• GIT: Checkout to a "Really" Specific Folder

  I want to export, checkout, or whatever you call it from the index, HEAD, or any other commit, to a specific folder, how is that possible? Similar questions have already been asked: GIT: Checkout to a specific folder How to do a "git export" (like "svn export") But the problem with the proposed solution is that they preserve the relative path. So for example, if I use the mentioned method to check out the file nbapp/editblog.php to the folder temp, the file would be checked out in temp/nbapp/editblog.php! Is there anyway to checkout to 'temp' directly? Also, another important thing is to be able to check the HEAD or any other commit. The checkout-index (which allows using the --prefix option to checkout to a specific folder, while normal checkout doesn't allow) checks out only the index. • Image through Script, How to add variable to URL

  I'm sure it's pretty straightforward since someone just solved a similar problem I had. I have a folder full of city images and need users to see the image corresponding to their city. Right now I'm getting the users location without problem using "geoip_city()" but I don't quite know how to integrate it into the URL of the image. All images have the following format: New York.jpg, Boston.jpg so I just need to make the script put the location before .jpg This is what I'm trying now: <img src="blank.png" id="image" > <script type="text/javascript"> document.getElementById('image').src = "Imagenes/grupos/' + geoip_city() + '.jpg"; </script> I believe I'm just messing with the quotes or something similar. • Does Android support near real time push notification

  I recently learned about the ability of iPhone apps to receive nearly instantaneous notifications to apps. This is provided in the form of push notifications, a bespoke protocol which keeps an always on data connection to the iPhone and messages binary packets to the app, which pops up alerts incredibly quickly, between 0.5 - 5 seconds from server app send to phone app response time. This is sent as data - rather than SMS - in very very small packets charged as part of the data plan not as incoming messages. I would like to know if using Android there is either a similar facility, or whether it's possible to implement something close to this using Android APIs. To clarify I define similar as: Not an SMS message, but some data driven solution As real time as is possible Is scalable - ie: as the server part of a mobile app, I could notify thousands of app instances in seconds I appreciate the app could be pull based, HTTP request/response style, but ideally I don't want to to be polling that heavily just to check for notification .. besides which it's like drip draining the data plan.

• Creating a "netbeans property" style dialog box

  Hi I've been trying to create a GUI using netbeans, that includes a dialog similar to Netbean's own "property dialog" that appears when designing. ie. a dialog that contains a table that can be expanded by tree nodes. Something like the dialog on this page, http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-property-editors.html As far as I can understand, the page I linked to describes a custom editor I can set up for use within netbeans while designing - I'm just looking for a way to doing something similar for my actual application I'm writing. Is there an easy way to do this? • Entity Framework associations killing performance

  Here is the performance test i am looking at. I have 8 different entities that are table per type. Some of the entities contain over 100 thousand rows. This particular application does several recursive calculations on the client so I think it may be best to preload the data instead of lazy loading. If there are no associations I can load the entire database in about 3 seconds. As I add associations in any way the performance starts to drastically decline. I am loading all the data the same way (just calling toList() on the entity attached to the context). I ran the test with edmx generated classes and self tracking entities and had similar results. I am sure if I were to try and deal with the associations myself, similar to how I would in a dataset, the performance problem would go away. On the other hand I am pretty sure this is not how the entity framework was intended to being used. Any thoughts or ideas?

  Hello everyone, I am using Silverlight 3.0 + .Net 3.5 + VSTS 2008 + C# to develop a simple video application using MediaElement of Silverlight. I have two videos and I want to play them at the same time (similar to picture in picture effect) -- i.e. a part of the two videos are overlapped when they are playing (the same concept of Z-Order in UI design). I want to play one MediaElement on top of the other MediaElement, and I am wondering how to assign the overlap order (similar to set Z-Order UI element, but I did not find MediaElement has Z-Order property)? thanks in advance, George

• Is there a way to log when a particular memory location gets written and by which function?

  I'm having a bug in my c++ program which happens very rarely but crashes my program. It's seems I have some buffer overflow problem or something similar. I find that these types of bug are most difficult to find. My program always crashes because of the same corrupted memory location. I'm wondering if there is some debugging tool which could detect when a particular memory location get written to and logs the function which does it. I'm using VLD (visual leak detector) for my memory leak hunting and it works great. It substitutes the original mallocs which its own and logs every allocation. I was wondering if there is something similar for memory? I know that something like that would cripple a program, but it could be really helpful.

Till now I have build them for static data only now I want to upgrade them to work for real time data where new data is continuosly sent to client (swf file) from server and it updates the same. I am using Ruby On Rails (RoR) at server side. Is there some thing similar to 'Adbobe live cycle(Java-Flex)' applicable for RoR-Flex architecture that can be used here ? Is there a way to define this kind of thing myself, either in the C# language, or in the IDE? The reason I ask is that there are many similar usages (of the long kind) that would benefit from this, eg. if you're using ReaderWriterLockSlim, you want something pretty similar.

• String Utility Library for Code Generation

  CodeSmith has a nice StringUtils class that can be used to change database object names to singular, plural, camel case, pascal case, etc... Very useful for creating data access layers in their code generation tool. I'm trying to port some CodeSmith templates to the T4 template files used by Visual Studio, and I'm trying to find a similar library to do these things. There must be one somewhere in T4, since that's what is used to produce the LINQ to SQL classes, and it does a nice job of pluralization / singularization. Does anyone know where this library exists, or if a free library with similar functionality exists somewhere? Thanks!

  I am used to developing in PHP/MySQL and have no experience developing with MSSQL. I've skimmed over the PHP MSSQL documentation and it looks similar to MySQLi in some of the methods I read about. For example, with MySQL I utilize the function mysql_real_excape_string(). Is there a similar function with PHP/MSSQL? What steps do I need to take in order to protect against SQL injection with MSSQL? What are the differences between MSSQL and MySQL pertaining to SQL injection prevention?

