• Dell Dimension running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I am not a "handsome prince"!

  Dell Dimension 2350 with a Pentium IV processor and integrated video and network chips running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I, apparently, am not am not a "handsome prince"! The system puts video and network to sleep and it will not wakeup. I have heard of this problem on laptops, but this is a tower. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I tried to ping the network card from another system and ping fails. The logs indicate that the system continues to be active. Pressing keyboard short-cut keys makes the disk light blink but neither the video or network card comes alive. Failing all else, are there any Linux commands that I could schedule in cron to pulse video and network adapters hourly that will keep them awake? Or, should I wait on Fedora13? Before this machine, I built a Dimension 2400 with Pentium IV and it had the same problem. Fedora9 on the same hardware is fine.

• Looking for fast, minimal, preferrably free disc cloning software [closed]

  We have to test our application installation and functionality on many Windows operating system versions and languages (XP, Vista, Win7; English, Spanish, Portuguese, etc; 32-bit & b4-bit.) While we can do much of this in virtual machines, we have noticed that VM's sometimes hide problems, or raise false bugs. So, we need to do "bare metal" OS installation for much of our testing. I have been using Acronis True Image for the past year, and am not impressed. It often gives random errors which require a reboot, and is really slow. For example, when trying to restore an image, it goes through a "Locking partition" cycle about three times (once after you click OK on each step of the wizard), each of which can take 5 minutes to complete. This all happens BEFORE it actually starts the image copy, which is sometimes quick (3-5 minutes), sometimes long (hours). The size of all of our images are roughly the same, so that is not related. So, anyway, I'm looking to switch to something else: I only need very basic functionality--just creating images of entire discs, and then restoring those images onto the exact same hard drive at a later date. That's it. I'm not opposed to paying for a good piece of software, but if there is something free out there that does the job well, that would be a preference. My OS on which the imaging software would run is Windows Vista, but a bootable media (into a Linux flavor) would be fine also, as long as its quick to use and reliable. Recommendations? (Also, moderators, if this should be a CW, I'll be happy to mark it as such; unclear about the rules there.)

I'm in my 3rd year Electrical Engineering and I'm passionate about coding, algorithms, Linux OS, etc. And also by Googling I found out that Linux OS is one of the best OSes for Embedded devices(may be/may not be). I want to work for companies which work on mobile applications. I'm a newbie/naive to this domain & my skills include C/C++ & MySQL. I need help to get started in the domain of Embedded Systems; like how/where to start off, Hardware prerequisites, necessary programming skills, also what kind of Embedded Applications etc. I've heard of ARM, firmware, PIC Micorcontrollers; but I don't know anything & just need proper introduction about them. Thanx. P.S: I'm currently reading Bjarne Struotsup's lecture in C++ at Texas A&M University, and one chapter in it describes about Embedded Systems Programming.

• how can I parse and group/do stats on user agent strings?

  I have a database that has the various user-agent strings of visitors to our site. I'd like to do a 'survey' of them to see what browsers our users are using, so that I can know what features I can use in future development. Is there a tool to parse and run statistics on user-agent strings, or a bunch of strings like this? Ideally, I'd like to see a hierarchical grouping of the stats. • copy/paste on MacOS gets 'Stuck'

  SnowLeopard. I commonly use copy in a terminal window to grab stuff I have to paste. A few times in the last few days, the clipboard has gotten 'stuck' on some old text. I do the copy gesture (with keyboard or Edit menu) in the terminal window. I paste somewhere else, and get something other than what I just copied. If all else fails, I can always tell the terminal to write it's content to a file and use that. But I'm wondering if there's something I'm doing to get into this pickle and if there's any way out.

• Counting total sum of each value in one column w.r.t another in Perl

  I have tab delimited data with multiple columns. I have OS names in column 31 and data bytes in columns 6 and 7. What I want to do is count the total volume of each unique OS. • Disable CTRL+mouse wheel zooming in Chrome?

  I'm a normal-sighted person and I would like to view pages at 100% all the time. I use keyboard shortcuts that involve CTRL a lot, so about twenty times a day I accidentally hit CTRL at the same time that I'm scrolling, which results in the page being reflowed and repainted. This in is annoying because it can take up to 30 seconds to fix the issue, depending on how complex the site layout is. On sites with dynamic layout such as Google Docs the problem is more serious; accidentally hitting CTRL+mouse wheel corrupts the display and forces me to refresh the page entirely, sometimes causing me to loose information in the process. I would like to either decouple CTRL+mouse wheel from zoom, or disable zoom functionality altogether. This is possible on Firefox by using about:config; is there a similar way to edit detailed settings in Chrome? Would I have access to the detailed settings if I used Chromium instead of Chrome? I'll probably jump ship back to Firefox if I can't solve this problem. There is a superuser question that asks basically the same thing I'm asking, but for Firefox and Internet Explorer exclusively. Other people on the Chrome forum have had related issues, but none have the same problem. "I would really like it if I could deactivate the auto zoom in/out." had "something with laptops and Windows 7", not the feature built into Chrome. Other people have had PDF specific issues, which doesn't concern me. I've also tried searching for extensions that allow you to disable the scroll; I had hoped that "Zoom Lock" would have the ability to lock the zoom at 100% and prevent CTRL+scroll wheel from distorting the display, but it doesn't work for my use case. • Can't run Ubuntu from disc

