  I am a software developer with 10+ years commercial experience, I am comfortable with nearly all of imperative languages. But I realized that most of employers prefer not candidates who is able to deliver good software but those who is trained to answer questions like "what are ten differences between pointers and references in C++" or "what this messy code fragment will print". Last time I have read a book on C++ 15 years ago in secondary school and yes, that was Bjarne Stroustrup. But today I need something quick, without long philosophical explanations about polymorphism etc but with focus to silly interview tests. So, can you recommend any short and effective books to refresh my theoretical knowledge? Thank you.

Now that I have a better understanding of the different frameworks, I have a very simple question: With a basic understanding, but very limited experience with writing tests with rails' built in testing framework (basic assertions), would it be okay for me to jump directly to testing with RSpec, Webrat, and Cucamber? • Reset JPA generated value between tests

  I'm running spring + hibernate + JUnit with springJunit4runner and transactional set to default rollback I'm using in-memory derbydb as Database. Hibernate is used as a JPA Provider and I am successfully testing CRUD kinds of stuff. However, I have a problem with JPA and the behaviour of @GeneratedValue If I run one of my tests in isolation, two entitys are persisted with id 1 and 2. If i run the whole test suite the ids are instead 6 and 7. Spring does rollbacks just fine so there are only these two entitys in the database after addition and of course zero before. But behaviour of @GeneratedValue doesn't allow me to reliable findById unless I would return the Id from the dao.add(Entity e) //method I don't feel like doing that for the sake of testing, or is it a good practise to return the entity that was persisted so I should be doing it anyway?

  Hey I wrote a LudoGame and now I like to test it with a little GuiceInjection^^ I have an Interface IDie for my die. Now for the game I only need an IDie instead of a realdie = in tests I simply give the LudoGame a MokeDie to set up the Numbers I like to roll. The IDie has only one method: roll() which returns a int. BUT the mokeDie now has another public method: sendNextNumber() (should be clear what this does^^) Now I like to @Inject a Die and if @UseMokeDie is before a Test I'll like to pass the MokeDie but I'm very new to Guice... • How do you: Symfony functional test on a secure app?

  Im trying to perform some function tests in symfony 1.4. My application is secure so the tests return 401 response codes not 200 as expected. I've tried creating a context and authentication the user prior to performing the test but to no avail. Any suggestions? Do I need to pass sfContext to the sfTestFunctional? Edit: Clarification: By "integrating", I mean that two or more services should be seamlessly connected, and that connection would benefit the user. • How can I avoid "Your system is running low on virtual memory" pop-up?

  Our application sometimes uses a lot of memory, and this is expected. But when we test it under high load on Windows XP, we usually get the very annoying "Your system is running low on virtual memory" popup, and this prevents our automated, unattended, tests to run through... Is it possible to prevent this popup to appear, and just have the allocation fail? The app will handle it gracefully, and tests will go on... We are using Windows XP, but if a solution only exists on later versions, I'd be happy to know anyway.

• Is there a way to automatically grab all the elements on the page using Selenium?

  When creating tests for .Net applications, I can use the White library to find all elements of a given type. I can then write these elements to an Xml file, so they can be referenced and used for GUI tests. This is much faster than manually recording each individual element's info, so I would like to do the same for web applications using Selenium. I haven't been able to find any info on this yet. I would like to be able to search for every element of a given type and save its information (location/XPath, value, and label) so I can write it to a text file later.

