• How can I roll back xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common?

  A recent update to Xorg broke my desktop, which now looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/PbBxh.jpg In short, the desktop background is not updating on the secondary display. (And if there is no secondary display, the primary display background stops updating.) Looking into the history, I found that this happened right after upgrading two packages: xserver-xorg-core xserver-common These were upgraded to 1.9.0-0ubuntu7.3. I'd like to downgrade these packages. How do I do that? There is ability to bring emblems programmatically. So, How can i use libnautilus-extension library to add some emblems like Dropbox does? Or is there any tweak tool for this?

  Hi, everyone: It's been a little over two weeks since the end of Oracle Open World 2012, and hope everyone has recovered sufficiently.  We have seen a tremendous amount of coverage on Oracle ADF Mobile during this Oracle Open World.  For starters, ADF Mobile demo booth was positioned in the Oracle Red Lounge in Moscone North, where all new and innovative technologies are being demonstrated.  The booth is liternally out front and the first booth in the area, and we had a lot of interested attendees talking to us.  It feels like ADF Mobile has finally arrived on the big stage.   I have A Sony VAIO laptop F-series () Nvidia and it has light sensor. When I was using Windows, this light sensor controlled the brightness and the keyboard backlight automatically due to the surroundings state. But when using Ubuntu 12.04, it only controls the backlight without automatically adjusting the brightness. How can I enable light sensor to automatically adjustment the LCD brightness without losing the keyboard backlight adjustment due to surrounding state?

• The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

  We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp. • Dolphin search bar missing. How can i get it back?

  A while ago, my search bar went missing in dolphin. If the search toolbar is checked for view/unhide, nothing shows up. I noticed if i check and uncheck the button to hide/unhide it, a small, thin content-less bar slightly pushes the rest of the toolbar up. i tried reconfiguring with dpkg, purging and reinstalling, etc. i left it alone as i thought it would be fixed in an update, but today i upgraded daolphin and it's still gone. any thoughts?

• How can I get back my deskopt? the left and top panels

  I installed the Ubuntu 12.10 and the driver for ATI Radeon HD 4330 (AMD Catalyst™ 12.6 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver) and the latest updates. After the restart now I can see only the deskopt backgrund and nothing more. No left or top panels. The resolution changed to 1024X768 and the graphic changed to: VESA:M92. What happened? Is there something wrong with the driver? How can I solve this? I'am a beginner, please answer according to this. Thank you!

• At what point should data be sent back to server?

  A good example would be the stackexchange "rate" button. When a post is upvoted the arrow changes color immediately. However there is a grace period for one to edit one's vote decision (oops! voted by mistake?). Is the upvote action processed immediately or does is only process after a set time period, or when the user leaves the page? How exactly is this rating processed? What is the standard for handling dynamic page edits (e.g. stackexchange rating, facebook posts?)

• Best way to redirect users back to the pretty URL who land on the _escaped_fragment_ one?

  I am working on an AJAX site and have successfully implemented Google's AJAX recommendation by creating _escape_fragment_ versions of each page for it to index. Thus each page has 2 URLs: pretty: example.com#!blog ugly: example.com?_escaped_fragment_=blog However, I have noticed in my analytics that some users are arriving on the site via the "ugly" URL and am looking for a clean way to redirect them to the pretty URL without impacting Google's ability to index the site. I have considered using a 301 redirect in the head but fear that Googlebot might try to follow it and end up in an endless loop. I have also considered using a JavaScript redirect that Googlebot wouldn't execute but fear that Google may interpret this as cloaking and penalize the website. Is there a good, clean, acceptable way to redirect real users away from the ugly URL if for some reason or another they end up arriving at the site that way?

• webhost4life, please give me, my data back. My website will not work without the database.

  I have about 4 or 5 accounts with WebHost4life.com, these are all my customers that based on my recommendation have been hosting with webhost4life.com. A few days ago for some reason they decided to migrate one of these accounts to a new server. They moved everything created a new database on the new server but the new database is empty. after spending hours with Tech support they acknowledged the problem and assured me it will take up to an hour or two and my database will be populated with the data. this was about 7 hours ago. Oh by the way I pay extra for the backup plan and yes you guessed it, none of my backups are there. Needless to say I’m very scared and disappointed. No one is responding to my emails  or phone calls. After searching the web, I found out, this has happened before, in some cases it took them days to fix the problem and many never got it resolved and switched hosting companies, I would love to do that but I need my 2 GB database before I start shopping around for a new hosting company. Stay away from Webhost4life.

• How do I get the Grub menu back after installing Windows on a separate disk?

  Tried sudo grub-install on sda1 but it complained about being a BAD IDEA. I had to install windows for a work related issue so I used a separate disk (I had used it for ubuntu on this computer, but bought a bigger disk so installed ubuntu on that and left the old one in in case I needed an old file). Windows installed fine but overwrote Grub. So if I choose the Ubuntu disk to boot first in BIOS I get a blank screen. I googled and followed this advice: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows However, when I get down to this section: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda1 I get this: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea… --recheck does nothing. Any ideas?

