  • Nagios Statistics for Notifications/Alerts

    - by bread555
We have had our Nagios installation up for a year, and we are now required to give some statistics on how much it has worked and what it has done in the environment. As such, I was wondering if anyone knows if Nagios also holds data records on how many alerts and notifications it sends out? I am not necessarily looking for reports on what it alerted on, but just some raw statistics for a powerpoint. TL:DR Can I extract how many notifications and alerts Nagios has produced in it's existence or between certain dates?

  • Cloud hosting for windows domain controller, possible?

    - by Preet Sangha
We currently host our own domain controller (small company) locally on dedicated h/w. However to mitigate disaster recovery we're considering the use of virtualisation and cloud hosting. One thought is Virtual primary domain controller hosted in the cloud + a local (secondary) virtualised server running in the office as a cache? Is this possible or should I consider something else? We're happy to pay for the decent hosting and DR but this is really out of my experience.

  • Suggestions for sharing and using data between Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot

    - by wizjany
Note: TL;DR, scroll to bottom for summary. I recently set up my computer for a dual boot between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. My current drive setup is as follows. | A1 | A2 | | B1 | B2 | B3 | A1: 100 mb, windows 7 "System Reserved" boot partition A2: 230 gb, data section, this one needs to be shared between the operating systems B1: 125 gb, windows 7 OS B2: 123 gb, ubuntu OS B3: 2gb, linux swap space Pretty much i want to have my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc accessible from both operating systems. My first attempt involved making the data (a2) partition NTFS, and moving my home folder from ubuntu to the data partition. However, as I read NTFS does not work nice with permission, and it messed up my home folder. My next idea is one of the following: 1) format the data partition to ext2/3/4 and move my home folder from linux there, and get a driver to read ext partitions in windows 7. The problem with that is that most of the ext drivers/software are not compatible with windows 7 or do not integrate with windows explorer (I really don't want to open a separate software window just to access my data, plus it's probably not compatible with other software.) http://www.fs-driver.org/ looks promising, but I'm not sure how it works with ext4 and windows 7 (not officially supported, when trying in vista compatibility mode, it tells me I need to format the ext drive to use it). My next idea, 2) keep the home folder in ubuntu where it is, but create symlinks for the Documents, Music, etc folders to an NTFS formatted Data (A2) partition, and add those locations to the windows 7 libraries. I'm not totally sure how the permissions would work out, but it should be fine since it's only the documents, music, etc and not the important config files in the rest of /home/user/. Correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, symlinks is my best idea, although i'm not sure how it will work. Any suggestions, additions to my ideas, links, pointers, whatever would be greatly appreciated. Even if it means i should reformat both my drives and repartition (2 250gb drives if you want to suggest a setup for that), I won't be too opposed if that's the best suggestion (I've gone through the format/install/format/reinstall process 5 times over the past 3 days, once more won't hurt me). TL;DR, summary: I have two hard drives. One is partitioned for Ubuntu and Windows 7, the second one I want accessible to both operating systems to store documents, music, pictures, videos, etc. Suggestions on how to set up the data drive please =) P.S. bonus if I can get an apache server document root folder working between the two OS's as well (permissions could become very complicated, so don't worry too much about that) P.P.S. Related question, but data viewing is one way: http://superuser.com/questions/84586/partition-scheme-and-size-for-dual-boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-9-10-with-separate-p

  • Idling CPU at 65C, re-place or re-paste?

    - by Event_Horizon
Replaced Graphics card because screen would go black at a certain temp while gaming, but sound would stay on (but locked up). Then with replacement card whole PC shuts off during gaming now because the CPU is overheating. Note: CPU is only supposed to go up to 71C max according to manufacturer and it goes well over upon load. System Temp: 30C TL;DR: Idling CPU at 65C, started to shut down due to overheating, re-place (CPU, or CPU and Motherboard) or re-paste?

  • Removing grub and getting a dual boot of Linux Mint and Win 8.1 working after failed attempt

    - by ThroatOfWinter57
I gave the details of my problem at reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/27qrun/more_specific_questions_about_failed_win_81mint/ tl;dr: I deleted the /, /home, and swap partitions I made for mint after realizing my installation couldn't be booted into and gave the space back to my windows partition. Running boot-repair on my mint live session messed stuff up. Now I can't even boot to my live session usb because grub is left over. Windows 8.1 does work though.

