  So, I'm looking at rebuilding my home server. My current setup is the following Windows 7 Ultimate 1TB Boot Drive (my smallest drive) Windows Dynamic Spanned volume, continaing 1x 1TB drive, 2x 2TB drives, totalling 5TB. I am upgrading to a hardware RAID controller, and I would like to run Hyper-V server core. However, I want to retain the ability to join my "file server" to a homegroup, so I must use Windows 7. I know VHDs can only be like 127GB or something, so I obviously need to directly connect disks to my Windows 7 machine. Here is my plan: Server Core 2008 R2 (Hyper-V) 1TB Boot Drive (storing VHDs for boot drives of VMs) - possibly in a RAID 1 with my other 1TB drive 5x 2TB drives (1x 2TB drive hot spare), totalling 10TB, directly attached to a Windows 7 VM, for use of homegroup for this array. In the past, I directly attached the windows dynamic volume to a Windows 7 VM, and performance was abysmal. The question is, with hardware RAID, will it really make that much of a difference? Server specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz Asus Maximus II Formula (PCI-E x16) 8GB DDR2 RAM PC2-6400 (Yes, I know its a bit out of date)

• USB internet not accessible

  I'm brand new to ubuntu and linux. We access internet from a usb stick issued by a local telephone company. When I plug the stick into the computer, I see the device listed under internet connections as a mobile broadband device but it is grayed out and inaccessible. I tried to create a new mobile broadband connection but my country (Gabon) is not listed and we have no payment plans per se (we pay from a pre-paid card system).. Any clues as to how I can get the system to recognize the internet connection? Thanks for any help...

• How to update the USB Ubuntu (ISO) with new software

  I have Peppermint (based on Ubuntu) running of USB. Its bascially an ISO image that loads using Grub4Dos. Problem is that I each time I load Ubuntu - and want to use i.e. teamviewer or Firefox...I have to install it on the running live system. Since its running from a ISO image...a reboot means the software is gone. I can edit/open the ISO image using WinImage (on XP) - would you know how I can add extra software into this ISO image so next time Ubuntu loads...the new software is on there? Is there some special repositary director where I should copy the software files into and recreate the ISO image? The directory structure of this iso image is along the lines of: .disk [BOOT] Casper dists install isolinux pool preseed Appreciate your help with this. The software I am really interested in installing is the plugin for LogMeIn (for which I may need Firefox...thus I need Firefox installation) and Teamviewer. Thanks Nakata

• Folder with files shows as empty

  Last night I create a new project in Visual Studio 2010, in the folder c:\development\hobby\devices. When I navigate to that folder in a new instance of Windows Explorer, I get the 'This folder is empty.' message in the files pane. If I then, from within Visual Studio, issue the "Open containing folder command", explorer opens to the folder c:\development\hobby\devices\LoopBack, where loopback is a project under the main folder. If I paste that path into another new instance of explorer, explorer correctly opens c:\development\hobby\devices. How is this possible? SOLVED: This is what comes of typing paths instead of selecting them. Some elementary detective work yielded the following interesting results: C:\>dir dev*. Volume in drive C is OS Volume Serial Number is E4B4-0563 Directory of C:\ 2010/11/28 09:20 PM <DIR> Development 2010/12/01 08:57 PM <DIR> Develpment 2010/11/02 06:31 PM <DIR> DevTools 0 File(s) 0 bytes 3 Dir(s) 63 965 368 320 bytes free Where my disappearing project was in the badly spelt one.