• R: Creating Custom Shapes with ggplot

  Full Disclosure: This was also posted to the ggplot2 mailing list. (I'll update if I receive a response) I'm a bit lost on this one, I've tried messing around with geom_polygon but successive attempts seem worse than the previous. The image that I'm trying to recreate is this, the colours are unimportant, but the positions are: In addition to creating this, I also need to be able to label each element with text. At this point, I'm not expecting a solution (although that would be ideal) but pointers or similar examples would be immensely helpful. One option that I played with was hacking scale_shape and using 1,1 as coords. But was stuck with being able to add labels. The reason I'm doing this with ggplot, is because I'm generating scorecards on a company by company basis. This is only one plot in a 4 x 10 grid of other plots (using pushViewport) Note: The top tier of the pyramid could also be a rectangle of similar size.

• Synchronising local and remote DB

  Hi everyone, I have a general question about DB synchronisation. So, I'm developing a website locally (PHP + MySQL) and I would like to be able to synchronise at least the structure (and maybe the contents) of the two DB when one of the two is changed (normally I would change the local copy). Right now what I'm doing is to use mysqldump to dump the modified tables and then import them in the remote DB or do it by hand if the changes are minimal. However I find this tedious and error-prone. For the PHP I'm currently using Quanta+ which has the handy feature of finding files that have changed and just upload those. Is there something similar for MySQL? Otherwise how do you keep your DBs synchronised?   Hi Guys I'm creating an online music store application (in Java) for signed and unsigned artist for my client. I'm currently using Struts 1.3.10 (I was recommended Spring but Spring setup is sort of similar to Struts) for my Web application. My Database is currently a MySQL 5 (or higher) and I'm using a DAO pattern to talk to it. There are limitations to using Struts and DAO's (e.g. Multiple File upload in Struts is not implemented the same way as multiple String parameters, and for DAO's, there lacks a Publish-Subscribe feature). Is what I'm doing the best way forward or should I go straight Hibernate (or similar) and move out of Struts? What are the performance implications or technical issues that you've experienced with the same setup I have? The client doesn't care how I do it as long as it is done.

  I'd like to be able to do a code-level diff between two assemblies; the Diff plug-in for Reflector is the closest thing I've found so far, but to compare the entire assembly is a manual process requiring me to drill-down into every namespace/class/method. The other tools I've found so far appear to be limited to API-level (namespaces, classes, methods) differences--which won't cut it for what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of such a tool? My requirements (from highest to lowest) are: Be able to analyze / reflect the code content of two versions of the same assembly and report the differences Accept a folder or group of assemblies as input; quickly compare them (similar to WinMerge's folder diff's) Quick ability to determine if two assemblies are equivalent at the code level (not just the API's) Allow easy drill-down to view the differences Exporting of reports regarding the differences (Personally I like WinMerge for text diffs, so an application with a similar interface would be great)

  I have a problem that seems similar to this fellow - I just want to display the data slightly differently. I'm pretty terrible with SQL so can't modify it to suit, but perhaps someone else can. My table looks similar to this (date format is dd/mm/yyyy): ID User Date_start Role 1 Andy 01/04/2010 A 2 Andy 10/04/2010 B 3 Andy 20/04/2010 A 4 John 02/05/2010 A I want to show the total number of days that anyone was in a certain role. Users stay in the role until there is another entry into the table. Users can only be in one role at a time. • iPhone: scroll view with arbitrary page/"settling" boundaries?

  Hi all, I'm trying to figure out if I can get what I want out of UIScrollView through some trickery or whether I need to roll my own scroll view: I have a series of items in row that I want to scroll through. One item should always be centered in the view, but other items should be visible to either side. In other words, I want normal scrolling and edge bouncing, but I want the deceleration when the user ends a touch to naturally settle at some specified stop point. (Actually now that I think of it, this behavior is similar to coverflow in this respect.) I know UIScrollView doesn't do this out of the box, but does anyone have suggestions for how it might be made to do this, or if anyone's spotted any code that accomplishes something similar (I'm loathe to reimplement all the math for deceleration and edge bounce) Thanks!

• Ramifications of CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls=false

  I recently updated an application from VS2003 to VS2008 and I knew I would be dealing with a host of "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'myControl' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on" I am handling this in what I beleive is the correct way (see code sample below). I am running into numerous controls that are going to need a similar fix. Not wanting to have similar code for every label, textbox etc.. that are being accessed by a non UI thread. What are the ramifications of just setting the CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = false for the entire app? I found a CodeProject article with various workarounds and a warning at the bottom to NOT set the property.   Hi All, I have a config file FOO in /etc/sysconfig/. This Linux file is very similar to INI-File, but without a section declaration. In order to retrieve a value from this file, I used to write a shell script like: source /etc/sysconfig/FOO echo $MY_VALUE Now I want to do the same thing in python. I tried to use ConfigParser, but ConfigParser does not accept such an INI-File similar format, unless it has a section declaration. Is there any way to retrieve value from such a file?

• Difficulties of transforming a Java program to another language (or vice versa)

  Is there anything simple Java can't do that can be done in a similar language or vice versa? Lets say you have a piece of software in language X and you rewrite it entirely to Java (or the other way around), what are the little things that would seriously hamper the translation? At first I was thinking of comprehensions or multiple exit loops, but these are easily rewritten with a for_each loop with an if statement and a local variable respectively. Maybe Exceptions? But which language does not have a similar construct? Polymorphism? But I don't see how I could show that in a few lines. I'm looking for a short and sweet example, that would give some serious headache to work around.
