  • Tips for developing with a remote team

    My company has corporate offices around the country and I have been hired under contract to work in one office while the rest of my team works in another. We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? What are the most important priorities? Standard versioning control, e-mail, phone, conference call and IM are all available resources, however Google apps, Skype and the like are not for security reasons.

  • RewriteRule working local but not on remote server

    I have a .htaccess file with one simple RewriteRule: RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)$ ?site=$1 I want to have an url like http://www.example.com/imprint and forward it to http://www.example.com/?site=imprint I checked this rule with an RewriteRule tester which gave me the results I want to achieve. On my local development system it works well too. But on a remote server the URLs just give me a 404 error. Other more simple rewrite rules are working with no problems, so everything must be set up correctly (I think..). The problem is that I don't have access to any error logs or the server configs. So the only thing I can do is to guess... Can anyone tell me if theres something wrong with this rule? Or anything else I can do or test to solve this? Or has someone an idea what could be wrong on the server?

  • x11 Remote Desktop with Ubuntu 12.04

    When I was running Debian, I was able to start a remote session over x11 by just typing gnome-session However, with Ubuntu 12.04, this only seems to result in my desktop and background being forwarded over x11 -- the top bar (where the clock is) and dock are both missing. I tried starting all of unity by executing unity, but that just resulted in a segfault. How can I start a Unity 2D session over x11? Edit: I prefer x11 as I need to tunnel the connection over 2 other servers. I would need to do a good amount of port forwarding within SSH to get any other connections back. Of course, if someone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to listen.

    Hi Frequenlty my work involves to VNC to a remote system and work on it. SInce i run command line apps on this remote system most of the time, i was wondering if there's an alternative software to command prompt which i could install on my local machine. Using this i should be able to create a session with the remote system and from then on all commands issued in command prompt should run in remote system. localHostdir -- should list the directory contents in remotehost active directory localhostapp.exe should run app.exe in remote host and display its contents in localhost command prompt I browsed a little and read about cmdlets in powershell. But it looks like i need to write a cmdlet for each app in the path (dir, mkdir, app.exe in the path). Correct me if am wrong. Once session is established, i simply need the commands invoked in local host to be run in the remote host and return the console output to local host. Please let me know if powershell + cmdlets are the only way THanks

    I just want to know whether it is possible to develop an Android application that will allow remotely controlling an Android phone in the same way that remote desktop, or team viewer allows control over desktop operating systems. Is it possible on an unrooted phone? The basic functionlit required to acompolish this is would be the ability to capture the frame buffer and programmatically invoke touch on the device. Any feedback on this matter would be highly appreciated.

  • Unable to connect with IIS7 Manager to remote site

    I was unable to connect with IIS7 manager to a remote site. I got on the phone with the hosting provider and they started troubleshooting. After a few minutes they went over all my settings, username, password...the whole shebang and I still couldn't. I then asked the support tech if any ports needed to be opened on my side and she said "ONLY PORT 80 NEEDS TO BE OPENED"... after a few more mins I decided to hop over to the IIS7 website but still couldn't find anything incicating specific ports, but I did came across a doc mentioning 8172 as a port IIS7 uses so I went to my firewall did the following OPEN PORT 8172 OUTBOUND That did the trick!...and the support tech updated her document accordingly.

  • Is there a way to add detailed remote crash reporting to a Flex Air application?

    I will be releasing my Air/Flex application soon, but I am pretty sure there are a couple of bugs that may pop up on the various platforms that Air is available for. So I was wondering if there is a way to implement a mechanism, that would send an error report, logging where the error happened, to a remote server each time an app crashes? This way I might catch errors that otherwise would go unnoticed.

I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. I always use Ubuntu and powerpoint with libreoffice impress. I have been looking products on amazon, most of them are either for Windows or MAC. I am not sure whether they will work on Ubuntu. I think that at least some of of you have been using a device for presentations on Ubuntu. It would be great if you share one that will work seamlessly with Ubuntu. Thanks.