• Windows 8 Stuck on Start Screen File Search

  I have been searching someone else having the same issue but I couldn't find any. Here is my problem: I'm using Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. File search screen does not close itself after I make a file search within start screen. It stuck on that screen. I can't go back to desktop, therefore, task manager is inaccessible. Only way to get out of it is to sign out. It also looks like non-operational. It doesn't give me any result at all. It's just a blank screen with "Files" title. It used to work perfectly. Things I have done before coming here: Safe mode minimal boot to ensure no other 3rd party software interferes. sfc haven't found any inconsistencies. Search index has been rebuild. Normal boot with all 3rd party services and start-up items disabled. System restore to a date that I know this feature was functional. And by the way, I have installed all updates released so far. I strongly used file search via start menu back in Windows 7. This is an absolute game changer for me. I'm curious what causes this. I'll do a "system refresh" if I can't fix this. I'm working on it, I'll keep this thread updated should I find any fix. First update: I just discovered that file search screen gets stuck if it's invoked by typing query directly in start screen. It doesn't get stuck if it's invoked from win + x menu. I was able to "escape" from stuck screen with invoking it again by win + x menu. After rebuilding search index again, search suggestions started to appear again but still there is no file search functionality. Second update: "Results for" expression appears only for a second near to "Files" title when search is initialized. Third update: As a last resort, I finally tried to do a "System Refresh" which has also failed to refresh by giving an error after waiting almost 20 minutes at 99%. (Seriously?) After cold boot it began to undo changes. After changes were reverted, I boot the machine without doing anything further and bingo! Search began acting normal again. This is a totally weird solution. It obviously fixed certain system files during failed refresh, and kept those changes untouched because they were supposed to be that way at the first place. I'll keep this thread alive should anyone comes with a more logical explanation. Forth update: After a windows update, search functionality again stopped responding. It happened after a system update for the first time. Now I have a pretty good suspicion about system update, though I have no solid proof of its involvement with this problem.

• USB mouse freezes

  A simple Microsoft Optical mouse 1000 (USB) that runs perfectly on Windows, freezes up under Ubuntu 10.x and Fedora 1x after about 10 minutes of using the OS.Rebooting, the same problem comes up again in a few minutes. Interestingly, the problem does not occur when Ubuntu is installed in Oracle VirtualBox VM. Installing Ubuntu "as usual" (i.e. not in a VM), causes the problem to occur. Has any one here faced the same problem or have a solution for it? Maybe using a different mouse that is known to work with Ubuntu 10.x? If it helps my system is: Asus P5NSLI motherboard (nVidia nForce 570 chipset), 4 GB RAM Ubuntu 10.10 refers to "32 bit" version of Ubuntu It seems that Ubuntu has a lot of all types of freeze issues. Can someone recommend a version of Ubuntu that is fairly recent and stable ? I intend to use Ubuntu for Ruby on Rails development.

• Raspberry Pi how to format HDD

  Hi I am very new to Raspberry Pi environment, so looking for a bit of help to format a usb hard disk drive. I ran lsblk and got sda 8:0 0 37.3G 0 disk sda1 8:1 0 37.3G 0 part looking on web, if tried the following "sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 -L USB40gb" it did something but when I tried to mount the drive again, it still showed the files that were there before and I can not create new file/folder "Error creating directory: Permission denied" I am writing this from my windows 8.1 pc so can not cut and paste from the pi. trying to format its output is a bit hard. Oh, there is Nothing written after the word "part" above. There use to be /media/USB40gb so I have done something because this has disappeared. I am using PCManFM 0.9.10 It does not have a format option, which would make life a lot easier, but then its not windows. I think I am running the basic linux os for the pi. It boots to a graphic environment, but I do not know how to advise what it is. I think its OpenBox 2.0.4 Thanks in advance Speed PS: I reran the format string above but this time I changed the label to read USB37gb. I did this to confirm that I was in fact formatting the right drive. Low and behold, it actually formatted the drive, wiping everything from it. Great ... testing it by creating a new folder on the drive and get error msg Permission Denied! So I have fixed the formatting issue by trial and error but still can't use the drive... Suggestions anyone?

• Move "XP Mode" from Windows Virtual PC to VirtualBox?

