  I'd like to host an image gallery for family and friends. Is there any solution out here which offers: albums ( I expect most do ); ability to specificy tags/persons/places etc, similar to what f-spot does; an API to upload multiple photos or just a bulk uploader; block out unregistered users; allow users to leave comments. Update: please do assume that I'm able to host the service myself if I've asked for a self-hosted solution.

• DNS resolution Windows 7 & browsing to locally hosted web site

  We host two Intranet sites, http://intranet/ and http://sales.intranet/, both on the same server on the LAN. Local DNS (a Windows 2003 Server) was updated and both hostnames are configured to be CNAMEs that point to the FQDN name of the server on which they're hosted. On the LAN, Windows XP Professional clients can browse to both sites. However, Windows 7 Professional clients can browse to the main Intranet site, but not the Sales Intranet (neither using Firefox 3 nor Internet Explorer 8). Using nslookup on the command line on the Windows 7 boxes, intranet and sales.intranet both correctly resolve as CNAMEs of the server hosting them, and that in turn correctly resolves to the host's IP address. So the Q is... can anyone think why this might be, or what test to try next? Thank you for any suggestions!

• How can I view my IIS hosted sites on other machines on my network

  Hello, at home i have a simple network setup conatining 2 machines and 1 belkin router. On one machine i have a site hosted with IIS7. Rather than the standard localhost/index.htm address i have added an entry in the HOSTS file pointing the local ip (127.0.0.1) to this domain - www.mysite.dev. i can access the site with www.mysite.dev with no problem. what i would like to do is be able to view this site from my other machine on the network. initially i assumed this could be done with a url like so MACHINE-NAME/www.mysite.dev, but the connection always times out. But I can ping MACHINE-NAME without problems. For testing purposes i have diabled the windows firewall on both machines but to no joy. Like a typical web developer, my techy/network skills are pretty poor. Can anyone see where im going wrong ?? thank you for your time Truegilly :)

  I am helping a friend with his website, and am having a problem with his webmail configuration, which I suspect is due to a misconfigured MX record. His domain is registered and hosted by hostmonster, they have a webmail option. A record: Host Points To TTL webmail 12.345.789.101 14400 CNAME: mail webmail.d.com 14400 MX Record: 0 @ mail.d.com 14400 I've created an email account on hostmonster, [email protected]: however, when I sent an email to this account, it appears to be routing to /dev/null. I know that it's not actually, but am unsure of the steps I can take to track this down? I've tried using dig, but am unsure where to start. How can I track down where this email is being routed to?

• Cannot connect to a 2008 sql server named instance hosted in a azure virtual machine

  When I try to connect to a named instance in a SQL SERVER hosted in a azure VM I get this message: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) The problem is the sql browser is not working properly, when I start the sql browser service it closes after a few seconds and the event log says "There are no instances of SQL Server or SQL Server Analysis Services." But I do have a named instance, I can connect locally to this instance. I've re-installed sql browser and the instance but ii does not work. The host is a azure virtual machine windows server 2008 datacenter. Please help. Thank you

• Hosted application, DNS server setup?

  Currently I'm allowing users to have an hosted application. Currently they have to point A-records to our servers (sometimes this is to hard or get's messy). I've seen other players using 2 dns servers, so that the user only needs to change these. I'm willing to implement this, but a lot of questions come up. What should I use for this? Can I use bind? The records need to be generated from a mysql database What type of servers do I need? Is a DNS server taking a lot of load? Currently having around 80K daily visitors. Thanks!

• i am not able to connect to the application hosted on port 80

  I am trying to access an application that is hosted on port 80. When i try the url from my personal computer , the site is not reachable but the same url on the server( which hosts the application) i am able to access the site. When i disable the firewall then i am able to access the site from my pc. So there is some rule which is blocking this port. How do i determine what windows firewall rule is blocking this port. I have disables IIS as well. Kindly point me in the right direction

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

• Lync Server 2010 with Hosted VoIP PBX

  We just deployed Lync Server 2010 in our organization and it is working great so far. The next step for us is to enable enterprise voice so that we can replace our telephones with service that is handled 100% by Lync. This is where I am at a loss. I have a fully deployed Standard Edition Lync server and a hosted VoIP PBX provider with VoIP handsets. I would like to get rid of the handsets and have my company's phone service be handled by Lync client (e.g. someone calls my work number, and Lync rings instead of my old handset that is set up with the PBX) I am new to deploying these types of features. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• Cant access EC2 hosted website

  For some reason, I am unable to access our website www.doccaster.com (Bad request nginx). We are hosted on amazon EC2 with elastic ip associated to it. The weird part is a) I can access it through the public dns url http://ec2-184-73-195-180.compute-1.amazonaws.com b) My co founder who is located in another city can access it via www.doccaster.com. I observed that my instance was failing reachability check, so I launched a new one and assigned it the the elastic ip. I tried to ping the ip address 184.73.195.180 from my machine but no success. Any help will be really appreciated. More details I ran the following command on my server netstat -lntp | grep -E 'apache|httpd' and it displays :::80 for httpd . Is this accurate ? Should it be 0:0:0:80 ? or doesnt matter?