  When I place the boot CD in my CD drive and boot from it, I get the Ubuntu menu. I have these options Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer Install Ubuntu Check disc for defects Test memory Boot from first hard disk I can use the cursor keys to select them, and I can push F1 for help etc. However, I can not select an option. I've highlighted the first and tried enter, space bar etc. I do have a KVM, so I plugged in a 2nd USB keyboard and tried it but no go either. I can push escape and then got to the prompt. Am I doing something wrong?

• Getting spurious undo (ctrl-z) sent randomly on a Dell Laptop

  For the past couple of weeks, my laptop has had a strange problem where it looks like ctrl-z is pressed, so I usually lose bits of text I just typed. If I press ctrl-shit-z (redo), the text comes back, proving it's really as if ctrl-z was pressed. It's difficult to see a pattern, I can be undo-free for hours, then get a few within minutes, sometimes 2-3 undoes at a time. Very frustrating! Running WinXP+SP3 on Dell Latitude D820, Clamwin antivirus. I've tried another keyboard, no difference. Any clue on what this could be, or how I could trace this problem? 2009-09-25: Tried a few things that were listed or linked to on this page: http://www.selfishman.net/2008/06/24/problem-with-dell-inspiron-1501-keypress-every-second/ but nothing helped. Though it seems to point at a Dell laptop issue. I upgraded the BIOS and other drivers, but still got the problem.

• I have nice headphones. Need a wireless USB microphone so I don't have to switch to a headset to make a call

  Right now, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD595 headphones. They are plugged into a DAC/headphone amp. I spend all day listening to music through them and they sound awesome. Then, for making calls, I have a wireless USB headset from Logitech. Problem is, I can't make calls when I'm wearing my Sennheisers but I wouldn't want to listen to music all day using the Logitech headset. So I spend my day switching in between. So the question is, how can I make calls while wearing the headphones of my choice? One thing I thought of is a wireless USB microphone that I can clip to the Sennheisers. So I'd wear the Sennheisers with this mic all day and ditch the Logitech headset. But it doesn't look like anyone makes a microphone like this. By the way, I would love if the solution didn't transmit the sound of my clacky keyboard or noisy wood flooring.

  I wonder if Windows 7 or Vista's Snipping Tool can capture a screen 10 seconds later, and capture the mouse pointer as well? The thing is that sometimes we need to capture the thing that "pops up" when the mouse is over it, so in that case, Snippling tool won't seem to work (because the mouse pointer is activating the Snipping tool instead of pointing at the thing to get the "pop up" item). In this case, the key PrtScn on the keyboard can capture the screen to the clipboard, except it won't capture the mouse pointer, which is sometimes wanted... Is there a way to do that, and possibly say, "capture the screen 10 seconds later, when I am all ready?" thanks.

• EXCEL workbook, intermitently, takes 30 seconds to load

  I am trying to figure out why a simple .XLS EXCEL workbook is taking, randomly, 30 seconds to open. Before answering: Please, bear mind the following: Problem symptoms Hanging is intermitent and it takes exactly 30 seconds; During hanging there is no cpu or disk activity; It only happens during workbook load. Every runs smooth after that; Windows Explorer.exe hangs on folder, but all other folders, system and applications are still responsive; There are no consecutive hangings. I have to wait for while to reproduce this behaviour; All workbooks where located on a local drive (C:\BPI); The workbook has no macros and no addins; Office 2003 is being used for several years; The computer is running Windows XP; Computer has several network mapped drives, all addressed to main file server; Recently, main fileserver was replaced by Windows 2011 SBS Standard Edition What I have done so far I have traced machine Explorer.exe, using Process Monitor, added Duration column, and filtered by Duration 1. That's is how I found that hanging was taking exactly 30 seconds. For further information, please refer to Oliver Salzburg tutorial. Using Process Monitor, I have also figured out than five operations were taking most of sample collecting duration. Looking at sample image below, column Operation below you will notice that one single operation was taking 29 seconds; I have tried different workbooks (all of them smaller than 30 KB); I have, temporarily, removed all shortcuts on User Document's folder that were pointing to network drives or shares; I have runned CCleaner to fix registry issues; I made sure that there were no external links on tested workbooks; I have reproduced this behaviour for hours; I have extensivelly researched for hours on the web; Process Monitor's collected and filtered data

• How to Shutdown PC by Pressing Power Button

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. • Why is a SUBST'd drive inaccessible via shortcut or Run menu, but works fine from My Computer?

