  I'm stuck with a crappy digital signage platform that only renders .html and .swf files (and rss feeds) No customization of rss, only way to show something dynamic in a pretty way is to use flash. The question: is there any way to embed javascript in swf files or somehow have facebook and twitter flash plugins? I looked for ready-made swf widgets for the job but didn't find any, if there is any flash widget that serves a facebook and/or twitter feed please give me a link. (sorry if the question is out of context but these things usually run a stripped-down browser to display everything so its pretty much a web page run from a file and not a web server)

• Games at Work Part 2: Gamification and Enterprise Applications

  Gamification and Enterprise Applications In part 1 of this article, we explored why people are motivated to play games so much. Now, let's think about what that means for Oracle applications user experience. (Even the coffee is gamified. Acknowledgement @noelruane. Check out the Guardian article Dublin's Frothing with Tech Fever. Game development is big business in Ireland too.) Applying game dynamics (gamification) effectively in the enterprise applications space to reflect business objectives is now a hot user experience topic. Consider, for example, how such dynamics could solve applications users’ problems such as: Becoming familiar or expert with an application or process Building loyalty, customer satisfaction, and branding relationships Collaborating effectively and populating content in the community Completing tasks or solving problems on time Encouraging teamwork to achieve goals Improving data accuracy and completeness of entry Locating and managing the correct resources or information Managing changes and exceptions Setting and reaching targets, quotas, or objectives Games’ Incentives, Motivation, and Behavior I asked Julian Orr, Senior Usability Engineer, in the Oracle Fusion Applications CRM User Experience (UX) team for his thoughts on what potential gamification might offer Oracle Fusion Applications. Julian pointed to the powerful incentives offered by games as the starting place: “The biggest potential for gamification in enterprise apps is as an intrinsic motivator. Mechanisms include fun, social interaction, teamwork, primal wiring, adrenaline, financial, closed-loop feedback, locus of control, flow state, and so on. But we need to know what works best for a given work situation.” For example, in CRM service applications, we might look at the motivations of typical service applications users (see figure 1) and then determine how we can 'gamify' these motivations with techniques to optimize the desired work behavior for the role (see figure 2). • Windows 8 fresh install and 12.10 dual boot

