    Here are the SQL Queries: $sql1 = "SELECT count(thread) AS total FROM comments WHERE thread=1 AND parent_id=0 "; $sql2 = "SELECT count(thread) AS total FROM comments, users WHERE thread=1 AND parent_id=0 AND users.user_id=comments.user_id "; $sql3 = "SELECT comments.*, users.username AS username FROM comments, users WHERE thread=1 AND parent_id=0 AND users.user_id=comments.user_id ORDER BY date LIMIT 10, 5 "; My question is why would $sql1 and $sql2 would return two different results? $sql1 returns 61 rows $sql2 returns 56 rows The 5th line in $sql2 is just for testing, is not required, is just a variation of $sql1 which gets the total rows for a pagination.

  • Ruby on Rails: Best way to save search queries in a database

    For a RoR app I'm helping develop, I need to save all search queries in a database so I can analyze them later. My plan right now is to create a Result model and table, and just save each search query's text in that table, along with a user's ID, the time, etc. However, the app has about 15,000 users, so I'm afraid the single table approach won't be super efficient when it comes time to parse that data. (The database is setup via MySQL, if that factors in at all.) Am I just being paranoid? Is there a Ruby gem that handles this sort of thing, or a better approach I could take? Any input would be appreciated.

    I want to list the number of items for each list. How can I find this number in a single query, rather than a query for each list? Is it possible to make a single query here?

    I'm fairly new to PHP/MySql and using queries in general. I was just wondering if there's any benefit to using "AS" in a query other than trying to make it look cleaner? Does it speed up the query at all? I probably could have figured this out by a google search but I wanted to ask my first question and see how this works.   • Optimizing MySQL queries with IN operator

    I have a MySQL database with a fairly large table where the products are. Each of them has its own id and categoryId field where there is a category id belongs to this product. Now I have a query that pulls out products from given categories such as: SELECT * FROM products WHERE categoryId IN ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 34, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 ) Of course, come a WHERE clause and ORDER BY sort but not in this thing. Let's say that these products is 250k and the visits are over 100k per day. Under such conditions in the table slow_log registered weight of these queries with large generation time. Do you have any ideas how to optimize the given problem? Table engine is MyISAM.

  • Mongo: Finding from multiple queries

    New to Mongo here. I'm using the PHP lib and trying to work out how I can find in a collection from multiple queries. I could do this by repeating the query with a different query, but I wondered if it can be done in one. I.e. $idsToLookFor = array(2124,4241,5553); $query = $db->thisCollection->find(array('id' => $idsToLookFor)); That's what I'd like to do. However it doesn't work. What I'm trying to do is find a set of results for all the id's at one time. Possible or just do a findOne on each with a foreach/for?

  • Complex SQL queries (DELETE)?

    Hello all, I'm working with three tables, and for simplicity's sake let's call them table A, B, and C. Both tables A and B have a column called id, as well as one other column, Aattribute and Battribute, respectively. Column c also has an id column, and two other columns which hold values for A.id and B.id. Now, in my code, I have easy access to values for both Aattribute and Battribute, and want to delete the row at C, so effectively I want to do something like this: DELETE FROM C WHERE aid=(SELECT id FROM A WHERE Aattribute='myvalue') AND bid=(SELECT id FROM B WHERE Battribute='myothervalue') But this obviously doesn't work. Is there any way to make a single complex query, or do I have to run three queries, where I first get the value of A.id using a SELECT with 'myvalue', then the same for B.id, then use those in the final query? [Edit: it's not letting me comment, so in response to the first comment on this: I tried the above query and it did not work, I figured it just wasn't syntactically correct. Using MS Access, for what it's worth. ]

    I'm using an Apple bluetooth keybord to control my Linux synergy server. SSH tunneling, Mouse, Keyboard, and Copy&Paste all work. Linux sees all the media/app keys that are on top of the F# keys correctly. However if I press any of those keys while controlling my OSX client, nothing happens on the client.     Greetings all, I'm trying to implement driver for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our head office. Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that?     Hi everybody, I am making making a program and I want to have a Aero Glass set of controls just like Windows Media Player, I found this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2006/04/18/578637.aspx but it just draws black. I also found a control that had the media player controls built in right ton the glass but it was no good it didn't want to render right and made different parts of my program not work. Any controls, or ways to extend the Aero glass so I can at least add my own buttons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :) BTW C# only. :)

  • Joomla 1.5 Media Manager sets incorrect file permissions when uploading

    Howdy all, I have a Joomla 1.5 installation running on Windows Server 2008, installed via the Web Platform Installer. When uploading images with the media manager (native uploader, not the flash bulk uploader), the files arrive on the server correctly, but are given incorrect permissions. Specifically, the IIS_IUSRS group is not given access to the file. I might be incorrect about what group/user is SUPPOSED to get access to the files, but so far, I've found that unless I give IIS_IUSRS access to the uploaded files, they won't appear on the site or in the media manager (appear as broken images). Once I give IIS_IUSRS permission to the files, they work fine. So far, all the research I've done has led me to linux specific fixes that involve either changing the umask on the server, or directly modifying the Joomla codebase to add an appropriate chmod command to the upload process, but I really don't want to modify Joomla directly. I have to believe there's a setting here somewhere that will do the job, either on the Joomla or Windows side of the equation. Any thoughts? Scott

