  • RHEL 5.2 installing on ProLiant BL460c - hangs at 'now booting the kernel'

    - by Dr Rocket Mr Socket
As the title states, I have a problem. This server and the installation disc are also on the other side of the world to me so... So far, I have tried to start the install with the parameters: linux text noapic noacpi no=apic no=acpi which results in the same hang. I have also disabled a PCI ethernet adapter, I am uneasy about disabling the onboard ethernet adapter I do not know if ILO uses this. Anyone have any advice? Much appreciated. EDIT: full output after trying to begin the installation. boot: linux text Loading initrd.img.................. Loading vmlinuz....... Uncompressing Linux...done. Now booting the kernel stays on this for hours EDIT2: adding the 'mem=40960M' (server has 40 gigs of ram) parameter allows it to proceed but the following output directly after 'Now booting the kernal' Memory: sized by int13 0e801h initrd extends beyond end of memory (0x00ef2090 > 0x00000000) disabling initrd Console: 16 point font, 400 scans Console: colour VGA+ 80x25, 1 virtual console (max 63) pcibios_init : BIOS32 Service Directory Structure at 0x000ffee0 pcibios_init : BIOS32 Service Directory entry at 0xf0000

  • LightDM will not start after stopping it

    - by Sweeters
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and in trying to install the nvidia CUDA developer drivers I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F5) and stopped lightdm (installation required that no X server instance be running) through sudo service lightdm stop. Re-starting lightdm with sudo service lightdm start did not work: A couple of * Starting [...] lines where displayed, but the process hanged. (I do not remember at which point, but I think it was * Starting System V runlevel compatibility. I manually rebooted my laptop, and ever since booting seems to hang, usually around the * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK] log line (not consistently at that point, though). From that point on, I seem to be able to interact with my system only through a tty session (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I've tried purging and reinstalling both lightdm and gdm, as well as selecting both as the default display managers (through sudo dpkg-reconfigure [lightdm / gdm] or by manually editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager) through both apt-get and aptitude (that shouldn't make a difference anyway) after updating the packages, but the problem persists. Some of the responses I'm getting are the following: After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (but not ... gdm) I get the following message: dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_NAME missing dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing After trying sudo service lightdm start or sudo start lightdm I get to see the boot loading screen again but nothing changes. If I go back to the tty shell I see lightdm start/running, process <num> but ps -e | grep lightdm gives no output. After trying sudo service gdm start or sudo starg gdm I get the gdm start/running, process <num> message, and gdm-binary is supposedly an active process, but all that happens is that the screen blinks a couple of times and nothing else. Other candidate solutions that I'd found on the web included running startx but when I try that I get an error output [...] Fatal server error: no screens found [...]. Moreover, I made sure that lightdm-gtk-greeter is installed but that did not help either. Please excuse my not including complete outputs/logs; I am writing this post from another computer and it's hard to manually copy the complete logs. Also, I've seen several posts that had to do with similar problems, but either there was no fix, or the one suggested did not work for me. In closing: Please help! I very much hope to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch! :) Alex @mosi I did not manage to fix the NVIDIA kernel driver as per your instructions. I should perhaps mention that I'm on a Dell XPS15 laptop with an NVIDIA Optimus graphics card, and that I have bumblebee installed (which installs nvidia drivers during its installation, I believe). Issuing the mentioned commands I get the following: ~$uname -r 3.0.0-12-generic ~$lsmod | grep -i nvidia nvidia 11713772 0 ~$dmesg | grep -i nvidia [ 8.980041] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. • I have UFW block messages from local network machines, how can I analyse if they are malicious?

    - by Trygve
I'm getting a lot of messages in my UFW log, and I'm trying to figure out if these are malicious or just normal. A UDP broadcast is coming from a windows laptop x.x.x.191, and some from our synology disks x.x.x.{6,8,10,11}. I have not figured out which macine 114 is yet. I would appreciate some advice in how to read the log, and get the most I can out of these calls. • PC to USB transfer slow

    - by Vipin Ms
I'm having trouble with USB transfer, not with external hard disk. Transfer starts with like, for the transfer of 700MB file it starts with 30mb/s and towards the end it stops at 0s and stays put for like 3-4 mins to transfer the last bit. I have tried different USB devices, but no luck. Is it a bug? Another important point is, in Kubuntu there is no such issue. So is it something related to Gnome? I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. Somebody please help, it's really annoying. Here are the details. PC all of my drives are in ext4. USB I tried ext3,ntfs and fat32. All having the same problem. • Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) after apt-get upgrade

    - by Edward
I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? If so, how can I update the kernel? apt-get install any linux-headers/image cannot change the uname -r value Thanks!