  I have a question concerning Windows 8 and dual booting with Ubuntu 12.10. I've researched answers here, but haven't seen a question that resembles mine exactly: Ubuntu install and dual Boot with Windows 8 UEFI UEFI hardware and dual booting with windows Ubuntu 12.10 wont boot Specifically, I'm pondering installing a fresh install of Windows 8 (for game purposes), and a fresh install of 12.10 and dual booting them. I'm not sure if UEFI is hardware specific or software specific, and I'm worried if I try to implement the dual boot I'm going to run into UEFI issues and have to go through the grief of getting things up and running by following a long and tedious procedure. Can I, starting with Windows 8, then install 12.10 without too much hassle? My current hardware config is: Microstar Motherboard 7514 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The drive I'm thinking of using is a Western Digital TB drive, new out of the box. As always, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It weighed 29 pounds more than any persons lap could hold.  Then the term “portable computer” meant you could remove it from the building and take it else where.  Today I am typing on this entry on a Macbook Air which weighs 2.38 pounds. This morning Amazons front page main title is: “Much More for Much Less” I was born at the right time to start with the CPM operating system on the Kaypro thru the DOS, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and mobile phone operating systems and languages.  If you are not aware Technology is moving at a rapid pace.  The New iPad (those who are keeping score – iPad4) is replacing a 7 month old machine the New iPad (iPad 3) I have used and owned many technology devices in my life.  The main point that most of the reader who are in the USA overlook is the fact that we are in the USA.  The devices we purchase have a great digital garden to support them.  The Kaypro computer had a 7-inch screen.  It was a TV tube with two colors – Black and Green.  You could see the 80-column screen flicker with characters – have you every played Pac-Man emulated on the screen with the ABC characters. Traveling across the world you will find that not all apps on your device will function as they did back home because they are not offered outside of your country of origin. I think the main question a buyer of technology should be asking is Function.  The greatest Specs with out function limit you.  The most beautiful form with out function is the same as a crystal vase on your shelf – not a good cereal bowl in the morning. Microsoft Surface RT, Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPad all great devices in their respective customers hands. My advice for those looking to purchase on this year:  If the device is your only technology device you buy what you WANT and LIKE. Consider this parallel universe if its not your only device?  Ever go shopping for clothing, shoes, and accessories with your wife, girlfriend, sister or mother?  If you listen carefully you will hear the little voices coming out of there heads saying:  “This goes well with that and I can use it also with that outfit” ”Do you think this clashes with that?”  “Ohh I love how that combination looks on you”.  Portable devices such as tablets and computers can offer a whole lot more when they are combined with the digital echo system you have at home and the manufacturer offers online. Pros of each Device: Microsoft Surface RT: There is a new functionality named SmartGlass which will let you share the content off your tablet to your XBOX 360.  Microsoft office is loaded on the tablet.  You can have more than one user profile on the tablet if you share it with others.   Amazon Kindle or Kindle HD: If you are an Amazon consumer with an annual Amazon Prime service you can consume videos and read books off the Amazon site.  Its the cheapest device.  Its a step up from the kindle reader in many ways.   Apple Ipad or Ipad mini: Over 270 Thousand applications.  Airplay permits you the ability to share to your TV screen. If you are a cord cutter (a person who gets their entertainment content over the web or air vs Cable Providers) the Airplay or Smart glass are a huge bonus.  iPad mini or not: The mini will fit in a purse where the larger one will not.  Its lighter which makes it nice to hold for prolonged periods.  It has an option for LTE wireless which non of the other sub 9 inch tables offer.  The screen is non retina which means the applications are smaller.  Speaking with individuals who are above 50 in age that wear glasses they retina does not make a difference for them however they prefer the larger iPad over the new mini.   Happy Shopping this Channuka Season.   The Kosher Coder.   Follow me on twitter @KosherCoder

• Not able to suspend or hibernate

  My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate, the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I searched a little on the internet, and installed 'acpi-support' according to some advice but it does not help. Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks and regards! • No 'Hardware' tab in audio and no profiles

  If I run the 12.x ubuntu (latest May 2012) from the CD, I get full audio settings, and sound playing in speaker. Profiles let me change analog to digital in/out. Once I run install from the same CD onto the laptop HD, once it boots the first time, after selecting audio settings, there is no 'Hardware' tab and no way to change profiles. Worst part is the audio device is set to SPDIF so nothing comes out of the speakers. Very off how booting off the CD I can get analog audio, and installing to HD and booting seems to limit the profile to something useless. Laptop is a 5 year old Dell D820 with Nvidea 128meg video on a 1920x1200 screen and T7200 CPU. I suspect if I could get the damn HARDWARE tab back in audio settings, I could just select the proper Analog profile - just as is the case if running from a boot CD. Searched the web, no similar problems found... any help appreciated!

• Removing Menu Items from Window Tabs

  So you're working on your NetBeans Platform application and you notice that when you right-click on tabs in the predefined windows, e.g., the Projects window, you see a long list of popup menus. For whatever the reason is, you decide you don't want those popup menus. You right-click the application and go to the Branding dialog. There you uncheck the checkboxes that are unchecked below: As you can see above, you've removed three features, all of them related to closing the windows in your application. Therefore, "Close" and "Close Group" are now gone from the list of popup menus: But that's not enough. You also don't want the popup menus that relate to maximizing and minimizing the predefined windows, so you uncheck those checkboxes that relate to that: And, hey, now they're gone too: Next, you decide to remove the feature for floating, i.e., undocking the windows from the main window: And now they're gone too: However, even when you uncheck all the remaining checkboxes, as shown here... You're still left with those last few pesky popup menu items that just will not go away no matter what you do: The reason for the above? Those actions are hardcoded into the action list, which is a bug. Until it is fixed, here's a handy workaround: Set an implementation dependency on "Core - Windows" (core.window). That is, set a dependency and then specify that it is an implementation dependency, i.e., that you'll be using an internal class, not one of the official APIs. In one of your existing modules, or in a new one, make sure you have (in addition to the above) a dependency on Lookup API and Window System API. • Headset undetected when plugged in