  • How do I detect call forwarding in Asterisk?

    - by jibcage
Basically, I want to do the same thing that Google Voice does. I forward my calls to a DID number that rings my Asterisk server via IAX2, which, if it detects the call has been forwarded, sends it to voicemail. Otherwise, if the call hasn't been forwarded (and somebody has dialed the DID number), it dials my phone number and tries to reach me. tl;dr: how do I detect that a call has been forwarded to my asterisk box?

  • Explorer.exe doesn't start automatically on Boot

    - by leeand00
For some reason when I boot my laptop now (winxp), it doesn't start explorer.exe automatically; I'm left with a desktop background and a mouse pointer. I have to run taskman and start explorer.exe manually. Recently I had Spyware Dr. detect a severe threat, and I was wondering if there was anyway to re-hookup explorer.exe on startup.

  • Python cannot go over internet network

    - by user1642826
I am currently trying to work with python networking and I have reached a bit of a road block. I am not able to network with any computer but localhost, which is kind-of useless with what networking is concerned. I have tried on my local network, from one computer to another, and I have tried over the internet, both fail. The only time I can make it work is if (when running on the server's computer) it's ip is set as 'localhost' or '192.168.2.129' (computers ip). I have spent hours going over opening ports with my isp and have gotten nowhere, so I decided to try this forum. I have my windows firewall down and I have included some pictures of important screen shots. I have no idea what the problem is and this has spanned almost a year of calls to my isp. The computer, modem, and router have all been replaced in that time. Screen shots: import socket import threading import socketserver class ThreadedTCPRequestHandler(socketserver.BaseRequestHandler): def handle(self): data = self.request.recv(1024) cur_thread = threading.current_thread() response = "{}: {}".format(cur_thread.name, data) self.request.sendall(b'worked') class ThreadedTCPServer(socketserver.ThreadingMixIn, socketserver.TCPServer): pass def client(ip, port, message): sock = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) sock.connect((ip, port)) try: sock.sendall(message) response = sock.recv(1024) print("Received: {}".format(response)) finally: sock.close() if __name__ == "__main__": # Port 0 means to select an arbitrary unused port HOST, PORT = "192.168.2.129", 9000 server = ThreadedTCPServer((HOST, PORT), ThreadedTCPRequestHandler) ip, port = server.server_address # Start a thread with the server -- that thread will then start one # more thread for each request server_thread = threading.Thread(target=server.serve_forever) # Exit the server thread when the main thread terminates server_thread.daemon = True server_thread.start() print("Server loop running in thread:", server_thread.name) ip = '12.34.56.789' print(ip, port) client(ip, port, b'Hello World 1') client(ip, port, b'Hello World 2') client(ip, port, b'Hello World 3') server.shutdown() I do not know where the error is occurring. I get this error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\Dr.Frev\Desktop\serverTest.py", line 43, in <module> client(ip, port, b'Hello World 1') File "C:\Users\Dr.Frev\Desktop\serverTest.py", line 18, in client sock.connect((ip, port)) socket.error: [Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it Any help will be greatly appreciated. *if this isn't a proper forum for this, could someone direct me to a more appropriate one.