  • Can realtek 8192cu usb wireless card be used in ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0?

    - by waterloo2005
I do like the post RTL8188CUS Wireless USB Dongle doesn't work unless I disable wireless security . But when I plug my 8192cu usb wireless card, my computer screen is off. At that time I even can not use Alt SysRq k or Alt SysRq + reisub. I compile the latest driver of 8192cu on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-34. In RealTek site, I download 8192cu drive which is for Linux Kernel 2.6.18~2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8. But now in Ubuntu12.04 my kernel is 3.2.0-34. Every time I plug the usb 8192cu wireless card my system halts. Now I try to blacklist both the system's rtl8192cu driver and the new 8192cu driver I compile, but the system still halts when I plug the usb driver. What about you ? Thanks!

  • Flush kernel's TCP buffer with `MSG_MORE`-flagged packets

    - by timn
send()'s man page reveals the MSG_MORE flag which is asserted to act like TCP_CORK. I have a wrapper function around send(): int SocketConnection_Write(SocketConnection *this, void *buf, int len) { errno = 0; int sent = send(this->fd, buf, len, MSG_NOSIGNAL); if (errno == EPIPE || errno == ENOTCONN) { throw(exc, &SocketConnection_NotConnectedException); } else if (errno == ECONNRESET) { throw(exc, &SocketConnection_ConnectionResetException); } else if (sent != len) { throw(exc, &SocketConnection_LengthMismatchException); } return sent; } Assuming I want to use the kernel buffer, I could go with TCP_CORK, enable whenever it is necessary and then disable it to flush the buffer. But on the other hand, thereby the need for an additional system call arises. Thus, the usage of MSG_MORE seems more appropriate to me. I'd simply change the above send() line to: int sent = send(this->fd, buf, len, MSG_NOSIGNAL | MSG_MORE); According to lwm.net, packets will be flushed automatically if they are large enough: If an application sets that option on a socket, the kernel will not send out short packets. Instead, it will wait until enough data has shown up to fill a maximum-size packet, then send it. When TCP_CORK is turned off, any remaining data will go out on the wire. But this section only refers to TCP_CORK. Now, what is the proper way to flush MSG_MORE packets? I can only think of two possibilities: Call send() with an empty buffer and without MSG_MORE being set Re-apply the TCP_CORK option as described on this page Unfortunately the whole topic is very poorly documented and I couldn't find much on the Internet. I am also wondering how to check that everything works as expected? Obviously running the server through strace' is not an option. So the only simplest way would be to usenetcat' and then look at its `strace' output? Or will the kernel handle traffic differently transmitted over a loopback interface?

  • My kernel only works in block (0,0)

    - by ZeroDivide
I am trying to write a simple matrixMultiplication application that multiplies two square matrices using CUDA. I am having a problem where my kernel is only computing correctly in block (0,0) of the grid. This is my invocation code: dim3 dimBlock(4,4,1); dim3 dimGrid(4,4,1); //Launch the kernel; MatrixMulKernel<<<dimGrid, dimBlock>>>(Md,Nd,Pd,Width); This is my Kernel function __global__ void MatrixMulKernel(int* Md, int* Nd, int* Pd, int Width) { const int tx = threadIdx.x; const int ty = threadIdx.y; const int bx = blockIdx.x; const int by = blockIdx.y; const int row = (by * blockDim.y + ty); const int col = (bx * blockDim.x + tx); //Pvalue stores the Pd element that is computed by the thread int Pvalue = 0; for (int k = 0; k < Width; k++) { Pvalue += Md[row * Width + k] * Nd[k * Width + col]; } __syncthreads(); //Write the matrix to device memory each thread writes one element Pd[row * Width + col] = Pvalue; } I think the problem may have something to do with memory but I'm a bit lost. What should I do to make this code work across several blocks?

