• The Evolution Of C#

  The first release of C# (C# 1.0) was all about building a new language for managed code that appealed, mostly, to C++ and Java programmers. The second release (C# 2.0) was mostly about adding what wasn’t time to built into the 1.0 release. The main feature for this release was Generics. The third release (C# 3.0) was all about reducing the impedance mismatch between general purpose programming languages and databases. To achieve this goal, several functional programming features were added to the language and LINQ was born. Going forward, new trends are showing up in the industry and modern programming languages need to be more: Declarative With imperative languages, although having the eye on the what, programs need to focus on the how. This leads to over specification of the solution to the problem in hand, making next to impossible to the execution engine to be smart about the execution of the program and optimize it to run it more efficiently (given the hardware available, for example). Declarative languages, on the other hand, focus only on the what and leave the how to the execution engine. LINQ made C# more declarative by using higher level constructs like orderby and group by that give the execution engine a much better chance of optimizing the execution (by parallelizing it, for example). Concurrent Concurrency is hard and needs to be thought about and it’s very hard to shoehorn it into a programming language. Parallel.For (from the parallel extensions) looks like a parallel for because enough expressiveness has been built into C# 3.0 to allow this without having to commit to specific language syntax. Dynamic There was been lots of debate on which ones are the better programming languages: static or dynamic. The fact is that both have good qualities and users of both types of languages want to have it all. All these trends require a paradigm switch. C# is, in many ways, already a multi-paradigm language. It’s still very object oriented (class oriented as some might say) but it can be argued that C# 3.0 has become a functional programming language because it has all the cornerstones of what a functional programming language needs. Moving forward, will have even more. Besides the influence of these trends, there was a decision of co-evolution of the C# and Visual Basic programming languages. Since its inception, there was been some effort to position C# and Visual Basic against each other and to try to explain what should be done with each language or what kind of programmers use one or the other. Each language should be chosen based on the past experience and familiarity of the developer/team/project/company and not by particular features. In the past, every time a feature was added to one language, the users of the other wanted that feature too. Going forward, when a feature is added to one language, the other will work hard to add the same feature. This doesn’t mean that XML literals will be added to C# (because almost the same can be achieved with LINQ To XML), but Visual Basic will have auto-implemented properties. Most of these features require or are built on top of features of the .NET Framework and, the focus for C# 4.0 was on dynamic programming. Not just dynamic types but being able to talk with anything that isn’t a .NET class. Also introduced in C# 4.0 is co-variance and contra-variance for generic interfaces and delegates. • How to cluster two IIS servers for failover?

  We have IIS servers running in 2 machines hosting few webservices which provided some integration services to an old document Mgmt system, word/excel related service, etc.... We need to cluster/load balance these 2 IIS in order to achieve a fail-over. i.e If one of the IIS server is down, the other on should be able to handle the request. The reverse proxy used in the DMZ is also IIS 7.5 Our overall business application is in fact a J2EE one and we have successfully deployed on a weblogic cluster installed on the same two machines and load balance from the same above mentioned IIS reverse proxy at DMZ. But we do not know how to achieve this in case of IIS.

• /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

• Revocation status of DC can't be verified

  A Domain Controller within my forest was working fine (as the story usually goes). Then, suddenly, I can't logon with my smart card. Instead, I'm greeted with the following message: The system could not log you on. The revocation status of the domain controller certificate used for smart card authentication could not be determined. I literally have no idea what's happened here. As an attempted quick fix, I removed the root certificate which issued the Smart Card's certificate from the CA of both the client and DC. Then imported a newly exported one from the DC in question. Same issue. I've spotted a number of related articles on Microsoft's forums and a HP support document. Each don't really shed much light as it's a generic error message apparently. Having said all of this, other smart cards (issued from other DCs) work fine. So I have no idea what's up with this one.

• Repeated Reporting Services Login issue when deploying through BIDS to a remote server

  We are having a problem deploying a reporting services report to a sql reporting services computer that is configured in SharePoint Integrated mode. I can successfully deploy to the SharePoint document libraries set up for reports and data connections if I do it locally from the box that SharePoint and Reporting Services are deployed on. If I try and do the same thing with the exact same deployment properties from a remote box, I constantly get a Reporting Services Login dialog popping up and no combination of domain\username and password will work. I've even tried the machines local admin account and still nothing. Any ideas where to start looking?

