    Is there any fast way to find the largest power of 10 smaller than a given number? I'm using this algorithm, at the moment, but something inside myself dies anytime I see it: 10**( int( math.log10(x) ) ) # python pow( 10, (int) log10(x) ) // C I could implement simple log10 and pow functions for my problems with one loop each, but still I'm wondering if there is some bit magic for decimal numbers.

  • How do I convert a System::IO::Stream^ to an LPCSTR for PlaySound?

    I'm trying to embed and then play back a .wav file in a C++/CLI app but all the examples I've seen which use PlaySound are in VB. I can't see how to get froma Stream^ to the LPCSTR which PlaySound requires: System::IO::Stream^ s = Assembly::GetExecutingAssembly()->GetManifestResourceStream ("Ping.wav"); LPCSTR buf = s->????; PlaySound(buf, NULL, SND_ASYNC|SND_MEMORY|SND_NOWAIT); I guess I need some sort of horrible .net memory conversion magic.

    Hi, how do most of antivirus software block file system io in case of an infected file? I suppose all the magic resides in some custom kext to do that. Can anyone point me to some topics on this?     This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with an integer argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.)

Given that most of my commits are prefixed with an issue number, I wondered if there is some magic command for searching for the commit SHA from part of its message. I know it's easy to do a git log and work from there, but I want more easy :)

    One of the downsides of web.config/app.config is that it's just Magic Strings everywhere, since it's just an XML file. Interpreted languages like PHP or Ruby have the advantage that the configuration is just code that is executed. In .net, doing stuff in code requires a redeployment, which defeats the purpose. Now, before I build my own web.config replacement based on Boo or PowerShell I wanted to know if there is an existing one?

    Hi, I want to run C# programs on my HTC Magic, I can find the mono app on the Android market but I have no clue on how to run C# using. The code is just for fun, I don't want official support and such. After coding Visual Basic on windows mobile, I really want to code C# on Android, whether directly using some sort of editor if exists, or compiling it on a PC then installing it on Android.     I'm really banging my head onto this one. I can't make the Custom Configuration to work with NUnit. It kept on failing to read the configuration file. I followed carefully this article: http://devlicio.us/blogs/derik_whittaker/archive/2006/11/13/app-config-and-custom-configuration-sections.aspx placed the references in the Unit test class App.Config, still everything failed. Is there some sort of a magic setting to do here?

    I'm working with MS Excel interop in C# and I don't understand how this particular line of code works: var excel = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application(); where Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application is an INTERFACE defined as: [Guid("000208D5-0000-0000-C000-000000000046")] [CoClass(typeof(ApplicationClass))] public interface Application : _Application, AppEvents_Event { } I'm thinking that some magic happens when the interface is decorated with a CoClass attribute, but still how is it possible that we can create an instance of an interface with a new keyword? Shouldn't it generate a compile time error?

    Many Windows apps (like Skype or MSN for instance) don't let you start multiple instances, rather trying to run it a 2nd time just leaves the existing version running. Is this typically done in some simple way - the start-menu shortcut is a 'wrapper' app around the main app - or is there some registry magic you can do to delegate the problem to Windows itself? Specifically dealing with Win32 here (unmanaged C++) but happy to hear more general solutions as long as they are workable on Windows XP or alter.

  • AWStats on Plesk consumes all of CPU and crashes server - how do you disable plesk

    I have Plesk 9.0.1 running on a Red Hat server. Every week or so at about 4:10 AM the server locks up. At this time the server CPU usage shoots from 4% to 90% at the same time as a mass of awstats.pl processes start (I can't see how many as my datat only shows the top 30 processes, but all of these are awstats.pl). I turned off awstats through the Plesk control panel for all but 5 domains but I still get 90% CPU usage and at least 30 instances of awstats.pl happening at 4:10am as usual. Does anyone know why this may be? Does anyone know how to disable awstats (I have stats covered using piwik)? Or how do I uninstall awstats without snarling up Plesk?

  • Sudo yum seems to fail on CentOS, but works fine after sudo -i

    I am currently having some trouble with yum through sudo. For some reason, it does not seem to work: aron@graviton [/var/log]# sudo yum clean all There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib64/python2.4/lib-dynload/datetime.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.4.3 (#1, Sep 3 2009, 15:37:37) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq The strange thing, however, is that it works fine when I gain root privileges through sudo -i first. Any ideas what might be causing this problem?

    How do I achieve the equivalent of nc -q in Redhat 5? Details? nc -q -1 local host ${PORT} ${CMD} In Ubuntu, nc may be use as above, with the -q option. See manpage. -q after EOF on stdin, wait the specified number of seconds and then quit. If seconds is negative, wait forever. However, this option is not available in Redhat 5. See manpage. (Note: The Red Hat website is horrible to search, if someone finds their manpage for nc, please edit this post or comment with the new link).
