• SharePoint 2010, Cloud, and the Constitution

  The other evening an article on the Red Tap Chronicles caught my eye. The article written by Bob Sullivan titled "The Constitutional Issues of Cloud Computing" was very interesting in regards to the direction most of the technical world is going. We all have been inundated about utilizing cloud computing for reasons of price, availability, or even scalability; but what Bob brings up is a whole separate view of why a business might not want to move toward the cloud for services or applications. The overall point to the article was pretty simple. It all boiled down to the summation that hosting "Things" in the cloud (Email, Documents, etc…) are interpreted differently under the law regarding constitutional search and seizure than say a document or item that is kept in physical form at a business or home. Where if you physically have it stored someone would have to get a warrant to search for it or seize it, but if it is stored off in the cloud and the ISV or provider is subpoenaed for the item then they will usually give access to the information. Obviously this is a big difference in interpretation of the law and the constitution due to technology. So you might ask "Where does this fit in with SharePoint? Well the overall push for this next version of SharePoint is one that gives a business ultimate flexibility to utilize the Cloud. In one example this upcoming version gracefully lends itself to Multi Tenancy so that online or "Cloud" hosting would be possible by Service Providers. Another aspect to the upcoming version is that it has updated its ability to store content outside of the database and in a cheaper commoditized storage facility. This is called Remote Blob Storage (or RBS) which is the next evolution of External Blob Storage (or EBS). With this new functionality that business might look forward to it is extremely important for them to understand that they might be opening themselves up to laws that do not need a warrant to search or seize their information that is stored in the cloud. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next few months. Usually the laws change slowly in comparison to technology so it might be a while until we see if it is actually constitutional to treat someone's content on the cloud differently as it would be in their possession, however until there is some type of parity that happens or more concrete laws regarding the differences be very careful about what you put in the cloud.   I have an airport extreme with a drive connected, and use it for backing up snow leopard macs. I have an occasional problem with one of them that says "the backup disk image ... is already in use" and it fails to backup. Any ideas?

• How do I open files from the command line in Mac

  I'm following a video tutorial where the author (who uses textmate) can open files by using "mate". for example mate .git/config will open this config file I'm using textwrangler however so I don't have that option. I did try edit .README once when i tried to open the README file of an application, but it opened a blank README file in textwrangler instead of the file with the text in it so any idea how I can open this .git/config file (or any other file) using textwrangler? I'm using Mac snow leopard

• How do I get GNU screen not to start in my home directory in OS X?

  GNU Screen (screen) behaves differently on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6 (Snow Leopard) compared to Linux (at least Ubuntu, Red Hat, and Gentoo) and OS X 10.4 (Tiger). In 10.5 and 10.6, new screens (made with screen or ^A c) always places me in my home directory ~. In Linux and OS X Tiger, new screens have a pwd of wherever the screen was created originally. • Is it illegal to download (from torrents) software that you have already legally bought?

  With Snow Leopard now out, I decided to order myself a copy. But as I bought it online, it takes six to eight weeks three to five days for to to arrive via snail mail, but I want it now. Seeing that I have already legally bought a license for Snow Leopard, can I download a retail version of Snow Leopard from a torrent, without breaking the law? I understand that the law varies from country to country, so I acknowledge that this may be a tough question to answer sufficiently. I am in Australia, so I suppose I am mostly interested in answeres regarding Australian law, but other counties (or a general response) are also fine NOTE: SuperUser is NOT a legal resource and any advice/answers here should NOT be used as legal advice in any way.

• Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

• How to exchange the HDD of a MacBook Pro?

  I've bought an Solid State Drive (SSD) for my MacBook Pro, and now I need to exchange it somehow. Would this strategy work? 1) Create an backup with Time Machine (Snow Leopard) 2) Then replace the old HDD 3) Insert the new HDD 4) Install Snow Leopard (same version as previously used) 5) Open up Time Machine, and recover from the last backup I'm not sure about how to do the last part. Is that hard? What are the neccessary steps? Or is there a better way? Maybe I don't need to re-install Snow Leopard completely? Maybe the Install CD already offers an option to recover from Backup?

