  • Can't boot from CD

    I installed Ubuntu on a PowerBook G4 and it only works about 10% of the time. For this reason I decided to re-install OS X, but my machine won't boot from CD. It also won't boot Ubuntu the vast majority of the time, so I'm kind of screwed. After a ton of tries, I finally got my machine to boot a Linux command line. Is there anything I can do at this point to make my machine more runnable, just for the sake of installing OS X?

  • Configuration to point an X tty to a separate system?

    Specifically, I have an Ubuntu 10.04 system with a headless Ubuntu 12.04 virtual machine, and I'm looking for a way to have it set up so pressing ctrl+alt+F8 will take me into another X client which is connected to an X server on the vm (with gdm appropriately displayed at startup, etc.). As in, my startup script should spin up the headless machine and then immediately perform a "startx" pointed at the vm.

  • Xubuntu Running Slower than windows with constant freezing

    So I switched my computer to Ubuntu after some issues with Windows, then switched the GUI to Xubuntu after I noticed Ubuntu and Unity were painfully slow. I'm running an i5 with 8 gigs of ram and I still experience at least one full freeze (where I can't do anything and have to unplug) per week. REISUB does nothing and never has. I am constantly running Virtualbox because I still need Windows. Any thoughts to prevent this annoying freezing?

    On a old machine (512 MB RAM) I am currently running ubuntu jaunty and firefox 3.0.15. I tried the ad blocker addon add block plus but it eats lots of RAM (300 MB). Is high memory load of this add-on a bug, which is fixed in a newer version or just normal? If so, why is the memory usage so high? Is there another ad blocker add-on for firefox or another browser- add-on combination for linux (ubuntu jaunty) which uses significant less RAM?

  • Is it possible to "virtualize" an existing PC?

    I'm running Ubuntu Desktop 12.04, and I was wondering if it was possible to somehow take my whole filesystem (everything under /) and create an ISO from it. Then, perhaps, use that ISO as the file system of a VBox VM (obviously, it would have to be Ubuntu, and probably 12.04). Basically, I've spent a lot of time configuring my development machine, but need to be able to work on it from whatever computer I happen to be at. VMs seem like the perfect solution.   • Does Windows 7 deleted files generated during hibernation?

    Somebody was using my Windows 7 and she hibernated it instead of shutting down. Later, I booted up Ubuntu and moved about 2GB worth of files from the Ubuntu partition to the Windows partition. After booting up Windows (from hibernation), I couldn't find any of the files. Then I restarted the PC, and the files showed for a second or two and then disappeared. Did Windows delete all the files I put on it while it was hibernating?

Everything works nice however every time i boot into Windows7 the grub menu doesn't work any more. i can't boot into windows or ubuntu any more. How do I stop this? Its rather annoying to have to boot, chroot and fix this problem everytime.

Where do I make these partitions, do I first make one big raid array 1 in BIOS and then partition when Windows 7 is installed or do I already in BIOS make these 4 partitions?

    Hello, I installed Hudson deamon on one server (running on debian lenny testing) some time ago. All was working until I perform an upgrade. At this time Hudson isn't accessible at port 8080 (which is the default port used). I have looked for iptables problems, however port 8080 is open in INPUT and OUTPUT. Configuration file in /etc/default/hudson seems okay, I haven't touch it. And if I do a ps aux | grep hudson, hudson deamon is running.   • How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

    How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg.   • What's hogging my CPU?

    Ubuntu's System Monitor applet shows 100% CPU usage continuously. If I click it, the resources tab shows it at 100% continuously, too. If I go to processes, though, to find out which process is the culprit, there is nothing above 10%. If I run top there is nothing above 10%. I try killing lots of things, but it continues at 100%. How can I find out what's hogging the CPU? This is an unusual situation on a computer I use daily, that normally only hits 100% CPU when I'm doing something that requires it (like loading 32 Firefox tabs) after which it goes back to a normal idle level. It's not a new install or anything. It shouldn't be maxed out. I'm not sure when it started or if I changed something that caused it to happen. Normally I would use top or System Monitor and find the process that had gone out of control, but I can't find anything with those tools this time. It persists after reboots and everything. And the processor is obviously hot, so it's not an erroneous reading. Update: I tried killing any process I saw active again, and killing vino-server finally fixed the problem, even though it never went above 5%. I had enabled Remote Desktop a few days ago (and have obviously now disabled it). How did it manage to use 100% CPU while top only showed it as 5% or so? How do I identify the culprit in the future? Looks like I'm not the only one: Still a problem in both jaunty & karmic. Interestingly, both System Monitor & htop do not show the sum of individual processes being anywhere near 100% cpu.

  • lm-sensors - always returns 32 degrees (celsius) for temperature

    On my VIA EPIA motherboard (using VIA VT8231 ISA bridge), I get strange output for the lm-sensors temperature reading. It always returns 32 degrees (celsius). I have previously had correct output for temperature (my munin graphs show temperatures typically in the range of 50 to 60 degrees. I've tried uninstalling (and purging) the lm-sensors package, have re-run sensors-detect a number of times and rebooted but nothing seems to change the output. I am running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10).   • Running git-svn with cron results in garbage in .git

    I've setup a git-svn repo with cron to fetch from the svn repo daily. I have a script to do the fetching, and this is what is invoked by cron. Everything is fine with the repo, and the script works fine when executed manually. However, when it runs under cron, empty files get dropped into the .git directory. The files have names that look like they are some base64 output, e.g. juTrvjP6m8 and kcKf3hu3b4. Two of these files show up for every cron run. I thought these might be commit hashes, but they're not, git-show says it's an unknown revision. I set-up the repo as follows: git svn init http://svn.ip.addr/repo git svn fetch svn-remote My script looks like this: cd /gitsvn/dir git svn fetch svn-remote git svn push pub The last line pushes the repo to a separate (bare) public repo from which others can clone. I'm piping the output from the cron job to a file, which looks like this: fatal: unable to run 'git-svn' Counting objects: 21, done. Delta compression using up to 2 threads. Compressing objects: 100% (10/10), done. Writing objects: 100% (11/11), 59.08 KiB, done. Total 11 (delta 8), reused 0 (delta 0) To /gitpub/repo.git 360faf5..a153b0d trunk -> trunk The line "fatal: unable to run 'git-svn'" is alarming, but the fetch seems to go ahead anyway. Any suggestions? Where are these empty garbage files coming from, and how to stop them? Am I in for bigger problems in the future? BTW, I'm using git 1.6.3.3.
