  • Windows 7 - Move location of Eventlog

    I am having a particular nasty problem of my main system drive 'disappearing' all of the sudden while the system is running. The vendor somewhat knows about this but has not managed to fix it completely over multiple fw iterations. Problems I have with the support is that I cannot provide any particular system log files/entries to further analyse what might have been going on because, well - windows cannot write to its 'lost' drive before bsod'ing. Is there any way to configure where Windows 7 stores its event logs so that I could specify a second physical hdd?

  • Unix copy command that has a progress bar, but not as heavy as rsync

    I need to copy lots of files. Usually I use rsync because I pass it the -aP options and I can see (a) how many files are left to process and (b) how much of each individual file is copied. However rsync also does lots of things with checksums to verify that a file was copied. However I don't really need that now. But normal cp doesn't include the above mentioned count of files left, which is very helpful. Is there anything like cp that includes progress of how many files left, but isn't as heavy as rsync?

    Where does Opera store cookies that are destroyed or expire after the browser is restarted? I'm looking for information on where these temporary cookies, with time expire (0), and that are deleted after a browser restart. I tested a file "cookies4.dat" using a hex editor and it doesn't have the temporary cookies stored inside. Does Opera create a temporary file for these cookies and delete them after restart? If that was so, where are they? Or does it store them in RAM?

  • Change the location of the System Temp directory on Windows 2003 Server

    In order to update an application on a Windows 2003 Server box, the application calls for 2.0 GB of free space in the System's Temp directory. The OS is on C:\ , and there is only 1 GB of free space there.... The server has a RAID configuration for its data on the system's E:\ . There is over 100GB of free space on E:\ . When I did a set tmp I found that the system's TEMP directory is not surprisingly located on C:\ .... TMP = C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.DES\LOCALS~1\Temp I assume it is possible to change the System Temp directory to the be located on E:\ ? How is this done, where's a good place to stick it, and is it safe to do this ?

  • Chrome not selecting correct language for Help tab

    When I click Help in Chrome, a new tab appears with the Google help links etc as expected, but I have a message saying: "This Help Centre is not currently available in your language...", etc. The drop down box at the bottom is not selected correctly for en-GB (my location). Instead it is set at the first language on the list. This happens if I am signed in to my Google account or not. Selecting English from the drop-down works ok, so no great drama. Just wondering if anybody else sees this behaviour? EDIT: Using current stable build 8.0.552.224

  • Change location of RSS Dynamic Desktops

    I'm currently using CCleaner to take care of my computer, but I also have a dynamic desktop background provided by Bing (I'm running Windows 7 HP) - and unfortunately the two conflict. Whenever I 'clean' my computer using CCleaner it messes up my destop backgrounds as they are stored in the temporary internet files directory, and for some reason I don't appear to be able to get as far as the 'Enclosures' sub directory in order to tell CCleaner to exclude the directory (I can see it in Windows Explorer but not in CCleaner's directory browser). Therefore, I am looking for an alternative solution to this problem and wondered if I could change the directory to which the images were downloaded on the RSS feed. If anybody knows how to do this, I would be grateful if you could share or indeed, I would be equally as greatful if anyone knows any other ways of getting around CCleaner. Please note that I don't want to stop cleaning the whole of my temporary internet files though - I just don't want the wallpapers that have been downloaded to be deleted... Thanks in advance!

I need to be able to find out which pages are executing which queries so that I can analyze the data. I am hoping there is some way to accomplish this without having to manually open each asp page and copy/paste the queries into a spreadsheet.   • Reasonable Location to Install Web Service on Server

    Firstly, I'm a software developer and not qualified as any kind of system or server expert so I'm looking for advice in order to help me prevent faults on our server. I've written a modular system to carry out certain tasks for us autonomously to prevent us from writing the same old code over and over again. This consists of a Windows Service (.NET), a Web Service (WCF), a shared Class Library, and a Database which will run on a Windows Server 2003. The problem comes, for me, in deployment. Specifically the web service - naturally the local service (and required shared library) are persisted (by default and convention) in the Program Files folder, but storing the web service here just seems absurd to me (even though we'd lock it down to appropriate use only). Should the files be stored some place else all together? Or split them up and store the web service elsewhere?

    Suppose I am visiting a page in Firefox and decide to go somewhere else and type the new URL manually into the address field, but the page fails to load, either because it times out, or because I hit Escape. Then Firefox removes my laboriously entered URL and replaces it with the URL of the current page. This is outrageous! I am pretty sure Firefox has changed this behavior lately, because this was one of the reasons I chose Firefox over IE back in the day. How can I turn off this annoying behavior?   • Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

    I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

  • Excel graph: turn stacked bar chart into part bullet chart

    I've a simple data file that has one column of actuals and another of target against categories. I would like to turn the TARGET figure into a 'Bullet marker'. I've seen it done on other graphs but I'm struggling with the category column being overwritten with the xy axis values. Or if I get close to doing it then the xy markers are not central. I've checked out Peltier but his examples are based on even more comlicated data than mine, so the steps required didn't seem to match up. Help greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike.     We use S3 for storing millions of entries in our webapp, now we move the whole thing to EC2, EU servers, and we also want to move that S3 data to EU. But the bucket we use is in US, and there seem to be no tool to move whole bucket content to different bucket. There is also problem on how to synchronize the data later on when we switch to EU bucket, the data that will be created meanwhile while the migration was running.

    I recently installed Munin on a development web server to keep track of system usage. I've noticted that the system's inode usage is climbing by about 7-8% per day even though the disk usage has barely increased at all. I'm guessing something is writing a ton of tiny files but I can't find what / where. I know how to find disk space usage but I can't seem to find a way to summarize inode usage. Is there a good way to determine inode usage by directory so I can locate the source of the usage?

    I am planning on using an unattend.xml to create a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit setup with Users and ProgramData on a 2nd drive. I have found many samples of how to do this (see below). However I would also like to move Program Files to a 3rd drive as well. i.e.: C:\Windows [SSD] D:\Users [HDD1] D:\ProgramData [HDD1] P:\Program Files [HDD2] P:\Program Files (x86) [HDD2] I have found that this was possible using unattend.txt in XP but all documentation or examples I find about Win 7 only mention Users and ProgramData, not Program Files. Is this possible using an answer file?