  • Qt drag & drop button; drop not detecting

    - by Thomas Verbeke
    I'm creating a 2D game in QT and i'm trying to implement a drag & drop into my program. For some reason the drop is not registered: qDebug should print a message on dropping but this doesn't happen. #include "dialog.h" #include "ui_dialog.h" #include "world.h" #include <vector> Dialog::Dialog(QWidget *parent) : QDialog(parent), ui(new Ui::Dialog) { ui->setupUi(this); scene = new QGraphicsScene(this); ui->graphicsView->setScene(scene); MySquare *item; QGraphicsRectItem *enemyItem; World *myWorld = new World(); std::vector<Tile*> tiles = myWorld->createWorld(":/texture.jpg"); int count = 0; foreach (Tile *tile, tiles){ count++; item = new MySquare(tile->getXPos()*4,tile->getYPos()*4,4,4); item->setBrush(QColor(tile->getValue()*255,tile->getValue()*255,tile->getValue()*255)); item->setAcceptDrops(true); scene->addItem(item); } player = new MySquare(10,20,10,10); player->setAcceptDrops(true); scene->addItem(player); //drag & drop part QPushButton *pushButton = new QPushButton("Click Me",this); connect(pushButton,SIGNAL(pressed()),this,SLOT(makeDrag())); setAcceptDrops(true); } void Dialog::makeDrag() { QDrag *dr = new QDrag(this); // The data to be transferred by the drag and drop operation is contained in a QMimeData object QMimeData *data = new QMimeData; data->setText("This is a test"); // Assign ownership of the QMimeData object to the QDrag object. dr->setMimeData(data); // Start the drag and drop operation dr->start(); } mysquare.cpp #include "mysquare.h" MySquare::MySquare(int _x,int _y, int _w, int _h) { isPlayer=false; Pressed=false; setFlag(ItemIsMovable); setFlag(ItemIsFocusable); setAcceptDrops(true); color=Qt::red; color_pressed = Qt::green; x = _x; y = _y; w = _w; h = _h; } QRectF MySquare::boundingRect() const { return QRectF(x,y,w,h); } void MySquare::paint(QPainter *painter, const QStyleOptionGraphicsItem *option, QWidget *widget) { QRectF rec = boundingRect(); QBrush brush(color); if (Pressed){ brush.setColor(color); } else { brush.setColor(color_pressed); } painter->fillRect(rec,brush); painter->drawRect(rec); } void MySquare::mousePressEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event) { Pressed=true; update(); QGraphicsItem::mousePressEvent(event); qDebug() << "mouse Pressed"; } void MySquare::mouseReleaseEvent(QGraphicsSceneMouseEvent *event) { Pressed=false; update(); QGraphicsItem::mousePressEvent(event); qDebug() << "mouse Released"; } void MySquare::keyPressEvent(QKeyEvent *event){ int x = pos().x(); int y = pos().y(); //key handling QGraphicsItem::keyPressEvent(event); } void MySquare::dropEvent(QDropEvent *event) { qDebug("dropEvent - square"); // Unpack dropped data and handle it the way you want qDebug("Contents: %s", event->mimeData()->text().toLatin1().data()); } void MySquare::dragMoveEvent(QDragMoveEvent *event){ qDebug("dragMoveEvent - square "); event->accept(); } void MySquare::dragEnterEvent(QDragEnterEvent *event){ event->setAccepted(true); qDebug("dragEnterEvent - square"); event->acceptProposedAction(); } void MySquare::setBrush(QColor _color){ color = _color; color_pressed = _color; update(); //repaint } edit; there is no problem with qDebug() i'm just using it to test them i'm inside the drag events..which i'm not

  • Image/"most resembling pixel" search optimization?

