• How to convince a colleague that code duplication is bad?

  A colleague of mine was implementing a new feature in a project we work on together and he did it by taking a file containing the implementation of a similar feature from the same project, creating a copy of it renaming all the global declarations and slightly modifying the implementation. So we ended up with two large files that are almost identical apart from renaming. I tried to explain that it makes our project more difficult to maintain but he doesn't want to change anything saying that it is easier for him to program in such way and that there is no reason to fix the code if it "ain't broke". How can I convince him that such code duplication is a bad thing? It is related to this questions, but I am more interested in the answers targeted to a technical person (another programmer), for example a reference to an authoritative source like a book would be great. I have already tried simple arguments and haven't succeeded.

• Solr match all aka *:* does not work

  Don't know what I did wrong. I have two indices with identical documents in it. The local index was replicated from a master which responds correctly, so the same solrconfig.xml and schema.xml file. But if I query the index on my local machine with *:* I get 0 docs. (other queries on my local machine are working correct) I tried jetty and tomcat for the local index. no success. The *:* behaviour is crucial for me, because some test cases are failing now. Do you have an idea what could be wrong?

• Merging tables in MySQL - sum up columns

  I have an interesting problem, that i am sure has a simple answer, but i can't seem to find it in the docs. I have two separate database tables, on different servers. They are both identical table schema with the same primary keys. I want to merge the tables together on one server. But, if the row on Server1.Table1 exists in Server2.Table2 then sum up the totals in the columns i specify. Table1{ column_pk, counter }; "test1", 3 "test2", 4 Table2{ column_pk, counter }; "test1", 5 "test2", 6 So after i merge i want: "test1",8 "test2",10 Basically i need to do a mysqldump but instead of it kicking out raw INSERT statements, i need to do a INSERT..ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE statements. What are my options? Appreciate any input, thank you

• Find duplicates lines based on some delimited fileds on line

  Hello, I have a file with lines having some fields delimited by "|". I have to extract the lines that are identical based on some of the fileds (i.e. find lines which contain the same values for fields 1,2,3 12,and 13) Other fields contents have no importance for searching but the whole extracted lines have to be complete. Can anyone tell me how I can do that in KSH scripting (By exemple a script with some arguments (order dependent) that define the fileds separator and the fields which have to be compared to find duplicates lines in input file ) Thanks in advance and kind regards Oli

• Generate MySQL data dump in SQL from PHP

  I'm writing a PHP script to generate SQL dumps from my database for version control purposes. It already dumps the data structure by means of running the appropriate SHOW CREATE .... query. Now I want to dump data itself but I'm unsure about the best method. My requirements are: I need a record per row Rows must be sorted by primary key SQL must be valid and exact no matter the data type (integers, strings, binary data...) Dumps should be identical when data has not changed I can detect and run mysqldump as external command but that adds an extra system requirement and I need to parse the output in order to remove headers and footers with dump information I don't need (such as server version or dump date). I'd love to keep my script as simple as I can so it can be hold in an standalone file. What are my alternatives?

  OK - so I'm sure my confusion here is just a result of being stuck in a "Java mindset" and not understanding how Obj C differs in this case. In Java, I can declare a variable in a class, like this, and each instance of that class will have it's own: MyClass { String myVar; MyClass() { // constructor } } In Obj C I tried to do the same thing by declaring a variable only in the .m file like this: #import "MyClass.h" @implementation MyClass NSString *testVar; @end My expectation here was that this variable has a scope limited to this class. So I created a second class (identical): #import "MySecondClass.h" @implementation MySecondClass NSString *testVar; @end What I'm seeing (and has me baffled) is that changing the variable in one class, affects the value seen in the other class. In fact, if I set a breakpoint, and then "Jump to Definition" of the variable, it takes me to th I've created an extremely small XCode project that demonstrates the problem here Nothing more humbling than moving to a new language :) Thanks in advance.