  I installed "XP Mode" in Windows 7 (which uses Windows Virtual PC to host XP). I have now discovered that VirtualBox, which I have installed on the same Windows 7 machine, refuses to run at the same time as Windows Virtual PC (it gives me an error about not running multiple visualization programs). Is there any way I can convert the "XP Mode" image so that it will run inside VirtualBox instead of Windows Virtual PC? That way I will be able to run XP as well as other VM's at the same time.

• SNTP, why do you mock me?!

  --- SOLVED SEE EDIT 5 --- My w2k3 pdc is configured as an authoritative time server. Other servers on the domain are able to sync with it if I manually specify it in the peer list. By if I try to sync from flags 'domhier', it wont resync; I get the error message The computer did not resync because no time data was available. I can only think that it is not querying the pdc. I also tried setting the registry as shown here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193825). But no luck (I have not restarted the server, I am hoping I wont have to since it is the pdc) If you would like any further information on my config, please let me know. Edit 1: I have set the w32time service config AnnouceFlags to 0x05 as documented here www.krr.org/microsoft/authoritative_time_servers.php and a number of other places. The PDC syncs to an external time source (ntp). I can get the stripchart on the client from the pdc no problems. The loginserver for the host I am trying to configure is shown as the pdc. Edit 2: The packet capture has revealed something interesting. The client is contacting the correct server, and getting a valid response but I still get the same error message. I came across an interesting key that indicated there may be some other ntp software running on the server. Sure enough, I look through the installed software list and there the little F*&%ER is. The problem with that though is that you have to use both hands (the Window button is too far away from the directional buttons), which is kind of annoying because generally, one of my hands is on the mouse. • SQL SERVER – Sends backups to a Network Folder, FTP Server, Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3

  Let me tell you about one of the most useful SQL tools that every DBA should use – it is SQLBackupAndFTP. I have been using this tool since 2009 – and it is the first program I install on a SQL server. Download a free version, 1 minute configuration and your daily backups are safe in the cloud. In summary, SQLBackupAndFTP Creates SQL Server database and file backups on schedule Compresses and encrypts the backups Sends backups to a network folder, FTP Server, Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3 Sends email notifications of job’s success or failure SQLBackupAndFTP comes in Free and Paid versions (starting from $29) – see version comparison. Free version is fully functional for unlimited ad hoc backups or for scheduled backups of up to two databases – it will be sufficient for many small customers. What has impressed me from the beginning – is that I understood how it works and was able to configure the job from a single form (see Image 1 – Main form above) Connect to you SQL server and select databases to be backed up Click “Add backup destination” to configure where backups should go to (network, FTP Server, Dropbox, Google Drive or Amazon S3) Enter your email to receive email confirmations Set the time to start daily full backups (or go to Settings if you need Differential or  Transaction Log backups on a flexible schedule) Press “Run Now” button to test You can get to this form if you click “Settings” buttons in the “Schedule section”. Select what types of backups and how often you want to run them and you will see the scheduled backups in the “Estimated backup plan” list A detailed tutorial is available on the developer’s website. Along with SQLBackupAndFTP setup gives you the option to install “One-Click SQL Restore” (you can install it stand-alone too) – a basic tool for restoring just Full backups. However basic, you can drag-and-drop on it the zip file created by SQLBackupAndFTP, it unzips the BAK file if necessary, connects to the SQL server on the start, selects the right database, it is smart enough to restart the server to drop open connections if necessary – very handy for developers who need to restore databases often. You may ask why is this tool is better than maintenance tasks available in SQL Server? While maintenance tasks are easy to set up, SQLBackupAndFTP is still way easier and integrates solution for compression, encryption, FTP, cloud storage and email which make it superior to maintenance tasks in every aspect. On a flip side SQLBackupAndFTP is not the fanciest tool to manage backups or check their health. It only works reliably on local SQL Server instances. In other words it has to be installed on the SQL server itself. For remote servers it uses scripting which is less reliable. This limitations is actually inherent in SQL server itself as BACKUP DATABASE command  creates backup not on the client, but on the server itself. This tool is compatible with almost all the known SQL Server versions. It works with SQL Server 2008 (all versions) and many of the previous versions. It is especially useful for SQL Server Express 2005 and SQL Server Express 2008, as they lack built in tools for backup. I strongly recommend this tool to all the DBAs. • Grub2 attempting to boot hd1 when it should boot hd0