• Is it possible that Unity would some day switch back to Mutter?

  I remembered that the first Unity was indeed built on Mutter, but later ported to Compiz due to poor performance. I also know Canonical practically incorporated Compiz to work closely for future Unity, so this is getting less likely. But Compiz just seems pretty outdated now that GNOME3/GTK3/Mutter is becoming more mainstreamed, and it is known to deliver some performance issue, but on the other hand Mutter seems pretty good and is still steadily developing now, I'm just wondering if anyone related to the project is still testing and evaluating the possibility of Unity on Mutter? Not that you have to tell me now if you're going to do it or not. I just wanna know if anyone is considering it. Thanks.

• Dolphin Search Toolbar is missing its text field. How can I get it back?

  A while ago, my Search Toolbar bar went missing in dolphin. I'm referring to the Search Toolbar found under SettingsToolbars ShownSearch Toolbar. I used to sit at the very top right corner of the window. If the search toolbar is checked for view/unhide, the toolbar looks to activate something, as there is a slight shift in the interface buttons, but the text field is gone from the toolbar. I tried reconfiguring with dpkg, purging and reinstalling, etc. I left it alone as I thought it would be fixed in an update, but today I upgraded dolphin and it's still gone. This appears to be a 4.6 bug or something. Any thoughts?

• Develop in trunk and then branch off, or in release branch and then merge back?

  Say that we've decided on following a "release-based" branching strategy, so we'll have a branch for each release, and we can add maintenance updates as sub-branches from those. Does it matter whether we: develop and stabilize a new release in the trunk and then "save" that state in a new release branch; or first create that release branch and only merge into the trunk when the branch is stable? I find the former to be easier to deal with (less merging necessary), especially when we don't develop on multiple upcoming releases at the same time. Under normal circumstances we would all be working on the trunk, and only work on released branches if there are bugs to fix. What is the trunk actually used for in the latter approach? It seems to be almost obsolete, because I could create a future release branch based on the most recent released branch rather than from the trunk. Details based on comment below: Our product consists of a base platform and a number of modules on top; each is developed and even distributed separately from each other. Most team members work on several of these areas, so there's partial overlap between people. We generally work only on 1 future release and not at all on existing releases. One or two might work on a bugfix for an existing release for short periods of time. Our work isn't compiled and it's a mix of Unix shell scripts, XML configuration files, SQL packages, and more -- so there's no way to have push-button builds that can be tested. That's done manually, which is a bit laborious. A release cycle is typically half a year or more for the base platform; often 1 month for the modules.

  so for a further detail about this, my friend has a macbook pro thats all i know about it specfically aside from the fact it was running os x lion. before this guy got a hold of the computer that he knows, I could hit the command key and the R key to get to the disk utilities and what-not to install OS X Lion on it, but now since whomever my friend let touch th mac, i no longer and do any of the start-up keys for it.. • How can I deal with a difficult developer that is holding back the project? [migrated]

  Our entire project is being held up because of one piece which is being handled by a single developer. When we did finally got the latest version of his code and started reviewing it, we found the code was horrendous! Its a relatively simply workflow, however the code is so complex that it's very difficult to step through and review/debug. The developer responsible has a hard time accepting any kind of criticism, and feels he is more knowledgeable than others members of the team. It's difficult to even talk to him about his development work because it turns into "I know what I'm talking about and you're just wrong!" type of conversation. A request has already been put in to replace this developer but management is not doing anything. This is probably because devs are in short supply where we are, and this is a corporation has a lot of office drama. I'm just one of the developers, not the project manager, however I really want to see this project succeed. What can I do in this sort of situation to try and keep the project on track?

• My desktop disappeared, how do I get it back?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This morning when I logged into my Ubuntu, after login screen the complete desktop was empty, the only operation I could perform is right-click and open terminal. What I've tried: Ctrl+Alt+F1 unity --reset : didn't work From terminal unity --reset : didn't work And from login screen selecting Ubuntu 2D and that also didn't solve the problem. My laptop is Toshiba SA-60 onboard ATI graphic card with 1 GB RAM. Please tell me how to solve this problem. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu as whenever I install a I/O error pops up, forget about that. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu. Please help.

• Finding back to an old project that was turned upside-down by the developer. Your workflow?

  after some time I'm asked to work on a heavy web-project I did (layout, html/css) about a year ago. There are some changes that have to be made, basically some css and js stuff. By now the whole project was turned upside down by the developer. It gives me a hard time to connect to the work of him, especially because my old files and file-structure won't work anymore. Thats why I need a up-to-date working-environment, but I don't want to change the files on the server directly. Need some testing and improving while doing this. So, what is your workflow in such a case? Thought about copying the whole/parts of the server to a own homeserver. But even that will be a big task for me (I'm more the front-end-guy). Would be great if theres a way to shrink it down (php, mysql,...), since I only need to change some css/html javascript. Are there any tools available? Love to hear how you handle such situations. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.