  • iotop for Linux kernel 2.6.18

    - by Lightsauce
So it has to come to my attention that iotop isn't availalbe for 2.6.18 since it's less than 2.6.20 and requires Python 2.6+. I've done some research and came across this article: http://lserinol.blogspot.com/2009/09/io-usage-per-process-on-linux.html According to this, if these process have io stats in /proc/pid#/io (where pid# is the process #) it's doable regardless of the kernel version. So, in reality, I could upgrade Python to 2.6 and test out iotop. However, my flavor of Linux, CentOS release 5.5 (Final), only supports Python 2.4.3-44.el5 currently. If I were to do uninstall from yum, it doesn't look so pretty. It ends up wanting to uninstall 235 packages, most of which are very important! I read in one place, online (I forget the URL from yesterday), that you can install Python 2.6+ parallel to this one, and have the rpm install for iotop use that. Well, I didn't choose that route. I figured, what the heck, lets write iotop (not copying it, but reverse engineering it without actually looking at it's code/it in use) in bash. I thought it would just grab the /proc/pid#/io file and parse stats. So I wrote a script to grab the top 10 rchar, wchar, read_bytes, and write_bytes by collecting all these stats from all the /proc/pid#/io files, sorting them by each metric, then grabbing the top 10 highest values. The conclusion, the data seems completely useless. Does anybody know any resources for advanced Linux where I can figure out how to take these /proc/pid#/ directories and figure out what the heck they are doing with io on the disk? My main goal is to figure out what exactly is causing high load on my disk. I just know it's on the / partition (/dev/sda2 in this case), and I'm not really sure how to narrow it down without the help of iotop. If I run iostat to grab metrics for 1 minute, every second, the first result it gives me shows a high 'kB_read/s', so that makes me think, it's reading mostly. However, if I watch the update it gives me every second, it's actually just showing values for kB_wrtn/s. This makes me think the initial value iostat gives me is misleading.

  • Kernel Mode Rootkit

    - by Pajarito
On the other 3 computers in my family, I believe that we have a kernel-mode rootkit for windows. It appears that the same rootkit is on all of them. We think. We changed all the important passwords from my computer, running linux right now. On all of the infected computers is Symantic Endpoint Protection, because it's free from the university where my mom and dad work. In my opinion symantec is a piece of crap, seeing as it didn't even manager to delete the tracking cookies it found when I tried it on my own computer. The Computers and their set-ups: Computer A: Vista Business; symantec antivirus. runs it as admin, no password. IE8. no other security software other than what comes with windows. IE8 security settings the default Computer B: XP Home Premium; symantec antivirus. runs as normal user, no password, admin account with weak password, spybot, uses IE8 with default settings, sometimes Firefox Computer C: XP Home Premium; symantec antivirus. runs as normal user, no password, admin account with weak password, uses IE8 with default settings, no other security programs except what came with windows This is what's happening. Cut and pasted from my dad's forum post. -- When I scanned my laptop (Dell XPS M1330 with Windows Vista Small Business), Symantec Endpoint Protection hangs for a while, perhaps 10 seconds or so, on some of the following files 9129837.exe, hide_evr2.sys, VirusRemoval.vbs, NewVirusRemoval.vbs, dll.dll, alsmt.ext, and _epnt.sys. It does this if a run a scan that I set up to run on a new thumbnail drive and it does this even if the thumbnail is not plugged in. It doesn't seem to do this if I scan only the C: drive. I've check for problems with symantec endpoint protection and also with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. They found nothing and I can't find anything by searching for hidden files. Next I tried microsoft's rootkitrevealer. It (rootkitrevealer) finds 279660 (or so) discrepancies and the interface is so glitchy after that I can't really figure out what is going on. The screen is squirrely. The rootkitrevealer pulls up many files in the folder \programdata\applicationdata and there are numberous appended \applicationdata on the end of that as well. -- As you can see, what we did was install MSE and MBAM and scan with both of them. Nothing but a tracking cookie. Then I took over and ran rootkitrevealer.exe from MicroSoft from a flash drive. It found a bunch of discrepancies, but only about 20 or so where security related, the rest being files that you just couldn't see from Windows Explorer. I couldn't see whether of not the files list above, the ones that the scan was hanging on, where in the list. The other thing is, I have no idea what to do about the things the scan comes up with. Then we checked the other computers and they do the same thing when you scan with Symantec. The people at the university seen to think that dad might not have a virus, but 2 of the computers slowed down noticably AND IE8 started acting all funny. None of my family is very computer oriented, and 2 of the possible causes for the rootkit are: -My dad bought a new flash drive, which shipped with a data security executable on it -My dad has to download lots of articles for his work Those are the only things that stand out, but it could have been anything. We are currently backing up our data, and I'll post again after trying IceSword 1.22. I just looked at my dad's forum topic, and someone recommended GMER. I'll try that too.