• Passenger: "Missing these required gems redgreen"

  Hello, total ruby newbie, trying to setup a Rails/MongoDB application on Mac OS X Snow leopard. Installed Ruby 1.9.1 and RubyGems 1.3.7, which ruby and which gem point to the same directory. I'm using the Snow Leopard built-in apache and Passenger 2.2.11. I'm using the rails template from the mongo-site which seems to work okay overall. The exact error that passenger gives me is: /Users/User/Sites/feuerapp/vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. Use #requirement **Notice: C extension not loaded. This is required for optimum MongoDB Ruby driver performance. You can install the extension as follows: gem install bson_ext If you continue to receive this message after installing, make sure that the bson_ext gem is in your load path and that the bson_ext and mongo gems are of the same version. Missing these required gems: redgreen You're running: ruby 1.9.1.376 at /usr/local/bin/ruby rubygems 1.3.7 at /Users/User/.gem/ruby/1.9.1, /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1 Runrake gems:installto install the missing gems. • Alpha plugin in GStreamer not working

  Hi! I'm trying to compose two videos, and I'm using the alpha plug-in to make the white color transparent. To test the alpha plug-in I'm creating the pipeline with gst-launch. The first test I done was: gst-launch videotestsrc pattern=smpte75 \ ! alpha method=custom target-r=255 target-g=255 target-b=255 angle=10 \ ! videomixer name=mixer ! ffmpegcolorspace ! autovideosink \ videotestsrc pattern=snow ! mixer. and it works great! Then I created two videos with those lines: gst-launch videotestsrc pattern=snow ! ffmpegcolorspace ! theoraenc ! oggmux ! filesink location=snow.ogv gst-launch videotestsrc pattern=smpte75 ! ffmpegcolorspace ! theoraenc ! oggmux ! filesink location=bars75.ogv And changed the videotestsrc to a filesrc and it continues working gst-launch filesrc location=bars75.ogv ! decodebin2 \ ! alpha method=custom target-r=255 target-g=255 target-b=255 angle=10 \ ! videomixer name=mixer ! ffmpegcolorspace ! autovideosink \ filesrc location=snow.ogv ! decodebin2 ! alpha ! mixer. • Getting mysql row that doesn't conflict with another row

  I have two tables that link together through an id one is "submit_moderate" and one is "submit_post" The "submit_moderate" table looks like this id moderated_by post 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 4 Michael 60 Im using a simple query to get data from the "submit_post" table according to the "submit_moderate" table. $get_posts = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM submit_moderate WHERE moderated_by!='$user'"); $user is the person who is signed in. Now my problem is when I run this query, with the user 'Michael' it will retrieve this 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 Now technically this is correct however I don't want to retrieve the first row because 60 is associated with Michael as well as James. Basically I don't want to retrieve that value '60'. I know why this is happening however I can't figure out how to do this. I appreciate any hints or advice I can get.

I've already set up a firewall, but not very sure what to do in this case. Basically I'd like to use this server to only send emails as alert messages, not receiving any external emails. • How to test if SYN and FIN are both dropped at the same time in hping3?

  One of the rules to prevent unexpected attack is to prevent SYN & FIN being used together. SYN and FIN are both set $IPT -A INPUT -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,FIN SYN,FIN -j DROP How do I use hping to test if this iptable rule works? hping3 192.168.7.0 --keep -S -F??? Is this complete? When just type iptables -L, it shows: Chain INPUT (policy DROP) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere DROP tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp flags:FIN,SYN/FIN,SYN WHY do I need to put the "SYN,FIN" twice before drop? Is it because one for source and one for destination?

• What do you use to loadbalance IPv6 services?

