  • Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

    I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks

    Just upgraded to 14.04 to try to fix some other issues. Now, something has gone wrong with my graphics. I used to have bumblebee but then some website said to remove it and now something's clearly wrong. What's the right way to set things up? Should I try to add bumblebee back?   • How to get Nvidia graphics working on Sony Z laptop?

    I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working?   • Debugging a Visual Studio 2020 extension or addin, always gives me LoaderLock...

    Title says it all. I'm trying to write an extension for VS2010, but I get this every time: Hit F5 to start debugging A new instance of visual studio starts up I can see a bunch of DLLs loading in the debug host while the new instance is starting It then fails with a "LoaderLock". When I continue after that, the new instance is fully functional, but there's no debugging happening at all. The same happens when creating an addin. Any clues?

    Hi all, Question says it all, dividing it into two parts: 1- Grabbing url when chrome extension is clicked, of current tab(on focus) - CHROME SPECIFIC. 2- Setting the same in a Textbox value, in one of frames of web page.Which means, the textbox resides in a.html where on webpage it's <frame src="a.html"> -CHROME/JAVASCRIPT/HTML specific.     Hi guys, I'm creating a On-Screen keyboard for my application, and it supports skins as well. Here's what I'm doing with the skins, I have a folder which contains some images and a xml file which maps the images to the keyboard, I want to be able to have the folder as a zip file like in Office 2007 (.docx) and iPhone firmwares (.ipsw), I know I can simply zip the folder and change the extension, what I need to know is how to read the files in the code.   • How can I run a Perl program when I don't have ssh or shell access?

    I just installed an IRC bot, B****X (Don't ask, I don't know - the real name is not censored). I did all of the configuration and chmod'ed the pl files to 755, but running it won't work. My host does not allow SSH/Shell (which is how the documentation says to runs he script), but just going to the URL usually works because of this. However, I get a 500 (Internal Server Error) error. Basically like this: git clone [email protected]:TheUser/TheProject.git -key "/home/christoffer/ssh_keys/theuser" Or even better (in Ruby): with_key("/home/christoffer/ssh_keys/theuser") do sh("git clone [email protected]:TheUser/TheProject.git") end I have seen examples of connecting to a remote server with Net::SSH that uses a specified private key, but this is a local command.   • Using cp command in linux shell, how do I copy a whole directory into another directory?

    I have a directory, let's say, "work": ~/work/ This directory has some sub-folders (d1, d2...) in it and files in these sub-folders. I want to make a backup copy in the same folder, so it would be like: ~/backup/work/ However, when I use cp -r ./work ./backup the folder "work" is not copied, only its subfoders (so now it's ~/backup/d1 ~/backup/d2...) Any idea how to make it work? I'm quite new to shell, so I'm missing something :)