  • Kernel panic when bringing up DRBD resource

    - by sc.
I'm trying to set up two machines synchonizing with DRBD. The storage is setup as follows: PV - LVM - DRBD - CLVM - GFS2. DRBD is set up in dual primary mode. The first server is set up and running fine in primary mode. The drives on the first server have data on them. I've set up the second server and I'm trying to bring up the DRBD resources. I created all the base LVM's to match the first server. After initializing the resources with `` drbdadm create-md storage I'm bringing up the resources by issuing drbdadm up storage After issuing that command, I get a kernel panic and the server reboots in 30 seconds. • ESX3.5 Cluster & MD3000i -- Both servers see iSCSI Targets, Only one server can use partition.

    - by GruffTech
Alright. First and foremost, Warning. This is a bigger-then-normal question. I like to be thorough and try to eliminate all possible "easymode" answers, as well as give everyone a feel of what i've tried. I've included several images of our setup and the problem it is having.. TLDR Version: So I've followed the guides located here: ESX Deployment Guide V1 this is the guide Dell has sent me to setup two ESX3.5 servers mounting a Dell MD3000i. It doesn't work. Both servers can't use the same storage partition on the MD3000. Both servers see it, but only one server can actually use it. (that server being whatever server created the partition on the target.) Both ESX servers are members of the Host Group. Full Version I have 2 ESX3.5 Servers (10.0.7.102, also called EPI2, and 10.0.7.103, also called EPI3.) connected to a iSCSI SAN Device (Dell MD3000i). Both ESX servers can "scan" the SAN and see the LUNS. Part One: MD3000i Storage On the MD3000i, Both servers are in my host group. I have two partitions, VM1 and VM2, both 1.6TB (vmware doesn't like anything past 2tb.) And you can even see that the ESX servers are targetting the MD3000 just fine. Part Two: The ESX Servers Figure 1. So as you can see above, Both ESX Servers (10.0.7.102 and 10.0.7.103) are able to see and scan the MD3000i SAN. Figure 2. Above is the storage both servers see. I created the storage partition on EPI2 (102). I then Extended the partition to include the second LUN for a grand total of 3.27 TB of storage. Removing partition on 102, Formatted partition on 103 instead. Same result, except flipped. 103 can use storage, 102 can not. Starting Over. Removing all iSCSI Targets on both ESX Boxes, disabling iSCSI, turning off the firewall for iSCSI, rebooting ESX. Then on the MD3000, Removed the Host Group, Removed the Host-to-Virtual Mappings, Restarted the SAN. Followed the Documentation again, same result. Both servers see the storage, but only one server can use it. Disabling and Re-enabling VMware DRS and HA. Same result. Flat-out turning off VMware DRS and HA, and doing the "start over" step to see if maybe that borked it. Same Result. I'm kinda loosing my mind here, Everything i read online says "just partition it and if the ESX boxes can see the targets, it just works".... well crap. Any ideas, any other things to try? Can anyone atleast point me in the right direction? I'm really tired of working from 1am til 4am (our maintenance hours)