  I'm attempting to perform a "normal" install on a USB3 SSD (I don't know if it is noteworthy, but I don't have a swap partition). The installation proceeds normally (I'm installing from a USB2 device I created using LiLi Boot, with a copy of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit that I downloaded directly from the source. The system I'm running Ubuntu on has had a more traditional installation of ubuntu running on it without issue (also 12.10), so I know that everything works A-OK when booting from a 7200RPM internal disk. There are a number of oddities that I've noticed so far, including graphics corruption, but the first and most pressing issue is that Grub2 refuses to recognize the correct hd. From /boot/grub/grub.cfg: if [ x$feature_default_font_path = xy ] ; then font=unicode else insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='hd1,msdos1' if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd1,msdos1 --hint-efi=hd1,msdos1 --hint-baremetal=ahci1,msdos1 b58ee4f7-d41d-400a-b7b8-18bd1f0ae9d3 else search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root b58ee4f7-d41d-400a-b7b8-18bd1f0ae9d3 fi font="/usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2" fi This is from a 100% fresh install of linux (first boot), which was installed while no hard drives were connected to the system, other than the USB2 LiLi drive. The system refuses to boot unless I change the hd1,msdos1 - hd0,msdos1 in the grub menu at boot, when it is the only disk device connected to the PC. What options are left for me to troubleshoot this issue? I've been racking my brains and taxing the internet trying to dig up something on this problem, but now I'd like to see if the Ubuntu community can rise to the challenge and help me fix this boot problem. This is the second time I've attempted this particular setup. The first time, after days of wasted time, I managed to get it to boot every other boot - i.e. every even boot it would boot into Ubuntu like it was happy; every odd boot it would boot into the BusyBox or Grub prompt. At one point it complained that it couldn't find /dev/disk/by-uuid/[the disk], which I found most perplexing, since the disk was there and booted before and after the occurrence (with intervention).

• Data recovery on a Samsung SV1203N HDD

  Let me start by saying that I am a beginner in Ubuntu, but pretty knowledgeable with Windows. I am having a strange problem trying to recover data from a Samsung SV1203N HDD (120 GiB). I have tried numerous things in both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (on a flash drive, an external HDD and a Live CD). This drive has some very important data on it and I am praying some of you Ubuntu geeks can help me get it back. Here's my problem. The HDD is clicking while I am booting, but it stops when I get into Ubuntu or Windows. It refuses to be detected in the bios, so I cant perform any tests on it. I have tried numerous things in both Windows (repair CD, Jumpers, etc.) and Ubuntu (Boot-Fix, GParted, Testdisk, Photorec, forcing a mount, etc.). But it all seems to lead me back to the fact that the drive is not being recognized in the BIOS. I've even tried chilling the drive in the fridge, which worked well for another drive I work on, and I recovered all of the data in Ubuntu flawlessly. I am assuming that since the drive stops clicking when I get into the OS' that there is hope for recovery. I am going to try an IDE/SATA to USB cable, and replacing the Logic Board, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities before I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated Bye

• Windows 7 UAC manifest file for some VB6 application

  Hi, all, I have an old VB6 application which should run on Windows 7 (with UAV set to the default level, 3 of 4 IMHO). It has the functionality to update itself, and Windows 7 is now complaining that it would modify the computer (At least windows 7 is right here). I was able to run it in Vista with some kind of manifest file, but this does not seem to work anymore (which is the intended behaviour if I think of it). Currently the Shield Icon has gone from my .exe, but when try to start the software, i get the message "Der angeforderte Vorgang erfordert höhere Rechte", or translated to english "the requested operation requires elevation". What can I do to stop windows to bug me anymore, so I can install this application on our clients computers. Hey, I already told Windows to run it as Invoker, so why is it still complaining?

