• Web application Project management methodologie

  I am looking to streamline my company's web development process. Including analysis. I myself am specialized in XP and Scrum. But we are building web application with a process cycle of 3-4 weeks and a lifetime of 1-4 months. When a project is sold, only then the project managers (= people who do analysis but know nothing about it = a small flow chart and some screen shots as analysis) What is happening is: A LOT of change requests Minimal development time Minimal analysis time NOW: the main question :) can you recommend me some methodologies and books to read for the entire project management ? Thanks in advance @Edit, I myself was looking at a combination of SCRUM for the management with flowcharts, + RAD/LD for development, and trying to distilate something from that.

• Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

  If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

• Should I rely on externally-hosted services?

  I am wondering over the dangers / difficulties in using external services like Google Chart in my production state website. With external services I mean them that you can't download and host on your own server. (-) Potentially the Google service can be down when my site is up. (+) I don't have to develop those particular systems for new browser technologies, hopefully Google will do that for me. (-) Extra latency while my site fetch the data from the google servers. What else? Is it worth spending time and money to develop my own systems to be more in control of things?

  In my rhythm game, I have a note object which can be of different colors depending on the note chart. I could use a sprite sheet with all the different color variations I use, but I would prefer to parametrize this. (For information, a note sprite is compound with one main color, for example a red note has only red, light red and dark red.) So, how to change the colors of a sprite basing on a new color ? So for us that are naives, knowing that programming is generally more difficult, why do business analysts and project managers get higher salary than programmers? What is it that makes their job a high paying job when even at most times programmers are the ones that go home late? UPDATE Excuse my ignorance, from some of the response it seems that the reason why BAs and PMs gets higher salary because they are the ones that usually responsible for the mess programmers make. But at the end of the day, it is programmers that get their hands dirty to fix the mess and work harder. So it still does not make sense.

• Exchange 2003-Exchange 2010 post migration GAL/OAB problem

  I am very new to Exchange so forgive my newbie-ness. I've exhausted Google trying to find a way to solve my problem so I'm hoping some of you gurus can shed some light on my next steps. Please forgive my bungling around through this. The problem I cannot download/update the Global Address List (GAL) and Offline Address Book (OAB) on my Outlook 2010 clients. I get: Task 'emailaddress' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The operation failed. An object cannot be found.' ---- error. I'm using cached exchange mode, which if I turn off Outlook hangs completely from the moment I start it up. (Note I've replaced my actual email address with 'emailaddress') Background information I migrated mailboxes, public store, etc. from a Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 box to a Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 based primarily on an experts exchange how to article. The exchange server is up and running as an internet facing exchange server with all of the roles necessary to send and receive mail and in that capacity is working fine. I "thought" I had successfully migrated everything from the SBS03 box, and due to huge amounts of errors in everything from AD to the Exchange install itself I removed the reference to the SBS03 server in adsiedit. I've still got access to the old SBS03 box, but as I said the number of errors in everything is preventing even the uninstall of Exchange (or the starting of the Exchange Information Store service), so I'm quite content to leave that box completely out of the picture while trying to solve my problem. After research I discovered this is most likely because I failed to run the “update-globaladdresslist” (or get / update) command from the Exchange shell before I removed the Exchange 2003 server from adsiedit (and the network). If I run the command now it gives me: WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Offline Address Book - first administrative group" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Schedule+ Free Busy Information – first administrative group" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/ContainernameArchive" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/ContainernameContacts" is invalid and couldn't be updated. (Note that I’ve replaced my domain with “domainname.com” and my organization name with “containername”) What I’ve tried I don’t want to use the old OAB, or GAL, I don’t care about either, our GAL and distribution lists needed to be organized anyway, so at this point I really just want to get rid of the old reference to the “first administrative group” and move on. I’ve tried to create a new GAL and tell Exchange 2010 to use that GAL instead of the old GAL, but I'm obviously missing some of the commands or something dumb I need to do to start over with a blank slate/GAL/OAB. I'm very tempted to completely delete the entire "first administrative group" tree from adsiedit and see if that gets rid of the ridiculous reference that no longer exists but I dont want to break something else. Commands run to try to create a new GAL and tell exch10 to use that GAL: New-globaladdresslist –name NAMEOFNEWGAL Set-globaladdresslist GUID –name NAMEOFNEWGAL This did nothing for me except now when I run get-globaladdresslist or with the | FL pipe I see two GALs listed, the “default global address list” and the “NAMEOFNEWGAL” that I created. After a little more research this morning it looks like you can't change/delete/remove the default address list, and the only way to do what I'm trying to do would be to maybe remove the default address list via adsiedit and recreate with a command something like new-GlobalAddressList -Name "Default Global Address List" -IncludedRecipients AllRecipients. This would be acceptable but I've searched and searched and can't find instructions or a breakdown of where exactly the default GAL lives in AD, and if I'd have to remove multiple child references/records. Of interest I'm getting an event ID 9337 in my application log OALGen did not find any recipients in address list \Global Address List. This offline address list will not be generated. -\NAMEOFMYOAB --------- on my Exchange 2010 box, which pretty much to me seems to confirm my suspicion that the empty GAL/OAB is what's causing the Outlook client 0x8004010F error. Help please!

• Outlook 2007 Does Not Accept Login Credentials, OWA Webmail Does. Troubleshooting Advice?

