  • How can I launch an application as Administrator after a WiX MSI has completed?

    Hi there I want to launch an application with admin rights after I have completed an installation using a WiX based MSI. I can launch the application just fine, on XP but with Windows 7, it's an issue. The application has a manifest embedded in it that says it should run as administrator and I've changed the impersonate attribute in the Custom Action to "no". I can't change the execute attribute to deferred, as this only works before the InstallFinalize action and I need it after the user has clicked Finish in the MSI. This is my Custom Action: <CustomAction Id="LaunchApp" FileKey="App" ExeCommand="[Command Line Args]" Execute="immediate" Impersonate="no" Return="asyncNoWait" /> Any help on this would be appreciated.   • Using Windows Previous Versions to access ZFS Snapshots (July 14, 2009)

    The Previous Versions tab on the Windows desktop provides a straightforward, intuitive way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  ZFS snapshots are read-only, point-in-time instances of a ZFS dataset, based on the same copy-on-write transactional model used throughout ZFS.  ZFS snapshots can be used to recover deleted files or previous versions of files and they are space efficient because unchanged data is shared between the file system and its snapshots.  Snapshots are available locally via the .zfs/snapshot directory and remotely via Previous Versions on the Windows desktop. Shadow Copies for Shared Folders was introduced with Windows Server 2003 but subsequently renamed to Previous Versions with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  Windows shadow copies, or snapshots, are based on the Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) and, as the [Shared Folders part of the] name implies, are accessible to clients via SMB shares, which is good news when using the Solaris CIFS Service.  And the nice thing is that no additional configuration is required - it "just works". On Windows clients, snapshots are accessible via the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer using the Shadow Copy client, which is available by default on Windows XP SP2 and later.  For Windows 2000 and pre-SP2 Windows XP, the client software is available for download from Microsoft: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Client. Assuming that we already have a shared ZFS dataset, we can create ZFS snapshots and view them from a Windows client. zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap101zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap102 To view the snapshots on Windows, map the dataset on the client then right click on a folder or file and select Previous Versions.  Note that Windows will only display previous versions of objects that differ from the originals.  So you may have to modify files after creating a snapshot in order to see previous versions of those files. The screenshot above shows various snapshots in the Previous Versions window, created at different times.  On the left panel, the .zfs folder is visible, illustrating that this is a ZFS share.  The .zfs setting can be toggled as desired, it makes no difference when using previous versions.  To make the .zfs folder visible: zfs set snapdir=visible tank/home/administrator To hide the .zfs folder: zfs set snapdir=hidden tank/home/administrator The following screenshot shows the Previous Versions panel when a file has been selected.  In this case the user is prompted to view, copy or restore the file from one of the available snapshots. As can be seen from the screenshots above, the Previous Versions window doesn't display snapshot names: snapshots are listed by snapshot creation time, sorted in time order from most recent to oldest.  There's nothing we can do about this, it's the way that the interface works.  Perhaps one point of note, to avoid confusion, is that the ZFS snapshot creation time isnot the same as the root directory creation timestamp. In conclusion, Shadow Copies for Shared Folders provides a straightforward way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  The Windows desktop provides an easy to use, intuitive GUI and no configuration is required to use or access previous versions of files or folders.     I'm writing application using quickly Pygtk and glade. this application should have database connection (such as MySQL) for reading and writing data from the local or outsourcing machine \ server. However, in my machine there is MySQL installed, but when releasing the app it sould be installed on another ubuntu machine, which may not have mysql and moreover not the same database with the required database name and structure.... So my questions are: Is it a good choice using mysql as database 1.2 If not what is? Is it posible to embeding mysql or other database program during the installation from ubuntu software center? 2.2 If it's posible: hwo(any tutorial?) Where to store secure data outside the mysql (or whatever) for conecting the database every time a user launch the application

  • Should I put actors in the Domain-Model/Class-Diagram?