• WNetAddConnection2 in Windows 7 with Impersonation and no Error Code

  I'm doing some crazy impersonation stuff to get around UAC dialogs in Windows 7 so the user does not have to interact with the UI (I have the admin creds of course). I have a process running as the Administrator and elevated past UAC. The issue that I'm facing is that when I make a call to WNetAddConnection2, within this process, I am not getting a new mapped net drive. The function returns ERROR_SUCCESS but no net drive is visible. We have another method of adding network drives using 'subst' but this, again, returns successful does does not add a net drive. I have tried to use the default user (which is the Administrator because of process's security context) and I have tried using specific user credentials. I can map the drive just fine through Explorer. Of course the same functionality works fine in XP/2003. I haven't got around to testing on Vista because of issues with impersonation that are limiting my ability to spin up the process. Are there unique Windows 7 limits on this function? MSDN does not glean any that I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• C: Running Unix configure file in Windows

  I would like to port a few applications that I use on Linux to Windows. In particular I have been working on wdiff. A program that compares the differences word by word of two files. Currently I have been able to successfully compile the program on windows through Cygwin. However, I would like to run the program natively on Windows similar to the Project: UnixUtils. How would I go about porting unix utilities on a windows environment? My possible guess it to manually create the ./configure file so that I can create a proper makefile. Am I on the right track? Has anyone had experience porting GNU software to windows? Update: I've compiled it on Code::Blocks and I get two errors: wdiff.c|226|error: `SIGPIPE' undeclared (first use in this function) readpipe.c:71: undefined reference to `_pipe' readpipe.c:74: undefined reference to `_fork This is a linux signal that is not supported by windows... equvilancy? wdiff.c|1198|error: `PRODUCT' undeclared (first use in this function)| this is in the configure.in file... hardcode would probably be the fastest solution... Outcome: MSYS took care of the configure problems, however MinGW couldnt solve the posix issues. I attempt to utilize pthreads as recommended by mrjoltcola. However, after several hours I couldnt get it to compile nor link using the provided libraries. I think if this had worked it would have been the solution I was after. Special mention to Michael Madsen for MSYS.

I suspect that there is no specific api call you can make, but you may be able to figure it out by checking something on some DOM element, ie feature detection. • Touch friendly GUI in Windows Mobile

  I'm porting an audio processing application written in C++ from Windows to Windows Mobile (version 5+). Basically what I need to port is the GUI. The application is quite complicated and the GUI will need to be able to offer a lot of functionality. I would like to create a touch friendly user interface that also looks good. Which basically means that standard WinMo controls are out the window. I've looked at libraries such as Fluid and they look like something I would like to use. However, as I said I'm developing i C++. Even though it would be possible to only write the GUI part i some .NET language I rather not. My experience with .NET on Windows Mobile is that it doesn't work very well... Can anyone either suggest a C/C++ touch friendly GUI library for Windows Mobile or some kind of "best practices" document/how-to on how to use the standard Windows Mobile controls in order to make the touch friendly and also work and look well in later versions of Windows Mobile (in particular version 6.5)?

  I am writing to the event log from my Windows Forms application running on Windows 7 and am getting this message in the event log: The description for Event ID X from source Application cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Exception Details the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table My logging code is: public void Log(Exception exc) { EventLog.WriteEntry( "Application", exc.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error, 100); } My logging on Windows Forms is usually to a DB, but in this case decided to use the event log. I usually use the event log in ASP.NET applications, but those are on XP Pro locally and Windows Server 2003 on the web boxes. Is this a Windows 7 thing or a Windows Forms thing, and what should I do to fix this? Thanks.
