward compatibility?

• OS X Snow Leopard stops processing clicks from Wacom Intuous2

  I'm using a Wacom Intuos2 graphics tablet in OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, which works great, 80% of the time. Every 20 minutes or so, OS X to just start ignoring input from the pen. More specifically, only the pen tip is ignored - the side buttons on the pen still work. Putting the Mac to sleep and waking it back up restores functionality to the pen tip. This is using both of the latest Wacom drivers claiming compatibility with Snow Leopard: versions 6.1.2-5 (Nov 25, 2009) and 6.1.3-3 (Jan 21, 2010). I have no experience with this tablet with other version of OS X / drivers. The tablet works 100% in Windows, which leads to blame either OS X or the OS X drivers.

• Apache 2 with Weblogic Plug-in Redirection, original location still requested to backend

  We're trying to setup an SSL server in front of a Weblogic server using Apache as the SSL provider. Here's what's inside of our httpd.conf: <Location /original> SetHandler weblogic-handler WebLogicHost 10.11.1.1 WebLogicPort 8700 PathTrim /original PathPrepend /destination ConnectTimeoutSecs 60 </Location> <Location /destination> SetHandler weblogic-handler WebLogicHost 10.11.1.1 WebLogicPort 8700 ConnectTimeoutSecs 60 </Location> This setup works mostly, but in the ssl_error_log file there're these entries: [Wed Aug 11 14:59:00 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] ap_proxy: trying GET /original at backend host '10.11.1.1/8700; got exception 'CONNECTION_REFUSED [os error=0, line 1739 of ../nsapi/URL.cpp]: Error connecting to host 10.11.1.1:8700' The weird thing is, the redirection still works, but these annoying entries still shows up. Anyone can point out where did we go wrong? Thanks.

• ASX: Just Another Stock Market Operator

  I try to stay informed with what's happening in global financial markets since we all know they are all interconnected. Last week, on Mar. 11 2010, Australia's Senate passed a law that reduced Australia's stock market's role to just a stock market operator. Before this, ASX (Australian Stock Exchange) acted as both its own regulator and operator (supervising trade actvities and handling the trades) of Australia's stock market. Many viewed this as a conflict of interest. So now, the Australian Securities & Investments Commision (ASIC) will act as regulator and ASX will simply be a stock market operator to ensure the continued integrity of financial markets. I believe what this is doing is laying the groundwork to have more than one stock exchange in Australia. I woudn't be surpised if Nasdaq makes a play. As you may or may not know, Nasdaq had been trying for years to take over control of the London Stock Exchange (LSE), which LSE had rejected because it thinks it is worth more than what Nasdaq is willing to pay. Nasdaq or even NYSE may want a piece of Asia/Pacific because nowadays most of the IPOs are coming from foreign companies outside the US. I didn't know this, but apparently many Asia/Pacific stock exchanges have a monopoly where they act as both regulator and operator. I'll be curious to see what happens after the ASIC meet and decide how to regulate Australia's stock exchange to see how many suitors come running towards Australia's financial market.

• Setting up kerberos for SQL Server 2008 R2 not taking effect

  I am trying to configure Kerberos for my SQL Server (the database engine domain account). I have executed the following command: SETSPN -A MSSQLSvc/MyDBServer:1433 MyDomain\SQLServerService Replacing MyDBServer with the FQDN of the server and replacing MyDomain\SQLServerService with the name of my account. I then ran the query: SELECT s.session_id , c.connect_time , s.login_time , s.login_name , c.protocol_type , c.auth_scheme , s.HOST_NAME , s.program_name FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s JOIN sys.dm_exec_connections c ON s.session_id = c.session_id This returns NTLM. So it's not Kerberos. What am I mising? The delegation tab is available for the account, so the spn bit worked perfectly fine. Is it not required to set some settings in the delegation tab? I've seen this in the case of setting kerberos for Sharepoint 2010 (which I intend to setup). Thanks

• Create a Shortcut To Group Policy Editor in Windows 7

  If you’re a system administrator and find yourself making changes in Group Policy Editor, you might want to make a shortcut to it. Here we look at creating a shortcut, pinning it to the Taskbar, and adding it to Control Panel. Note: Local Group Policy Editor is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Typing gpedit.msc into the search box in the Start menu to access Group Policy Editor can get old fast. To create a shortcut, right-click on the desktop and select New \ Shortcut. Next type or copy the following path into the location field and click Next. c:\windows\system32\gpedit.msc Then give your shortcut a name…something like Group Policy, or whatever you want it to be and click Finish. Now you have your Group Policy shortcut… If you want it on the Taskbar just drag it there to pin it. • Best of "The Moth" 2012

  As with previous years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year and share a quick review of my blog posts from 2012 (plus speculate on my 2013 blog focus). 1. Like 2011, my professional energy in 2012 was dominated by C++ AMP including articles, blog posts, demos, slides, and screencasts. I summarized that over two posts on the official team blog that I linked to from my blog post here titled: “The last word on C++ AMP”, which also subtly hinted at my change of role which I confirmed in my other post titled “Visual Studio Continued Excitement”. 2. Even before I moved to the Visual Studio Diagnostics team in September, earlier in the year I had started sharing blog posts with my thoughts on that space, something I expect to continue in the new year. You can read some of that in these posts: The way I think about Diagnostic tools, Live Debugging, Attach to Process in Visual Studio, Start Debugging in Visual Studio, Visual Studio Exceptions dialogs. 3. What you should also expect to see more of is thoughts, tips, checklists, etc around Professional Communication and on how to be more efficient and effective with that, e.g. Link instead of Attaching, Sending Outlook Invites, Responding to Invites, and OOF checklist. 4. As always, I sometimes share random information, and noteworthy from 2012 is the one where I outlined the Visual Studio versioning story (“Visual Studio 11 not 2011”, and after that post VS 11 was officially baptized VS2012) and the one on “How I Record Screencasts”. Looking back, unlike 2011 there were no posts in 2012 related to device development, e.g. for Windows Phone. Expect that to be rectified in 2013 as I hope to find more time for such coding… stay tuned by subscribing using the link on the left.
