I am often working in a process in the Terminal and I've set some variables and used cd and so forth. Then I'd like to open another Terminal window from there. Is there any way to do this?
on windows there are several key maps applications that replaces Caps lock with ESC on a single 'press and relase' and with a Control signal if hold and another key is pressed.
Is there any way to do something similar on linux? Ideally on the whole system, but if it is only for X window it is fine too.
i'm currently writting scripts with the xautomation package tools. but i guess there is already a better way to do that via configurations.

I want to show all the results in one window.
I have tried using Reveal Find Items, but it opens up the directory of which each file is in, not exactly ideal.
In XP, to ensure a folder opened in a new window, I held down CTRL when I opened (by mouse or keyboard) the folder.
This action is so ingrained to me, I pretty much don't even realise I'm doing it at a conscious level.
Unfortunately, this action apparently hasn't made it to Vista. Is there a new way to do this, or am I just missing something obvious?
After the latest update (beginning of Dec. 2012) on Snow Leopard my login window language has changed. My system is set to be in english but the login windows now is in french.
Currently I am in France so I suspect that during the update something has revealed my location and installed something in the locale of the current location.
It doesn't seem fair to me, I want to switch it back to english but I couldn't find a way to do it.
The new emacs23 gives me
("Window width 0 too small (after splitting)"))
whenever I load ECB or tabbar. Seems to be introduces after updating from Kubuntu intrepid to jaunty. Any hint how to solve this?
How to change the window title of private browsing option in Firefox? When I use the private browsing option it shows up in the title as Private Browsing, is there a mechanism to prevent not showing that information, but still be in private browsing mode.

On Windows I use an AutoHotKey script to tile the active window to the left half of the screen, the right half, or a few other options.
Does Ubuntu/Gnome have a program that would allow me to do that?
If not, do you have an idea how to create this programmatically, or at least can point me to a resource?
My SimFinger window is in the top left of my screen and I can't move it. How can I move it so I can see the top of the iPhone?

On my old computer when you drag a window around, it seems to be cut up (like what you'd see in remote desktop on a slow connection) and its becoming really annoying.
A few weeks when I was transferring data from it to my new laptop and it was working fine then however when I started it a few minutes ago this issue occurred.
I tried restarting several time with no luck.

Hi! I was wandering if it's possible to run an Ubuntu virtual machine using VirtualBox in background, I mean, without any window open.
The idea is to conect via SSH to the linux host, that would be running in background.
Have you ever done somenthing like this? Is it possible?
Thanks!

I need to write a batch program to end all MS office communicator tasks with window titles (usually ending with pattern "- Conversation" .
I tried
taskkill /FI "WINDOWTITLE eq *Conversation" /IM communicator.exe
but the wildcard pattern starting with a '*' does not seem to work. Gives the folowing error
ERROR: The search filter cannot be recognized.
any suggestions for a workaround would be greatly appreciated!
In the Excel VBE, the Find Dialog box (CTRL-F) pops up half off screen at the bottom of screen. How do I control the Find window so it positions itself higher up on the screen ?

The problem is, both Firefox and Internet Explorer have "Open in New Tab" as the second option.
This has become muscle memory for me by now, to the point that I don't use as often as I want to, solely because I can't open a page in a new tab without thinking about it.
Is there a way to switch the position of "Open Link in new tab" and "Open link in new window", so that I can resume browsing as normal, or am I cursed by this user interface design nightmare by Google?
Does anyone know how to open a document in a new window instead of a new tab in Lotus Symphony? I would like to compare two spreadsheets and can not figure out a way to display them side by side. I am using v1.3.0 on a Mac. Thanks!
Let's say you open two files through a vertical split..
vim -O 1 2
Now how would I split this window horizontally across both of the vertical windows? So this is what a :vsplit looks like:

I want the end result to look like

Hello
I am using ubuntu 10.04. Yesterday i shut down my system in a proper working state. And this morning when i started my system i got this problem.
When i minimize any window it doesnt show in the bottom panel. for switching i have to use alt+tab key
Whenever I start up my laptop with Xubuntu on it, a Terminal window opens and just sits in the taskbar - as though I opened it myself.
Anyone know if there's some sort of list of applications which open at boot time. Maybe Terminal got on that list somehow?
