• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

  Given a EF-Code First CTP5 entity layout like: public class Person { ... } which has a collection of: public class Address { ... } which has a single association of: public class Mailbox { ... } I want to do: PersonQuery.Include(x => x.Addresses).Include("Addresses.Mailbox") WITHOUT using a magic string. I want to do it using a lambda expression. I am aware what I typed above will compile and will bring back all Persons matching the search criteria with their addresses and each addresses' mailbox eager loaded, but it's in a string which irritates me. • CSS3PIE: Internet Explorer 6 doesn't download PIE.htc

  I'm using the very impressive CSS3PIE (http://css3pie.com) library to add support for CSS3 styles in IE6-8. It works fine in versions 7 and 8 and took a lot of pain out of the process. However, in IE6 no CSS3 styles are shown at all. In fact, looking at the server logs, I can see that IE6 doesn't even download the PIE.htc file, which is necessary for the magic to work. The content type for the file is set correctly as text/x-component, it's referenced by absolute URL, and works fine in IE7 and 8. I'm using Compass (www.compass-style.org) and the PIE helper which makes the CSS look like this: #shopping_cart { behavior: url("/media/static/css/PIE.htc"); position: relative; border-radius: 10px; } I can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause IE6 to skip the behavior definition altogether? Cheers, Jonas

• SQL Server version of MySQL's group_concat and escaped strings

  I only have the Express versions of MS SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio. Given that I can't create a SQL Server project and therefore CLR solutions are out of the question, I've attempted to use select col1, stuff( ( select ' ' + col2 from StrConcat t1 where t2.col1 = t1.col1 for xml path('') ),1,1,'') from StrConcat t2 group by col1 order by col1 to get a row concatenated col2. col2 is a varchar field with some control characters like & and \n. When it is concatenated with the above SQL, it appears to escape those control characters ie. & becomes & amp ; and \n becomes &#xOD, which is not what I want it to do. So, the question is, what black box magic is causing that to happen?

• Regular Expressions: RegEx for determining valid PHP class property names?

  I am using PHP's magic __set and __get methods to access a private array in a class. I want to make sure the property names requested (i.e. $myObj->FakeProperty) are valid according to PHP property name rules before accessing them. My current RegEx isn't doing the trick; with my test values, _12 always falls through the cracks. I'm not actually sure that my test values even represent a realistic representation of what is and isn't allowed for PHP class property names, but I'm not really too concerned about it, just that I have some sort of rudimentary check in place. • XSD NewDataSet Namespace?

  I'm running XSD on an XML file and getting something strange. Depending on the depth of elements it produces a 'NewDataSet' element which will then is prefixed in Visual Studio to my auto-generated classes which is something I don't want. I've got quite a complex structure and am just trying to add a simple version element or attribute which is causing the problem. The simplest demo I could come up with is this. <A> <B>Text</B> </A> Running this through XSD says there is an element called 'NewDataSet' which may or may not appear and will prefix namespaces. <A> <B> <C>Text</C> </B> </A> This example works as expected and there is no magic 'NewDataSet' element in the generated XSD file.

• Is there an equivalence to CDOSYS AutoGenerateTextBody in .NET

  I'm porting some VBScript code which generates emails using the standard CDOSYS Message object. The Message oject has a property AutoGenerateTextBody which when true will cause it to automatically create the TextBody property value when you assign HTML to the HTMLBody property. Hence creating the typical text/plain and text/html alternatives in the message body. However .NET appears to be missing this function. The MailMessage object does have the ability to create alternative views but there doesn't appear to be a way to easily create the text body content from the HTML content. I'm not necessarily looking for an auto-magic option but I do need a solution to taking what is an HTML string and converting it to a reasonable plain text representation. Just dropping all the HTML markup doesn't cut it. Is there a tool buried somewhere in the existing .NET framework that can do this?