  I have shortcuts to C:, D:, and E: in my quick launch bar. C and E work fine when I click on them, but D does nothing (that I can see) when I click on it. D and E are both SUBST'd drives pointing to folders that happen to be network shares. (I do this rather than mapping them so it doesn't have to go through the network layer--that way it works faster and I still get recycle bin functionality, etc.) If I go Start-Run and type D: or D:\, I get an error box saying This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. If I go to My Computer and double-click the D drive, it comes up fine. Also, if I type \\servername\sharename pointing to the same place, it comes up fine. This just started happening this morning, out of the blue. It has been working fine ever since I set it up. Why might this be?

• Easily tell if focused on VirtualBox window?

  Is there a way to make it very obvious that my VirtualBox window isn't in focus? The problem I'm having is switching between workspaces on Ubuntu or OS X and then trying to type in my Windows virtual machine, only to find that it's not in focus. The Windows window looks like it's in focus (based on the title bar), but I'm actually typing in Firefox on the host machine, for example. It's even worse because the Windows text insertion cursor is blinking to show focus. Ideally, I'd like the VM's display to get unsaturated (e.g. a "partial" grayscale) when not in focus, just to prevent this keyboard-focus problem. Other options would be fine too, as long as I don't have to second guess where my focus is. I'm not using the seamless mode -- the display is all within a window.

• Recommendations for a 3rd party Calendar picker class that's easy to use in iPhone/iPad apps

I'd like to add a Calendar picker control to my iPad app that is similar in appearence and functionality to the Calendar picker control in the upper right corner of the native Calendar app on the iPad. I've looked into a couple of the 3rd party frameworks that have Calendar controls like this (such as the Tapku Library), but because I'm new to iPhone OS development, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use them, mostly because the ones I've looked at have little or no documentation. For those that have used 3rd party Calendar picker controls, can you recommend one that is... Easy to use or provide decent enough documentation to figure out how to use it Legit for use in iPhone OS 3.2+ (including 4.0) Or if you could recommend one and provide some code snippets from your projects that show how to... • Reading from a database located in the Program Files folder using ODBC

  We have an application that stores its database files in a subfolder of the Program Files directory. These files are redirected to the VirtualStore in Vista and Windows 7. We represent data from the database using Microsoft DataReports (VB6). So far so good. But we now want to use Crystal Reports XI to represent data from the database. Our idea is to NOT pass this data to CR from our program, but to have CR retreive it from the database using a a system DSN through ODBC. In this way we hope to present our users with more flexibility in designing their own reports. What we do want to ensure though is that these system DSNs are configured correctly when the user installs our program or when the program calls the Crystal Report. Is there a smart way to do this using System variables for instance, instead of having to write a routine that checks for OS-version, whether UAC is enabled on the OS, whether the write restrictions on the Program Files folder have been lifted, etc and then adapts he System DSN to point to either the C:\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder, or the C:\Users\User\AppData\VirtualStore\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder? Suggestions for an entirely different approach are welcome too!

• WMII Terminal Width of 80 Columns for xterm (colrules)

  I'm trying to get WMII to split horizontally at 80 columns for xterm, but I'm only seeing a way to do this via percentage. It would be nice to be able to set it by something other than percentage for various resolutions, but if I have to deal with that I will. The problem is that even percentages don't work at my resolution (1366x768). 47+47 in /colrules yields 79 characters and 48+48 yields 81 characters. As far as I can tell, there is no decimal system allowed so I could do 47.5 for instance. I came from Ion3 and I'm used to using 80 column terminals, resizable by the keyboard, to get a reasonable cut off point for VIM when I'm coding. I would just settle with using the mouse, but WMII seems to be much more fluid than Ion3, so I would have to do it a LOT, which sounds annoying. Any ideas?

  I'm looking for a way to manage my academic workflow for reading e-books in .epub or .mobi formats on OSX. My requirements: - continuous scrolling mode - ability to highlight text (e.g. in yellow, using a single keyboard shortcut) - ideally, the ability to make annotations as well Amazon Kindle reader for OSX offers annotating, but not continuous scrolling mode. Calibre offers continuous scrolling mode, but does not allow highlighting or annotating. Is there a solution that will allow me to do this? I'm also open to workarounds, e.g. using Calibre to convert to HTML, then reading the book in a browser---but I would still need the ability to highlight using a single keystroke.

• Wacom tablet or Evoluvent Vertical Mouse

  Having tried a number of mice that didn't help with wrist pain, I am contemplating buying a Wacom tablet or Evoluvent Vertical Mouse. I have heard great things about both of them. What do you recommend for someone with wrist pain in both hands that seems to be getting worse by the day? PS: I work mostly in Windows and Visual Studio environment. I currently have the MS natural ergonomic keyboard. I have started taking regular breaks and am also planning to see a doctor.

• Grub2 menu after VMware guest customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.
