• Screen gets stuck in a dim setting after waking up

  I've got a laptop that I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. It works a lot better now for a lot of things, but there's one problem I've had happen a few times that never happened under Vista. When I put the system to sleep, then occasionally when I wake it up again, for no apparent reason, the screen's dim. Sometimes it's as if half the backlighting was turned off, and sometimes it's as if all the backlighting was turned off, all except for the mouse pointer, which remains as bright white as ever. Trying to change the screen's brightness does nothing, but rebooting fixes this. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what's causing it or how to make it stop happening?

• Apache, modifying response codes from 404 to 301

  Hi, I'm running a magento installation on an apache server. There are many pages indexed in both google and linked to from external sites. I can't use 301 redirects in a .htaccess file as I can't be sure I will catch all the links. At the moment all requests are rewritten through magento and if a request isn't found magento returns a 404 File not Found. Is there a way of using one of the apache modules to filter the response* from magento and if a 404 Not Found is being sent back then replace the response with a standard 301 Redirect to the home page? E.g. Request to Magento -- Apache -- Rewrite to Magento index.php page -- page processed. Response if request exists -- return results (200) if request doesn't exist -- return 404 -- apache filter change response -- return 301 redirect to / I appreciate any help. Thanks, Jon as far as I am aware mod_rewrite is only used to rewrite requests and doesn't allow the modification of responses.

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem? • Disable pendrive blinking in Linux

  I recently bought a 16GB Super Talent pen drive that seems to work well for running the Ubuntu Live "CD" in persistent mode (see this for how I installed it). One slightly annoying thing, however, is that this pen drive has a bright red light on it that stays on when it's idle. Is there a way to make the light stay off at least when the pen drive is not performing IO? I'm not even sure it's possible to do. If there is (in Linux), I'm guessing it boils down to some ioctl invoked by some utility. Otherwise, I imagine it would involve hacking the firmware or simply opening up the pen drive and removing the LED :D Then again, I guess it keeps the LED on to indicate that the drive should not be removed.

  I'm a Linux guy when it comes to (web) servers for the following reasons Legally free Fast software updates (Unless you're running Cent OS :) Powerful CLI management of services Easy to secure (in terms of users and groups) Web server software is, well, built for Linux... Apache, PHP, Python, etc, are Linux programs that get ported to Windows - I'm 90% sure of this Unless the web server needed to run ASP, I wouldn't use Windows. My boss' IT friend is a Windows guy, though. He recently got a server setup in the office to run Microsoft Exchange and some other shit. What I'm asking is, if he wanted to start running websites on this thing, what would be good reasoning to convince him otherwise? He's not very bright in terms of IT and the IT friend is all Windows. So it's two against one here... What would you say to running a Windows web server?

• Is there a work around to configure brightness or color on a DisplayLink monitor?

  I run 3 monitors in addition to my laptop display at work - two of the monitors are using DisplayLink adapters. I've always thought that all my displays were too bright (and possibly give me headaches?) - even after I reduced their brightness as far as possible using the monitor menus and the nvidia software control panel. Recently I installed f.lux - I love it's "halogen" color profile which has improved my life considerably. The problem is that f.lux has no effect on/will not adjust the color & brightness of my two DisplayLink monitors. F.lux has a faq (#4 under troubleshooting) that addresses this - saying DisplayLink has no support for color calibration so f.lux only works with monitors "directly connected to your computer". Does anyone know of a work around? Specifically a way to use windows color management/profiles (or some other software) to adjust the brightness/color tone of DisplayLink monitors? • Laptop not charging when connected to mains outlet

  I've had this laptop for a few weeks now, it's a Sony Vaio. I went to charge it a few days ago and plugged in the power cable, but it's not charging. The battery icon in the Windows taskbar to the bottom right says it's plugged in and charging, but the charge level never goes above 2%. I have checked and I don't have a hcarging switch on the laptop anywhere, so it should be charging. If I unplug the cable, the laptop runs out of power within 30 seconds or so, further fueling my thought that it's a faulty battery. Anyone have any bright ideas? If this doesn't get fixed I'll just ring up Sony and get them to send me a replacement battery or something. Thanks.