• Multi-part gzip file random access (in Java)

  This may fall in the realm of "not really feasible" or "not really worth the effort" but here goes. I'm trying to randomly access records stored inside a multi-part gzip file. Specifically, the files I'm interested in are compressed Heretrix Arc files. (In case you aren't familiar with multi-part gzip files, the gzip spec allows multiple gzip streams to be concatenated in a single gzip file. They do not share any dictionary information, it is simple binary appending.) I'm thinking it should be possible to do this by seeking to a certain offset within the file, then scan for the gzip magic header bytes (i.e. 0x1f8b, as per the RFC), and attempt to read the gzip stream from the following bytes. The problem with this approach is that those same bytes can appear inside the actual data as well, so seeking for those bytes can lead to an invalid position to start reading a gzip stream from. Is there a better way to handle random access, given that the record offsets aren't known a priori?

• How do I memoize expensive calculations on Django model objects?

  I have several TextField columns on my UserProfile object which contain JSON objects. I've also defined a setter/getter property for each column which encapsulates the logic for serializing and deserializing the JSON into python datastructures. The nature of this data ensures that it will be accessed many times by view and template logic within a single Request. To save on deserialization costs, I would like to memoize the python datastructures on read, invalidating on direct write to the property or save signal from the model object. Where/How do I store the memo? I'm nervous about using instance variables, as I don't understand the magic behind how any particular UserProfile is instantiated by a query. Is __init__ safe to use, or do I need to check the existence of the memo attribute via hasattr() at each read?   In the pickle module documentation there is a snippet of example code: reader = pickle.load(open('save.p', 'rb')) which upon first read looked like it would allocate a system file descriptor, read its contents and then "leak" the open descriptor for there isn't any handle accessible to call close() upon. This got me wondering if there was any hidden magic that takes care of this case. Diving into the source, I found in Modules/_fileio.c that file descriptors are closed by the fileio_dealloc() destructor which led to the real question. What is the duration of the file object returned by the example code above? After that statement executes does the object indeed become unreferenced and therefore will the fd be subject to a real close(2) call at some future garbage collection sweep? If so, is the example line good practice, or should one not count on the fd being released thus risking kernel per-process descriptor table exhaustion?

  This is mostly just out of curiosity, and is potentially a silly question. :) I have a method like this: public void MyMethod(string arg1, string arg2, int arg3, string arg4, MyClass arg5) { // some magic here } None of the arguments can be null, and none of the string arguments can equal String.Empty. Instead of me having a big list of: if(arg1 == string.Empty || arg1 == null) { throw new ArgumentException("issue with arg1"); } is there a quicker way to just check all the string arguments?   Does anyone have some idea as to how come questions posted here on SO are showing up so quickly on Google?. Sometimes questions submitted are appearing as the first 10 entries or so - on the first page within 30 minutes of submitting a question. Pray tell, what sort of magic is being wielded here? Anybody have some ideas, suggestions?. My first thought is that they have info in their sitemap that tells google robots to trawl every N minutes or so - is that whats going on? BTW, I am aware that simply instructing Googlebots to scan your site every N minutes will not work if you dont have quality information (that is constantly being updated on your site). I'd just like to know if there is something else that SO may be doing right (apart from the marvelous content of course)

• Wrapping \NewEnviron into \newenvironment fails

I am trying to wrap an environment created with \NewEnviron (package 'environ') into an old good \newenvironment: \NewEnviron{test}{aaa(\BODY)bbb} \newenvironment{wrapper}{\begin{test}}{\end{test}} \begin{wrapper} debug me \end{wrapper} However, this gives me a strange error: LaTeX Error: \begin{test} on input line 15 ended by \end{wrapper}. LaTeX Error: \begin{wrapper} on input line 15 ended by \end{document}. If I replace \NewEnviron{test}{aaa(\BODY)bbb} with \newenvironment{test}{aaa(}{)bbb} — everything works as expected! It seems like \NewEnviron fails to find its end for some reason. I'm trying to do some magic with 'floatfig' wrapped into a \colorbox so I need a way to convert \colorbox to an environment and wrap it into another one. I can define a new command but it's not a very good idea. Thanks in advance!

