• Problem connecting to SSH in office network

  I have trouble connecting via SSH to a server whenever I am in the office. I get as far as being prompted for my password and then after that there's a long wait which always ends in a Write failed: Broken pipe This is only for connecting via SSH. I use svn to commit files to a repository hosted on the same server and there are no hitches. Furthermore, this only happens in our office. When I go the university or whenever I am at home or at the coffee shop I am able to connect seamlessly. There are no firewalls in our office. It's just a basic wireless router connected to a modem setup. It's the same setup I have at home and I guess the same setup in the coffee shop. What are the causes for a broken pipe and why does this phenomenon only happen when I try connect via SSH and not when I work with svn on the same server? I didn't do anything but that's because there is no one in the office but me! Having said that, is it possible that it has something to do with the number of sessions an SSH server can handle? UPDATE 2011-14-07: I try to login via SSH through Putty on another machine running windows together with my current SSH session in Ubuntu and now it seems my SSH session in Ubuntu has been dropped. I can't type into the terminal. Is Putty the culprit now?

On Seven, I see no progress bar and the monitor turn off at once while the OS saves the ram on the disk. Same thing during the wake up process after the hibernation. Is it possible to have the progress bar for hibernation and following wake up on Seven?

After a certain amount of time the TCP server sends a keepalive, and determines that the client is alive. What does the TCP server then do with this first datagram? Does is wait for the second datagram to arrive, or does it discard the first datagram?

Of course slow server-side code is tying up Apache requests for far too long, but I need it to wait, until my debugging comes to end. How can I solve this problem.

  Hi, as titles says, how is sector id on HDD,CD-ROM and so distinguishable from data? I mean, when I want lets say sector #52, first, head goes to track where this sector should be, than it must wait some time to spin the desired sector above the reading head. But it must somehow recognize that its sector number, and not only data that say 52. So, how is this done? Thanks.

  Ever since FireFox 4, page tabs have been moved to the top of the window. This gets pretty irritating when surfing the net through a remote desktop session. Often when I want to switch tabs, if I accidentally move my mouse a little to much to the top, I get the remote desktop connection bar blocking the tabs instead, then I'd have to wait a few frustrating seconds before it disappears again. So, are there any methods to shrink or shorten the remote desktop connection bar or delay the appearance of it?

My client uses custom software that uses (wait for it) Microsoft Excel to store data as opposed a RDBMS.   I'm using HylaFax on one of my server to send facsimile to different devices which works pretty well except for one device. I'm not sure, but the problem might be, that the remote device takes to long to pick up and response to the call. I tested it by calling the fax number with my phone and it took 30 seconds till the remote side picked up. So is there a way to tell HylaFax how long it should wait for the remote device to answer?

  I've got a Windows 2003 Active Directory infrastructure, and there are times (such as when terminating an employee) that I want instantaneous propagation across both of my AD servers. Currently, I make the change in both places, which I suspect is unhealthy, but it's the only way I know to make sure that the account is disabled to every machine. Is there a better way? Do I have to wait for the normal propagation time for convergence, or is there a way to "force" it?

• ssh sessions in xterms freeze for many minutes whenever they disconnect

  If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so. There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

• long access times and errors in iis application

  Hi, I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. • Windows 8 screen goes black after a minute

  My laptop screen goes black after about a minute of inactivity. I've already tried setting the Screen Saver to anything other than Blank and increasing the Wait but it still keeps happening. Also checked my Power Options, the plan I currently have is set to turn the screen off only after an hour. If I move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard the screen wakes up. Any other ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

How can I get these backup processes to stop so they release resources? Simply killing the processes doesn't work. The process will stay in KILL/ROLL for a long time. • How do I transfer a Windows 7 installation to a new HDD?

• Vista stuck at "Shutting down..." screen. Any way to get verbose logging?

  Hi all, My home machine has been running fine for about 3 years, no problems at all. Within the last couple of weeks it's had real trouble trying to shut down. It'll get so far and then just sit there at the "Shutting down..." screen for hours. I've left it overnight, I've tried in safe mode, all to no avail. These days, I just wait for the disk activity to finish up and then hold the power button to turn it off. Feels dirty as, especially because there's a RAID involved! The hardware itself is in pretty good shape and of decent spec; Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, 1TB RAID 1+0, so it's not quite like a 7 year old PC coming to end of life! In the last month, hardware hasn't changed except for a new monitor. Admittedly I haven't tried unplugging the monitor but I've never heard of that preventing a shutdown. I might give it a whirl later I guess, as a last resort. I've uninstalled old apps, done updates, checked the event log, looked in device manager, uninstalled all non-present devices, disabled various non-critical devices (imaging, audio etc), unplugged peripherals, stopped non-essential services, unplugged the network, disabled the network adapter entirely, ran chkdsk, verified my RAID, the list goes on. But not a single lead. I'm pretty stumped. It could be hardware, but I have no other evidence to suggest so; when the PC is running, it runs fine. Temperatures are good, gaming is smooth as always, disk performance is fine. Event log even makes it look like the shutdown was completed (gets to the point where the event log service stops). In fact, the PC doesn't appear to realise that I cut the power to it. So my question is, does anyone know if there is a way I can get some verbose output (or a log) from shutdown to give me some idea of what is causing the issue? I'm guessing it's stuck unloading some app/driver but it would be good to get some specifics! Unless anyone has any other ideas? I suspect a reinstall would resolve the issue, however I'm looking to get a new PC built in the next month or so, and the reinstall is going to be quite a big job so I'd rather just wait until then if it comes to that. Would still be nice to get this sorted in the mean time though. Cheers!

  Is it possible to show my subscribed calendars on Gmail in the Windows 8 calendar app like I'm used to do on my Windows Phone? I think - but am not sure about that - that it uses the mobile API. When I try to configure it via http://m.google.com/sync on my Windows Phone I can see the client "WindowsMail" but cannot add or configure shared calendars as for my smartphone. Is there currently a possibility to achieve this or do we need to wait until they get that enabled for us?

I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too.