• Why Cornell University Chose Oracle Data Masking

  One of the eight Ivy League schools, Cornell University found itself in the unfortunate position of having to inform over 45,000 University community members that their personal information had been breached when a laptop was stolen. To ensure this wouldn’t happen again, Cornell took steps to ensure that data used for non-production purposes is de-identified with Oracle Data Masking. A recent podcast highlights why organizations like Cornell are choosing Oracle Data Masking to irreversibly de-identify production data for use in non-production environments. Organizations often copy production data, that contains sensitive information, into non-production environments so they can test applications and systems using “real world” information. Data in non-production has increasingly become a target of cyber criminals and can be lost or stolen due to weak security controls and unmonitored access. Similar to production environments, data breaches in non-production environments can cost millions of dollars to remediate and cause irreparable harm to reputation and brand. Cornell’s applications and databases help carry out the administrative and academic mission of the university. They are running Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions that include highly sensitive faculty, student, alumni, and prospective student data. This data is supported and accessed by a diverse set of developers and functional staff distributed across the university. Several years ago, Cornell experienced a data breach when an employee’s laptop was stolen.  Centrally stored backup information indicated there was sensitive data on the laptop. With no way of knowing what the criminal intended, the university had to spend significant resources reviewing data, setting up service centers to handle constituent concerns, and provide free credit checks and identity theft protection services—all of which cost money and took time away from other projects. To avoid this issue in the future Cornell came up with several options; one of which was to sanitize the testing and training environments. “The project management team was brought in and they developed a project plan and implementation schedule; part of which was to evaluate competing products in the market-space and figure out which one would work best for us.  In the end we chose Oracle’s solution based on its architecture and its functionality.” – Tony Damiani, Database Administration and Business Intelligence, Cornell University The key goals of the project were to mask the elements that were identifiable as sensitive in a consistent and efficient manner, but still support all the previous activities in the non-production environments. Tony concludes,  “What we saw was a very minimal impact on performance. The masking process added an additional three hours to our refresh window, but it was well worth that time to secure the environment and remove the sensitive data. I think some other key points you can keep in mind here is that there was zero impact on the production environment. Oracle Data Masking works in non-production environments only. • When Do OS Questions Belong on Hardware Service Requests?

  Untitled Document My Oracle Support—Logging an Operating System Service Request One of the concerns we hear from our customers with Premier Support for Systems is that they have difficulty logging a Service Request (SR) for an operating system issue. Because Premier Support for Systems includes support for the hardware and the associated operating system, you log any operating system issues through a hardware Service Request. To create a hardware Service Request, you enter the information into the Hardware tab of the Create Service Request screen, but to ensure that the hardware Service Request you enter is recognized and routed appropriately for an operating system issue, you need to change the product from your specific hardware to the operating system that the hardware is running. The example below shows you how to create a Service Request for the operating system when the support level is Premier Support for Systems. The key to success is remembering that the operating system coverage is part of the hardware support. To begin, from anywhere within My Oracle Support, click on the Create SR button as you would to log any SR: Enter your Problem Summary and the Problem Description Next, click on the Hardware tab. Enter the System Serial Number (in this case “12345”) and click on Validate Serial Number: Notice that the product name for the hardware indicates “Sunfire T2000 Server” with an option for a drop down List of Values. Click on the product drop down and choose the correct operating system from the list. In this case I have chosen “OpenSolaris Operating System” Next, you will need to enter the correct operating system version: At this point, you may proceed to complete and submit the Service Request. If your company has Premier Support for Systems, just remember that your operating system has coverage under the hardware it runs on, so start with a Hardware tab on the Service Request screen and change the product related information to reflect the operating system you need help with. Following these simple steps will ensure that the system assigns your Service Request to the right support team for an operating system issue and the support engineer can quickly begin working your issue.