    - by SigTerm
    The situation: Let's say I have an image A, say, 512x512 pixels, and image B, 5x5 or 7x7 pixels. Both images are 24bit rgb, and B have 1bit alpha mask (so each pixel is either completely transparent or completely solid). I need to find within image A a pixel which (with its' neighbors) most closely resembles image B, OR the pixel that probably most closely resembles image B. Resemblance is calculated as "distance" which is sum of "distances" between non-transparent B's pixels and A's pixels divided by number of non-transparent B's pixels. Here is a sample SDL code for explanation: struct Pixel{ unsigned char b, g, r, a; }; void fillPixel(int x, int y, SDL_Surface* dst, SDL_Surface* src, int dstMaskX, int dstMaskY){ Pixel& dstPix = *((Pixel*)((char*)(dst->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*x + dst->pitch*y)); int xMin = x + texWidth - searchWidth; int xMax = xMin + searchWidth*2; int yMin = y + texHeight - searchHeight; int yMax = yMin + searchHeight*2; int numFilled = 0; for (int curY = yMin; curY < yMax; curY++) for (int curX = xMin; curX < xMax; curX++){ Pixel& cur = *((Pixel*)((char*)(dst->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*(curX & texMaskX) + dst->pitch*(curY & texMaskY))); if (cur.a != 0) numFilled++; } if (numFilled == 0){ int srcX = rand() % src->w; int srcY = rand() % src->h; dstPix = *((Pixel*)((char*)(src->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*srcX + src->pitch*srcY)); dstPix.a = 0xFF; return; } int storedSrcX = rand() % src->w; int storedSrcY = rand() % src->h; float lastDifference = 3.40282347e+37F; //unsigned char mask = for (int srcY = searchHeight; srcY < (src->h - searchHeight); srcY++) for (int srcX = searchWidth; srcX < (src->w - searchWidth); srcX++){ float curDifference = 0; int numPixels = 0; for (int tmpY = -searchHeight; tmpY < searchHeight; tmpY++) for(int tmpX = -searchWidth; tmpX < searchWidth; tmpX++){ Pixel& tmpSrc = *((Pixel*)((char*)(src->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*(srcX+tmpX) + src->pitch*(srcY+tmpY))); Pixel& tmpDst = *((Pixel*)((char*)(dst->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*((x + dst->w + tmpX) & dstMaskX) + dst->pitch*((y + dst->h + tmpY) & dstMaskY))); if (tmpDst.a){ numPixels++; int dr = tmpSrc.r - tmpDst.r; int dg = tmpSrc.g - tmpDst.g; int db = tmpSrc.g - tmpDst.g; curDifference += dr*dr + dg*dg + db*db; } } if (numPixels) curDifference /= (float)numPixels; if (curDifference < lastDifference){ lastDifference = curDifference; storedSrcX = srcX; storedSrcY = srcY; } } dstPix = *((Pixel*)((char*)(src->pixels) + sizeof(Pixel)*storedSrcX + src->pitch*storedSrcY)); dstPix.a = 0xFF; } This thing is supposed to be used for texture generation. Now, the question: The easiest way to do this is brute force search (which is used in example routine). But it is slow - even using GPU acceleration and dual core cpu won't make it much faster. It looks like I can't use modified binary search because of B's mask. So, how can I find desired pixel faster? Additional Info: It is allowed to use 2 cores, GPU acceleration, CUDA, and 1.5..2 gigabytes of RAM for the task. I would prefer to avoid some kind of lengthy preprocessing phase that will take 30 minutes to finish. Ideas?

  • How to edit item in a listbox shown from reading a .csv file?

    - by Shuvo
I am working in a project where my application can open a .csv file and read data from it. The .csv file contains the latitude, longitude of places. The application reads data from the file shows it in a static map and display icon on the right places. The application can open multiple file at a time and it opens with a new tab every time. But I am having trouble in couple of cases When I am trying to add a new point to the .csv file opened. I am able to write new point on the same file instead adding a new point data to the existing its replacing others and writing the new point only. I cannot use selectedIndexChange event to perform edit option on the listbox and then save the file. • How to rename Ubuntu One folders? Locked by syncdaemon?

    - by ENG_ACK
tl;dr: Does Ubuntu One detect renamed synced folders? I'm trying to rename a large synced folder ('Sync locally' checked) outside of Ubuntu One, but still inside the home folder on Windows. Attempting to do so results in an error message: Cannot rename foldernamehere: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. Quitting ubuntuone-syncdaemon and renaming results in Ubuntu One not finding the synced folder (folder in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt becomes grayed out). Ticking 'Sync locally' again causes Ubuntu One to begin downloading the synced folder with it's old name and ignoring the renamed folder. Is there any way to locally rename a synced folder short of reuploading the entire folder under a new name? Thanks for the help!

  • Find Nearest Object

    - by ultifinitus
I have a fairly sizable game engine created, and I'm adding some needed features, such as this, how do I find the nearest object from a list of points? In this case, I could simply use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance, and check the results. I know I can't simply add x and y, because that's the distance to the object, if you only took right angle turns. However I'm wondering if there's something else I could do? I also have a collision system, where essentially I turn objects into smaller objects on a smaller grid, kind of like a minimap, and only if objects exist in the same gridspace do I check for collisions, I could do the same thing, only make the gridspace larger to check for closeness. (rather than checking every. single. object) however that would take additional setup in my base class and clutter up the already cluttered object. TL;DR Question: Is there something efficient and accurate that I can use to detect which object is closest, based on a list of points and sizes?