• Two domains hosted on the same server with different root folder shows up the same homepage

  I have hosted two domains from GoDaddy at Linode VPS. They are mobiletoast.com and lesseltechnologies.com Thought the latter site has a separate index folder, whenever I navigate to it, I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The strange thing is, I see the expected page (It works), when I open the site from my mobile phone. But when I open the site from my PC (any browser, without any cache, hard refresh), I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The Linode support team says, they see the correct "It works" page. But I am not able to see that page. • Self Hosted Dropbox Alternative?

  Does anyone know of any self-hosted Dropbox alternatives? We have a need to share files/folders between staff and partners (small scale) and for various reasons we'd prefer to host it ourselves. Sharepoint seems a little too focussed on "check in/check out" and things like webdav/ftp seem a little kludgy. In an ideal world something where you (as an IT person) can setup an area, make a user "owner" and from there they can add their customers would be great. Windows or Virtual Appliance would be ideal.

• Simple server status page hosted externally available for users

  I am looking for any kind of script - can be asp or php or any other web language - that gives me the ability to log outages and the current state of the network for our organisation. This would be similar to any major Telco's "Network Status" page, but I just want to tell the user's out there if the systems are up and running and have a history of recent outages. This would be for our remote user's so they could go to a webpage (externally hosted from our main site) and see that we are currently having problems with our network. • My computer gets hosted when using 3G

  I recently activated 3G(UMTS) connection on my cellular network. I use Nokia S60 phone as a modem while connecting from Scientific Linux 6. While I am able to access net pretty well, the problem is my computer gets hosted. By using ip-address in a web-browser, anyone can access my localhost (running apache), this never happens with my wireline (ADSL) connection. Furthermore, even the Shell prompt changes from: [mach2@localhost ~]$ to [[email protected] ~]$ where XX.XX.XX.XX is the IP of the 3G connection. The very thought of putting my machine 'in the wild' is disconcerting. How can I rectify the situation without disabling services like apache, sshd and others?

• How to find dom0 name from hosted domU

  I'm actually testing RHEL 5.3 with Xen between two servers in order to have a disaster recovery solution. So I'm playing with moving my domU from one dom0 server to the other server. Unfortunatly when somebody else move the domU I don't have any clue where my domain is hosted. I'm wondering where I can't find my dom0 name with inside domU. I'm looking for something like the gzonename command on a solaris sparse zone. I check inside /proc/xen but I don't see anything special except the dom0 kernel release. Does anybody know a wait to find this ?

• Domain in a hosted environment

  We have an application we host in a third party data center for our clients. We have multiple clients running the same application on several racks of servers. Most of our clients require that our servers be SAS70 compliant. Currently each server has it's own set of users and security settings that need to be configured. We are creating scripts to do this, but what would be the risks/advantages of joining all the servers to the domain for User Management and Group policy for enforcing security settings? The rational of some is that if the DC is hacked the whole network would be compromised where as if one stand alone hosted server is hacked everything else should be safe.

• How can I force a major upgrade to not switch to maintenance mode using the old installation package

  I have an installer that I would like to use for a major upgrade. I have done the following: Increased the version number (from a.b.c to a.b.c+1) Changed the ProductCode Kept the same UpgradeCode Made the appropriate entry in the Upgrade table Changed the component ID of an existing component Changed the name of the installer package Changed the PackageCode Basically I've done everything I can think of to force MSI to treat this as a major upgrade. However, when I attempt to install this new package, the installer log says "Product registered: entering maintenance mode" and proceeds to try to find the old installer file (which fails, since the new installer is in a different folder than was used for the original installation, and wasn't even what I wanted to happen). What am I missing? Why does the installer switch to maintenance mode right away rather than perform the major upgrade? Thanks!

• Opening AFOpenFlowView already in landscape mode

  I'm using the open source CoverFlow replacement from here: http://fajkowski.com/blog/2009/08/02/openflow-a-coverflow-api-replacement-for-the-iphone/ When I detect that a certain view has gone from portrait to landscape mode, I instantiate an AFCoverFlowView and push it onto the navigation stack. If I do so in response to (void)didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation The cover flow view comes up as though the phone were still in portrait mode. If I push the view in response to (void)willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation it works perfectly - the view comes up in landscape mode with the phone in landscape mode Unfortunately, the device doesn't reliable get willRotateToInterfaceOrientation messages. I have tried making sure that [[UIDevice currentDevice] beginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications]; is in loadView but that doesn't help with the notificiations. So, my questions are: Is there a way to reliably get willRotateToInterfactOrientation? if not How do I instruct AFCoverFlowView to come up in landscape mode (if the device is already in landscape mode)

  I'd like to be able to switch temporarily from emacs mode to vi mode, since vi mode is sometimes better, but I'm usually half-way through typing something before I realize I want I don't want to switch permanently to vi mode, because I normally prefer emacs mode on the command line, mostly because it's what I'm used to, and over the years many of the keystrokes have become second nature. (As an editor I generally use emacs in viper mode, so that I can use both vi and emacs keystrokes, since I found myself accidentally using them in vi all the time, and screwing things up, and because in some cases I find vi keystrokes more memorable and handy, and in other cases emacs.)