• Virus that duplicates word documents as exe

  Hi, We are facing a virus problem on our network, but I'm unable to identify it, so we can't properly deal with it. The symptoms are that the virus duplicates a word document (.doc) generating a new archive with the same name, but with an exe extension, and, after that, the virus hides the original file. So, when the user clicks over the file, it propagates itself. Symantec AV seems to be able to block it: every time that the virus tries to generate the exe, symantec blocks it, but at this point, the original file was already converted to hidden, so the user thinks that the file has been deleted. Symantec identifies it as a simple trojan horse. I already started a full scan, but it didn't found nothing. I'm trying to know the virus name in order to fight it. Does anyone has any kind of information? TIA, Bob

• Returning row values based on conditional formatting variables

  I'm not entirely sure how to properly explain this, but here we go... I'm trying to create a single budgeting document that allows me to manage purchasing and reconciliation for multiple projects. I would like to create separate sheets per project and have purchased items populate on a master sheet. Using conditional formatting, I've set one of the columns to display an item's status (waiting for approval, approved, ordered, received). I would like the contents of an entire row to populate in a new sheet table once the status is set to "Received." The sheet should update descendingly. I can't attach an image because I don't have a 10 reputation.. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Oracle Retail Analytics 13.3 release introduced significant new functionality with its new Customer Analytics module. The Customer Analytics module enables you to perform retail analysis of customers and customer segments. Market basket analysis (part of the Customer Analytics module) provides insight into which products have strong affinity with one another. Customer behavior information is obtained from mining sales transaction history, and it is correlated with customer segment attributes to inform promotion strategies. The ability to understand market basket affinities allows marketers to calculate, monitor, and build promotion strategies based on critical metrics such as customer profitability. Highlighted End User Documentation Updates With the addition of Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, the documentation set addresses both modules under the single umbrella name of Oracle Retail Analytics. Note, however, that the modules, Oracle Retail Merchandising Analytics and Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, are licensed separately. To accommodate new functionality, the Retail Analytics suite of documentation has been updated in the following areas, among others: The User Guide has been updated with an overview of Customer Analytics. • How to structure a XML-based order form using ASP.NET

  First question here; please help me if I'm doing something wrong. I'm a graphic designer who's trying to teach himself ASP.NET/C#. My server-side background is PHP/WordPress and some ASP Classic, and when I do code I've hand-coded just about everything since I started learning HTML. So, as I've started to learn .NET, my code has been very manual and procedural. I'm now trying to create a really basic order form that pulls from an XML file to populate the form; there's an image, a title, a price, and selectable quantities. If I was making this form as a static HTML file, I'd have each field named manually and so on postback I could query each field to get the values. But I'm trying to do this dynamically so that I can add/remove items from the form and not have to change the code. In terms of displaying the XML, I rolled my own by loading XmlDocument and using XmlNodeList and a bunch of foreach loops to get things displayed. Then, I learned about <asp:XmlDataSource> and <asp:Repeater>, which made displaying the XML simpler by a large margin. However, I've had a really hard time getting the data that's been submitted on postback (it was implied on SO that there are better ways to get data than nested RepeaterItems). So, what I've learned so far is that you can do things a bunch of different ways in .NET. that's why I thought it'd be good to ask for answers regarding the best way to use ASP.NET to display a XML document and dynamically capture the data that's submitted. Any help is appreciated! I'm using Notepad++ to code .NET 2.0.

• Why is the XML DTD not found by the browser

  When I load my XML file in a browser, it complains there is 'no style information': "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." So I wrote an external DTD, then an internal DTD, but keep getting the same 'no style information' error. It doesn't even show the DTD! • How Can I Install LibreOffice Base?