  • Linux Kernel not passing through multicast UDP packets

    - by buecking
Recently I've set up a new Ubuntu Server 10.04 and noticed my UDP server is no longer able to see any multicast data sent to the interface, even after joining the multicast group. I've got the exact same set up on two other Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS machines and there is no problem receiving data after joining the same multicast group. The ethernet card is a Broadcom netXtreme II BCM5709 and the driver used is: b $ ethtool -i eth1 driver: bnx2 version: 2.0.2 firmware-version: 5.0.11 NCSI 2.0.5 bus-info: 0000:01:00.1 I'm using smcroute to manage my multicast registrations. b$ smcroute -d b$ smcroute -j eth1 233.37.54.71 After joining the group ip maddr shows the newly added registration. b$ ip maddr 1: lo inet 224.0.0.1 inet6 ff02::1 2: eth0 link 33:33:ff:40:c6:ad link 01:00:5e:00:00:01 link 33:33:00:00:00:01 inet 224.0.0.1 inet6 ff02::1:ff40:c6ad inet6 ff02::1 3: eth1 link 01:00:5e:25:36:47 link 01:00:5e:25:36:3e link 01:00:5e:25:36:3d link 33:33:ff:40:c6:af link 01:00:5e:00:00:01 link 33:33:00:00:00:01 inet 233.37.54.71 <------- McastGroup. inet 224.0.0.1 inet6 ff02::1:ff40:c6af inet6 ff02::1 So far so good, I can see that I'm receiving data for this multicast group. b$ sudo tcpdump -i eth1 -s 65534 host 233.37.54.71 tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode listening on eth1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65534 bytes 09:30:09.924337 IP 192.164.1.120.58848 > 233.37.54.71.15572: UDP, length 212 09:30:09.947547 IP 192.164.1.120.58848 > 233.37.54.71.15572: UDP, length 212 09:30:10.108378 IP 192.164.1.120.58866 > 233.37.54.71.15574: UDP, length 268 09:30:10.196841 IP 192.164.1.120.58848 > 233.37.54.71.15572: UDP, length 212 ... I can also confirm that the interface is receiving mcast packets. b $ ethtool -S eth1 | grep mcast_pack rx_mcast_packets: 103998 tx_mcast_packets: 33 Now here's the problem. When I try to capture the traffic using a simple ruby UDP server I receive zero data! Here's a simple server that reads data send on port 15572 and prints the first two characters. This works on the two 8.04.4 Ubuntu Servers, but not the 10.04 server. require 'socket' s = UDPSocket.new s.bind("", 15572) 5.times do text, sender = s.recvfrom(2) puts text end If I send a UDP packet crafted in ruby to localhost, the server receives it and prints out the first two characters. So I know that the server above is working correctly. irb(main):001:0> require 'socket' => true irb(main):002:0> s = UDPSocket.new => #<UDPSocket:0x7f3ccd6615f0> irb(main):003:0> s.send("I2 XXX", 0, 'localhost', 15572) When I check the protocol statistics I see that InMcastPkts is not increasing. While on the other 8.04 servers, on the same network, received a few thousands packets in 10 seconds. b $ netstat -sgu ; sleep 10 ; netstat -sgu IcmpMsg: InType3: 11 OutType3: 11 Udp: 446 packets received 4 packets to unknown port received. 0 packet receive errors 461 packets sent UdpLite: IpExt: InMcastPkts: 4654 <--------- Same as below OutMcastPkts: 3426 InBcastPkts: 9854 InOctets: -1691733021 OutOctets: 51187936 InMcastOctets: 145207 OutMcastOctets: 109680 InBcastOctets: 1246341 IcmpMsg: InType3: 11 OutType3: 11 Udp: 446 packets received 4 packets to unknown port received. 0 packet receive errors 461 packets sent UdpLite: IpExt: InMcastPkts: 4656 <-------------- Same as above OutMcastPkts: 3427 InBcastPkts: 9854 InOctets: -1690886265 OutOctets: 51188788 InMcastOctets: 145267 OutMcastOctets: 109712 InBcastOctets: 1246341 If I try forcing the interface into promisc mode nothing changes. At this point I'm stuck. I've confirmed the kernel config has multicast enabled. Perhaps there are other config options I should be checking? b $ grep CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST /boot/config-2.6.32-23-server CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST=y Any thoughts on where to go from here?

  • Why am I unable to mount my USB drive (unknown partition table)?

    - by Pat
I'm a real newbie to linux. Anyway the problem is that my USB doesn't get recognized anymore which is really annoying because I need information from it. • if I define `my_domain`, postfix does not expand mail aliases