  I am trying to connect Outlook 2007 to Exchange (Hosted Exchange from Rackspace). Soon, I will need to roll this out for our entire office. With the Exchange account added to Outlook, Outlook starts up and asks for the user's username and password. Unfortunately, it doesn't like the password I use for it. I can confirm this username (email address) and password combo works by using Outlook WebMail, and another user (in another network/office) confirmed the Exchange account does work within his Outlook client. In my network/office, I can confirm that an Outlook 2007 client (under Windows 7) can connect to the Hosted Exchange server from Rackspace. However, I have not been able to get Outlook 2007 (under Windows XP SP3) to connect to the very same Exchange server Outlook 2007 (under Windows 7) can connect to. Outlook continuously prompts me for the username and password and does not accept the correct combination. Now, regarding the Outlook client that cannot connect/login to Exchange: The user has full admin rights on the workstation We do not run a domain controller/LDAP The firewall on the workstation has been disabled Real time file scanning in Microsoft Security Essentials has been disabled There are no virus scanning applications that would interface with Outlook or an email server. The Exchange account is setup to run on a newly created Outlook profile The network firewall does not log any blocked attempts A packet capture at the router reveals communication between the workstation and the Exchange server or proxy (though, this is SSL encrypted, so I don't know what the computers are saying) I have applied a fix (Added DWORD value of 0 for DefConnectOpts under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC) that was recommended to make RPC function when the workstation does not have a default gateway set. Workstation is configured as DHCP. This fix did nothing, and it may be worth noting the RPC subkey was not present until I added it. RPC service is running on the workstation The program is not running under any compatibility mode. Side note: Outlook 2007 installs with compatibility mode for XP enabled by default in windows 7. Outlook 2007 will not even try to connect to exchange if this compatibility mode is checked. In windows xp, I tried checking compatibility mode for windows 2000, and was unable to connect to exchange as well. Here is the specific configuration I've used in a blank outlook profile: Microsoft Exchange Server: ##MASKED##-MBX-C18.mex07a.mlsrvr.com Username: (Full Email Address: [email protected]) Password: ##MASKED## Outlook Anywhere: Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP Exchange Proxy Settings: Proxy Server: mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "Connect using SSL only" Under "Only connect to proxy servers...", enter: msstd:mex07a.emailsrvr.com Check "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Check "On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP" Proxy authentication settings: Basic Authentication Notes: mex07a.mlsrvr.com and mex07a.emailsrvr.com may look incorrect at first glance, but this is not a typo - these instructions were handed down from rackspace and are confirmed to be working, just not on this workstation. I have tried to use the RpcPing utility but must have been using it wrong. I got as far as "Bad Interface Descriptor". It would seem to me getting Outlook and Exchange to work together would be a breeze, especially since everything is done over port 80 with web services. Unfortunately, the user is stuck with WebMail access only, because Outlook won't accept the Exchange credentials. Do you have any ideas of other things I could try to debug this issue further? • Console Hangs when Attempting to Deploy Software Updates

  When in the SCCM 2012 console under Software Updates, I click Deploy on a Software Update Group and the console hangs indefinitely. It just stops; I click away and back and Windows does not recognize that the console has stopped responding. I end up having to kill the console through Task Manager. I have left the console for hours and it never becomes responsive again. I have tried removing and reinstalling the SUP, without success. Server reboots do not help, either. The issue with the console occurs both on my desktop, and directly on the site server itself. Any ideas? I've checked server logs and found nothing that would be indicative of a problem. • IMAPSync Migration to Exchange 2010 SP1: Exchange drops connections while checking for existence of folders

  I'm migrating from ZImbra Collaboration Suite to Exchange 2010 SP1. I'm testing IMAPSync as a possible migration tool and have hit a problem with the IMAP server in Exchange 2010. For each account it migrates, IMAPSync loops through the list of folders in the source mailbox and tests for the existence of each one in the destination mailbox. It then goes on to create those folders that do not exist and copy over the messages. It's the intial testing for the existence of the folders that is giving me a problem. The response given by the Exchange server when the folder does not yet exist is given as an error: "R=""16 NO IMAPSyncTest/8 doesn't exist."" After ten of these errors have been issued in succession, the Exchange server appears to stop responding to the IMAP session. Enabling protocol logging for IMAP confirms that the 10th request for a non-existant folder is the last request to be logged on the server. IMAPSync carries on merrily without seeming to realise its connection has gone and thus fails to create any folders. I've logged this with the tool's creator. Does anyone have any idea why Exchange is stopping responding to the connections though? The behaviour looks rather like throttling, although the 'ten strikes and you're out' trigger does not seem to correspond to any of the triggers on the ThrottlingPolicies. Just to check, I've tried creating a new ThrottlingPolicy, turned everything that I think might be relevant up to 11 and applied it to the my test mailbox. Policy settings are listed below, along with IMAP settings. Everything else should be pretty much as default.   I just developed my first non-trivial android app. It was a complete nightmare. I came up with an idea, build the app, changed my idea, and implemented a lot of input from others on new features. All in all my app took 10 times longer than I think that it should have, it is almost impossible to look the source code and tell what's going on with the classes, and may or may not have unused methods that I'll never be able to find... So I would like an opinion from those of you with experience on how to plan out my designs for the future. I created a flow chart (pencil drawn) of a plan: I would like constructive criticism.

• Static route works on one computer, not the other

  I have been struggling with this for a couple days now, maybe I just need some people with a fresh perspective to figure out what the issue is. Basically I have a bunch of computers that are being routed through a specific gateway in order to access a web page that is hosted internally on a separate subnet. I set up static routes on all of the computers, and they all work... except one. So essentially what I am trying to do here is route all traffic to the 10.zzz.zzz.0 subnet through the 10.xxx.xxx.147 gateway. Everything else should go through the 10.xxx.xxx.230 gateway. This is the intended behavior, and again it is working everywhere but that one station. I noticed that the Active Route metric costs differ between the two stations, but I am new to the routing table and I am not sure how that is impacting the behavior. I hope I have been able to explain the situation clearly. Any help would be much appreciated. I can provide any additional information if needed!
