  • Rails 3 full-text search options (gems, plugins, etc)

    I was wondering if there were any suggestions for how to best roll with full text searching in your Rails 3 apps? Thinking Sphinx and acts_as_ferret aren't updated for Rails 3 yet, and even basic activerecord search helpers like Searchlogic also aren't there yet. Any thoughts? Are you using any forked versions of the above gems that have been updated to Rails 3?

  • Nutch search always returns 0 results

    I have set up nutch 1.0 on a cluster. It has been setup and has successfully crawled, I copied the crawl directory using the dfs -copyToLocal and set the value of searcher.dir in the nutch-site.xml file located in the tomcat directory to point to that directory. Still when I try to search I receive 0 results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Every example I see seems to be for recursively getting files in subdirectories uses files only. What I'm trying to do is search a folder for a particular subdirectory named "xxx" then save that path to a variable so I can use it for other things. Is this possible without looping through all the directories and comparing by name?

  • How to program a text search and replace in PDF files

    How would I be able to programmatically search and replace some text in a large number of PDF files? I would like to remove a URL that has been added to a set of files. I have been able to remove the link using javascript under Batch Processing in Adobe Pro, but the link text remains. I have seen recommendations to use text touchup, which works manually, but I don't want to modify 1300 files manually.

  • Best anti boss tricks to hide your private page navigation from your desktop.

    This question is slightly related to programming and it's kinda lame, i know; but i saw many funny things in these years and i'm looking for new tricks from you. I'm talking about methods to fast-hide\camouflage not job related web pages on your desktop when boss arrives like a ghost\ninja behind your shoulders. I know how much can be frustrating, programming hard for ten hours and then been caught by your boss watching XKCD during a 2 minutes break. I think the most common anti boss trick is the evergreen CTRL+TAB, but you have to be fast and your left hand has to be near the keyboard. I saw pitch black brightness on Lcd (how can you pretend to program on that?) or custom sized browser to fit a little space just below the IDE. My favourite one at the moment is using fire gesture plugin with FF; with a micro gesture you can hide FF to your tray in a blink of an eye. Do you have any trick to share?

    I often see developers executing the unplanned code on production server when they actually want to execute on the development server. Developers and DBAs get confused because when they use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) they forget to pay attention to the server they are connecting. It is very easy to fix this problem. Once you have different color for different server in the status bar, it will be easier for developer easily notice the server against which they are about to execute the script.   • SQL SERVER – Right Aligning Numerics in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

    SQL Server Management Studio is my most favorite tool and the comfort it provides to user is sometime very amazing. Recently I was retrieving numeric data in SSMS and I found it is very difficult to read them as they were all right aligned. Please pay attention to following image, you will notice that it is not easier to read the digits as we are used to read the numbers which are right aligned. I immediately thought before I go for any other tricks I should check the query properties. I right clicked on query properties and I found following option. I checked option Right align numeric values and it just worked fine. Do you have any other similar tricks which do you practice often. I prefer to also include column headers in the result set as it gives me proper perspective of which column I have selected. Sometime little tips like this helps a lot in productivity, I encourage you to share your tips. I will publish it with due credit.   • Client-Side V.S. Server-Side Searching?

    I am currently helping to design a web site and application in HTML. We would like the user to be able to search the site/app for desired content via a search bar. We would also like to include an advanced search ability to allow for different search options and more concentrated searches. We are having trouble deciding whether to program the search function on the Client-Side (with JavaScript) or on the Server-Side (with PHP). What are the pros and cons of both and what would you recommend?

    What I'm looking for is to set up a CMS website with a tag cloud/search system where when you click a tag it shows as a search filter, and you get a new tag cloud which only shows tags from the articles that have the primary tag. This should let the user easily include or exclude tags from the search. Also i would like to let the user filter on publication date by using a slider... Check this for an example of how aquabrowser does this (just search for something and play with the tag cloud): http://kidscatalog.columbuslibrary.org It's not perfectly what I want and I don't want to use flash, but I like the concept alot. If something like this does not exist and i might have to code it myself, which cms is most recommended (eg easy to extend, already has tag clouds and search filters,...)

  • How to filter the jqGrid data NOT using the built in search/filter box

    I want users to be able to filter grid data without using the intrinsic search box. I have created two input fields for date (from and to) and now need to tell the grid to adopt this as its filter and then to request new data. Forging a server request for grid data (bypassing the grid) and setting the grid's data to be the response data wont work - because as soon as the user tries to re-order the results or change the page etc. the grid will request new data from the server using a blank filter. I cant seem to find grid API to achieve this - does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

    Hello, Im doing a Java application and Im facing some doubts in which concerns performance. I have a PriorityQueue which guarantees me the element removed is the one with greater priority. That PriorityQueue has instances of class Event (which implements Comparable interface). Each Event is associated with a Entity. The size of that priorityqueue could be huge and very frequently I will have to remove events associated to an entity. Right now Im using an iterator to run all the priorityqueue. However Im finding it heavy and I wonder if there are better alternatives to search and remove events associated with an entity "xpto". Any suggestions? Thanks!