  Hi, the current Linux software environment for IPv6 load balancing looks a bit grim. IPVS has rudimentary support for IPv6 but it's far from complete. NAT for IPv6 seems to be a no-go. Are there any other projects which aim for this goal? Does the IPv6 support in other OS look better? Are there any commercial products which have been successfully used in production environments with non-trivial load patterns? Or is it just that the time for IPv6 hasn't come... yet? ;) best regards, Michael

• Windows 7 Locking up Randomly

  I've got a Windows 7 machine that is locking up randomly. It can be in the first thirty seconds, or it can be hours later. There is nothing specific I can find that is running when it happens. When it locks, the screen doesn't change, but nothing moves. The waiting icon stops, the mouse stops, keyboard doesn't work, etc. I've even tried the crash on ctrl-scrl registry hack, and it won't even dump the kernel. I've run hardware diagnostics on the RAM and it doesn't find any problems. I would think it is a hardware issue, but on this exact same machine, I can run 64 Bit Ubuntu and it has zero problems. I've even tried reinstalling Windows7 from scratch, and it still happens. Anyone have any ideas? Any good diagnostic tools to recommend? Thanks! Michael

• USB Flash drive corrupt files - Help needed

  I have a 16gb usb flash drive with 8gb worth of data that I can't afford to lose. When I inserted it into my pc, inside the folder that I was storing the data I saw unintelligible characters and nothing in there would open. I ran, windows scandisk and the files (unfortunately) disappeared. I can see that the drive's space still appears to be taken up with data, about 8gb. What should I do to recover it? Is it possible? • Secure copy in Linux

  Hi all, I wanna simpy exchange 3 directories to a collegue's home directory (I dont have write access to that one) from my home directory, probably using secure copy if possible. I am not good with Linux command line, so I am not sure how to do that and I would very much appreciate it if somebody could help me a bit out with this. I guess it should look something like that scp -r /home/user1/directoy1 /home/user2/directoy1 scp -r /home/user1/directoy2 /home/user2/directoy2 scp -r /home/user1/directoy3 /home/user2/directoy3 Do I need to specify the login name of my collegue so that the files can be copied when he enters his password? • Virtual hosting in Varnish with individual vcl files for configuration

  I wish to use varnish to put in front of an apache and a tomcat on the same server. Depending on the ip requested, it goes to a different backend. This works. Now for most of the sites the default varnish logic will work just fine. However for some specific sites I wish to use custom VCL code. I can test for host name and include config files for the specific domains, but this only works inside the individual methods recv etc. Is there a way to include a complete set of instructions, in one file, per domain, without having to manage separate files for subdomain_recv, subdomain_fetch etc? And preferably without running seperate instances of varnish. When I try to include a file on the "root level" of default.vcl, I get a compilation error. Best regards, Michael

• Automator script to do a whois lookup

  I'd like to take an IP address from my Terminal, right click, select Services Whois and get the results back somehow. This doesn't exist so I'm wanting to create a simple Automator script to do that. But, I'm running into a few problems. Animating the Color of an Object Switching back to Silverlight in general, Mike Snow's next post is on Animating color of an object, such as text foreground. Tombstoning on the Win7 Mobile Platform And now back to WP7, Mike Snow is discussing Tombstoning... discussing the various aspects of it, and some code to use, if you haven't gotten your head around this one yet. What I tell Designers to give me... Integrating and Digital Zen David Kelley has a post up describing what he needs from designers to get his job done... I heard him discussing this at the Firestarter, and didn't realize he had written it up... these 8 items are things learned by doing, and should be discussed with your designers. Making the MS Adcontrol REALLY work on phone 7 David Kelley also has a post up discussing how to really get the Ad control working on WP7 apps... since I've seen lots of posts about this, having a definitive explanation from someone that's doing it is a good thing. Performance Optimization on Phone 7 In a break from his norm of discussing UX, David Kelley is talking about performance on WP7 devices in this post. Windows Phone From Scratch #10 – Visual State Part 2 When I saw Jesse Liberty's latest post, I realized I had missed his Part 2 of VSM for WP7 ... don't you miss it... this completes the good stuff from number 9 :) Windows Phone From Scratch #11 – Behaviors Jesse Liberty's latest Windows Phone from Scratch is up... and he's talking about Behaviors this time out... more of an overview or introduction to behaviors, but all good Show 112: Scott Guthrie on Silverlight 5 Erik Mork's latest Sparkling Client podcast is up and he was able to get some time with Scott Guthrie at the Firestarter. What I Learned in WP7 – Issue #1 Jeff Blankenburg decided to do another series, only this one isn't promised as every day... it's "What I Learned in WP7" ... and the first is up... good interesting bits found surrounding the WP7 device. The definitive guide to Notification Window in Silverlight 4 Laurent Duveau has a great post up that will have you doing Silverlight 'toast' notifications in no time... good descriptions and source. Lessons Learned in Personal Web Page Part 1: Dynamic XAML Jeremy Likness has rebuilt his personal website in Silverlight and is sharing some of that experience on his blog. This first post discusses the dynamic content. • Quicktips 1: Windows 7 Libraries; New website

