• How can i compare Audio, what programming language should i use

  I have 2 audio files that are from almost the same source. But at some points there shifted a bit. Also the codecs does not match. I would like to make a program that takes a sample 2 - 4 seconds. And looks for it in the other file. (Most of the time it's not shifted more than 30 seconds). Than take the time and store it, Go ahead for a few seconds take a sample and find it again. This way i want to create a file where i can see on what points the file is shifted. For people who are more interested in what i want. I have a audio/video file speech and subtitles. But i have same speech from different sources with differs a bit in time. And i like to make a program that can correct the subtitle time for me. Enough about the problem I looked on the Internet for ways to compare audio files. Based on what i read comparing 2 audio files isn't that easy as i had hoped. Some talk about algorithms http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=169641 Some audio-library's portaudio.com aubio.org sourceforge.net/projects/ccaudio/ ambiera.com/irrklang/ The biggest problem i have is that i can't find something i can generate from the audio that i can use to compare with.   I am reading "Probability and Computing" by M.Mitzenmacher, E.Upfal and I have problems understanding how the probability of comparison of two elements is calculated. Input: the list (y1,y2,...,YN) of numbers. We are looking for pivot element. Question: what is probability that two elements yi and yj (ji) will be compared? Answer (from book): yi and yj will be compared if either yi or yj will be selected as pivot in first draw from sequence (yi,yi+1,...,yj-1,yj). So the probablity is: 2/(y-i+1). The problem for me is initial claim: for example, picking up yi in the first draw from the whole list will cause the comparison with yj (and vice-versa) and the probability is 2/n. So, rather the "reverse" claim is true -- none of the (yi+1,...,yj-1) elements can be selected beforeyi or yj, but the "pool" size is not fixed (in first draw it is n for sure, but on the second it is smaller). Could someone please explain this, how the authors come up with such simplified conclusion? Thank you in advance

• Trailing comments after variable assignment subvert comparison

  In GNU make, trailing comments appended to variable assignments prevent subsequent comparison (via ifeq) from working correctly. Here's the Makefile... A = a B = b ## trailing comment C = c RESULT := ifeq "$(A)" "a" RESULT += a endif ifeq "$(B)" "b" RESULT += b endif ifeq "$(C)" "c" RESULT += c endif rule: @echo RESULT=\"$(RESULT)\" @echo A=\"$(A)\" @echo B=\"$(B)\" @echo C=\"$(C)\" Here's the output... $ make RESULT=" a c" A="a" B="b " C="c" As you can see from the displayed value of RESULT, the ifeq was affected by the presence of the comment in the assignment of B. Echoing the variable B, shows that the problem is not the comment, but the intervening space. The obvious solution is to explicitly strip the whitespace prior to comparison like so... ifeq "$(strip $(B))" "b" RESULT += b endif However this seems error prone. Since the strip operation is not needed unless/until a comment is used, you can leave out the strip and everything will initially work just fine -- so chances are you won't always remember to add the strip. Later, if someone adds a comment when setting the variable, the Makefile no longer works as expected. Note: There is a closely related issue, as demonstrated in this question, that trailing whitespace can break string compares even if there is no comment. Question: Is there a more fool-proof way to deal with this issue?

• How to get list of declared functions with their data from php file?

  I need to get list of functions with their contents (not only the function name) from php file. I tried to use regex but it has lots of limitations. it doesn't parse all types of functions. for example it fails if the function has if and for loop statements. in details: I have around 100 include files. each file has number of declared functions. some files has functions duplicated in other files. so what I want is to get list of all functions from specific file then put this list inside an array then I will be using array unique in order to remove the duplicates. • How can I store an inventory-like list of numbers?

  I've got a list of number that I need to keep track of. The numbers are loosely related, but represent distinctly different items. I'd like to keep a list of the numbers but be able to refer to them by name so that I can call them and use them where needed easily. Kind of like an inventory listing, where the numbers all refer to a part ID and I'd like to call them idPart1, idPart2, idPart3 so their purpose is easily identifiable when they are used. What would be the best way to do this? 1)Define a structure. Say, PartIds. A number of int members will be included, part1, part2 etc. To use, an instance of the structure will be created, values assigned to the members, and the numbers will be used by saying struct.member as needed. 2)Define an enumeration. Use part1, part2 as the enum literals. Store the actual values in a vector or list, each one at the index corresponding to the value of the number's name within the enum. Use the enum literals to retrieve the values, list[enumLit]. 3)Something completely different There's nothing else I need to do with the numbers - just look them up every once in a while. Since there's no processing, I kind of think a new class for them is overkill, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise. Any suggestions?

• Comparison operators not supported for type IList when Paging data in Linq to Sql

  I can understand what the error is saying - it can't compare a list. Not a problem, other than the fact that I don't know how to not have it compare a list when I want to page through a model with a list as a property. My Model: Event : IEvent int Id string Title // Other stuff.. LazyList<EventDate> Dates // The "problem" property Method which pages the data (truncated): public JsonResult JsonEventList(int skip, int take) { var query = _eventService.GetEvents(); // Do some filtering, then page data.. query = query.Skip(skip).Take(take); return Json(query.ToArray()); } As I said, the above is truncated quite a bit, leaving only the main point of the function: filter, page and return JSON'd data. The exception occurs when I enumerate (.ToArray()). The Event object is really only used to list the common objects of all the event types (Meetings, Birthdays, etc - for example). It still implements IEvent like the other types, so I can't just remove the LazyList<EventDate> Dates' property unless I no longer implementIEvent` Anyway, is there a way to avoid this? I don't really want to compare a LazyList when I page, but I do not know how to resolve this issue. Thank you in advance! :)

I would like to create instances of a class containing a list that's empty by default; instead of later setting this list to the final full list I would like to successively add items to it. What I got instead was this: Anne 1 [1] Leo 1 [1, 2] Suzy 1 [1, 2, 3] If I replace self.lista = lst by self.lista = [] it works fine, just like when I add the line name_dict[name].lista = [] to the for loop. Why is it that the contents of the previous objects' lists are retained, yet their values of integer aren't?   A company I work with recently replaced their old server and gave it to me. Their old server is a Dell PowerEdge 2600. I've been playing with the machine and even installed Windows Server 2008 on it...and it seems to run it pretty well. Here are the specs for the two machines: Dev Machine: AMD Athlon64 3000+ 2.38 GHz (overclocked from 1.8GHz [@ 280x8.5] - it is stable-ish) Memory (RAM): 1x1GB OCZ PC3200 (Dual-Channel) 300GB HD OS: Windows XP Pro (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 40 seconds Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server: Intel Xeon CPU 2.8GHz 2.8GHz Memory (RAM): 512MBx2 (PC2700, not dual channel) 68GB HD (RAID 5) OS: Windows Server 2000 (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 56 seconds [using 1 processor] (Themes and Aero-Flass UI turned off, of course) I use my computer to regularly run Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, 5 browsers (Chrome, FF, IE, Safari, Opera), iTunes, Visual Studio 2010, and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 [sometimes simultaneously :-) ]. The SuperPi test has my dev machine coming in about 30% faster than the Server machine...though this could be due to the server running "Vista" with background processes prioritized. Do you think it would be realistic/advantageous for me to move from my dev machine to the Dell PowerEdge 2600? Is it possible to install additional DVD drives/burners on the server? Can I install my internal 300 GB hard drive on the server? Can I add some USB 2.0 ports? Note: I'll probably install Win XP Pro on the dev machine if I do switch. If not, are there any creative and useful way for me to take advantage of this server (with the goal of faster computing)?