    I recently configured an EC2 instance with a Git deployment workflow that resembles Heroku, but I can't seem to figure out how Heroku prevents the Git post-receive hook from outputting 'remote:' on each line.   • How to Access a Windows Desktop From Your Tablet or Phone

    iPads and Android tablets can’t run Windows apps locally, but they can access a Windows desktops remotely — even with a physical keyboard. In a pinch, the same tricks can be used to access a Windows desktop from a smartphone. Microsoft recently launched their own official Remote Desktop app for iOS and Android devices. Microsoft’s official apps are primarily useful for businesses — if you’re a typical home user, you’ll want to use a different remote desktop solution. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop App Microsoft now offers official Remote Desktop apps for iPad and iPhone as well as Android tablets and smartphones. The apps use Microsoft’s RDP protocol to connect to remote Windows systems. They’re essentially just new clients for the Remote Desktop feature that has been included in Windows for more than a decade. There are big problems with these apps if you’re an average home user. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop server is not available on standard or Home versions of Windows, only Professional and Enterprise editions. If you do have the appropriate edition of Windows, you’ll have to set up port-forwarding and a dynamic DNS service if you want to access your Windows desktop from outside your local network. You could also set up a VPN — either way you’ll need to do some footwork. This app is a gift to businesses who are already using Remote Desktop and enthusiasts who have the more expensive versions of Windows and don’t mind the configuration process. To set this up, follow our guide to setting up Remote Desktop for Internet access and connect using the Remote Desktop app instead of traditional Remote Desktop clients. TeamViewer If you have the standard edition of Windows or you just don’t want to mess around with port-forwarding and dynamic DNS configuration, you’ll want to skip Remote Desktop and use something else. We like TeamViewer for this. Just as it’s a great way to remotely troubleshoot your relatives’ computers, it’s also a great way to remotely access your own computer. It doesn’t have the same limitations Microsoft’s Remote Desktop system has — it’s completely free for personal use, runs on any edition of Windows, and is easy to set up. There’s no messing around with port-forwarding or dynamic DNS configuration. To get started, just download and run the TeamViewer program on your computer. You can get started with it immediately, but you’ll want to set up unattended access to connect remotely without using the codes displayed on your screen. To connect, just install the TeamViewer mobile app and log in with the details the TeamViewer window displays. TeamViewer also offers software that runs on Mac and Linux, so you can remote-control other types of computers from your tablet. Other Options Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app and TeamViewer aren’t the only options, of course. There are a variety of different apps and services built for this. Splashtop is another fairly popular remote desktop solution that some people report as being faster. Unfortunately, it’s not entirely free — the iPad and iPhone app costs $20 at regular price. To use it over the Internet, you’ll have to purchase an additional “Anywhere Access Pack.” If you’re frustrated with TeamViewer’s speed and you don’t mind spending money, you may want to try Splashtop instead. As always, you could use any VNC server along with a VNC client app. VNC is the do-it-yourself solution — it’s an open protocol. Unlike Microsoft’s RDP protocol, you can install a VNC server of your own, configure it how you like, and use any mobile VNC client app. This is more flexible because you can install a VNC server on any edition of Windows or even non-Windows operating systems, but it otherwise has all the same issues — you have to worry about port-forwarding, setting up dynamic DNS, and securing your VNC server. Keep an eye on Chrome Remote Desktop. Chrome already offers a built-in remote desktop feature that allows you to remotely control your PC from another Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chrome OS device. Google is rumored to be building an Android app for Chrome Remote Desktop, which would allow you to easily access a computer running Chrome from Android tablets. Google’s solution is much more user-friendly for average people than Microsoft’s Remote Desktop solution, which is clearly geared towards businesses. Chrome Remote Desktop just requires signing in with a Google account. Remote desktop solutions like Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app and TeamViewer are also available for Windows tablets. On Windows RT devices like the Surface RT and Surface 2, they allow you to use the full Windows desktop that’s unavailable on your tablet.

  • Ougoing telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

    I am trying to telnet from Ubuntu server (running Maverick) on ec2 to another machine I have set up not on ec2 - we'll call it "server-x". The two machines are connected via vpn. I can ping from the ec2 machine to server-x no problem. On another machine also on the vpn but also not on ec2 I can telnet to server-x without issue so it is accepting incoming connections on that port. But when I run telnet from the ubuntu instance to server-x I get : ubuntu@ip-10-111-11-11:~$ telnet 5.1.1.1 9143 Trying 5.1.1.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused Other telnets work like this: ubuntu@ip-10-111-11-11:~$ telnet imap.gmail.com 993 Trying 173.194.76.108... Connected to gmail-imap.l.google.com. Escape character is '^]'. I have disabled ufw on the ubuntu machine. Is there anything else that can be blocking this outgoing connection? I tried adding the outgoing port to iptables but I'm not certain I'm doing that right.

