  Do anyone knows any kind of apps or services for "taking care of servers"? (besides managed servers) There are hundreds of ways your server or application can stop working properly. Small things are easy to miss but usually easy to fix. Log overgrouth, configuration issues, etc. Of course there are best practice checklists, but its not a human task to check configuration best practices. Im sure it can be automated: some kind of agent can monitor all system settings, say what is right and wrong and give suggestions on how to make it right. I have to admin several servers and I need some kind of overview of overall situation. As well as a tool, that will fix problems automatically. Can you people suggest something? (I know its a little bit out of rules of SF, but I think this particular question is quite specific) It would be great to have something like http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1451319/asp-net-mvc-view-engine-comparison but for automation software.

  Essentially, lock manager stops responding (lockd/nfslock), but shows as running as a kernel process. If I bounce portmap and nfslock, it has no effect. Doesn't show up in the portmapper registered services rpcinfo -p .. doesn't show nlockmgr. it just shows portmapper and status If I manually remount the drives, it fixes the issue. I'm assuming that the service (lockd) goes stale or hangs when there is no NFS activity? It seems like issuing a mount for NFS volumes "awakens" it and things work once that happens. Please help me nail this down for point me to somewhere to get more information on what might be happening. Control security, tune LAMP stack, monitoring etc. from dashboard. Never touch SSH and login in to the server. Pay every month for this service. I already find few providers, but they support only EC2 cloud servers. If you can suggest me anything for dedicated machines? • SCCM Client Push FAIL - Win2000 box

  When trying to install the SCCM client onto a Windows 2000 box, the install fails. The install script is run through a batch file (CONTENTS: \mdop\SCCM_client\ccmsetup.exe /mp:MDOP /logon smssitecode=MID smsslp=MDOP) hosted on a public area of the network. This script has worked for all machines (mostly Win2003 Server). I've tried enabling all the common services it requires (BITS, IIS Admin, Windows Installer), but it still only runs for a second or two then quits. Here's the piece of the log file where it errors out: [LOG[Couldn't get directory list for directory 'http://MDOP/CCM_Client/ClientPatch'. • FreeBSD Jail own network stack with vimage

  I want to throw all services from the host system and put them in jails. Unfortunatly this doesn't work for file sharing (e.g. nfsd) because the jails don't have there own network stack by default. I know read something about vimage which would solve this issue. See more in this thread: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=9006 The use of vimage with raw jails should use moreorless but the use with vimage and ezjail makes it hard. Does anyone have experience about this topic and wants to share it? Regards

  there is a bunch of servers connected to shared storage in a private LAN (10.x.x.x). this privateLAN is managed by a windows server (DHCP, DNS and directory services). how can these hosts be accessed from outside of this privateLAN? Eg. Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software?

• How to report spam to blacklists

  Is there a central place to report spam to various blacklists ? I regularly report to spamcop, but I do not see the addresses I reported as listed. (I guess nobody else bothers with my regular spammer. After being frustrated with bayes and spammcop, I blocked its /24 subnet) Spamcop is only a single service. I want to make the spammer known to a large number of services, and hopefully blocked by many of them. I looked for some other blacklists to report to, but the ones I looked do not consider user submissions (or they hide it well)

• Error code 0x80070035. The network path was not found

  My system is connected with a local LAN connection with 30 PC's. I'm not able to access the shared drive in the network, but I'm able to ping the IP address in which the drive is present. I have checked to start all the services, which are to be started and i have check the TCP/UDP ports also, but even after that I'm not able to access the drive, the same error message is being displayed again and again. Please help me to rectify the problem. I'm trying to solve the problem for the last 1 week. I have tried various solutions which are present in various web site, but I'm not able to find a proper solution. So please help me.

• How do I remove Lenovo Veriface from the login screen?

  I have a Lenovo laptop which came preloaded with Windows 7. Every time I start the computer and get to the Windows log-in screen (where you enter the user password) I get a message about Veriface software giving me the option to use it. I'd like to disable this. I went over the Program's settings and there is nothing that allows you to disable it from loading with Windows. Also, I thought that it might be a service to disable, but I don't see it in the list of services, nor is it in the list of start-up Processes (either in msconfig or in the registry). I'm considering uninstalling it completely, but since it's a part of the lenovo software pack that came with the computer and I do use some of these software, I'm not sure if uninstalling it might also remove wanted things (and uninstalling and reinstalling if needed seems like a mess). Anybody know if there's an easy way to achieve this?

• Need reasonably priced router with QoS support [closed]

  I dont need wireless. I am expecting very heavy traffic, with possibly thousands of tcp connections open at one time. This would require that the router has good hardware. I also need to limit the different services i will provide. Lets say i need to guarantee 60% of all the bandwidth to HTTP, 10% FTP, and 10% for Mail... So the router software must have flexible QoS options as well. I don't know which one to chooose, because this information is usually not given on the router specs.

  Hello, Environment: Windows Server 2008 R2 fully patched, working as Domain Controller in Win 2003 native domain. Users started to report problems with share, it turned out that server service won't start. I've scrambled google but can't find a thing. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance :) Service fails to start, then when starting service I get: Windows could not start the Server service on SERVERNAME. • Wired and Wireless Network Duplication

  Howdy! Running into an issue when some of our client's have their laptop's connected via the wired ethernet network aswell as on the WLAN of the same network. There is know issues caused to the end clients.. BUT! Being a Managed Services Engineer i get pretty over the alerts that come through on our reports for machine's with the same hostname on the same network! We are not going to remove this monitoring because it does help a lot with detecting and stopping inferior users and things like that. So basically.. Question is, is there a way in Windows (third party programs welcome) to disable the wireless network when a wired network is connected and operational.. I know that Windows automticaly 'prefers' the wired network, however they are still both connected and therfore there is duplicate hostnames on the same network. Could also have stupid issues with DNS and things like that! Thanks!