I have postfix v2.6.6 running on CentOS 6.3, hostname priest.ocsl.local (private, internal domain) with a number of aliases supportpeople: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] requests: "|/opt/rt4/bin/rt-mailgate --queue 'general' --action correspond --url http://localhost/", supportpeople help: "|/opt/rt4/bin/rt-mailgate --queue 'help' --action correspond --url http://localhost/", supportpeople If I leave postfix with its default configuration, then the aliases are resolved correctly/as I expect, so that incoming mail to, say, [email protected] will be piped through the rt-mailgate mailgate command and also be delivered (via the mail server for ocsl.co.uk (a publicly resolvable domain)) to [email protected], user2, etc. The problem comes when I define mydomain = ocsl.co.uk in /etc/postfix/main.cf (with the intention that outgoing mail come from, for example, [email protected]). When I do this, postfix continues to run the piped command correctly, however it no longer expands the nested aliases as I expect: instead of trying to deliver to [email protected], user2 etc, it tries to send to [email protected], which does not exist on the upstream mail server and generates NDRs. postconf -n for the non-working configuration follows (the working configuration differs only by the "mydomain" line. alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases command_directory = /usr/sbin config_directory = /etc/postfix daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix data_directory = /var/lib/postfix debug_peer_level = 2 html_directory = no inet_interfaces = all inet_protocols = all mail_owner = postfix mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq.postfix manpage_directory = /usr/share/man mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost mydomain = ocsl.co.uk newaliases_path = /usr/bin/newaliases.postfix queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.6.6/README_FILES sample_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.6.6/samples sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix setgid_group = postdrop unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550 We did have things working as we expected/wanted previously on an older system running Sendmail.

  • Frequent disconnects with oneiric server using wlan AR9285

I'm getting a large number of disconnects from my wireless when I switched to oneiric server (I did not see these happen with oneiric desktop) from my AR9285 wireless LAN device. • IRQ problem with 2.6.32/2.6.39 kernel on Debian Squeeze x86_64

    - by MasterM
    I recently assembled a new computer so that all hardware is pretty new. Since then I've been experiencing some problem with IRQs when running Debian 6.0. On random occasions, usually after an hour or so of running I hear a beep and this shows up in dmesg: [ 3537.762795] irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option) [ 3537.762797] Pid: 0, comm: swapper Tainted: P W O 2.6.39-2-amd64 #1 [ 3537.762798] Call Trace: [ 3537.762799] <IRQ> [<ffffffff810924d4>] ? __report_bad_irq+0x3a/0xa2 [ 3537.762803] [<ffffffff810926a4>] ? note_interrupt+0x168/0x1da [ 3537.762805] [<ffffffff81090dd4>] ? handle_irq_event_percpu+0x171/0x18f [ 3537.762807] [<ffffffff8100e0e2>] ? read_tsc+0x5/0x16 [ 3537.762809] [<ffffffff8106b8a2>] ? update_ts_time_stats+0x32/0x6b [ 3537.762810] [<ffffffff81090e26>] ? handle_irq_event+0x34/0x52 [ 3537.762812] [<ffffffff81063fb7>] ? sched_clock_idle_wakeup_event+0x12/0x1c [ 3537.762813] [<ffffffff81092df2>] ? handle_fasteoi_irq+0x82/0xa4 [ 3537.762815] [<ffffffff8100aadb>] ? handle_irq+0x1a/0x23 [ 3537.762816] [<ffffffff8100a384>] ? do_IRQ+0x45/0xaa [ 3537.762818] [<ffffffff81332c93>] ? common_interrupt+0x13/0x13 [ 3537.762818] <EOI> [<ffffffff81332c8e>] ? common_interrupt+0xe/0x13 [ 3537.762821] [<ffffffff81026800>] ? native_safe_halt+0x2/0x3 [ 3537.762829] [<ffffffffa016ed58>] ? acpi_idle_do_entry+0x39/0x62 [processor] [ 3537.762831] [<ffffffffa016edde>] ? acpi_idle_enter_c1+0x5d/0xad [processor] [ 3537.762834] [<ffffffff81261033>] ? cpuidle_idle_call+0x11f/0x1cc [ 3537.762835] [<ffffffff81008dd2>] ? cpu_idle+0xab/0xe1 [ 3537.762837] [<ffffffff8169fc60>] ? start_kernel+0x3e0/0x3eb [ 3537.762838] [<ffffffff8169f3c8>] ? x86_64_start_kernel+0x102/0x10f [ 3537.762839] handlers: [ 3537.762840] [<ffffffffa0358d5a>] (rtl8169_interrupt+0x0/0x2d7 [r8169]) [ 3537.762842] [<ffffffffa08ff2ca>] (nv_kern_isr+0x0/0x54 [nvidia]) [ 3537.762902] Disabling IRQ #16 After that Xorg either hogs on CPU or is unstable (up to hanging the system completely). Booting with irqpoll option only seems to prolong the initial time period after which the problem occurs. I'm using latest NVIDIA drivers and Realtek firmware from firmware-realtek package. I have two GTX 560Ti that run in SLI. Disabling SLI or taking out one card completely doesn't solve the problem either. • Linux arp cache timeout values