• Limited RGB range due to HDMI cable?

  I have a NVidia GeForce GTX 660, connected to a Samsung SyncMaster S24B350 through a HDMI cable. On my computer, I'm running both, Windows 8 and Linux Mint. I think that something might prevent my system from using the whole RGB spectrum, since bright colors seem to vanish into white under standard settings. However, under Linux I could switch to a limited color range mode (16-235) and suddenly, the image looked much better. Is it possible that the HDMI cable limits color range (since it was originally inteded for TVs)? Is there a way of switching to limited color range mode in Windows 8 as well?

• LCD problems: brightness / contrast blown out, can't bring up menu

  Yesterday, when I turned on my LCD monitor, the colors were very very bright. It looks as if someone had gone into the monitor on-screen-display and turned up brightness & contrast all the way to the max. Colors were washed out, and it's almost painful to look at. So I tried to go into the menu and see if the settings were wrong somehow...and I found that I cannot bring up the menu. All the buttons on the front of the monitor now do nothing, except the power button. I was able to go into my graphics card settings, and turn the brightness way down to compensate, so it's at least usable for now, but it's not quite right, there is definitely some loss of color resolution or something from the two extreme settings canceling each other out. Any ideas what kind of failure in the LCD might cause this? According to the control panel, the model number is: KL2490DW-D It's a 24" 1920x1200 with the brand "synaps".

  I'm planning to refresh my laptop. I've been using a thinkpad T42 for a long time and run Ubuntu on it. I'm planning to move to using a desktop for all my heavy work and getting a very light netbook style machine for mobile use. I need a decent keyboard, good battery life and a display that's bright and responsive. I'm evaluating a couple of laptops including a mac but have never come across information about a Sony Vaio. Do any of the people have experience with the laptop? What are your opinions? Does it work fine with Linux? Is it tinkerable (a big problem with the macbooks). How's the build quality, how's the service?

• How to connect to IIS and SQL Server Express on Windows 7 host from XP Mode

  Hello, I am running IIS and SQL Server 2008 Express on my Windows 7 host, and I'd like to be able to connect to them in XP Mode. My host machine is not a part of a domain, only a workgroup. So far, I've tried these instructions on connecting to SQL Server, but I'm not able to telnet to port 1433 on the host from XP Mode. I'm also not able to connect using a SQL client. I'm not able to connect to IIS on the host from XP Mode. Advice from those who have had success doing this would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon.

• Word 2003: Bullet style renamed; is there some way to reverse this?

  I have a machine that seems to have had its bullet style permanently changed - I previously was creating a document which had a question/answer format, where the answers were bullet points, so I created a style for them. The problem is, it seems to have stuck. If you click the "Bullet" button, the paragraph is formatted in the style. I've tried deleting the style in Normal.dot, and even deleting the Normal.dot file in the entirely - neither seems to fix the problem. Anyone have any other bright ideas on how to fix it?

• Why does VirtualBox want my attention every morning?

  I'm running Vista 64-bit Ultimate on this PC. On it, I've installed VirtualBox, and in that I'm running Linux. Everything's working great. I leave it running all the time. When I come in in the morning, every time, the "Sun VirtualBox" item in the Windows taskbar is bright orange, like it's trying to get my attention. What would cause this? I'm curious both if somebody has an idea of something VirtualBox might do that warrants this attention-grab, or what to look for in the VB logs to find out what causes this. I'm sure it's harmless, but I'd like to stop it if I can.

  Hi I'm performance tuning a DB server its a Dell R710 there is a very significant I/O bottleneck. Unfortunately the server was purchased with the 6 x 3.5 inch sata configuration which doesn't give me the leeway I need to address the issue. Before going to DAS does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a replacement front drive enclosure ? I know the server is configurable with something like 12 or 16 2.5 inch drives and it appears to be modular ? I tired contacting dell but the offshore parts department reps are not very bright lol. • How do I troubleshoot CanoScan LIDE20 on Ubuntu 9.10 in VirtualBox?