• SHFileOperation replace file dialog

  Currently, SHFileOperation has some confirm file replacement dialog boxes that ask the user if they would like to replace a file or not. I find these useful, but I would like to be able to modify the scenario in which they occur. Instead, I would like to compare the file contents first with a bool compareFile() function I wrote. Then, if the files are identical the file replacement dialog box will not come up. Assuming, I already have a working compareFile() function, is there a way for me to do this?   hi. I want to make a user interface in which the user can edit two objects at the same time. The main window would have a vertical split view and a form on each side of the view. The problem is that the two forms are identical and I don't want to duplicate the view components in the interface builder. I want to create the form one time and add a reference to it in each side of the split view, each one using a different object source. I could use a NSForm, but the form is not a simple grid of outputTexts and inputText. They have a master table, and diverse kinds of inputs types, like combos, in the detail. How do I create the reusable form using the interface builder? Or how can I do it programmatically? Do I have to create a subclass of NSView and add the individual components in the code? • Django template context not working with imported class

  I'm using Django's templating on appengine, and am having a problem whereby a class I'm importing from another package is not correctly being made available to the template context. Broadly speaking, this is the code. The prop1 is not available in the template in the first example below, but is in the second. MyClass is identical in both cases. This does not work: from module import MyClass context = MyClass() self.response.out.write(template.render(path, context)) This does: class MyClass(object): def __init__(self): self.prop1 = "prop1" context = MyClass() self.response.out.write(template.render(path, context)) If I log the context in the above code I get: <module.MyClass object at 0x107b1e450> when it's imported, and: <__main__.MyClass object at 0x103759390> when it's defined in the same file. Any clues as to what might cause this kind of behaviour?

  I have a method that checks certain things and returns a Boolean based on those checks. It involves a single branching If section that checks about 5 conditions in sequence. If any of those conditions return true, then the method will return true;. If none of the conditions return true, then the method will return false;. Since the code after the If section will only run if none of the conditions are true, then that code is logically identical to including an actual Else statement. So is it a better idea to actually write in the Else statement for this kind of situation?

  Say I have two type classes defined as follows that are identical in function but different in names: class Monad m where (>>=) :: m a -> (a -> m b) -> m b return :: a -> m a class PhantomMonad p where pbind :: p a -> (a -> p b) -> p b preturn :: a -> p b Is there a way to tie these two classes together so something that is an instance of PhantomMonad will automatically be an instance of Monad, or will instances for each class have to be explicitly written?   If you have 3 classes, with the parent class listed first shape- 2d shapes, 3d shapes - circle, sphere When you write your constructor for the circle class, would you ever just initialize the parent Shape object and then your current object, skipping the middle class. It seems to me you could have x,y coordinates for Shape and initialize those in the constructor, and initialize a radius in the circle or sphere class, but in 2d or 3d shape classes, I wouldn't know what to put in the constructor since it seems like it would be identical to shape. So is something like this valid Circle::Circle(int x, int y, int r) : Shape(x, y), r(r) {} I get a compile error of: illegal member initialization: 'Shape' is not a base or member So I wasn't sure if my code was legal or best practice even. Or if instead you'd have the middle class just do what the top level Shape class does TwoDimensionalShape::TwoDimensionalShape(int x, int y) : Shape (x, y) {} and then in the Circle class Circle::Circle(int x, int y, int r) : TwoDimensionalShape(x, y), r(r) {}

All the choices should be unique, so once the option is selected in one combobox, it should be removed from others.   I've been reading all the questions on here but I still don't get it I have two identical tables of considerable size. I would like to update table packages_sorted with data from packages_sorted_temp without destroying the existing data on packages_sorted Table packages_sorted_temp contains data on only 2 columns db_id and quality_rank Table packages_sorted contains data on all 35 columns but quality_rank is 0 The primary key on each table is db_id and this is what I want to trigger the ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE with. • symfony 1.4 embedForm not returning all embedded forms

  I have a form with multiple embedded forms and symfony is not binding all the embedded forms. The layout is a m-to-m layout: activity: id: link: id: activity_id: FOREIGN KEY to activity table other_data_id: FOREIGN KEY to other_data table other_data: id: For instance I have 7 identical embedded forms iterated at the end of each name (ie- form_1, form_2, ..., form_7). With the new and edit forms all the 7 fields display properly, but when I submit the form, the embedded forms after a certain number just aren't in the embedded forms array of the sfForm. I have two different embedded forms, the first form stops binding at 5 and the second form stops binding at 4. I've looked at the array of posted values through $request->getPostParameters(); and all the fields are there. If I manually enter the data into the database, the binding works without a problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

• Git: Make one branch exactly like another

  I am relatively new to Git, and I'm still not very comfortable with it. Right now, I'm looking for the command/options/magic that can make the current branch look like another branch; that is, to merge them, but when a conflict arises, to always choose the difference in the branch that is being merged into the current one. My situation is thus; I have an stable(ish) application on the "master" branch. I also have another branch, called "feature". I basically want to make changes/additions/deletions to feature until I like the new feature I'm working on. Once I feel it is ready, I want to make the master branch look identical to the feature branch. I know this probably isn't a best practice, but as I said, I'm new to Git. I plan on learning how to do more complicated things in the future, but for now, this is all I need. Thanks, SO!

