• Groovy support in Java EE projects

You should be able to combine Java/Groovy files, run them and thanks to the new Groovy JUnit tests support you can also run groovy tests together with your existing Java tests. • Using MLP, how to make a link to the according page in the other languages?

  the question says it all, but here's a bit more detail: I help building a bilingual website using MLP on TextPattern. It's trivial to put a link to the top level page of another language, but how to put a link to the current page in another language? Eg. /en/contact should link to /de/kontakt (the same article in another language). I'm sure there are some variables somewhere that I could put into the template that would be filled with the correct links. Thankx in advance. :)

• Running external commands improved a bit

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. • What do you miss when you have to use C instead of C++?

  This is not a question about which of the two languages is better than the other. I myself can't really decide. Pros and cons as always I guess. Also, if you feel you always would prefer C over C++, this poll is not for you :-). However, when I work in C projects I usually feel I'm missing a few language constructs more than others, which can be found in C++. For example, I usually miss (the obvious) classes, but seldomly templates (I always miss STL, but wouldn't call it a language construct). What do you miss when you have to use C instead of C++?

• Can we have some "coming soon" text in our app? Will Apple reject it? [closed]

  We're getting ready to push our app live. There's some functionality that's not ready yet; it's accessory, not crucial to the user, but it does provide some interesting context. If I have a button with the name of the feature (e.g., "Panoramic Views") and a "COMING SOON" label stuck over it, will Apple reject the submission? What if instead of a button it's just a text label somewhere announcing "Panoramic Views coming soon!"? I've seen some material online saying that "coming soon" is a no-no but all I could find in Apple's guidelines themselves was 2.9, "Apps that are "beta", "demo", "trial", or "test" versions will be rejected". Which is certainly not the case! Thanks in advance, any help greatly appreciated.

• Where, in an object oriented system should you, if at all, choose (C-style) structs over classes?

  C and most likely many other languages provide a struct keyword for creating structures (or something in a similar fashion). These are (at least in C), from a simplified point of view like classes, but without polymorphism, inheritance, methods, and so on. Think of an object-oriented (or multi paradigm) language with C-style structs. Where would you choose them over classes? Now, I don't believe they are to be used with OOP as classes seem to replace their purposes, but I wonder if there are situations where they could be preferred over classes in otherwise object-oriented programs and in what kind of situations. Are there such situations?

• What is the most concise, unambiguous syntax for operator associated methods (for overloading etc.) that doesn't pollute the namespace?

  Python tends to add double underscores before its built-in or overloadable operator methods, like __add(), whereas C++ requires declaring overloaded operators as operator + (Thing& thing) { /* code */ } for example. Personally I like the operator syntax because it seems to be more explicit and keeps these operator overloading methods separated from other methods without introducing weird prefix notation. What are your thoughts? Also, what about the case of built-in methods that are needed for the programming language to work properly? Is name mangling (like adding __ prefix or sys or something) the best solution here? What do you think about having another type of method declaration, like ... "system method" for lack of creativity at the moment. So there would be two kinds of declarations: int method_name() { ... } system int method_name() { ... } ... and the call would need to be different to distinguish between them. obj.method_name(); vs obj:method_name(); perhaps, assuming a language where : can be unambiguously used in this situation. obj.method_name() vs obj.(system method_name)() Sure, the latter is ugly, but the idea is to make the common case simple and system stuff should be kept out of the way. Maybe the Objective-C notation of method calls? [obj method_name]? Are there more alternatives? Please make suggestions.

If anyone of you does not know Composer yet, please be informed that: "Composer is a tool for dependency management in PHP. It allows you to declare the dependent libraries your project needs and it will install them in your project for you." So, what support do we have in NetBeans? • Webcam Q&A page with guest "speakers" ideas?