  There is a new version of jtreg available. The primary new feature is support for tests that have been written for use with TestNG, the popular open source testing framework. TestNG is supported by a variety of tools and plugins, which means that it is now possible to develop tests for OpenJDK using those tools, while still retaining the ability to have the tests be part of the OpenJDK test suite, and run with a single test harness, jtreg. jtreg can be downloaded from the OpenJDK jtreg page: http://openjdk.java.net/jtreg. TestNG support jtreg supports both single TestNG tests, which can be freely intermixed with other types of jtreg tests, and groups of TestNG tests. A single TestNG test class can be compiled and run by providing a test description using the new action tag: @run testng classname The test will be executed by using org.testng.TestNG. No main method is required. A group of TestNG tests organized in a standard package hierarchy can also be compiled and run by jtreg. Any such group must be identified by specifying the root directory of the package hierarchy. You can either do this in the top level TEST.ROOT file, or in a TEST.properties file in any subdirectory enclosing the group of tests. In either case, add a line to the file of the form: TestNG.dirs = dir ... Directories beginning with '/' are evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite; otherwise they are evaluated relative to the directory containing the declaring file. In particular, note that you can simply use "TestNG.dirs = ." in a TEST.properties file in the root directory of the test group's package hierarchy. No additional test descriptions are necessary, but test descriptions containing information tags, such as @bug, @summary, etc are permitted. All the Java source files in the group will be compiled if necessary, before any of the tests in the group are run. The selected tests within the group will be run, one at a time, using org.testng.TestNG. Library classes The specification for the @library tag has been extended so that any paths beginning with '/' will be evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite. In addition, some bugs have been fixed that prevented sharing the compiled versions of library classes between tests in different directories. Note: This has uncovered some issues in tests that use a combination of @build and @library tags, such that some tests may fail unexpectedly with ClassNotFoundException. The workaround for now is to ensure that library classes are listed before the test classes in any @build tags. To specify one or more library directories for a group of TestNG tests, add a line of the following form to the TEST.properties file in the root directory of the group's package hierarchy: lib.dirs = dir ... As before, directories beginning with '/' are evaluated relative to the root directory of the test suite; otherwise they are evaluated relative to the directory containing the declaring file. The libraries will be available to all classes in the group; you cannot specify different libraries for different tests within the group. Coming soon ...   I am using the latest version of the Komodo IDE, PEAR and PHPUnit with PHP version 5.3.0. When I run the unit tests for my Komodo project the tests run correctly, but regardless of whether there are any tests to run or not I get shown the error: --------------------------- PHP Error --------------------------- parse error in Unknown on line 7 --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Everything works fine despite this error but it is irritating to see every time I run my tests. Furthermore, running the unit tests from the command line does not trigger any kind of error, suggesting that this is a problem with Komodo. How can I fix the error or, at the very least, stop it from showing up.

• Sharepoint/WSS Reporting Services Integration woes

  after a number of failed attempts i seem to have successfully installed the Reporting services add-in to my WSS farm. However, I seem to be missing most of the enhanced functionality eg no report library template, no report center site template. the only additional functionality available is the report viewer web part. background: 2 server WSS 3.0 farm with CA (Central admin) WFE (web front end) and reporting services addin installed on 1, and SQL05 SP2 with Reporting services (RS) and all databases installed on other. I have a VM environment set up and have rolled this back and repeated a number of times. I have configured RS within CA and activated 'Report Server INtegration Feature'. Within the 'site settings' I have a 'Reporting Services' heading with a 'manage shared schedules' item/link, not sure if there should be other options? I was of the understanding that to view reports within sharepoint i could either create a new site using the 'report center' template or add a report library to an existing site, neither of which seems available I am at a loss as to what to do, as all online information seems to do with dealing with installation issues/errors, which i seem to have eventually got past

• Why are my functional tests failing?

  I have generated some scaffolding for my rails app. I am running the generated tests and they are failing. for example test "should create area" do assert_difference('Area.count') do post :create, :area => { :name => 'area1' } end assert_redirected_to area_path(assigns(:area)) end This test is failing saying that : 1) Failure: test_should_create_area(AreasControllerTest) [/test/functional/areas_controller_test.rb:16]: "Area.count" didn't change by 1. <3 expected but was <2. There is only one field in the model : name. I am populating this so it cant be because I am failing to populate the only field. I can run the site and create an area with the name 'area1'. So reality is succeeding, but the test is failing. I cant ask why its failing, because Im sure theres not enough information here for anyone here to know why. Im just stuck at knowing what avenues to go down to work out why the test is failing. Even putting puts into the code dont print out... What steps can I take to track this down?