  • dual-boot (win-xp/ubu12.04) graphics card for ubu-desktop/win-xp-games

    - by iole1
for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there). From other questions here and some webstigation I think I'd like to go for a Nvidia card, I've been trying to figure out what models fit the system req's but it seems they use different kind of model numbers so I don't get any wiser. tl;dr: will http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-620-oem/specifications run Guild Wars 2 http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=938 Or what is the worst card from nVidia that will run GW2 smoothly and work well in Ubuntu 12.04 Thanks!

  • PowerShell for breakfast, lunch and dinner

    - by Enrique Lima
Actually, for snacks too, and it is nearly everywhere I turn. If I do Microsoft Exchange work, I know I will run into it.  Active Directory, SQL Server, TFS, SharePoint, Azure and most recently Lync. All have provided a way to work with PowerShell and it has taken off (as it should). The question many will have is, How do I get started? A couple of ways are available. There are books, sites and blogs that will help you along the way. This will be the start of a series of posts that, my intention at least, will highlight and focus on the main features I have been using with the different products I interact. Here are some useful links to get started … The Master PowerShell book from Dr. Tobias Weltner PowerShell.com Script Center @ Technet

  • Are Language Comparisons Meaningful?

    - by Prasoon Saurav
Dr Bjarne Stroustrup in his book D&E says Several reviewers asked me to compare C++ to other languages. This I have decided against doing. Thereby, I have reaffirmed a long-standing and strongly held view: "Language comparisons are rarely meaningful and even less often fair" . A good comparison of major programming languages requires more effort than most people are willing to spend, experience in a wide range of application areas, a rigid maintenance of a detached and impartial point of view, and a sense of fairness. I do not have the time, and as the designer of C++, my impartiality would never be fully credible. -- The Design and Evolution of C++(Bjarne Stroustrup) Do you people agree with his this statement "Language comparisons are rarely meaningful and even less often fair"? Personally I think that comparing a language X with Y makes sense because it gives many more reasons to love/despise X/Y :-P What do you people think?

  • Does XNA 4 support 3D affine transformations for 2D images?

    - by Paul Baker Salt Shaker
Looooong story short I'm essentially trying to code Mode 7 in XNA. Before I continue bashing my brains out in research and various failed matrix math equations; I just want to make sure that XNA supports this just out-of-the-box (so to speak). I'd prefer not to have to import other libraries, because I want to learn how it works myself that way I understand the whole thing better. However that's all for naught if it won't work at all. So no opengl, directx, etc if possible (will eventually do it just to optimize everything, but not for now). tl;dr: Can I has Mode 7 in XNA?

  • When to use shared libraries for a web framework?

    - by CamelBlues
tl;dr: I've found myself hosting a bunch of sites running on the same web framework (symfony 1.4). Would it be helpful if I moved all of the shared library code into the same directory and shared it across the sites? more I see some advantages to this: Each site takes up less disk space Library updates (an unlikely scenario) can take place across all sites I also see some disadvantages, mostly in terms of a single point of failure and the inability to have sites using different versions of the framework. My real concern, though, is performance. I hypothesize that I will see a performance increase, since the PHP code will already be cached for all sites when they call the framework. Is this a correct hypothesis?

  • Random Map Generation in Java

    - by Thomas Owers
I'm starting/started a 2D tilemap RPG game in Java and I want to implement random map generation. I have a list of different tiles, (dirt/sand/stone/grass/gravel etc) along with water tiles and path tiles, the problem I have is that I have no idea where to start on generating a map randomly. It would need to have terrain sections (Like a part of it will be sand, part dirt etc) Similar to how Minecraft is where you have different biomes and they seamlessly transform into each other. Lastly I would also need to add random paths into this as well going in different directions all over the map. I'm not asking anyone to write me all the code or anything, just piont me into the right direction please. tl;dr - Generate a tile map with biomes, paths and make sure the biomes seamlessly go into each other. Any help would be much appreciated! :) Thank you.