    When designing both the domain-model and class-diagrams I am having some trouble understanding what to put in them. I'll give an example of what I mean: I am doing a vacations scheduler program, that has an Administrator and End-Users. The Administrator does a couple of things like registering End-Users in the program, changing their previleges, etc. The End-User can choose his vacations days, etc. I initially defined an Administrator and End-User as concepts in the domain-model, and later as classes in the class-diagram. In the class-diagram, both classes ended up having a couple of methods like Administrator.RegisterNewUser(); Administrator.UnregisterUser(int id); etc. Only after some time I realised that actually both Administrator and End-User are actors, and maybe I got this design totally wrong. Instead of filling Administrator and End-User classes with methods to do what my Use-Cases request, I could define other classes from the domain to do them, and have controllers handle the Use-Cases(actually, I decided to do one for each Use-Case). I could have a UserDatabase.RegisterNewUser() and UserDatabase.UnregisterUser(int id);, for example, instead of having those methods on the Administrator class. The idea would be to try to think of the whole vacation-scheduler as a "closed-program" that has a set of features and doesn't bother with things such as authentication, that should be internal/protected, being that the only public things I'd let the outside world see would be its controllers. Is this the right approach? Or am I getting this totally wrong? Is it generally bad idea to put Actors in the domain-model/class-diagrams? What are good rules of thumb for this? My lecturer is following Applying UML and Patterns, which I find awful, so I'd like to know where I could look up more info on this described actor-models situation. I'm still a bit confused about all of this, as this new approach is radically different from anything I've done before.

  • Postfix not sending/allowing receiving of messages after server (hardware) changed

    We had na old notebook runing Ubuntu 12.04 working as a web/ftp/mail server and it worked but since the notebook was a notebook and pretty old and unreliable, a desktop was bought to replace it before it stopped working all together. Due to issues with the new desktop's vídeo card, we couldn't use Ubuntu 12.04 so we installed Ubuntu 13.10 and wen't about configuring it. Since we removed the notebook from the network, we kept the same Computer Name and local IP address to make things as close to the old server as possible configuration-wise. However, something has gone wrong since Postfix is throwing error 451 4.3.0 lookup faillure on every attempt to send a mail, and no email can be received either. EDIT: Here are some issues MXToolBox reports to my domain, answering hopefully to @Teun Vink: BlackList Mail Server Web Server DNS Error 4 0 2 0 Warnings 0 0 0 3 Passed 0 6 3 12 So the domain is on some blacklist, but that doesn't explain the error at all No mail server issues found (except it's not working) Those two web server errors it's because i don't have HTTPS workin (No SSL Certificate) so the test fails Those 3 DNS warnings we're already there when it was working with the other machine and are related to stuff i can't control: SOA Refresh Value is outside of the recommended range SOA Expire Value out of recommended range SOA NXDOMAIN Value too high I've searched and as far as i can tell only the guys who sold the retail can change those values and they won't. Edit2: I half solved the issue.on the new machine postfix was installed but postfix-mysql waasn't so he couldn't connect to the database (rookie mistake). After fixing that, i can now send mails to the outsider without any issues, however i am still not able to receive mails from utside.     I can not enable my Windows SmartScreen on Windows 8.1 My PC is not joined to any domain. I'm not talking about SmartScreen feature available in IE but the feature that is available in File Explorer. Control Panel Action Center Change Windows SmartScreen settings I searched in group policy but couldn't find anything that is preventing me from enabling it. Update 1: My user is a member of administrators group. Other things work fine. When I try to change something that needs administrative permission, UAC window appears, but nothing here.

    I checked event log today and between mass of failed audit events I found some successes which originated from not my country. However they look a little weird and no process is specified, while when I logon using RDP it says winlogon.exe I am wondering whether that means my system was compromised or there are good variants and it doesnt mean its all that bad. I am using a VPS solution if thats useful.

    I've recently lost my job, and I'm working towards changing vocations. My degrees are in Mathematics, but I'm interested in IT, particularly working as a DBA or a programmer. I don't have IT experience, but I have the resourses to be patient with the transition, and I'm currently learning SQL and Java. Obviously, I need some job experience. My question is this: What entry-level jobs might allow me to gain useful experience towards obtaining a DBA job? It seems to me that programmers often start as testers, and system administrators could start at a help-desk position, but it is unclear how one begins to work with a company's database.