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my machine which was running windows 7. I have been trying to configure the audio to work exactly as it used to work in Windows but never been able to do so. I have followed this link exactly. I am still not getting the required configuration. aslamixer command shows me with 5 adjustable controls as shown below Master "adjustable" Speaker "adjustable" PCM "adjustable" Front "adjustable" AND Beep "adjustable" Mic Jack Mic In or Lin In S/PDIF OO "in a box" S/PDIF D OO "in a box" S/PDIF P DIGITAL or Analog M It does not detect the headset jack when plugged in. I here mean to say that the sound form the speakers does not go off when I plug in my headset jack. How can I make this working. Some other googling also did not help. I am on Hp Pavilion DV7 machine. The chip is IDT 92HD75B3X5 and the card is HDA ATI SB.

It's at its 13th download attempt at the moment of writing. The actual downloads seem to be done just fine, but whatever it does after downloading seems to be failing. I tried removing openjdk-6, but then it wanted to install openjdk-7 instead, with the same result, hanging at openjdk-7-jre-headless instead. I also tried changing servers from my local (Danish) to the main server. No luck. It's also keeping me from upgrading alle the other packages. What to do?

  I remember reading on the Canonical website around the launch of the Ubuntu One Music store that after revenue was divided between Canonical, 7 digital and the artists involved that all profit or a significant percentage would be donated to a charity. This information has either disappeared from their website or my detective skills have failed me once more. Does anybody happen to understand the break down of revenue generated by the Ubuntu One Music Store or even know where to find this information. Also it would be useful to know which charity benefits from this. (Not that that would impact upon my purchases or send me running to iTunes. ;) Promise)

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

  I am learning the multi-threading and timer in C# now. But it seems I can't find a good solution. For example, I would like to see how many addition problems that I can solve within 1 min. I would like my program to have A digital clock to count for 60 seconds in the top of my Console. Print a math problem in the middle of my console wait for my input. When 60 seconds is done, stop the math problem challenges immediately (most of time, it is still waiting for my input, but we will stop it immediately). Count how many correct problems that I have solved. Two challenges of the program now. a) how can we make sure the print time and math problem do not mess up. b) how can we stop the math challenges part immediately after time is up

• Multiple Audio Issues

  I am having issues with my audio on Ubuntu 12.04, I will try and give as much detail as possible so sorry if there's too much detail. The Problem Audio plays from both speakers and headphone regardless of what connector I choose and regardless of the profile I use. The microphone is constantly being played through headphones & speakers. The headphone audio is extremely quiet but plays from both ears when I select "Headphones" for the connector in Sound Settings. The headphone audio only plays from one ear and is quiet (but not as quiet as above) when I select "Analogue Output" for the connector in Sound Settings. I can only select "Headphones" as the connector in Sound Settings if I set the profile to either "Analogue Stereo Output/Duplex", all others only allow me to choose "Analogue Output" for the connector. Despite the headphone sound issues, the speaker sound is fine apart from the fact that I am not able to select which output is used, they just both play. My headphone and microphone are plugged into the front and my speakers are plugged into the back. What I have tried I have put everything in alsamixer to 100 apart from "Front Mic Boost" which I have set to 0.   I am looking for recommendations on a digital Scrum Board which can be shared over the internet. I imagine something like a big tablet on which you can draw and which remote users can access, too. I dislike Scrum software because I think one major benefit of a Scrum Board is its physical presence. It should be hard to ignore. The best solution would be two big tablets on which you can draw and which can be synchronized. Has anyone got product recommendations for something like this? Or would you rather use a software?