  I’m working on several large posts right now. So in the interim, I’ve decided to do shorter posts that contain something I find very helpful. This is the first. I’ve been using Windows 7 since April 2010. It’s the first OS I’ve ever worked with that I actually enjoy. I’ve used many over the years (KERNAL; PC DOS; MS-DOS 3.x+; Windows 3.0, 3.11, 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, NT 3.51, NT 4, 2000, XP, Vista, 7; various GNU/Linux distros starting with Debian 1.2 – most recently Ubuntu 10.04; ProDOS, Mac OS 9.X, Mac OS X (through 10.4); SunOS, Solaris; AIX, z/OS; OpenVMS). Some were frustrating. Some tolerable. Some were “nice except for…”. OS X actually started out as seemingly “nice” until every single release contained a breaking change to some major API and they then decided to flip-off everyone who had bought a Mac as little as two years earlier with the release of Snow Leopard without PPC support. Windows 7 is the first one that’s just “nice” without any qualifiers. There are so many little features that add up to make it nice. Today’s Quicktip is one of them. Quicktip 1: Create a Library for your Code One thing I particularly like about Windows 7 is the Libraries feature in Explorer. Specifically the fact that you can create custom ones. I used to spend a lot of time opening new Explorer windows and navigating my various Visual Studio projects folders. Custom libraries allowed me to simplify that whole process. I now simply go to my “Code” library and there it all is. Adding a new library is easy. Open an Explorer window. If you aren’t in your Libraries when it opens, navigate to Libraries. Click the “New library” button. Give it a name. Then right click on the new library you created and go to “Properties”. Click the “Include a folder…” button. Choose the folder you want and press “Include folder”. Voilà! If you wish to add more, simply click “Include a folder…” again and repeat. It’s true that this is just a small time saver. But it’s one of those things that just adds a really nice touch. ------------------------ In a separate note, just before Christmas I finally finished and published my new website: http://www.bobtacoindustries.com/ . I waited to post here about it until I found time to incorporate a few things I hadn’t had the time to do when I pushed it out for its “soft open”. Most of them are now done and so my site is now formally open. I have no plans or intentions of moving my blog ( http://blog.bobtacoindustries.com/ points here). I quite like it here, both in terms of the interface and also in terms of the concept (and realization thereof) of pooling geek bloggers to create a pool of knowledge and helpful tips, tricks, techniques, and advice. I created it simply because I felt that it was time to have a website as I venture further into my return to the land of software development. The “For Devs” section should hopefully be useful to developers, particularly the links section. It’s my curated list of sites that I regularly visit to solve problems, to help answer questions on Twitter and the AppHub forums, and to learn new things. I’ll be adding links to it periodically and will be including topic areas as I become acquainted with them enough to form a proper list. WPF will likely be the first topic area added. If there are any links you think I should add to the existing topics, let me know! I warn in advance that I’m less inclined to add blogs; there are simply too many good blogs and I do not want to have hundreds per topic area. So blogs are limited primarily, though not exclusively, to acknowledged experts in the subject area who generally blog regularly about it and who usually are part of the team that develops the product or technology in question. I’m much more amenable to including individual blogs posts in the techniques subcategory in the appropriate topic area. Ultimately, it’s a collection of things I find interesting and helpful. So please no hard feelings if I don’t add a link you think is awesome. I may well think it’s awesome too, but conclude that it doesn’t fit with my goals for the dev links area.