Everything works fine but there is this annoying dialog every time from the browser asking me if I want to save or open the file. My answer is always "open" the file so is there a way I can make it default and not bring up the dialog each time? Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? What is the best way how to do it? Example: Device connects to our Linux server. New middleware instance is created (on the server) which announces itself to one of the running services (details are not important). The service is responsible for making sure that device's time is synchronized. So it asks the middleware what is the device's time, driver translates it to device language (protocol) and sends the message, device responses and driver again translates it for the service. This might seem as a bit overkill for such a simple request but imagine there are more complex requests which the driver must translate, also there are several versions of the device which use different protocol, etc. but would use the same time sync service. The goal is to abstract the devices through the drivers to be able to use the same service to communicate with them. Another example: we find out that the remote communications with the device are down. So we send somebody out with PDA, he connects to the device using USB cable. Starts up the application which has the same functionality as the timesync service. Again middleware instance is created (on the PDA) to translate communication between application and the device this time only using USB/serial media not TCP/IP as in previous example.     Hi, I want to programmtically detect the state of movie currently being played in Windows Media Player. i..e if the movie is maximized I need to find that it is maximized and put the word "MAXIMIZED" in text file, if the movie is paused I need to capture PAUSED in text file, if movie is stopped I need to capture STOPPED in text file. The capturing needs to happen in the background i.e. totally transparent to end user as the user takes action while watching the movie on Windows Media player I am planning to achieve this using Visual Basic 6.0 Kindly provide me inputs / pointers on how to go about this. Then, a sub-folder below that needs to be available to a subset of members from the parent's member group. Any thoughts on how this can best be accomplished? I'll render the actual file download links with a user control, but how should I set up this access control on the back end? I need a member-group picker and a multiple member picker.     How can I put in additional methods for manipulating color ? Best would be to overload the struct System.Windows.Media.Color. It is NOT a class (in c#). Now i'm tinkering with putting (in the same file for testing or must i put it in a different file) an namespace (Silverlight Application36 or System.Windows.Media ?) and a partial struct Color Normalize (double R, ...). I should see MyColor.Normalize() start being recognized by intellisense ? I'm not. I found some articles about creating temporary tables and using joins, but I am unsure. I'm new to serious SQL, and have been cutting and pasting results from one into the next.     Does anyone know of a way to interface with a Social Media Aggregator using Powershell. For Instance, I would like to update my global status on digsby using Powershell. Digsby would then fan the message out to Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Etc.. I am open to using any Social Media Aggregator that can do this.. Digsby, Seesmic, Ping.fm TweetDeek, etc.. If any of these programs have a com interface or something like it I'm sure who ever implements this first will have a large gain in users.

    Hi I have 2 models in my django code: class ModelA(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=255) description = models.CharField(max_length=255) created_by = models.ForeignKey(User) class ModelB(models.Model): category = models.CharField(max_length=255) modela_link = models.ForeignKey(ModelA, 'modelb_link') functions = models.CharField(max_length=255) created_by = models.ForeignKey(User) Say ModelA has 100 records, all of which may or may not have links to ModelB Now say I want to get a list of every ModelA record along with the data from ModelB I would do: list_a = ModelA.objects.all() Then to get the data for ModelB I would have to do for i in list_a: i.additional_data = i.modelb_link.all() However this runs a query on every instance of i. Thus making 101 queries to run. Is there any way of running this all in just 1 query. Or at least less than the 101 queries. I've tried putting in ModelA.objects.select_related().all() but this didn't seem to have any effect. Thanks

    I've written about various breeds of social shopping in the past, so I decided to give some thought into a categorization with examples. Below I've listed the different types of social shopping I've observed and some companies that support them. Comments and Ratings -- Commenting on products has been around almost as long as e-commerce. Two popular players in this space are BazaarVoice and PowerReviews. Most shoppers prefer relying on peer reviews rather than retailer descriptions, so the influence over sales is very strong. f-commerce -- A new term that was sure to rear its ugly head when retailers started allowing shopping on Facebook, And its all Elastic Path and Alvenda's fault! Co-shopping -- Retailers like Wet Seal are enabling multiple people to shop together online. This is particularly applicable to fashion, where the real-time exchange of opinions is important. I actually tried this with a co-worker and its pretty cool. Bragging -- Blippy is Twitter for shoppers, allowing purchases to be "tweeted" so you can keep up with your friends. I get alerted when friends download music or apps from iTunes because chances are I'll be interested as well. This covert influence is one-up'ed by Snatter, a service that gives people discounts for tweeting or posting promotions from retailers. This is the petri dish of viral marketing. Advice -- Combine the bragging of Blippy and the opinions from BazaarVoice and you'd get ShopSocially, a social network dedicated to spreading product knowledge amongst informed shoppers. I'm sure if I gave it more thought, a few more types would come to mind, but I've got to get back to work. Now is not the time to be blogging at Oracle!