• VS2010 / Target Framework = 3.5 / Building on Continuous Integration Server

  I'm checking into upgrading to VS2010. Our production servers only have 3.5 Framework and it will be 6-9 months before they are updated. We also have a Continuous Integration Server, running CruiseControl.NET (CC.NET). It has the 3.5 Framework on it as well. Our implementation of CC.NET mainly calls msbuild.exe MySolution.msbuild. (We encapsulate most of the build logic into .msbuild files fyi) Inside the .msbuild file, the following is the "Build" syntax: < Target Name="Build" DependsOnTargets="Checkout" < MSBuild Projects="$(WorkingCheckout)\MySolution.sln" Targets="Build" Properties="Configuration=$(Configuration)" < Output TaskParameter="TargetOutputs" ItemName="TargetOutputsItemName"< /Output < /MSBuild < /Target (A few spaces added to make it display here) =========== I know the VS2010 can "Target" the 3.5 Framework. My question is what happens when I have a VS2010 dev machine, and I check the VS2010 .sln and .csproj(s) files into source control (svn, btw).....will the CC.NET machine ~~which only have the 3.5 Framework installed on it........be able to build the .sln ? I guess I could test it, but the catch22 is that I don't have VS2010 (yet). So I'm asking before I try (the trial or a real install. ............. Any ideas what will happen? I guess the crux question is, what will happen. c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\MSBuild.exe "MyVS2010SolutionFile.sln" ?? My hopeful goal would be, allow the developers to have VS2010 (now!), and it still be "ok" for the CC.NET machine and the Production Servers which will only have the 3.5 Framework on them for the foreseeable future. Just to be clear, developers NEVER create deployable builds. Only the CC.NET machine produces builds that will be pushed as production builds. Any help?

• E-commerce platform for custom application integration

  We are building an online subscription-based website and I'm looking for recommendations on which e-commerce platform to use for the checkout process. Requirements include: Only four products. The sign-up process of the site is heavily customized, and after checkout the user should automatically get logged into the subscriber area. Subscriptions will last one year and can be renewed manually. Support for coupons/discount codes at a later point. Since the entire application is custom, we've weighed building a custom checkout but are strongly leaning towards using existing software to avoid having to build lots of admin reporting as well as a coupon engine down the road. The two questions we're pondering are: Is it better to a) build our application custom and use whatever e-commerce software we select just for the payment piece, or b) use the e-commerce software as the basis and build our application around it/as a module/etc? Which e-commerce platform should we use? I've looked into a variety of off the shelf e-commerce software, but it's not clear to me which would be easiest to integrate with. I've researched on the Web and looked at many of the threads on SO to compiled a list of potential candidates: www.magentocommerce.com/ (seems difficult to integrate with) www.prestashop.com/ www.nopcommerce.com/ www.opencart.com/ www.cubecart.com/ www.spreecommerce.com/ www.interspire.com/ www.tradingeye.com/ We're most concerned with the level of effort required with ramping up on the software and then doing the integration with our custom functionality. We're most proficient with PHP, ASP.NET and some ROR and are only considering those technologies. We prefer open source, but would be open to commercial if there's a significant upside. Any experiences with similar projects and advice is greatly appreciated.

  seam iText integration seems to use older version of iText jars, would it be possible to use the latest iText 5.0.2 specific jars as part of the maven dependencies.   I am using CruiseControl.net for continous integration. I've created a repository for my project using VisualSvn server (uses Windows Authentication). Both the servers are hosted in the same system (Os-Microsoft Windows Server 2003 sp2). When i force build the project using CruiseControl.net "Failed task(s): Svn: CheckForModifications" is shown as the message. • Workflow UI Integration - is WF a good approach?