• Mac OS X 10.5 App "not supported on this architecture" cured by copying?

  I have an app that updates itself over the internet, and the updated copy won't run on PowerPC machines (G5) running Leopard (10.5.8). Double-clicking the app produces a message saying "You can't open the application "appname" because it is not supported on this architecture." But here's the weird part: if I duplicate the app using the Finder or using a cp -R command, then the duplicate runs fine! And yet, if I do ls -laeR on both apps, the results are identical. I restarted the machine, and the difference between the two copies was still there. Sometimes, renaming the app made it run. After a few tries, I managed to rename it back to the original name and still have it run. If this was just on one machine, I'd dismiss it as disk corruption, cosmic rays, or a voodoo hex, but it was reported by a customer and then I reproduced it on my own machine. Any ideas what could cause this behavior?

• Call an action from another controller

  I have two different objects: contracts, and task orders. My requirements specify that in order to view the Details for either object, the Url should be "http://.../Contract/Details" or "http://.../TaskOrder/Details" depending on which type. They are both very similar and the details pages are almost identical, so I made a class that can either be a contract or a task order, and has a variable "objectTypeID" that says which type it is. I wrote the action "Details" in the task order controller, but now I want to call that from the contract controller instead of recopying the code. So is there any way to have the url still say ".../Contract/Details" but call the action in the TaskOrder controller instead? I tried using TaskOrderController TOController = new TaskOrderController(); TOController.Details(id); This would have worked except that I can't use the HttpContext.Session anymore, which I used several times in the action.

• AppEngine and Django: including a template file

  As the title suggests, I'm using Google App Engine and Django. I have quite a bit of identical code across my templates and would like to reduce this by including template files. So, in my main application directory I have the python handler file, the main template, and the template I want to include in my main template. I would have thought that including {% include "fileToInclude.html" %} would work on its own but that simply doesn't include anything. I assume I have to set something up, maybe using TEMPLATE_DIRS, but can't figure it out on my own. EDIT: I've tried: TEMPLATE_DIRS = (os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'templates'), ) But to no avail. I'll try some other possibilities too.

  I've missed the memo somewhere, and I hope you'll explain this to me. Why is the eigenclass of an object different from self.class? class Foo def initialize(symbol) eigenclass = class << self self end eigenclass.class_eval do attr_accessor symbol end end end My train of logic that equates the eigenclass with class.self is rather simple: class << self is a way of declaring class methods, rather than instance methods. It's a shortcut to def Foo.bar. So within the reference to the class object, returning self should be identical to self.class. This is because class << self would set self to Foo.class for definition of class methods/attributes. Am I just confused? Or, is this a sneaky trick of Ruby meta-programming?

• Extracting Data Daily from MySQL to a Local MySQL DB

  I'm doing some experiments locally that require some data from a production MySQL DB that I only have read access to. The schemas are nearly identical with the exception of the omission of one column. My goal is to write a script that I can run everyday that extracts the previous day's data and imports it into my local table. The part that I'm most confused about is how to download the data. I've seen names like mysqldump be tossed around but that seems a way to replicate the entire database. I would love to avoid using php seeing as I have no experience with it. I've been creating CSVs but I'm worried about having the data integrity (what if there is a comma in a field or a \n) as well as the size of the CSV (there are several hundred thousand rows per day).

• The standard map/associative-array structure to use in flash actionscript 3?

  I'm relatively new to flash, and is confused about what I should use to store and retrieve key value pairs. After some googling I've found various map-like things to choose from: 1) Use a Object: var map:Object = new Object(); map["key"] = "value"; The problem is that it seems to lack some very basic features. For example to even get the size of map I'd have to write a util method. 2) Use a Dictionary What does this standard library class provide over the simple object? It seems silly for it to exist if it's functionally identical to Object. 3) Go download some custom HashMap/HashTable implementation from the web. I've used a lot of modern languages, and this is the first time I haven't been able to find a library implementation of an associative array within 5 minutes. So I'd like to get some best-practice advice from an experienced flash developer. Thanks!
