  Hi, I have a list of rows in an excel sheet which I need to load as historical transactions into a table in my rails applications. I saved the excel file as a csv file. I tried using csv from the standard library but keep getting the following exception CSV::IllegalFormatError. Not sure how to even figure out where the problem lies.   My rails app produces XML when I load /reports/generate_report.xml. On a separate page, I want to read this XML into a variable and save it to the database. How can I do this? Can I somehow stream the response from the /reports/generate_report.xml URI into a variable? Or is there a better way to do it since the XML is produced by the same web app?

• curb not working with rails

  I have a simple class that is using curb to retrieve data. Everything works just find from the command line, but when I load it into my rails application WebBrick crashes on the "require 'curb'" statement. I'm extremely new to ruby so I'm not sure how exactly to debug the error from webbrick to determine what is wrong. If someone knows how to solve this issue that would be great, if someone could also point me into the right direction to start troubleshooting the issue myself that would also help.

  In rails guides it's described like this: "Objects will be in addition destroyed if they’re associated with :dependent = :destroy, and deleted if they’re associated with :dependent = :delete_all." Right, cool. But what's the difference between being destroyed and being deleted? I tried both and it seems to do the same thing.

  Hi All, I am trying to integrate restful_authentication plugings into my rails 3 application. I integrated this in windows, but while trying to integrate it to ubuntu I am facing an error "uninitialized constant OpenSSL::Digest::SHA1" I googled for the solution but still unsuccessful. I am unable to load the file, "require Digest/SHA1" Now, i tried to run console screen. and tried to check the Digest file by putting print statement, this gives false, while in the irb it returns true.   So I have an engine which defines some models and controllers. I want to be able to extend functionality of some models/controllers in my application (eg. adding methods) without loosing the original model/controller functionality from engine. Everywhere I read that you simply need to define controller with the same name in your application and Rails will automatically merge them, however it doesn't work for me and controller in engine is simply ignored (I don't think it's even loaded).

  In my rails 3 model, I have two classes: Product, Service. I want both to be of type InventoryItem because I have another model called Store and Store has_many :InventoryItems This is what I'm trying to get to, but I'm not sure how to model this in my InventoryItem model and my Product and Service models. Should InventoryItem just be a parent class that Product and Service inherit from, or should InventoryItem be modeled as a class abstract of which Product and Service extend from.