  Hello, I have a DataGridView that is being filled with data from a table. Inside this table is a column called 'group' that has the ID of an individual group in another table. What I would like to do, is when the DataGridView is filled, instead of showing the ID contained in 'group', I'd like it to display the name of the group. Is there some type of VB.net 'magic' that can do this, or do I need to cross-reference the data myself?   I've been using Python for most of my web projects lately, and have come to really love the Pylons MVC framework. I like the incredible transparency (lack of magic), the built-in components they selected (sqlalchemy, formencode, routes), and the ability to easily change things up (use a different ORM or templating engine). Moving forward, due to constraints at my company, I'm going to be trying out Ruby rather than Python. I'm wondering if people with experience in both have any recommendations for a Ruby framework that is comparable to Pylons. Python is to Django as Ruby is to Rails Python is to Pylons as Ruby is to ?

• Is it possible to implement a GC.GetAliveInstancesOf<T>() (for use in debugging)?

  Hi, I know this was answered before, but I'd like to pose a somewhat different question. Is there any conceivable way to implement GC.GetAliveInstancesOf(), that can be evaluated in Visual Studio Debug Watch window? Sasha Goldstein shows one solution in this article, but it requires every class you want to query inherit from a specific base class. I'll emphasize that I only want to use this method during debugging, so I don't care that the GC may change an object's address in memory during runtime. One idea might be to somehow harness the !dumpheap –type command of SOS, and do some magic trick to create a temporary variable and have it point out to the memory address printed by SOS. Does anyone have a solution that works?

Inevitably these changes were always in some massively difficult code base and caused many issues. My question has a couple of parts: While software is a tool for businesses to make their lives easier, at what point do we as developers suggest a change in business process rather than in the software as the "magic bullet" to solve a particular problem. How do we as developers evangelize a certain level of reverence for the software as well as the difficulty involved in making changes simply to support the quirks of the business? I understand that these changes in business processes promote our industry, but in an analogy my father would understand: Which is easier, to melt down a hammer to forge a screwdriver to drive screws or to simply use nails since your hammer is already awesome...?

• Start exe even with missing dependency dlls?

  In Dotnet2.0 and later a program refuses to start if one of its dependent (static referenced) dlls are missing. With Dotnet1.1 and 1.0 the program started but crashed later when trying to use functionality of the missing assembly. I wonder if there is something like a compiler switch , configuration option or a dotnet [attribute] to allow me to start the app when certain dlls are missing. Is it possible without moidfying the sourcecode (execpt by applying some Attriutes)? I don't want to manualy load assemblies by programcode or use IOC-Framworks. Update: With "static referenced dlls" i mean the opposite of dynamicly loading a dll in my own programcode using reflection and Assembly.Loadxxxx(). Update 2010-12-25: This scenario happens for example if you want to use Log4net with Dotnet4 clientprofile together with a WinForms-Aplication: Log4net requires System.Web.dll that is not in Dotnet4-Clientprofile. You must install dotnet4-web-support to use the winforms-aplication that is compiled against log4net unless there is some magic Compiler-switch/Attribute/Configuration that i am still looking for.

• Type-safe, generic, empty Collections with static generics

  I return empty collections vs. null whenever possible. I switch between two methods for doing so using java.util.Collections: return Collections.EMPTY_LIST; return Collections.emptyList(); where emptyList() is supposed to be type-safe. But I recently discovered: return Collections.<ComplexObject> emptyList(); return Collections.<ComplexObject> singletonList(new ComplexObject()); etc. I see this method in Eclipse Package Explorer: <clinit> () : void but I don't see how this is done in the source code (1.5). How is this magic tomfoolerie happening!!