  • IIS 7.5 website application pool with full administrator permissions hackable?

    Although I would never do this, I would like to know how a static html website with the permission mentioned in the title could be compromised. In my humble opinion, I would guess that this would pose no threat since a web visitor has no way to upload/edit/delete anything. What if the site was a simple PHP website that simply displayed ‘hello world’? What if this PHP site had a contact us form that was properly sanitized? Thank you

  • Trouble with Debian Lenny and Sphinx

    I've very basic understanding of linux systems, but I've a server which was setup a while ago to host some web apps. Recently I decided to test out and implement Sphinx but unfortunately I cant get the install to work. I'm running a Debian Lenny distro and when I try to install sphinx it says - checking MySQL include files... configure: error: missing include files. ****************************************************************************** ERROR: cannot find MySQL include files. Check that you do have MySQL include files installed. The package name is typically 'mysql-devel'.   • UAC prompt won't allow non-administrator to access IIS 7 Manager.

    The IIS 7 Manager seems to throw up a UAC prompt requiring administrative elevation as soon as the shortcut is clicked. This makes it impossible for a non-admin to use it. When I first created the user account, I could open IIS 7 Manager, but could not connect. I temporarily made the user account an Admin, then opened IIS 7 Manager again. Now that I've removed user from Admin, every time I open IIS 7 Manager it throws up the UAC prompt, making it impossible to do anything with it as a non-Admin. Is this a bug? Is there a way to reset the settings for this user so that IIS 7 Manager is back in some kind of first-run state?

The website is a classifieds website where all classifieds are stored in mysql and Solr. I need to backup this server with all information to be able to fully restore it if something goes wrong.   • How Can I Override the Remote Administrator security policy on Android 2.2 so that I can disable the lock screen?

    On Android 2.2 Froyo, I added my Corporate exchange email account to the phone, however, the security policy set by the "remote administer" requires that I enter a 4-digit PIN at the lock screen and a maximum 10sec idle. How can I hack my Android, through root access or otherwise, such that I do not need to follow this security policy. I am very annoyed at having to enter the PIN every time I want to use the phone, because I open/close it so often through out the day? Please help...I'm so surprised at how difficult it is to find the answer!

  • How can I ensure an ex-administrator of Exchange doesn't still have email access somewhere?

    I work for a company in which an ex-employee had administrative access to Microsoft Exchange 2007, and I understand that at some points this person had email which was sent to other employees also forwarded on to him. Upon taking over the administration of the server, of course all of his known accounts were closed, and any of those forwarding rules were removed. However, I would like to ensure that we didn't miss anything. What would be the best way to ensure that: (1) There isn't still some sort-of email being forwarded on to him somewhere? (2) That he doesn't have some sort-of other access to an inbox or another employee's email? I am less concerned about access to the box itself as I am that there is an existing email rule somewhere that is still getting run, or that there is a distribution list that we missed, etc.

On some of our machines instances of SQL Server 2008 have been installed which I need to be able to access, but since my account hasn't been explicitly granted a login, I can't get into. Is there a way to get into the database without changing anyone's password (e.g. I could solve this by changing the password of the user who installed the instance, assuming they've set themselves up as admin, and then logging on as them, but I don't want to have to do this).

    I'm having a problem with good ol' bdeadmin.exe in Vista. First, let's get the predictable responses out of the way: "You should not require your application to be elevated." This one does. C'est la vie. "You need to embed a manifest file." It is already compiled, it is many years old, the company that created it has no intention of doing it again, and it is installed from a Merge Module (MSM file). "BDE is obsolete, you should be using dbExpress" One and a half million lines of code. 'Nuff said. "Drop a manifest file next to the EXE." Tried that, did nothing. As a test, that same manifest file was able to make several other EXE files require elevation, just not the one I wanted. Something in there is preventing the external manifest from being read. "Create a shortcut and set SLDF_RUNAS_USER." Can't do that, it's a Control Panel applet. The only thing that worked was setting "Run this program as an administrator" under the Compatibility tab of its Properties window. I shouldn't have to tell users to do this. Bad for business. I need to have the installer do this. The MSM file uses a static path. Any ideas?