  Somewhat similar to this question, except we haven't decided that we're going with WF yet. I'm working on designing a system that requires a series of decisions and activities on a "work object," so I naturally began to consider workflow, specifically WF. I'm aware that this is possible, but I'm not sure that WF is the best approach for this type of code, as the user interaction may be required at many different points through the entire workflow, and the workflow will drive what data entry screens are needed. We are using a WinForms/ASP.NET web forms package for UI, which is homegrown and difficult to push deployments on, so something like SharePoint integration is out of the question. Our back-end is DB2, and the workflow code (whether it's in WF or otherwise) will need to interact with that as well. I guess the bottom line is, should we look into using WF for this, or would we be better served just coding it ourselves? Can WF easily integrate data entry screens to capture information that can be used further on in the workflow?

• Ruby: what is the pitfall in this simple code excerpt that tests variable existence

  I'm starting with Ruby, and while making some test samples, I've stumbled against an error in the code that I don't understand why it happens. The code pretends to tests if a variable finn is defined?() and if it is defined, then it increments it. If it isn't defined, then it will define it with value 0 (zero). As the code threw an error, I started to decompose it in small pieces and run it, to better trace where the error was comming from. The code was run in IRB irb 0.9.5(05/04/13), using ruby 1.9.1p378 First I certify that the variable finn is not yet defined, and all is ok: ?> finn NameError: undefined local variable or method `finn' for main:Object from (irb):134 from /home/paulo/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/irb:15:in `<main>' >> Then I certify that the following inline-condition executes as expected, and all is ok: ?> ((defined?(finn)) ? (finn+1):(0)) => 0 And now comes the code that throws the error: ?> finn=((defined?(finn)) ? (finn+1):(0)) NoMethodError: undefined method `+' for nil:NilClass from (irb):143 from /home/paulo/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/irb:15:in `<main>' I was expecting that the code would not throw any error, and that after executing the variable finn would be defined with a first value of 0 (zero). But instead, the code thows the error, and finn get defined but with a value of nil. >> finn => nil Where might the error come from?!? Why does the inline-condition work alone, but not when used for the finn assignment? Any help apreciated :)

• Unit tests and Test Runner problems under .Net 4.0

  Hi there, We're trying to migrate a .Net 3.5 solution into .Net 4.0, but are experiencing complications with the testing frameworks that can operate using an assembly that is built using version 4.0 of the .Net Framework. Previously, we used NUnit 2.4.3.0 and NCover 1.5.8.0 within our NAnt scripts, but NUnit 2.4.3.0 doesn't like .Net 4.0 projects. So, we upgraded to a newer version of the NUnit framework within the test project itself, but then found that NCover 1.5.8.0 doesn't support this version of NUnit. We get errors in the code saying words to the effect of the assembly was built using a newer version of the .Net Framework than is currently in use, as it's using .Net Framework 2.0 to run the tools. We then tried using Gallio's Icarus test runner GUI, but found that this and MbUnit only support up to version 3.5 of the .Net Frameword and the result is "the tests will be ignored". In terms of the coverage side of things (for reporting into CruiseControl.net), we have found that PartCover is a good candidate for substituting-out NCover, (as the newer version of NCover is quite dear, and PartCover is free), but this is a few steps down the line yet, as we can't get the test runners to work first!! Can any shed any light on a testnig framework that will run under .Net 4.0 in the same way as I've described above? If not, I fear we may have to revert back to using .Net 3.5 until the manufacturers of the tooling that we're currently using have a chance to upgrade to .Net 4.0. Thanks.

• _Painless_ integration of Eclipse with Vim?

