I'm trying to run XBMC on a Dell Dimension 4300S (stock parts). I cannot get it to finish a live boot. It gets stuck on "restarting openbsd secure shell server sshd" [see picture].
Any ideas?
Hi,
I want to setup a cluster. On each machine Windows XP and Linux should be installed and the OS should be selectable by a boat loader (e.g. grub). All machines have IPMI cards. Is it possible when starting the machines over IPMI to also select the OS to boot? And how?
Thanks!
Hello everyone,
I'm attempting to install OpenBSD on a fancy new home server equipment I just bought and here is my problem.
I followed this guide to create a bootable USB flash drive from an OpenBSD VM I have on my laptop but when I try to boot my laptop on it all I get is a "No OS" message (I tried two different USB keys).
Does anyone know that problem (and its solution) ?
I'm sick of needing to reboot my computer every time I wish to use another OS, or run a virtual machine that skimps on power. With the onset of large amounts of memory for computers nowadays I began to think that there must be some way to run two OS's in memory with a way to switch between the two. In my mind, it doesn't seem too difficult;
a compatibility layer boots up after bios, which in turn boots to OS1.
While in OS1, software is run that triggers a save to ram boots back to the compatability layer, and then boots to OS2.
This way, the OS's can be used side by side and boot times are cut drastically short since both OSs are already in ram.
Both OS's have their own designated and protected memory so there is no problem there...
I mean, it seems fine, but no one has done it, so there must be some reason as to why. I would love some insight into this please.
I have a system with two identical 1TB harddrives, where I image to a backup drive using the dd command. When I boot up, though, despite setting harddrive priority in the BIOS, the system sometimes boots the main drive, sometimes boots the backup. My system dual-boots Xubuntu and Windows XP, if that means anything to you.
Any ideas?
i try to create my own NAS and i need to automount the internal sata disks during boot
i know i could do using fstab but im searching for a more easy/generalized way so its easier to scale with less handwork needed for every hard drive attached (or every mainboard added to the cluster)
so anyone knows how to automount internal disks without using fstab like ubuntu does for usb drives?
im using ubuntu server 9.10
thx all
I have 2 external USB harddrives that are on/active during the boot process. I believe that Windows7 is looking at those drives while booting, which is causes bootup to take longer. Is there a way that I can disable these drives until after the OS has booted to the logon screen?
Is there a USB solution to PXE boot? I want to use ghost or clonezilla or something to image a bunch of units that don't have on board ethernet, and no clear real way to add to it.
Hi All
Need help to remove a confusion. Suppose we have two hard disk.
Referring to boot.ini, In case of MULTI and SCSI syntax: which parameter exactly tells us hard disk number?
Regards,
Hi folks,
I am (was) using an install of Win7 on the C Disk Partition,
I formatted the D Disk Parition, and now Win7 fails to bootup.
I suspect the bootup config files were stored within the D Partition, despite the install residing on the C Partition.
This is the error I'm getting: Reboot and Select proper Boot device
Any ideas on how I can fix this? :)
Here are the specs to put things into context:
ECS P4M800PRO-M478 (V1.0)
Intel P4 "Northwood" 2.8C GHz (HT) Socket 478
2x 512 MB PC2-4200 DDR2-533 RAM
Visiontek Radeon HD 3650 512 MB DDR2 AGP
Maxtor 120 GB SATA HDD
The Best Power 500 W ATX PSU
Anyways, it's not booting Windows XP SP3 properly. Specifically, there is a sound when it fails to boot and the computer automatically restarts. You can listen to the sound here.
What could be the problem?
Hi All
If i have two hard disks with each hard disk having a single Windows XP installed on it. Each hard disk have multiple partitions.
My question is will there be a single boot.ini for all the hard disks and where will it be(first or second hard disk)?
Regards,
When I reboot my machine, it takes around 10-15 minutes to boot. Tried removing unused programs, disk defragmentation, check disk, but I'm not able to identify the issue.
Any ideas to troubleshoot to see whether there is any failure, trying to start a service/program?
my xp sp3 o/s system is alread set to boot from cd rom 1st, but once the bootable cd is found
and i get the "Press any key to Load " (or something like that) my keyboard and mouse will not
work until windows begins to load. Any ideas on why and what the fix may be?
After an update yesterday my Dell X300 will only boot to a screen with an option to perform 2 memory tests. If I perform these tests, it will only go back to this same screen, offering a choice of memory test again, 86+ or 86+ serial console 115200. This screen is headed - GNU Grub version 1.97 beta 4.
This is a full install on my hard drive.
How can I get back to booting normally?
My system doesn't boot at all, upon starting it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen saying "Windows failed to start, a recent software or hardware change might be the cause" and gives two options
Launch System Repair (Recommended)
Start Windows normally
But neither options work, upon clicking either of them, some progress bars get displayed and the screen just freezes on "Starting Windows".
I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk but it too freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen.
I even tried booting from ubuntu, slax linux, but they don't work too.
Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone has any ideas on what's causing my pc to lockup at the splash screen on bootup for 1-3minutes. This ONLY happens on the first power up, subsequent reboots run fine.
Running on a Falcon II SSD
I did the customary move of files to another drive when i first formatted the ssd. The slow first boot only started happening recently.
Thanks in advance!
Is it possible to dual boot between Ubuntu and W7.vhd? If anyone knows please tell me how.
if you can answer to [email protected] would be perfect. Thanks
I read somewhere that the ultimate boot cd can diagnos computer problems in this case would this program help me get my windows xp back? When I turn on the screen and hit start windows normal or go to safe mode I get a flash of the win xp logo and then it goes to this error page. Can you tell from this message is it a hardware or software issue
I would like to create an alternative booting possibility in my GRUB menu that does not start some services (listed by chkconfig) like cups.
I would use this boot during travel where I surely does not need these services and shorter bootup time is preferable. Permanent removal of such services is not an option because I could not miss them during normal daily work.
I use Mandriva 2010 with the latest updates.
I currently have a laptop with Windows Vista, and I'd like to upgrade to Windows 7 and also install Ubuntu Linux as dual boot. I need to make disk partitions used by Windows smaller to make room for Linux.
What is easiest way to upgrade? Should I resize Vista partition first to make room for linux installation, or should I upgrade first to Windows 7 and resize partitions after upgrade.
When I boot Mint in recovery profile it says something about a bug, then it freezes on the line:
Firmware bug DOD is defined but not DOS
I want to access it because I need to restore it like it was the first time I used it. I am suspecting it may be something about the drivers.
Is there any way to restore my system?
Here are my pc specifications:
Dell XPS 15z
Intel core i7
6 gb Ram
Im using linux mint, maya, cinnamon