• Internet Explorer 8 EmulateIE7 Mode not working

  I've set up IIS6 to send the following headers Custom Header Name: X-UA-Compatible Custom Header Value: IE=EmulateIE7 that supposed to force IE 8 into IE 7 Compatibility mode. You can read more about it on MSDN . I have noticed by looking in the Developer toolbar that if I have a DTD defined the document mode correctly gets set to IE 7, but the browser mode is IE 8. If the page doesn't have a DTD the document mode gets set to Quirks and Browser Mode once again IE 8. Am I doing something wrong. How do I force IE 8 to set IE 7 Browser mode. Thanks

I have heard of no one who does. What are you for? - perplexedly wondered aged and wise DBA. At least that DBA thought she was aged and wise though each day tried to prove to her that she wasn't. - I know you. You are quite lazy. Why would you do additional clicks to move from window to window? From Tool to tool ? This is irritating, isn't it? I can run windows system commands, sql statements and much more from the same script, from the same query window! - I have all my tools that I‘m used to, I have Management Studio, Cmd, Powershell. They can do anything for me. I don’t need additional tools. - I promise you, you will like me. – the thing continued to whine . - All right, show me. – she gave up. It’s always this way, she thought sadly, - easier to agree than to explain why you don’t want. - Enable me and then think about anything that you always couldn’t do through the management studio and had to use other tools. - Ok. Google for me the list of greatest features of SQL SERVER 2012. - Well... I’m not sure... Think about something else. - Ok, here is something easy for you. I want to check if file folder exists or if file is there. Though, I can easily do this using xp_cmdshell … - This is easy for me. – rejoiced the feature. This is main difference from using xp_cmdshell which is executing commands on sql server itself. Bottomline, use UNC path instead of local path. - Look, there are much more than that. - The SQLCMD feature was getting exited.- You can get IP of your servers, create, rename and drop folders. You can see the contents of any file anywhere and even start different tools from the same query window: Not so aged and wise DBA was getting interested: - I also want to run different scripts on different servers without changing connection of the query window. - Sure, sure! Another great feature that CMDmode is providing us with and giving more power to querying. Use “:” to use additional features, like :connect that allows you to change connection: - Now imagine, you have one script where you have all your changes, like creating staging table on the DWH staging server, adding fact table to DWH itself and updating stored procedures in the server where reporting database is located. - Now, give me more challenges! - Script out a list of stored procedures into the text files. - You can do it easily by using command :out which will write the query results into the specified text file. The output can be the code of the stored procedure or any data. Actually this is the same as changing the query output into the file instead of the grid. - Now, take all of the scripts and run all of them, one by one, on the different server.  - Easily - Come on... I’m sure that you can not... -Why not? Naturally, I can do it using :r commant which is opening a script and executing it. Look, I can also use :setvar command to define an environment variable in SQLCMD mode. Just note that you have to leave the empty string between :r commands, otherwise it’s not working although I have no idea why. - Wow.- She was really impressed. - Ok, I’ll go to try all those… -Wait, wait! I know how to google the SQL SERVER features for you! This example will open chrome explorer with search results for the “SQL server 2012 top features” ( change the path to suit your PC): “Well, this can be probably useful stuff, maybe this feature is really unfairly forgotten”, thought the DBA while going through the dark empty parking lot to her lonely car. “As someone really wise once said: “It is what we think we know that keeps us from learning. Learn, unlearn and relearn”.

• Apache directory structure with multiple hosted languages.

  I just got a new work machine up and running and I'm trying to decide on how to set everything up directory wise. I've done some digging around and really haven't been able to find anything conclusive. I know it's a question with a variety of answers but I'm hoping there's some sort of general guidelines or best practices to go by. With that said, here are a few things specific to my situation. I will be doing actual development and testing on the same machine as the server. It is a single user machine in the sense that I will be the only one working on the machine. There will be multiple hosted languages, specifically PHP and RoR while possibly expanding later. I'd like the setup to translate well to a production environment. With those 3 things in mind there are a couple of things I've had in the back of mind. Seeing as it's a single user machine I haven't been able to decide whether or not I should be working on things out of my home directory or if they should be located outside of it. I'm feeling that outside of a user directory would be better as it would translate better to a production environment, but I'm also not sure if that will come with any permission annoyances or concerns seeing as I'll be working on the same machine. Hosting multiple languages seems like it may be a bit quirky. With PHP I've found you're generally just dumping the project somewhere in the document root where as something like a Rails app you have the entire project and you only want the public directory in the document root. Thanks for any insight, opinion, or just personal preference from experience anyone can offer.