  Useful info: I have tried running sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get install -f with no result. I am running Kubuntu 11.10 (the updater is far too unreliable to ever be trusted with performing a version upgrade) The rest of LibreOffice seems to work fine (apart from an annoying bug where tooltips are shown as black text on black background...) I have need to use LibreOffice Base to complete a mail merge document. However, I noticed it's not installed. When I go to install it however... rob@hydrogen:~$ sudo apt-get install libreoffice-base [sudo] password for rob: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • Watchguard firebox: public IP addresses behind firewall with as much usable IP addresses as possible

  Our ISP assigned us 16 public IP addresses that we want to assign to hosts behind a Watchguard firebox x750e. The IP addresses are: x.x.x.176/28 of which x.x.x.177 is the gateway. The hosts will be running software that needs to be directly assigned the public IP address so 1:1 NAT is not an option. I found this document that gives examples on how to assign public IP addresses to hosts behind the firewall, using an optional interface: http://www.watchguard.com/help/configuration-examples/public_IP_behind_XTM_configuration_example_(en-US).pdf However, I can't implement scenario 1 as it won't allow me to use the same subnet on both interfaces. As for scenario 2, splitting the address range into 2 subnets will decrease the usable hosts on the optional interface to 5 (8 - network - broadcast - optional interface ip). I'm convinced that there must be a better way to address this problem and maximize the number of usable IP addresses but I'm not very familiar with this specific firewall. Are there any suggestions on how to keep the hosts behind the firewall with public IP addresses while maximizing the usable IP addresses? thanks

• PhpMyAdmin::403 error - don't have permission to enter localhost/phpmyadmin/ on Apache2, Fedora 13

  I am running an apache 2.17 at a Fedora 13. I did install phpmyadmin from the repos (via yum). It is installed in /usr/share/phpMyAdmin. I did make a symlink from my document root to the /user/share/phpMyadmin. I set 755 permsissions on that folder, set it to be owned by user apache and group apache. And yet, when I try to open http://localhost/phpmyadmin, it gives me the 403 error - you do not have permisssion! I tried also commenting some deny lines in the phpMyAdmin.conf file, no success. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

  I have ASP.NET web application using MSSQL express at the moment. But I want to use MSSQL 2008. But I'm NOT sure about what kind of license I should buy. I'm considering the Processor License according to this document. I'm not sure if it's the right choice. If I buy User CAL. should I buy only 1 CAL for my web application? or for all visitors who visit my web site? I also have a Windows desktop application that write/read data from the server. Do I need a seperate license with for this Windows application if I buy Processor License. Thank you for suggestion.

• Why Standards Only Get You So Far

  Over the years I have been exposed to a number of standards.  EDI was the first.  More recently it has been the CIECA standard for Insurance and now the embattled document standards of Open XML and ODF. Standards actually came up at the last CAG meeting.  The debate was over how effective they really are.  Even back in the late 80’s to early 90’s people found they had to customize these standards to get any work done.  I even had one vendor about a year ago tell me that they really weren’t standards, they were more of a guideline. The problem is that standards are created either by committee or by companies trying to sell a product.  They never fit all situations.  This is why most of them leave extension points in their definition.  Of course if you use those extension points everyone has to have custom code to know how to consume the new product. Standards increase reliability but they stifle innovation and slow the time to market cycle of products.  In this age of ever shortening windows of opportunity that could mean that a company could lose its competitive advantage. I believe that standards are not only good, but essential.  I also believe that they are not a silver bullet.  People who turn competing standards into a type of holy war are really missing the point.  I think we should make the best standards we can, whether that is for a product so that customers can use API, or by committee so that they cross products.  But they also need to be as feature rich and flexible as possible.  They can’t be just the lowest common denominator since this type of standard will be broken the day it is published.  In the end though, it is the market will vote with their dollars. del.icio.us Tags: Office Open XML,ODF,Standards,EDI

  i've set the documentroot in httpd.conf as: DocumentRoot "C:\Users\user1\Documents\WebProjects" if the files are located in WebProjects, they work; however if i create a sub folder [project] in WebProjects and access them via the browser, it doesn't load. for example, if i create a folder 'test' in WebProjects and a php file called test.php and call it: localhost/test/test.php . .this won't work and give the error of file not found on server. but if i put all the files in WebProjects itself, ie. test.php in WebProjects, it will work [localhost/test.php]. this makes my WebProjects folder look very cluttered with different files of different projects strewn around. and it isn't practical either. i'm new to using apache and hence would like to know how to set the document root such that i can access and load all the Projects/folders in WebProjects.