The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev.   • Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

    I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging.     Today while uploading file to FTP sever, the codes throw an error - "The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode", after research, I got some knowledge in FTP working principle. FTP may run in active or passive mode, which determines how the data connection is established. Active mode: command connection: client >1024  -> server 21 data connection:    client >1024  <-  server 20 passive mode: command connection: client > 1024 -> server 21 data connection:    client > 1024 <- server > 1024 In active mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the client will use PORT command to tell the server:"hi, I opened port XXXX, please connect to me." and then server will use port 20 to initiate the data connection to that client port number. In passive mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the sever will tell the client:"hi, I opened port XXXX , please connect to me." and then client will initiate the data connection to that sever port number. In a nutshell, active mode is used to have the server connect to the client, and passive mode is used to have the client connect to the server. So if your FTP server is configured to work in active mode only or the firewalls between your client and the server are blocking the data port range, then you will get error message, to fix this issue, just set System.Net.FtpWebRequest property UsePassive = false.   • Remote Access to Owncloud Server

    I'm currently trying to setup my own own-cloud server, and I've got it fully installed, configured, and accessible from within my own local network. I cannot figure out how to access it from the outside. So far I've: Successfully setup port-forwarding on my local router. I've done so via 'single port forwarding' and 'port range forwarding' Ports 80, 443, 3306 (Apache-Full and MySQL) Successfully obtained my external IP address. I've also tested this magic number from within the network at #insertIPhere/owncloud and it did work. Successfully setup the server using SQLite Successfully setup the server using MySQL Created the following exceptions in my firewall: Allow In Port 80 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 443 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 3306 (MySQL) Tried connecting from several different remote networks, as to troubleshoot something on their end As far as trying to access it, I'm doing so through Google-Chrome and Mozilla Firefox trying to reach the server through #insertIPhere/owncloud using the above public IP address. So what have I missed, and how do I access my server from outside? Thanks in advance for your help and time, and I apologize in advance for what will probably result in my noobish mistake in networking. I've looked at the official documentation.     Hi there, can anyone help? I am having a problem stepping into code which is a website hosted on IIS7. Basically i have a test class which calls a WCF service like so ISecurityService service = new SecurityServiceClient(); MembershipUser membershipUser = null; membershipUser = service.GetMembershipUser("Mark"); // THIS LINE FAILS!!! I get the following error but i have everything enabled as far as i know i.e. <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0" /> Here is the error msg, i would appreciated any feedback.. If I don't try and step into the line above then all works ok Microsoft Visual Studio Unable to automatically step into the server. The remote procedure could not be debugged.   • Free internet radio station server software with remote broadcasting?

    I am in the process of creating an internet radio station, but the two djs I have for it are not able to be in one place. I need for them to be able to login to a web based broadcasting session that still has full functionality. They need to be able to broadcast thier live shows with talk and music. The music will be stroed on the server. I have checked out the Broadwave media streaming server from NCH, but ti does not have the ability to login as a dj from a remote computer. I don't have any money for this, so I need it to be free. If this is not possible, I need it to be cheap!

  • Why do we use HTTP and not remote invocations?

    Hey, first of all this is a conceptional question and I do not know if StackOverflow is the appropriate place - so my apologies if I am wrong. Nowadays the web is not only used for passing raw informations. Many and especially complex web applications are in use. These web application seem to be so complex that it seems irrational to use the HTTP protocol, which is based on so simple data exchange, plus it is stateless. Would it not be more convincing to use remote invocations for this web applications? The big advantage to my mind is a unified GUI by using HTML. But there are applications, which have no need for a graphical interfaces and then it comes to a point where the HTTP protocol is really cumbersome.

Now database is growing very fast and server is dying.. now I want to enable the Remote BLOB Storage with Dynamic CRM 4.0. for that I tried to install RBS for testing but everywhere is configure with Sharepoint 2010 not with Dynamic Crm. Does anybody know how to install and configure with Dyanmic CRM 4.0? Does RBS with Standard Edition of SQL Server 2008?