  Hi, Has anyone managed to get Vim integrated into Eclipse painlessly? I just want to use Vim for the editor while retaining the general Eclipse interface. I have tried using Eclim plugin but the editor seemed to crash more often than work (the site said that the editor replacement functionality is still beta). On the flip side, is there any IDE which matches Eclipse's functionality -- mainly the integration with SVN, ant, etc. -- and is also able to use Vim? I mostly use eclipse for SAS SCL, Java and Javascript programming and find the eclipse editor too "mouse-y". I'd also like, in a perfect world, to use vimdiff as a diff viewer for SVN (we use TortoiseSVN) while checking for diffs or conflicts during merge etc. I admit I havent spent a lot of time trying to get these things to work. I feel guilty about spending too much time on potential wild-goose-chases while my other team members are working away at their code, perfectly content with all that eclipse has to offer. Edit: Just found this while desperately browsing around: Vim plugin.. Any experience using this? Its saturday afternoon in Kiwi land, so I'll try it later and update if no one has an opinion. From the claims on the site, it sounds perfect.

• Selenium tests not building due to NUnit error (Mono+OS X)

  I'm running Selenium RC on my Mac and driving my tests using NUnit in C#. My problem is that when I try and build a simple test in Mono I get the following error. Error CS0433: The imported type `NUnit.Framework.Assert' is defined multiple times (CS0433) (TestProject) When I comment out the Assert's it runs fine. • Weird .net 4.0 exception when running unit tests

  Hi guys I am receiving the following exception when trying to run my unit tests using .net 4.0 under VS2010 with moq 3.1. Attempt by security transparent method 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test.Specs_for_Core.When_using_base.Can_create_mapper()' to access security critical method 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.Assert.IsNotNull(System.Object)' failed. Assembly 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is marked with the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute, and uses the level 2 security transparency model. Level 2 transparency causes all methods in AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assemblies to become security transparent by default, which may be the cause of this exception. The test I am running is really straight forward and looks something like the following: [TestMethod] public void Can_create_mapper() { this.SetupTest(); var mockMapper = new Moq.Mock<IMapper>().Object; this._Resolver.Setup(x => x.Resolve<IMapper>()).Returns(mockMapper).Verifiable(); var testBaseDa = new TestBaseDa(); var result = testBaseDa.TestCreateMapper<IMapper>(); Assert.IsNotNull(result); //<<< THROWS EXCEPTION HERE Assert.AreSame(mockMapper, result); this._Resolver.Verify(); } I have no idea what this means and I have been looking around and have found very little on the topic. The closest reference I have found is this http://dotnetzip.codeplex.com/Thread/View.aspx?ThreadId=80274 but its not very clear on what they did to fix it... Anyone got any ideas?

• Multiple responses from identical calls in asynch QUnit + Mockjax tests

  I'm trying to test some jQuery ajax code using QUnit and Mockjax and have it return different JSON for different tests, like this: $(document).ready(function() { function functionToTest() { return $.getJSON('/echo/json/', { json: JSON.stringify({ "won't": "run" }) }); } module("first"); test("first test", function() { stop(); $.mockjax({ url: '/echo/json/', responseText: JSON.stringify({ hello: 'HEYO!' }) }); functionToTest().done(function(json) { ok(true, json.hello); start(); }); }); test("second test", function() { stop(); $.mockjax({ url: '/echo/json/', responseText: JSON.stringify({ hello: 'HELL NO!' }) }); functionToTest().done(function(json) { ok(true, json.hello); start(); }); }); }); Unfortunately it returns the same response for each call, and order can't be guaranteed, so was wondering how I could set it up so that it was coupled to the actual request and came up with this: $.mockjax({ url: '/echo/json/', response: function(settings) { if (JSON.parse(settings.data.json).order === 1) { this.responseText = JSON.stringify({ hello: 'HEYO!' }); } else { this.responseText = JSON.stringify({ hello: 'HELL NO!' }); } } }); This relies on parameters being sent to the server, but what about requests without parameters, where I still need to test different responses? Is there a way to use QUnit's setup/teardown to do this?