    - by Jak
I'm trying to configure sane values for the Linux kernel arp cache timeout, but I can't find a detailed explanation as to how they work anywhere. Even the kernel.org documentation doesn't give a good explanation, I can only find recommended values to alleviate overflow. Here is an example of the values I have: net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh1 = 128 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh2 = 512 net.ipv4.neigh.default.gc_thresh3 = 1024 Now, from what I've gathered so far: gc_thresh1 is the number of arp entries allowed before the garbage collector starts removing any entries at all. gc_thresh2 is the soft-limit, which is the number of entries allowed before the garbage collector actively removes arp entries. gc_thresh3 is the hard limit, where entries above this number are aggressively removed. Now, if I understand correctly, if the number of arp entries goes beyond gc_thresh1 but remains below gc_thresh2, the excess will be removed periodically with an interval set by gc_interval. My question is, if the number of entries goes beyond gc_thresh2 but below gc_thresh3, or if the number goes beyond gc_thresh3, how are the entries removed? In other words, what does "actively" and "aggressively" removed mean exactly? I assume it means they are removed more frequently than what is defined in gc_interval, but I can't find by how much.

  • Stronger laptop_mode in Linux

    - by Vi
Can I have stronger laptop mode in Linux? I want to spin down the hard drive and prevent it to spin up even if something wants to read something not in cache. In general I want to have these modes: Normal Current laptop mode Stronger laptop mode: spin up only when needs to read something uncached (and cache it). No spinups to write something unless really memory pressure (Exception: explicit "sync" command in console). Kernel is allowed to keep processes in D-sleep for 10 seconds for that. Forced laptop mode: do not spin up, period. Keep offending processes in D-sleep unless I turn off this mode. Like there is a bomb instead of hard drive. I also want to have access times tracked (mount -o atime), but I don't want the hard drive to be spinned up only to update them. Is there some settings or kernel patches that can get closer to this? May be I should write special io scheduler for "forced laptop mode"? E.g. echo suspend > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler to lock the drive and echo cfq > /ys/block/sda/queue/scheduler to unlock it again?

  • Java OutOfMemoryError due to Linux RAM disk cache not freed

    - by Markus Jevring
The process will run fine all day, then, bam, without warning, it will throw this error. Sometimes seemingly in the middle of doing nothing. It will happen at seemingly random times during the day. I checked to see if anything else was running on the machine, like scheduled backups or something, but found nothing. The machine has enough physical memory (2GB, with about 1GB free for a 3-500MB load), and has sufficient -Xmx specified. According to our sysadmin, the problem is that the RAM that the kernel uses as a disk cache (apparently all but 8MB) is not freed when the JVM needs to allocate memory, so the JVM process throws an OutOfMemoryError. This could be because Java asks the kernel if enough memory is available before allocating and finds that it is insufficient, resulting in a crash. I would like to think, however, that Java simply tries to allocate the memory via the kernel, and when the kernel gets such a request, it makes room for the application by throwing our some of the disk cache. Has anyone else run in to the issue, and if so, what was the error, and how did you solve it? We are currently using jdk1.6.0_20 on SLES 10 SP2 Linux 2.6.16.60-0.42.9-smp in VMWare ESX.

  • is it possible to turn off vdso on glibc side?

    - by heroxbd
I am aware that passing vdso=0 to kernel can turn this feature off, and that the dynamic linker in glibc can automatic detect and use vdso feature from kernel. Here I met with this problem. There is a RHEL 5.6 box (kernel 2.6.18-238.el5) in my institution where I only have a normal user access, probably suffering from RHEL bug 673616. As I compile a toolchain of linux-headers-3.9/gcc-4.7.2/glibc-2.17/binutils-2.23 on top of it, gcc bootstrap fails in cc1 in stage2 cannnot be run Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x00002aaaaaaca6eb in ?? Both cc1 and the test program can be run on another running RHEL 5.5 (kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5) with gcc-4.7.2/glibc-2.17/binutils-2.23 as normal user. I cannot simply upgrade the box to a newer RHEL version, nor could I turn VDSO off via sysctl or proc. The question is, is there a way to compile glibc so that it turns off VDSO unconditionally?