• WSO2 Installation Stops

  I am only trying to get WSO2 Data Services to start up on an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server. I have installed Java, set the JAVA_HOME environment variable, and download the binary distribution from WSO2. When I run /opt/wso2dataservices-2.6.2/bin/wso2server.sh, everything seems to start up fine and I can start to navigate to the page. The problem is a few seconds later, the console says Killed and everything stops. Does anybody have any ideas for how I can figure out what's going on? Edit: It seems to stop when I try to access the page, but not on its own.

• Need hosting (e-mail, http) for external domains

  This may not be the right place, but since it is a more technical aspect of the hosting world, I am taking the liberty to ask: I'm currently running a virtual server with nginx and postfix for web and e-mail, but I can't handle the administration and, due to frequent problems with e-mail services, I need to resolve this with a almost-standard hosting package (anything should work, even 5 MB static files would be OK). The exception being that I would like to use several domains, hosted with different registrars, for web and e-mail. Currently, this is a very simple configuration in my setup. All hosters I have looked at seem to think this a costly business (more than domain registration costs), but of course the recommend to transfer domains to them (they want the $$). Does anyone know of a hosting company that allows its customers to freely manage domains registered somewhere else?

• "Windows Groups" missing from NAP Conditions

  I am trying to configure a NAP policy for a 2008 R2 server running AD services. I have done this before and there is a condition for "Windows Groups". It is missing from the Conditions list, this time, though. I have registered NAP in AD I have restarted the NAP service I have rebooted I have removed the server as a NAP/IAS server in AD and re-registered I have removed the role and added it again I can't seem to find this in my googlings.   On Linux the ssh command has a -t option whose man page reads: Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbitrary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be very useful, e.g. when implementing menu services. Multiple -t options force tty allocate, even if ssh has no local tty. I would like to use this same option with PuTTY on Windows. In particular, I can see that PuTTY has a bunch of options under: Category - Connection - SSH - TTY and suspect it might be possible to achieve the same behavior via some of the (NUMEROUS!) settings found on this screen. • Provide credentials to process in a safe manner

  On system startup I need to launch a process which requires credentials for other services (database etc.) to interact. I obviously don't want to store those on disk for security reasons. I'm trying to think of a way to provide those credentials to the process on launch - and on launch only. After that they should be only available to the process. Is this possible somehow? The bottom line is to make it as hard as possible for an intruder to get to those credentials.

  I've been reading a lot of things about privacy, "being in control of your data" and everything, and now a project called diaspora* is trying to be an OSS Facebook alternative. Fact is: you still have to use a server. Even if you use a VPS somewhere, they still have access do your data, so diaspora* isn't that protective shell people are looking for absolute power over your data unless you create a server on your basement. My question is: is it possible to create a really encrypted usable server using a VPS? From database to source files? If not, what it can be "obfuscated" or encrypted? (And just a mention, not really my question, do you think is diaspora* really possible to be made?) (I know if you really want privacy you shouldn't be even using these services and being social, but I'm asking if it's possible to at least avoid companies using your data)

• Comparing outgoing mail options, self hosted VS google apps in my situation

  I am setting up a small site that has the need to be able to programmatically send mail from time to time. Password resets and things like that. I'm already using google apps to handle my domains email, so now i'm left with the decision between setting up basic SMTP services on my server to send "password reset mails and things like that" OR instead to have the software use google apps to send mail. I like the google apps option as it's less stuff to worry about and seems to fit my needs, i'm trying to figure out what the downsides would be? Thanks for any thoughts

  I want to created vpn server on Windows Server 2012. First I installed Active Directory domain services, then Remote Access server role. Opened Gettng Started Wizard, entered configure just vpn. Then in Routing and Remote access selected Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access. There selected custom configuration, vpn. Then created user in active directory and allowed network access permission. After this I tried to connect to vpn from windows 8. I get the following error: Error 720: A connection t the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection. What should I do?

• Timing startup processes?

  My Windows 7 use to boot up fast and now its getting rather slow. I suspect one program is eating up all the time yet i cant tell what it is since task manager shows <40% of the cpu being used. What can i use to track how long each process takes when my computer boots/starts up? Note: Except for launchy which i used before my comp became slow, all my startup and services are all signed and known (broadcom, VMWare, Google Inc, Intel, etc) Note2: I am mostly considering the time it takes after i login but i suspect the time before that is slightly slower (i dont think very much though)

• Uninstalling hard deleted application from Windows7

  Unfortunately, I have hard deleted the microsoft sql server folder present in program files folder. So now I need to uninstall the MSSQL server from my machine. I have tried but I got an error something like "The source folder is missing". For resolving this issue, I have manually deleted the MS SQL services using "sc delete" command and I have deleted the MSSQL entry from regedit file also. But still MS SQL server entry available in "Programs and Features" list. Please guide me for solving this issue even I can't able to re install the MSSQL server once again. Thank you guys... • How do I deploy Java code on an EC2 instance?

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it?