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. Most of these people doing the question and answers on webcam will have little technical knowledge, so extra cookie points goes to ease of use! Thanks for ideas in advance! • How to properly develop and deploy features for existing asp.net applications on IIS

  My question actually consists of multiple questions. I'm frequently reading about companies who deploy a small subset of features for a select amount of customers using the live "database". Ruby on Rails and its ecosystem have deployment tools and database migrations to deploy or rollback such features in a live production or staging environment. My question, how is this done for an asp.net (mvc in particular) application? How do you test your newly released features against live data? Do you have any tools to modify the existing database and roll back changes if necessary? Do you make backups before deployment? Update Maybe I should point out that my question is not really clear, getting more answers here will help me phrase the question better. To make it easier I will describe a situation I'm commonly seeing with some of my clients. My clients have large deployments of popular web applications. They do not have staging/QA/testing servers. (yes this is not optimal). The data their apps consist of are images, xml files, user uploads and data in Sql Server. Having a few records, of their production database and a couple of dummy files is not a substitute of testing against real data in my opinion. How would you design a workflow that can create a acceptable environment to mimic a production environment before going live?

• Skip Checkout in Magento for a downloadable product

  Hello Magento boffins. I am using Magento to build an eBooks site. For the release, we plan to have a number of free downloadable books. We were hoping that it would be possible to use the normal Magento 'catalog' functionality to add categories with products underneath. However, since these are free downloadable products, it doesn't really make sense to send users through the checkout when they try to download. Does anyone know of a way to create a free downloadable product which bypasses the checkout altogether? I have noticed that there is a 'free sample' option for downloadable products, but I would prefer not to use this if I can as I plan to use this field for its intended purpose when I add paid products. [EDIT] I have noticed that some of you have voted this question down for 'lack of question clarity'. For clarity, I want: to know if it is possible to create a downloadable product in Magento which doesn't require users to go through the usual checkout process (since it is free) and which is not the 'Free Sample' field of a downloadable product Unfortunately I don't think I can ask this any more eloquently. • should the builder reset its build environment after delivering the product

  I am implementing a builder where in the deliverable is retrieved by calling Builder::getProduct() . The director asks various parts to build Builder::buildPartA() , Builder::buildPartB() etc. in order to completely build the product. My question is, once the product is delivered by the Builder by calling Builder::getProduct(), should it reset its environment (Builder::partA = NULL;, Builder::partB = NULL;) so that it is ready to build another product? (with same or different configuration?) I ask this as I am using PHP wherein the objects are by default passed by reference (nope, I don't want to clone them, as one of their field is a Resource) . However, even if you think from a language agnostic point of view, should the Builder reset its build environment ? If your answer is 'it depends on the case' what use cases would justify reseting the environment (and other way round) ? • How to classify NN/NNP/NNS obtained from POS tagged document as a product feature

  I'm planning to perform sentiment analysis on reviews of product features (collected from Amazon dataset). I have extracted review text from the dataset and performed POS tagging on that. I'm able to extract NN/NNP as well. But my doubt is how do I come to know that extracted words classify as features of the products? I know there are classifiers in nltk but I don't know how I should use it for my project. I'm assuming there are 2 ways of finding whether the extracted word is a product feature or not. One is to compare with a bag of words and find out if my word exists in that. Doubt: How do I create/get bag of words? Second way is to implement some kind of apriori algorithm to find out frequently occurring words as features. I would like to know which method is good and how to go about implementing it. Some pointers to available softwares or code snippets would be helpful! Thanks!

• problem with phpMyAdmin advanced features

  Hi all, I am having trouble putting the final touches on my MySQL/Apache/phpMyAdmin install on a Windows XP system. I am trying to get rid of all the error message in phpMyAdmin and I have gotten rid of all of them except the ones related to "advanced features." The exact error message I have is : The additional features for working with linked tables have been deactivated. To find out why click here. I have read up on the cause of the errors but I must be missing something because I still cannot get the warning to go away. Here is what I have done: Created a linked-tables infrastructure (default name "phpmyadmin") per the phpMyAdmin instructions and enabled "pmadb" in my "config.inc.php" file. Specified (enabled) the table names in my "config.inc.php" file (there are 9 tables total). Created a "controluser" and granted only Select privilages per phpMyAdmin instructions Adjusted "controluser" pma and "controlpass" pmapass in "config.inc.php" file From what I can see these are all the instruction phpMyAdmin gives on this subject, and I am unable to locate any tutorials on the specifics of "advanced features" in phpMyAdmin. Any help would be appreciated, and be gentle, this is my first go with MySQL/phpMyAdmin