  This may be a VirtualBox question more than anything else. The host OS is Win7, which sees the scanner, but has no drivers for it. VirtualBox sees & recognizes the scanner as "Cannon Scan" and shows "state captured" when I hover over USB devices. Searching gives me many happy reports of this particular scanner being well supported, and that SANE should work with it immediately (also listedin the Supported Hardware List. I get "no devices available" from XSane... and I'm not sure where else I can check. I'd like to see if VirtualBox is telling the truth and find out if the USB port is actually being fed into the virtual OS. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where/how to do that in Ubuntu? Or other bright ideas. I'm starting with a little project to add some zing to my beginner linux studies - I'm sure I haven't checked some obvious things, because I don't know them yet. ;)

• Server 2008 won't run executables from CMD prompt without .exe extension

  On one of our production server 2008 boxes, I cannot run executables from a CMD prompt without supplying the full filename, including the '.exe' extension. For example, when running "java" produced the usual "is not recognized as an internal or external command" message, I assumed I had borked the path and/or java_home variables. However, even navigating to the %java_home%\bin directory and typing "java" produced the same error. If I type "java.exe" instead, all works perfectly. The problem does not only affect java.exe. Even Microsoft executables suffer the same problem -- ping fails, ping.exe works; ipconfig fails, ipconfig.exe works; manually created batch file 'test' only works when invoked explicitly as 'test.bat'. Any bright ideas?

• Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?

  Periodically, while using my Windows 7 Pro desktop installation, the screen suddenly dims. The brightness is about 75% normal (estimate). It's as if I am in a power-saving mode on a laptop running on batteries. But this is a full desktop installation. I know it is not a hardware glitch or monitor adjustment issue because the Windows cursor is still bright white while everything else goes dim. The Control Panel Power Options have not been changed. They are set to "Balanced [active]" and I have tried restoring the default settings. Flipping through the power and display settings, everything looks "normal." There is no screen saver or power-off-after settings apparent. Rebooting the system resets everything to full brightness but I can't find a way to restore it in Windows or to keep it from happening in the first place. Suggestions?

• How to disable the green power light on the Sony Vaio

  The Sony Vaio's green power light is extremely bright and very distracting! I can't even look at the screen without this power light being in my view!! Is there any way to disable it or reduce its intensity? Googling for "sony vaio disable green power light" (and similar combinations) didn't provide anything useful. I tried booting into the BIOS, but it didn't have an option for this. Also, the Viao Command Center didn't have any on it. I guess sticking a tape over the LED is the only option? • Windows 8.1 backlight turns off

  This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. I have an HP Elitebook 8460p and recently updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now when I have certain windows open and focused (it's always different, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes it's the control-panel and so on, there is no clear pattern) the backlight of the screen is completely turned off - when I take a torch and point it to the screen or hold it to a bright-light source I can see there is still a picture there you can even work (or better said you cuold if you'd see anything). When I tab to certain other windows the screen goes back to normal back light - I can then tab back to the other window and the backlight will be turned off again. I have no idea what's going on and also no idea what information you need. The display-adapter I got is the AMD Radeon HD 6400M - I tried updating to the newest driver but that didn't help. • Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. And the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

  When I do a search in vim, I like to have my results highlighted and super-visible, so I give them a bright yellow background and a black foreground in my .vimrc. " When highlighting search terms, make sure text is contrasting colors :highlight Search guibg=yellow guifg=black (This is for GUI versions of vim, like MacVim or Gvim; for command-line, you'd use ctermbg and ctermfg.) But I sometimes use search as a movement, as in c/\foo - "change from the cursor to the next occurrence of foo." In that case, I don't want all the occurrences of foo to be highlighted. Can I turn off highlighting in cases where search is used as a movement?
